Reformulation is one of the central C1 skills. At this level, producing a grammatically correct sentence is no longer enough. The same information must be reshaped for different situations: more spontaneous, neutral, diplomatic, dense, specialist or accessible. This skill combines register control, lexical precision, syntax, cohesion and pragmatic knowledge.
Core idea: do not reformulate to sound more complicated; reformulate to sound more appropriate while keeping the meaning as stable as possible.
1.1. What reformulation means at C1
At C1, reformulation is not mechanical synonym replacement. The aim is to preserve the same propositional core while redesigning the expression for the situation, audience, genre and communicative purpose. Vocabulary, syntax, information density, perspective and directness may change, but the factual content should not shift unnoticed.
- Das klappt so nicht. → So lässt sich das nicht umsetzen.
- Wir müssen das anders machen. → Ein anderes Vorgehen ist erforderlich.
- Ich finde die Idee gut. → Aus meiner Sicht ist der Ansatz überzeugend.
2.2. Context determines the form
The same idea can sound very different in a chat, a meeting, a presentation, a formal email or a specialist text. C1 competence means controlling these shifts consciously. A sentence is therefore not simply informal or formal; it is more or less appropriate for a particular context.
- Das Problem ist ziemlich groß. → Das Problem ist erheblich.
- Viele Leute finden das schwierig. → Viele Betroffene empfinden dies als schwierig.
3.3. Preserve the core meaning
Before reformulating, identify what must remain stable: a fact, evaluation, uncertainty, request, cause or temporal relation. If 'possibly' becomes 'probably', a request becomes a demand, or 'some' becomes 'many', the change is semantic, not merely stylistic.
- Vielleicht ist die Methode zu kompliziert. → Möglicherweise ist die Methode zu komplex.
- Das ist falsch. → Diese Einschätzung erscheint nicht zutreffend.
- Ich glaube nicht, dass das reicht. → Es ist fraglich, ob dies ausreicht.
4.4. Spoken – neutral – formal
A useful basic model is a register continuum. Spoken formulations are often shorter, more personal and more idiomatic. Neutral versions avoid strong stylistic marking. Formal versions more often use abstract nouns, precise verbs, impersonal structures and explicit logical relations.
- Ich brauche mehr Infos. → Ich benötige weitere Informationen.
- Das ist echt wichtig. → Dies ist von zentraler Bedeutung.
- Wir reden später darüber. → Wir werden zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt darauf zurückkommen.
5.5. Lexical reformulation
At lexical level, an everyday expression can be replaced by a neutral or more specialised collocation. Natural combinations matter: not every dictionary synonym fits the same construction. C1 learners therefore monitor collocation, connotation and register at the same time.
- Das hat nicht funktioniert. → Die Maßnahme hat nicht den gewünschten Effekt erzielt.
- Die Zahlen gehen hoch. → Die Werte steigen.
- Die Preise gehen stark hoch. → Die Preise steigen deutlich an.
- Die Lage wird besser. → Die Situation verbessert sich.
6.6. Make language more precise, not merely more elegant
Good reformulation often increases precision. Vague words such as 'thing', 'problem', 'do', 'good' or 'bad' can be replaced by context-specific expressions. Precision, however, does not automatically mean longer or more technical wording.
- Das ist ein Problem für viele Menschen. → Davon sind zahlreiche Menschen betroffen.
- Das Thema betrifft uns alle. → Das Thema ist für die gesamte Gesellschaft relevant.
- Es wurde viel darüber gesprochen. → Das Thema wurde intensiv diskutiert.
7.7. Verbal style ↔ nominal style
A central C1 technique is switching between verbal and nominal structures. Verbal sentences are often more dynamic and accessible; nominal groups can package information more compactly and formally. Both are tools, not levels of quality.
- Wir wollen Kosten sparen. → Ziel ist eine Senkung der Kosten.
- Wir machen das, damit weniger Fehler passieren. → Die Maßnahme dient der Verringerung von Fehlern.
- Wir prüfen alles, bevor wir entscheiden. → Vor der Entscheidung erfolgt eine umfassende Prüfung.
8.8. Reformulating causal relations
Causal relations can be expressed through subordinate clauses, main-clause connectors or prepositional groups. When changing form, the cause itself must remain the same. weil/da create clauses, denn/nämlich follow different word-order rules, while wegen/aufgrund condense information nominally.
- Weil die Nachfrage gestiegen ist, müssen wir reagieren. → Aufgrund der gestiegenen Nachfrage ist eine Reaktion erforderlich.
9.9. Reformulating concession
Concessive relations can also shift between clause and nominal style. obwohl introduces a subordinate clause, dennoch/trotzdem connect independent statements, and trotz takes a nominal group. The logic remains: one circumstance argues against an outcome but does not prevent it.
- Obwohl es teuer ist, bleibt die Lösung sinnvoll. → Trotz der hohen Kosten bleibt die Lösung sinnvoll.
10.10. Reformulating conditions
Conditions can be expressed with wenn, falls, sofern, vorausgesetzt, dass, or nominally with bei, im Falle, unter der Voraussetzung. The more formal the version, the more important it becomes to name the actual condition precisely.
- Wenn die Daten stimmen, können wir beginnen. → Sofern die Daten verlässlich sind, kann mit der Umsetzung begonnen werden.
11.11. Active ↔ passive
Choosing between active and passive changes information focus. Active voice foregrounds the agent more easily; passive voice foregrounds the process or result. A reformulation is equivalent only if omitting or adding the agent does not distort the message.
- Wir haben das Projekt beendet. → Das Projekt wurde abgeschlossen.
- Die Firma hat die Regeln geändert. → Die Regeln wurden vom Unternehmen geändert.
12.12. Impersonal formulations
Formal texts often use es, passive constructions, sich lassen, sein + zu, support-verb constructions or abstract subjects. This can make a statement sound more objective, but it can also obscure responsibility. C1 therefore includes recognising when impersonality is useful and when it is problematic.
- Man kann das leicht erklären. → Dies lässt sich leicht erklären.
- Man sieht, dass sich viel verändert hat. → Es zeigt sich, dass erhebliche Veränderungen stattgefunden haben.
- Wir können das nicht sicher sagen. → Eine verlässliche Aussage ist derzeit nicht möglich.
13.13. Adjusting directness
A direct instruction may be too harsh in one relationship and appropriately clear in another. Reformulation means controlling directness deliberately: imperative, bitte, modal verbs, Konjunktiv II and impersonal requests create different social effects.
- Du musst das Formular heute schicken. → Bitte senden Sie das Formular noch heute.
- Schick mir bitte die Datei. → Könnten Sie mir die Datei bitte zusenden?
14.14. Hedging claims
C1 texts distinguish clearly between fact, interpretation, assumption and cautious evaluation. ist can become scheint, dürfte, lässt vermuten, es ist denkbar or nach derzeitiger Einschätzung. These forms are not mere politeness; they mark epistemic certainty.
- Das ist wahrscheinlich so. → Dies dürfte zutreffen.
- Das ist vielleicht möglich. → Dies wäre unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen denkbar.
- Man kann daraus lernen. → Daraus lassen sich wichtige Erkenntnisse ableiten.
15.15. Reformulating evaluation and stance
A personal evaluation can be expressed more subjectively, more neutrally or more institutionally. The evaluator must remain identifiable. Ich finde can become Aus meiner Sicht, Meines Erachtens, Die vorliegenden Daten sprechen dafür or Es ist festzustellen, but these do not encode the same source perspective.
- Ich finde die Idee gut. → Aus meiner Sicht ist der Ansatz überzeugend.
- Das kann man auch anders sehen. → Diese Frage lässt sich auch aus einer anderen Perspektive betrachten.
- Ich stimme nur teilweise zu. → Dem kann ich nur teilweise zustimmen.
16.16. Neutralising emotional colouring
Spoken language often contains intensifiers such as echt, total, mega, krass or strongly evaluative adjectives. Neutral or specialist contexts often replace them with more precise degree expressions. Conversely, overly sterile specialist language can be made more accessible in a presentation.
- Das ist echt wichtig. → Dies ist von zentraler Bedeutung.
- Das Problem ist ziemlich groß. → Das Problem ist erheblich.
17.17. Adapting connectors to context
Logical connectors also carry register. aber is neutral and versatile; allerdings, jedoch, hingegen, demgegenüber, gleichwohl or nichtsdestotrotz carry different stylistic signals. Reformulation is not about choosing the rarest connector, but the right degree of explicitness and formality.
- Das klingt logisch, aber es gibt ein Problem. → Der Gedankengang ist nachvollziehbar; allerdings bleibt ein Problem bestehen.
18.18. Increasing information density
Specialist texts often compress several propositions into a complex noun phrase or participial structure. This saves space and can clarify relations, but it increases processing load. C1 competence means using density selectively rather than nominalising every verb.
- Nachdem wir die Daten geprüft hatten, änderten wir den Plan. → Nach Auswertung der Daten wurde der Plan angepasst.
- Wir müssen erst die Ursachen verstehen. → Zunächst bedarf es einer Klärung der Ursachen.
19.19. Simplifying complex formulations
Reformulation also works in the opposite direction. A dense specialist sentence can be unpacked into several shorter sentences for a presentation, consultation or public communication. The technical content and logical relations should remain intact while unnecessary syntactic load is reduced.
- Wir können das nicht sicher sagen. → Eine verlässliche Aussage ist derzeit nicht möglich.
- Wir sollten das später noch einmal prüfen. → Eine erneute Prüfung zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt erscheint sinnvoll.
20.20. Reformulating for chat and spontaneous interaction
In chat, brevity, closeness and speed often matter more than fully elaborated syntax. Ellipsis, pronouns and simple connectors are normal. At C1, competence does not mean sounding formal; it also means using informal language in a controlled and audience-appropriate way.
- Das klappt so nicht. → So lässt sich das nicht umsetzen.
- Schick mir bitte die Datei. → Könnten Sie mir die Datei bitte zusenden?
- Wir reden später darüber. → Wir werden zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt darauf zurückkommen.
21.21. Reformulating for meetings and discussions
Meetings often require a middle register: clear, cooperative and precise, but not bureaucratic. Reformulation helps soften harsh statements, summarise positions and clarify misunderstandings without abandoning one's own point.
- Das kann man auch anders sehen. → Diese Frage lässt sich auch aus einer anderen Perspektive betrachten.
- Ich stimme nur teilweise zu. → Dem kann ich nur teilweise zustimmen.
- Das klingt logisch, aber es gibt ein Problem. → Der Gedankengang ist nachvollziehbar; allerdings bleibt ein Problem bestehen.
22.22. Reformulating for presentations
Presentation language often sits between spoken and written German. Dense noun phrases are hard to process by ear, while overly casual language may sound imprecise. Good reformulation makes written content speakable through clear chunks, explicit transitions and recurring key terms.
- Man sieht, dass sich viel verändert hat. → Es zeigt sich, dass erhebliche Veränderungen stattgefunden haben.
- Es gibt Vor- und Nachteile. → Der Ansatz ist mit Vorteilen, aber auch mit Nachteilen verbunden.
23.23. Reformulating for formal emails
Formal emails usually require polite directness. Spoken-style wording may sound unprofessional, while overloaded administrative language may feel distant or difficult. Good C1 formulations state the purpose, reason and desired next step precisely.
- Du musst das Formular heute schicken. → Bitte senden Sie das Formular noch heute.
- Ich brauche mehr Infos. → Ich benötige weitere Informationen.
24.24. Reformulating for specialist and academic-style texts
Specialist and academic-style texts often objectify claims more strongly, mark sources explicitly and use terminology consistently. Personal formulations may be replaced by source-oriented or topic-oriented structures, but authorship and responsibility should not be artificially obscured.
- Er sagt, dass alles gut läuft. → Seinen Angaben zufolge verläuft alles planmäßig.
- Die Studie sagt, dass Bewegung hilft. → Der Studie zufolge wirkt sich Bewegung positiv aus.
- Wir haben keine Beweise dafür. → Dafür liegen keine belastbaren Belege vor.
- Das Ergebnis ist nicht eindeutig. → Die Befundlage ist nicht eindeutig.
25.25. Preserve source perspective
When reformulating reported information, attribution must remain clear. Die Studie zeigt ... must not silently become Es ist bewiesen .... laut, zufolge, nach Angaben, indirect speech and reporting verbs help preserve epistemic responsibility.
- Er sagt, dass alles gut läuft. → Seinen Angaben zufolge verläuft alles planmäßig.
- Die Studie sagt, dass Bewegung hilft. → Der Studie zufolge wirkt sich Bewegung positiv aus.
26.26. Reformulating numbers, trends and data
Data can be expressed verbally, nominally or comparatively. Die Zahl steigt, es ist ein Anstieg zu beobachten and die Zahl verzeichnet einen Anstieg differ stylistically. Direction, magnitude and reference period must remain unchanged.
- Die Zahlen gehen hoch. → Die Werte steigen.
- Die Preise gehen stark hoch. → Die Preise steigen deutlich an.
- Die Leute kaufen weniger. → Die Konsumnachfrage geht zurück.
27.27. Reformulating temporal relations
Temporal relations can be expressed through clauses or nominal phrases: bevor, nachdem, während, seitdem correspond to forms such as vor, nach, während, seit. When compressing, the sequence of events must remain intact, especially with anteriority.
- Wir prüfen alles, bevor wir entscheiden. → Vor der Entscheidung erfolgt eine umfassende Prüfung.
- Nachdem wir die Daten geprüft hatten, änderten wir den Plan. → Nach Auswertung der Daten wurde der Plan angepasst.
28.28. Reformulating aims and purposes
Purpose relations can be expressed with damit, um ... zu, zu, für, zwecks or nominal goal expressions. When reformulating, do not confuse purpose with result. damit expresses an aim; sodass expresses an outcome.
- Wir machen das, damit weniger Fehler passieren. → Die Maßnahme dient der Verringerung von Fehlern.
29.29. Reformulating comparison and contrast
Comparisons can be formulated with während, hingegen, dagegen, im Gegensatz zu, im Vergleich zu or parallel structures. The chosen form affects whether the contrast is perceived as a relation between clauses or as a comparison between entities.
- Es gibt Vor- und Nachteile. → Der Ansatz ist mit Vorteilen, aber auch mit Nachteilen verbunden.
30.30. Preserve cohesion while reformulating
A sentence can be elegant in isolation and still fit poorly into a text. Pronouns, lexical repetition, theme–rheme structure, connectors and key terms create cohesion. Reformulation therefore requires checking what dies, dabei, darauf, dieser Ansatz or repeated nouns refer to.
- Wir sollten das später noch einmal prüfen. → Eine erneute Prüfung zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt erscheint sinnvoll.
31.31. One idea in five contexts
A particularly useful C1 perspective is to move the same idea systematically through several contexts. This shows that register is not merely vocabulary; it is a bundle of lexical choice, syntax, directness, information density and stance.
-
Chat: Das klappt so nicht.
-
Neutral: So funktioniert das nicht zuverlässig.
-
Besprechung: Ich glaube, wir sollten den Ansatz ändern.
-
Formelle E-Mail: Aus meiner Sicht sollte der bisherige Ansatz überprüft werden.
-
Fachtext: Die bisherige Vorgehensweise erweist sich als nicht hinreichend tragfähig.
-
Präsentation: Der bisherige Ansatz hat also klare Grenzen.
32.32. Synonyms are not automatically interchangeable
Words with similar core meanings may differ in register, collocation, intensity or perspective. Problem, Schwierigkeit, Herausforderung, Hindernis and Defizit are not free alternatives. C1 reformulation requires semantic control, not mere variety.
- Das hat nicht funktioniert. → Die Maßnahme hat nicht den gewünschten Effekt erzielt.
- Das Ergebnis ist nicht eindeutig. → Die Befundlage ist nicht eindeutig.
33.33. Avoid over-formalisation
Advanced learners sometimes make texts unnecessarily difficult by replacing every simple expression. A clear sentence such as Die Preise steigen is often better than an artificially inflated nominal construction. Formal does not mean maximally abstract.
- Die Zahlen gehen hoch. → Die Werte steigen.
- Die Preise gehen stark hoch. → Die Preise steigen deutlich an.
34.34. Recognise under-formalisation
Conversely, chat formulas, fillers, sweeping evaluations or direct imperatives may be inappropriate in formal contexts. Typical signals include halt, irgendwie, echt, total, krass, vague verbs such as machen, and missing source or limitation markers.
- Das ist echt wichtig. → Dies ist von zentraler Bedeutung.
35.35. C1 checklist for reformulation
A reformulation can be checked with six questions: Is the factual content unchanged? Is the strength of the claim unchanged? Is source perspective preserved? Does the register fit the context? Is the new form grammatically and collocationally natural? Does it genuinely improve clarity, precision or text function?
- Die Firma will grüner werden. → Das Unternehmen strebt eine nachhaltigere Ausrichtung an.
- Die Idee ist neu, aber noch nicht getestet. → Der Ansatz ist innovativ, bislang jedoch nicht hinreichend erprobt.
36.36. Summary: controlled variation
At C1, reformulation is controlled variation. Skilled speakers and writers can package the same idea in different ways without silently changing its meaning. They choose register, syntax, perspective, density and directness according to what works communicatively in the given context.
- Die Idee ist neu, aber noch nicht getestet. → Der Ansatz ist innovativ, bislang jedoch nicht hinreichend erprobt.
