Learn and practise: laut, zufolge, gemäß, nach, wie….

1.What this page explains

At C1, it is not enough to reproduce information correctly. A precise text must show where information comes from, how directly it is being reported, and what responsibility the current author takes for it.

The central system on this page is:

laut + source
source + zufolge
gemäß + source
nach + source/evaluation noun
wie + subordinate clause

These forms are related but not fully interchangeable. They differ in position, case government, register, semantic focus, and degree of verbalisation.

C1 goal: do not merely name sources; keep attribution, distancing, evidence, and your own evaluation clearly distinct.

2.1. Source attribution as a text function

Source-attribution expressions identify the person, institution, or document from which information comes. They separate the content of a claim from the current author’s responsibility for it.

Core pattern:

Laut dem Bericht steigen die Kosten.
Dem Bericht zufolge steigen die Kosten.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

3.2. Separating source, proposition, and evaluation

At C1, keep three levels separate: source, reported proposition, and your own evaluation. Attribution alone does not mean agreement or disagreement.

Core pattern:

Quelle: das Institut
Aussage: Die Zahlen steigen.
Bewertung: Die Erklärung überzeugt nur teilweise.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

4.3. Source attribution and indirect speech

Prepositional source phrases are alternatives to indirect speech. They can mark reported information without automatically requiring Konjunktiv I.

Core pattern:

Laut der Sprecherin ist die Sitzung beendet.
Die Sprecherin erklärt, die Sitzung sei beendet.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

5.4. The indicative is often neutral

After laut, zufolge, gemäß, or a source phrase with nach, the indicative is very common. The source phrase itself already marks distance from the proposition.

Core pattern:

Laut der Studie sinkt der Verbrauch.
Den Angaben zufolge bleibt die Nachfrage stabil.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

6.5. Konjunktiv can add distance

Konjunktiv I or II can be added when the text explicitly wants to foreground reported speech or distance. It is not obligatory merely because laut or zufolge is present.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

7.6. laut: core meaning

laut neutrally points to a source: the author reproduces a proposition on the authority of that source without personally guaranteeing its validity.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

8.7. laut: position

laut typically precedes the source noun phrase. This makes it especially useful for compact, early source marking.

Core pattern:

Laut dem Bericht ...
Laut Angaben des Instituts ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

9.8. laut: case government

Both dative and genitive occur with laut. For learners, the dative is a robust default; the genitive is also possible, especially in formal written noun phrases.

Core pattern:

laut dem Bericht
laut eines Berichts

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

10.9. laut with a person as source

laut can mark not only documents but also people or institutions as sources. With people, it often sounds concise and journalistic.

Core pattern:

Laut Müller beginnt die Sitzung um zehn.
Laut der Pressesprecherin gibt es keine Änderung.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

11.10. laut and non-specific sources

With non-specific sources such as Medienberichten, ersten Angaben, or vorläufigen Daten, laut can make the provisional nature of information visible.

Core pattern:

Laut ersten Angaben gab es keine Verletzten.
Laut Medienberichten wird weiter verhandelt.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

12.11. zufolge: core meaning

Dem Bericht zufolge fehlen mehrere Belege.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

13.12. zufolge as a postposition

The normal position is after the source noun phrase: dem Bericht zufolge. This postposition is a key structural feature.

Core pattern:

dem Vertrag zufolge
den Unterlagen zufolge
ihr zufolge

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

14.13. zufolge typically takes the dative

In its normal postposed use, the source noun phrase is in the dative.

Core pattern:

dem Bericht zufolge
einer Mitteilung zufolge
den Zahlen zufolge

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

15.14. Preposed zufolge: rare

Preposed zufolge occurs, but it is much rarer and can show different case patterns. For productive C1 writing, the postposed dative construction is usually the safest choice.

Core pattern:

dem Bericht zufolge
den verfügbaren Daten zufolge

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

16.15. zufolge with pronouns

zufolge can follow pronouns, providing a compact way to refer back to an already introduced source.

Core pattern:

ihm zufolge
ihr zufolge
denen zufolge

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

17.16. Comparing laut and zufolge

Both neutrally mark sources. laut normally precedes the source; zufolge normally follows it. The difference is often more syntactic and stylistic than semantic.

Core pattern:

Laut dem Bericht ...
Dem Bericht zufolge ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

18.17. gemäß: core meaning

gemäß den Bestimmungen
den Bestimmungen gemäß

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

21.20. gemäß as source attribution

With reports or rule sets, gemäß can identify a source, but it often carries the additional sense of in accordance with its content or rule.

Core pattern:

Gemäß dem Bericht wurden die Vorgaben eingehalten.
Gemäß Artikel 5 ist eine Genehmigung erforderlich.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

22.21. Do not mechanically swap gemäß and laut

Core pattern:

laut dem Gesetz
gemäß dem Gesetz

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

nach Angaben des Ministeriums
nach Einschätzung der Experten

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

nach den Angaben des Instituts

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

25.24. nach Angaben

ihrer Einschätzung nach
unserer Auffassung nach

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

31.30. nach: ambiguity with temporal meaning

Because nach also has a temporal meaning, source phrases should be lexically explicit. Nach der Studie can suggest either after the study or according to the study, depending on context.

Core pattern:

nach Abschluss der Studie
laut der Studie
der Studie zufolge

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

37.36. wie bereits erwähnt

Core pattern:

Wie bereits erwähnt, ist die Datenlage begrenzt.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

Den Unterlagen zufolge fehlt eine Unterschrift.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

40.39. Source in the middle field

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

41.40. Source at the end of the clause

Postposed sources can feel like a supporting attribution added after the claim. This is especially natural with zufolge or postposed nach phrases.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

In complex sentences, it must be clear whether the source attribution applies to the whole sentence or only to part of it.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

43.42. Source attribution and negation

Negation can belong either to the reported proposition or to the author’s evaluation. These levels should not be conflated.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

44.43. Source attribution and modality

Modal verbs and modal expressions inside the proposition initially belong to the reported information. Attribution does not say whether the current author shares that modality.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

45.44. Source attribution and quantification

Numbers, proportions, and quantifiers should be attributed precisely when they were not established by the current author.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

46.45. Source attribution and temporal reference

The source phrase itself does not determine tense. Temporal reference is expressed in the main clause or the wie clause.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

47.46. Marking self-reports

nach eigenen Angaben or eigenen Angaben zufolge signals that the information comes from the person or organisation concerned. This is an important distancing cue.

Core pattern:

Nach eigenen Angaben beschäftigt das Unternehmen 800 Personen.
Eigenen Angaben zufolge wurde die Frist eingehalten.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

48.47. Non-specific sources

Phrases such as Medienberichten zufolge or nach übereinstimmenden Berichten are useful, but they should not suggest more precision than the source situation actually provides.

Core pattern:

Medienberichten zufolge wird weiter verhandelt.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

49.48. Combining multiple sources

When information agrees, sources can be grouped; when claims conflict, they should remain separate.

Nach Angaben mehrerer Institute ...
Laut Institut A ..., während Institut B ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

50.49. Conflicting sources

Laut Bericht A sank die Zahl; Bericht B zufolge blieb sie nahezu konstant.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

Core pattern:

Laut den Daten sinkt der Wert.
Anscheinend sinkt der Wert.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

55.54. sollen as additional reportive distance

Subjective sollen can indicate that a claim comes from another source. Combined with explicit attribution, this creates double marking and should be used deliberately.

Core pattern:

Laut Medienberichten soll die Einigung kurz bevorstehen.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

56.55. wollen with self-claims

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

57.56. Journalistic style

Nach Angaben der Polizei ...
Wie die Polizei mitteilt, ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

In academic texts, source, finding, and interpretation should be kept distinct. wie die Studie zeigt is more explicitly evidential than simple laut der Studie.

Core pattern:

Laut der Studie ...
Wie die Studie zeigt, ...
Nach Einschätzung der Autoren ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

gemäß, nach Maßgabe, laut, and fixed references to articles, sections, or guidelines are typical. Here it is especially important to distinguish source attribution from conformity with a rule.

Core pattern:

Gemäß Artikel 4 ist ...
Laut Artikel 4 gilt ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

60.59. Professional report style

In professional reports, attribution should be consistent: data source, assessment, and the author’s own conclusion must not blur into one another.

Core pattern:

Nach Angaben des Teams ...
Aus den Daten lässt sich dagegen schließen ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

61.60. Avoid redundancy: *laut ... zufolge

laut and zufolge perform the same source-attribution function and should not be stacked in a single source phrase.

Core pattern:

*laut dem Bericht zufolge
laut dem Bericht
dem Bericht zufolge

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

62.61. Avoid redundant reporting verbs

Likewise, structures such as wie X berichtet, berichtet ... create unnecessary double marking. Multiple marking is useful only when the elements have different functions.

Core pattern:

Wie die Zeitung berichtet, ...
Laut der Zeitung ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

63.62. Precise sources without false precision

When the source is known, identify it as precisely as the argument requires. Vague phrases such as laut Experten can be too imprecise without context.

Core pattern:

Laut dem Bericht des Instituts vom Mai ...
Nach Angaben der Projektleitung ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

64.63. Do not confuse source with proof

A source phrase answers Who says this?, not automatically Has it been proven?.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

65.64. Separating your own position explicitly

After source attribution, your own evaluation should be signalled linguistically, for example with allerdings, dagegen, aus meiner Sicht, or an analytical conclusion.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

66.65. Source chains across several sentences

When several consecutive sentences report the same source, identical attribution in every sentence is unnecessary, but the source reference must remain clear.

Core pattern:

Laut dem Bericht ... Der Bericht weist außerdem darauf hin, dass ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

67.66. Making source changes visible

A change of source should be marked explicitly so readers do not accidentally attribute a claim to the wrong person or institution.

Core pattern:

Das Ministerium erklärt ... Die Gewerkschaft dagegen teilt mit ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

68.67. Attribution in headlines and short texts

In very compact formats, laut + source is especially economical. Precisely there, however, compression must not blur source and claim.

Core pattern:

Laut Studie: Nutzung steigt weiter.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

69.68. wie-clause for more verbal reporting

Compared with a nominal source phrase, a wie clause can specify whether the source shows, claims, confirms, warns, or concedes something.

Core pattern:

Wie die Studie zeigt, ...
Wie der Sprecher einräumt, ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

70.69. Choosing reporting verbs deliberately

Reporting verbs contribute their own meaning. berichten, behaupten, bestätigen, einräumen, and warnen are not neutral synonyms.

Core pattern:

Wie die Behörde bestätigt, ...
Wie der Verband behauptet, ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

71.70. Choosing source nouns deliberately

Angaben, Ansicht, Einschätzung, Darstellung, Analyse, Bericht, and Gutachten encode different kinds of source or evidence.

Core pattern:

nach Angaben
nach Ansicht
nach Einschätzung
laut Gutachten

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

72.71. Person, institution, or document

The linguistic choice also depends on source type. People say or explain, studies show or suggest, and rules stipulate or apply gemäß a standard.

Core pattern:

Wie die Autorin erklärt, ...
Wie die Studie zeigt, ...
Gemäß der Richtlinie ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

73.72. Data as a source

With data, forms such as den Zahlen zufolge, laut den Daten, or wie die Auswertung zeigt are especially transparent.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

74.73. Rules and standards as a source

With rules, laws, and requirements, gemäß is especially typical when the proposition expresses conformity or applicability.

Core pattern:

Gemäß der Richtlinie ist eine Dokumentation erforderlich.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

75.74. Statement as a source

With statements, nach Angaben, laut, zufolge, or a wie clause can work. The choice depends on whether you want to mark only origin or also the speech act.

Core pattern:

Nach Angaben der Sprecherin ...
Wie die Sprecherin erklärt, ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

76.75. Distinguishing attribution and quotation

A source phrase is not yet a direct quotation. Direct quotes need separate marking and should not be replaced by laut when exact wording matters.

Core pattern:

Laut der Autorin ist die Lage „angespannt“.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

77.76. Source and paraphrase

When paraphrasing, the content must remain faithful even if syntax and wording are changed.

Core pattern:

Die Studie spricht von einem moderaten Anstieg. → Laut der Studie steigt der Wert moderat.

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

78.77. Hedging with uncertain sources

With uncertain or provisional sources, additional cautious language can be useful, such as nach vorläufigen Angaben, soweit bekannt, or den bisherigen Daten zufolge.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

79.78. Avoid overloading source phrases

Very long source noun phrases can make the sentence opening heavy. A wie clause or separate sentence can be easier to read.

Core pattern:

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

80.79. Condensation and decompression

Source prepositions condense; wie clauses and full reporting constructions decompress. C1 style means choosing between them according to information load.

Core pattern:

Laut dem Bericht ... ↔ Wie aus dem Bericht hervorgeht, ...

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

81.80. Overall mental model

When writing, every attribution can be checked with five questions: Who is the source? What type of information does it provide? Which form fits? How much distance do I mark? What is the scope?

Core pattern:

Quelle → Typ → Form → Distanz → Skopus

At C1, always check whether the form merely marks origin or also encodes evaluation, conformity, evidential strength, or a speech act.

87.C1 model texts with source management

M1. Bericht

88.Editing checklist for source attribution

Before finalising a C1 text:

  1. Is it clear who the source is?
  2. Is it clear whether the source provides data, opinion, assessment, report, or rule?
  3. Does laut, zufolge, gemäß, nach, or a wie clause fit the source semantically?
  4. Is the case correct?
  5. Is the position correct, especially with zufolge?
  6. Does gemäß genuinely express conformity or rule-based reference?
  7. Is nach clearly source-related rather than temporal?
  8. Has indicative or Konjunktiv been chosen deliberately?
  9. Is the scope of the attribution clear?
  10. Are self-reports marked as such?
  11. Are conflicting sources kept separate?
  12. Is the author’s own evaluation clearly separated from the source position?
  13. Is a source not being confused with evidential strength?
  14. Is the sentence still readable despite a dense source phrase?
  15. Would a wie clause be more precise than a heavy noun phrase?

89.Summary

laut + source
→ short, neutral attribution

source + zufolge
→ typical postposed source marking

gemäß + dative
→ often “in accordance with / under”, especially formal

nach + dative / NP + nach
→ productive with Angaben, Ansicht, Einschätzung, Darstellung

wie + subordinate clause
→ source + explicit reporting/evidential action

The key C1 distinction is:

Who says this?
≠
Is it proven?
≠
How does the author evaluate it?

Core rule: Good attribution does more than identify origin. It also organises responsibility, perspective, and evidence clearly within the sentence.
