Causal: weil/da ↔ aufgrund/wegen/mangels

Learn and practise: Causal: weil/da ↔ aufgrund/wegen/mangels.

1.What this chapter is about

At C1, it is not enough to form a causal clause with weil or da. You should also be able to express the same cause nominally and in an appropriate register.

Core contrast:

weil / da + subordinate clause
↔
aufgrund / wegen / mangels + noun phrase

Example:

Weil die Nachfrage gesunken ist, wurde die Produktion reduziert.
Aufgrund des Nachfragerückgangs wurde die Produktion reduziert.

Both sentences express cause, but package the information differently.

2.Two ways to encode cause

A cause can be expressed either as a clause or as a noun phrase.

clausal:
weil die Kosten steigen

nominal:
aufgrund steigender Kosten

The causal clause contains a finite verb. The noun phrase does not, so it must carry the relevant information through nouns, attributes, or complements.

3.Why this matters especially at C1

This transformation skill is central to:

formal writing
specialist texts
reports
summaries
data interpretation
administrative prose
precise argumentation

Nominalisation can compress information and create a more impersonal style, but it is not an end in itself.

4.weil: neutral causal relation

weil is the most common neutral causal connector.

Structure:

weil + subject + ... + finite verb at the end

Example:

Die Sitzung wurde verschoben, weil mehrere Teilnehmer fehlten.

weil works in both spoken and written standard German.

5.da: cause as background information

Causal da often sounds more written and tends to present the reason as known, assumed, or less surprising.

Example:

Da die Frist bereits abgelaufen war, konnte der Antrag nicht mehr berücksichtigt werden.

da is especially common before the main clause.

6.weil and da are not purely stylistic synonyms

Both mark causality, but they can organise information differently.

weil
→ often gives a direct answer to “why?”

da
→ often supplies background or an already established reason

Compare:

Warum wurde die Sitzung abgesagt?
– Weil die Referentin krank ist.

Da die Referentin krank ist, fällt die Sitzung aus.

The distinction is not absolute, but it matters stylistically at C1.

7.aufgrund: dense and often formal causality

aufgrund links the cause to a noun phrase.

Typical pattern:

aufgrund + genitive

Examples:

aufgrund des Personalmangels
aufgrund hoher Kosten
aufgrund der veränderten Rechtslage

aufgrund is especially common in formal, specialist, and administrative writing.

8.wegen: more neutral and broadly used

wegen is very common and stylistically broader than aufgrund.

In formal standard German, the safest pattern is:

wegen + genitive

Examples:

wegen des Streiks
wegen hoher Nachfrage
wegen technischer Probleme

The dative also occurs in spoken and regional usage. In controlled formal C1 writing, the genitive is usually the safer choice.

9.mangels: cause through absence

mangels has a specialised meaning:

mangels X
≈ because X is missing / insufficient

Examples:

mangels Zeit
mangels ausreichender Belege
mangels finanzieller Mittel
mangels Nachfrage

mangels is distinctly formal and is especially suitable for factual, administrative, and specialist texts.

10.mangels cannot replace any cause

Not every cause can be expressed with mangels.

Appropriate:

weil Beweise fehlen
→ mangels Beweisen / mangels ausreichender Belege

Not appropriate:

weil die Nachfrage stark gestiegen ist
→ *mangels Nachfrage

That would reverse the meaning, because mangels Nachfrage means because demand is lacking.

11.The main syntactic difference

Compare:

weil die Kosten steigen

with:

aufgrund steigender Kosten

The first is a subordinate clause. The second is a prepositional phrase.

Consequences:

subordinate clause
→ can contain its own subject + finite verb

prepositional phrase
→ no finite verb
→ information must be organised nominally

12.Word order with weil/da

In a causal subordinate clause, the finite verb appears at the end.

weil die Nachfrage sinkt
da die Daten fehlen
weil die Lieferung verspätet angekommen ist
da der Antrag nicht genehmigt werden konnte

With the perfect, passive, and modal verbs, the right edge of the clause can become long.

13.Word order with a nominal cause

A causal prepositional phrase can occupy different positions in the sentence.

Prefield:

Aufgrund des Streiks wurde die Veranstaltung abgesagt.

Middle field:

Die Veranstaltung wurde aufgrund des Streiks abgesagt.

The prepositional phrase functions as one constituent.

14.Cause at the beginning of the sentence

Compare:

Weil die Daten fehlten, konnte die Analyse nicht abgeschlossen werden.
Aufgrund fehlender Daten konnte die Analyse nicht abgeschlossen werden.

After a fronted subordinate clause, the finite verb of the main clause comes immediately:

..., konnte ...

After a fronted prepositional phrase, normal verb-second order applies:

Aufgrund ... konnte ...

15.Comma: clause vs prepositional phrase

A causal subordinate clause is separated by a comma:

Die Produktion wurde reduziert, weil die Nachfrage gesunken ist.

A simple causal prepositional phrase normally does not require a comma:

Die Produktion wurde aufgrund des Nachfragerückgangs reduziert.

This is a visible difference between clausal and nominal encoding.

16.Genitive after aufgrund

In controlled formal German, the typical pattern is:

aufgrund + genitive

Examples:

aufgrund des Ausfalls
aufgrund der Verzögerung
aufgrund eines Fehlers
aufgrund steigender Preise

With articleless plurals or mass nouns, case may be visible mainly on the adjective:

aufgrund technischer Probleme
aufgrund hoher Nachfrage

17.Genitive after wegen

For formal texts:

wegen + genitive

Examples:

wegen des Wetters
wegen der Bauarbeiten
wegen eines Missverständnisses
wegen fehlender Unterlagen

The dative is widespread in real usage, but in formal C1 production the case choice should be deliberate.

18.Genitive after mangels

mangels governs the genitive.

Typical examples:

mangels ausreichender Beweise
mangels finanzieller Mittel
mangels geeigneter Bewerber
mangels Interesses

Many typical combinations occur without an article and therefore look especially compact.

19.Articles preserve meaning

When nominalising, articles should not be dropped mechanically.

Compare:

aufgrund eines Fehlers
→ some unspecified error

aufgrund des Fehlers
→ an already identified error

The article therefore controls reference and information status.

20.The adjective often carries verbal information

Compare:

weil die Kosten steigen
→ aufgrund steigender Kosten

weil die Nachfrage sinkt
→ wegen sinkender Nachfrage

weil Unterlagen fehlen
→ aufgrund fehlender Unterlagen

Participles and adjectives can therefore carry part of the original predication.

21.A noun can replace an entire process

A stronger nominalisation:

weil die Kosten gestiegen sind
→ aufgrund des Kostenanstiegs

weil die Nachfrage zurückgegangen ist
→ aufgrund des Nachfragerückgangs

weil das System ausgefallen ist
→ wegen des Systemausfalls

Here, the verbal event is converted into an event noun.

22.The suffix -ung as a common nominalisation pattern

Many verbs form event or process nouns with -ung.

verzögern → Verzögerung
ändern → Änderung
genehmigen → Genehmigung
reduzieren → Reduzierung
überlasten → Überlastung

Example:

weil sich die Lieferung verzögert hat
→ aufgrund der Verzögerung der Lieferung

23.Nominalisation is not always mechanical

Not every verb can simply be converted into a productive -ung noun.

German often uses lexicalised nouns:

steigen → Anstieg
sinken → Rückgang
ausfallen → Ausfall
fehlen → Mangel / Fehlen
sterben → Tod
beginnen → Beginn

C1 nominal style is therefore also a lexical skill.

24.Compounds make nominalisation denser

Compare:

der Rückgang der Nachfrage
→ der Nachfragerückgang

der Ausfall des Systems
→ der Systemausfall

der Mangel an Personal
→ der Personalmangel

Compounds are especially typical of specialist and administrative prose.

Too many long compounds, however, can reduce readability.

25.First basic nominalisation algorithm

For a simple causal clause:

1. Identify the cause.
2. Find the verbal core.
3. Choose a suitable noun or attribute.
4. Integrate subject/object as genitive, prepositional complement, or compound.
5. Choose the causal preposition:
   aufgrund / wegen / mangels
6. Check case and article.

Example:

weil die Kosten gestiegen sind
→ Anstieg + Kosten
→ Kostenanstieg
→ aufgrund des Kostenanstiegs

26.Maximum nominalisation is not required

Compare three levels:

weil die Kosten steigen
→ wegen steigender Kosten
→ aufgrund des Kostenanstiegs

The middle form is already nominally organised even though no new event noun has been created.

C1 means choosing the appropriate level of density.

27.aufgrund and wegen often compete

Both can express many neutral causes:

wegen des Sturms
aufgrund des Sturms

wegen technischer Probleme
aufgrund technischer Probleme

Tendency:

wegen
→ broader, more everyday, neutral

aufgrund
→ more factual, formal, often more written

The difference in meaning is often smaller than the difference in register.

28.mangels is semantically stronger than wegen

Compare:

wegen finanzieller Probleme
→ some financial difficulty is the cause

mangels finanzieller Mittel
→ the cause is specifically the lack of sufficient funds

mangels therefore already encodes a lack relation.

29.mangels as an alternative to weil ... fehlen

Especially typical:

weil Zeit fehlt
→ mangels Zeit

weil ausreichende Belege fehlen
→ mangels ausreichender Belege

weil geeignete Räume fehlen
→ mangels geeigneter Räume

weil Nachfrage fehlt
→ mangels Nachfrage

This transformation is semantically very direct.

30.da ↔ aufgrund: a typical written pair

Both forms work well in factual written language.

Da die Nachfrage deutlich zurückgegangen ist, ...
Aufgrund des deutlichen Nachfragerückgangs ...

Difference:

da
→ clausal, explicit predication

aufgrund
→ nominally compressed

31.weil ↔ wegen: a typical neutral pair

A particularly natural pattern:

weil es stark regnet
→ wegen des starken Regens

weil die Straße gesperrt ist
→ wegen der Straßensperrung

weil es technische Probleme gibt
→ wegen technischer Probleme

wegen is often the simplest nominal alternative to weil.

32.The causal noun must be natural

A grammatically possible derivation is not automatically idiomatic.

Natural:

steigen → Anstieg
zurückgehen → Rückgang
ausfallen → Ausfall
verzögern → Verzögerung

It is usually better not to invent a rare derived noun when German already has an established lexical solution.

33.Nominalisation changes focus

Compare:

Weil das Unternehmen Personal abbaut, steigen die Belastungen.

and:

Aufgrund des Personalabbaus steigen die Belastungen.

In the first sentence, the company is visible as the agent. In the second, the process Personalabbau is foregrounded.

Nominalisation can therefore background agents.

34.The agent can be preserved with the genitive

If the agent remains important, it can be retained inside the noun phrase.

weil das Unternehmen die Produktion reduziert
→ aufgrund der Reduzierung der Produktion durch das Unternehmen

However, another structure may sound more natural:

aufgrund der vom Unternehmen beschlossenen Produktionsreduzierung

The better choice depends on information density and readability.

35.Subject and object can become ambiguous

Nominalisations can blur semantic roles.

Example:

die Kritik des Ministers

can mean, depending on context:

the minister criticises
or
the minister is criticised

If the roles matter, make them explicit:

die Kritik des Ministers an der Entscheidung
die Kritik an dem Minister

36.Tense is expressed differently after nominalisation

A subordinate clause can mark tense grammatically:

weil die Nachfrage gesunken war

A noun phrase has no tense.

If needed, other devices must preserve the time relation:

aufgrund des vorherigen Nachfragerückgangs
aufgrund des bereits eingetretenen Rückgangs
aufgrund des damaligen Nachfragerückgangs

Temporal relations therefore may need lexical marking.

37.Modality can also be lost

Compare:

weil die Kosten steigen könnten

with an overly direct nominalisation:

aufgrund des Kostenanstiegs

The modal meaning has disappeared.

More precise:

aufgrund eines möglichen Kostenanstiegs
aufgrund der möglicherweise steigenden Kosten

At C1, nominalisation must preserve modality when it matters.

38.Negation must be transferred deliberately

Compare:

weil die Genehmigung nicht vorlag

Possible nominal forms:

wegen der fehlenden Genehmigung
mangels Genehmigung
aufgrund des Fehlens einer Genehmigung

The most natural solution depends on register.

mangels Genehmigung is especially compact and formal.

39.Not every nicht becomes Mangel

Example:

weil die Leitung nicht zustimmte

This is not automatically:

*mangels Zustimmung der Leitung

if the sentence actually means an active rejection.

Depending on meaning, possible forms are:

wegen der fehlenden Zustimmung der Leitung
wegen der Ablehnung durch die Leitung

The intended meaning must be clarified before nominalising.

40.Degree and intensity should be preserved

Compare:

weil die Nachfrage stark gesunken ist

Do not simply write:

aufgrund des Nachfragerückgangs

if stark matters.

Better:

aufgrund des starken Nachfragerückgangs
aufgrund des deutlichen Rückgangs der Nachfrage

41.Time information can be built into the attribute

Example:

weil die Preise im vergangenen Jahr stark gestiegen sind

Nominal:

aufgrund des starken Preisanstiegs im vergangenen Jahr

or:

aufgrund der im vergangenen Jahr stark gestiegenen Preise

The second form is less heavily nominalised but may be more transparent.

42.Relative timing also matters

Compare:

weil die Lieferung bereits verspätet eingetroffen war

Possible:

aufgrund der bereits eingetretenen Lieferverzögerung

If anteriority is crucial to the logic, it must not disappear during compression.

43.Cause with a pronoun: aufgrund dessen

aufgrund dessen can refer back to a previously mentioned situation.

Die Finanzierung wurde kurzfristig gekürzt.
Aufgrund dessen musste das Projekt angepasst werden.

The expression is formal and helps link sentences.

It does not directly replace a noun; it refers anaphorically to the preceding proposition.

44.wegen as anaphoric linkage is usually less formal

Standard German allows:

wegen dieser Entwicklung
wegen dieses Problems

Compare:

aufgrund dessen
aufgrund dieser Entwicklung
wegen dieser Entwicklung

The choice depends on register and how explicit you want the reference to be.

45.A cause can be expressed by a complex noun phrase

C1 texts often contain expanded causal noun phrases:

aufgrund der seit Monaten anhaltenden erheblichen Lieferprobleme

Internal structure:

aufgrund
+ article
+ several attributes
+ head noun

The longer the phrase becomes, the more important a clear head noun is.

46.Causal phrase with Partizip I

Partizip I works well for ongoing or dynamic properties.

weil die Kosten steigen
→ aufgrund steigender Kosten

weil die Nachfrage wächst
→ wegen wachsender Nachfrage

weil der Druck zunimmt
→ aufgrund zunehmenden Drucks

The form is compact and typical of factual writing.

47.Causal phrase with Partizip II

Partizip II can express a resulting or completed state.

weil die Frist verlängert wurde
→ aufgrund der verlängerten Frist

weil die Bedingungen geändert wurden
→ wegen der geänderten Bedingungen

However, not every passive event can be reduced to a Partizip II phrase without semantic loss.

48.State and event are not the same

Compare:

weil die Tür geschlossen wurde

and:

wegen der geschlossenen Tür

The first highlights the event of closing. The second tends to describe the resulting state.

If the event itself is the cause, an event noun may be better.

49.Cause through a change of state

Typical event nouns:

steigen → Anstieg
sinken → Rückgang
erhöhen → Erhöhung
reduzieren → Reduzierung
verschlechtern → Verschlechterung
verbessern → Verbesserung

Example:

weil sich die Lage verschlechtert hat
→ aufgrund der Verschlechterung der Lage

50.Cause through an organisational action

Example:

weil die Behörde die Vorgaben geändert hat

Possible nominalisation:

aufgrund der Änderung der Vorgaben durch die Behörde

Denser:

aufgrund der behördlichen Änderung der Vorgaben

The second version is more compact but can make agency less explicit.

51.Avoiding long genitive chains

Overloaded:

aufgrund der Änderung der Struktur der Finanzierung des Projekts

A better option may be:

aufgrund der geänderten Finanzierungsstruktur des Projekts

or verbally:

weil die Finanzierungsstruktur des Projekts geändert wurde

C1 density needs limits.

52.Criterion: readability

A nominal form is not automatically better.

Compare:

Aufgrund der Nichtverfügbarkeit der für die Durchführung erforderlichen Unterlagen ...

with:

Da die für die Durchführung erforderlichen Unterlagen nicht verfügbar waren, ...

The second form may be easier to understand despite using a full clause.

53.Criterion: genre

Typical tendencies:

conversation
→ more often weil

neutral report
→ weil / da / wegen / aufgrund

specialist text
→ da / aufgrund / wegen / mangels

administrative text
→ aufgrund / mangels especially common

These are tendencies, not prohibitions.

54.Criterion: new or background information

If the cause itself is the new key information, an explicit weil clause can be especially clear.

Die Sitzung wurde abgesagt, weil die Referentin erkrankt ist.

If the cause functions more as a frame:

Aufgrund der Erkrankung der Referentin wurde die Sitzung abgesagt.

The form therefore also changes information structure.

55.Criterion: is the agent needed?

If the agent matters:

weil das Ministerium die Regeln geändert hat

is often more transparent than:

aufgrund der Regeländerung

If the process matters more than the agent, the nominal form may be better.

Nominalisation is therefore also a tool of perspective management.

56.Criterion: how much information is already packed in

If a sentence already contains several dense noun phrases, an additional weil clause can improve readability.

Example:

Die Anpassung der langfristigen Finanzierungsstrategie wurde verschoben, weil mehrere rechtliche Fragen noch ungeklärt waren.

Fully nominalising both parts would make the sentence unnecessarily heavy.

57.The reverse operation: verbalisation

C1 also requires the reverse transformation:

aufgrund des Kostenanstiegs
→ weil die Kosten gestiegen sind

wegen der Verzögerung
→ weil sich etwas verzögert hat

mangels ausreichender Belege
→ weil ausreichende Belege fehlen

Verbalisation often makes agents, time, and action more explicit.

58.A verbalisation algorithm

For a nominal cause:

1. Find the head noun.
2. Reconstruct the underlying verb/adjective.
3. Identify semantic roles.
4. Restore tense and modality.
5. Choose weil or da.
6. Put the finite verb at the end.

Example:

aufgrund der kurzfristigen Absage des Veranstalters
→ weil der Veranstalter kurzfristig abgesagt hat

59.Verbalisation may require interpretation

Nominal forms can be semantically open.

wegen der Kritik des Ausschusses

Possible verbalisations:

weil der Ausschuss Kritik geäußert hat

or, in another context:

weil der Ausschuss kritisiert wurde

Context decides.

60.Reconstructing passive voice in verbalisation

Example:

aufgrund der Verschiebung des Termins

Possible:

weil der Termin verschoben wurde

Not necessarily:

weil jemand den Termin verschoben hat

If the agent is irrelevant in the source, passive voice is often the better reconstruction.

61.Verbalising an adjectival cause

Example:

wegen unklarer Zuständigkeiten

Possible:

weil die Zuständigkeiten unklar sind

Likewise:

aufgrund hoher Kosten
→ weil die Kosten hoch sind

Not every noun phrase requires an event verb.

62.mangels often verbalises with fehlen

Typical:

mangels Zeit
→ weil Zeit fehlt

mangels geeigneter Räume
→ weil geeignete Räume fehlen

mangels ausreichender Finanzierung
→ weil die Finanzierung nicht ausreicht

The last example shows that verbalisation does not have to be literal; it must be semantically appropriate.

63.Cause and result must not be reversed

Example:

Weil die Nachfrage sank, wurde die Produktion reduziert.

Correct:

Aufgrund des Nachfragerückgangs wurde die Produktion reduziert.

Not equivalent:

Aufgrund der Produktionsreduzierung sank die Nachfrage.

Nominalisation changes structure, not logical direction.

64.The relation must genuinely be causal

Not every temporal sequence is causal.

Nachdem die Sitzung endete, gingen alle nach Hause.

This does not automatically justify:

Aufgrund des Sitzungsendes gingen alle nach Hause.

A nominal causal form is correct only if a causal relation is genuinely intended.

65.Correlation is not causation

Extra caution is needed in scientific or data-based writing.

Too strong:

Aufgrund der höheren Smartphone-Nutzung sank die Konzentration.

if only an association was observed.

More cautious:

Der Rückgang der Konzentrationswerte trat parallel zur höheren Smartphone-Nutzung auf.

Nominalisation should not create a stronger causal claim than the evidence supports.

66.Causal wording and evidential strength

If the cause is only assumed, hedge the claim:

möglicherweise aufgrund ...
vermutlich wegen ...
unter anderem aufgrund ...
wohl wegen ...

Example:

Der Rückgang ist möglicherweise auf veränderte Konsumgewohnheiten zurückzuführen.

C1 style controls not only causality but also the degree of certainty.

67.Multiple causes

Several causes can be grouped in parallel:

aufgrund hoher Kosten und sinkender Nachfrage
wegen technischer und organisatorischer Probleme
mangels Zeit und personeller Ressourcen

Parallel structure matters.

The phrase becomes hard to process if the coordinated elements differ greatly in structure.

68.Different cause types should not be mixed mechanically

Example:

mangels Personal und aufgrund hoher Kosten

is semantically possible because the prepositions encode different relations.

An artificial unification:

*mangels Personal und hoher Kosten

would incorrectly imply that the costs are also lacking.

69.Contrast: weil die Mittel fehlen ↔ mangels finanzieller Mittel

Compare:

Weil die finanziellen Mittel fehlen, kann das Projekt nicht fortgesetzt werden.
Mangels finanzieller Mittel kann das Projekt nicht fortgesetzt werden.

The second form is:

shorter
more formal
more nominally dense

The first is more explicit and more natural in speech.

70.Contrast: da die Kosten steigen ↔ aufgrund steigender Kosten

Da die Kosten steigen, wird das Verfahren überprüft.
Aufgrund steigender Kosten wird das Verfahren überprüft.

The nominal form is more compact.

The da clause, however, clearly presents a full proposition:

die Kosten steigen

That can be more transparent in complex argumentation.

71.Contrast: weil there were problems ↔ wegen problems

Weil es technische Probleme gab, musste der Start verschoben werden.
Wegen technischer Probleme musste der Start verschoben werden.

The second version removes the impersonal es gab completely.

Structures of this type often nominalise especially elegantly.

72.Contrast: weil X is insufficient ↔ mangels sufficient X

Example:

Weil die Datenbasis nicht ausreicht, ist keine belastbare Aussage möglich.
Mangels ausreichender Datengrundlage ist keine belastbare Aussage möglich.

The nominalisation replaces:

nicht ausreichen
→ ausreichend + mangels

This shows that transformation often requires lexical reconstruction, not word-for-word conversion.

73.Common mistake 1: wrong case after aufgrund

For formal C1 writing:

aufgrund des Problems
aufgrund der Verzögerung
aufgrund technischer Schwierigkeiten

Not as the standard pattern:

*aufgrund dem Problem

Case is part of the construction and should be learned together with the preposition.

74.Common mistake 2: unnecessary dative with wegen in formal prose

In everyday speech, you often hear:

wegen dem Wetter

For formal written C1 production, the safer form is usually:

wegen des Wetters

The point is not to deny real variation, but to control register value deliberately.

75.Common mistake 3: using mangels like ordinary wegen

Semantically wrong:

*mangels starken Regens wurde das Spiel abgebrochen.

because mangels expresses lack or absence.

Correct:

wegen starken Regens wurde das Spiel abgebrochen.

Appropriate with mangels:

Mangels geeigneter Beleuchtung wurde das Spiel abgebrochen.

76.Common mistake 4: losing modality

Source clause:

weil sich die Situation verschlechtern könnte

Too strong:

aufgrund der Verschlechterung der Situation

Better:

aufgrund einer möglichen Verschlechterung der Situation

Nominalisation must not turn a possibility into a fact.

77.Common mistake 5: losing the agent

Source clause:

weil der Anbieter die Preise erhöht hat

Nominal:

aufgrund der Preiserhöhung

This is sufficiently equivalent only if who raised the prices is irrelevant.

Otherwise:

aufgrund der Preiserhöhung durch den Anbieter

78.Common mistake 6: excessive density

Overloaded:

Aufgrund der infolge der Umstrukturierung entstandenen Verschlechterung der internen Kommunikationsabläufe ...

Possibly better:

Weil sich die internen Kommunikationsabläufe infolge der Umstrukturierung verschlechtert haben, ...

C1 means controlled density, not maximum density.

79.Common mistake 7: artificial noun formation

Not every verb should be nominalised mechanically.

Instead of a rare or awkward derivative, it is often better to use:

participle + noun
compound
established event noun
or a subordinate clause again

C1 word formation requires idiomatic control.

80.Common mistake 8: cause becomes too distant from its result

In long sentences, it may become unclear what the causal phrase modifies.

Unhelpful:

Die Kommission legte nach mehreren Beratungen einen neuen Entwurf vor, der zahlreiche Änderungen enthielt, aufgrund erheblicher Kritik.

Clearer:

Aufgrund erheblicher Kritik legte die Kommission nach mehreren Beratungen einen neuen Entwurf vor.

Causal relations should remain structurally easy to attach.

81.Common mistake 9: confusing cause with source basis

In some contexts, aufgrund approaches the meaning “on the basis of”.

Compare:

Aufgrund neuer Daten wurde die Prognose geändert.

This may mean:

because new data became available

but can also be understood as:

on the basis of the new data

In specialist prose, it should be clear whether you mean cause or evidential basis.

82.Register: spoken → neutral → formal

A possible scale:

weil das Geld fehlt
→ wegen fehlenden Geldes / wegen fehlender Mittel
→ mangels finanzieller Mittel

or:

weil die Kosten steigen
→ wegen steigender Kosten
→ aufgrund des Kostenanstiegs

The forms are not fully interchangeable in every context, but they illustrate typical register shifts.

83.Information density as a separate parameter

Register and density are not the same thing.

Compare:

weil die Nachfrage sinkt
wegen sinkender Nachfrage
aufgrund des Nachfragerückgangs

The forms become increasingly nominally compressed.

Yet wegen sinkender Nachfrage can remain stylistically neutral.

Density and formality therefore need to be evaluated separately.

84.Why da should not always become aufgrund

A da clause may be deliberately chosen because it:

expresses a full proposition
marks tense and modality clearly
shows its own agent
is easier to read

Example:

Da die Ergebnisse noch nicht abschließend bewertet werden können, bleibt die Entscheidung offen.

A nominalisation is possible, but not necessarily better.

85.Why wegen is not always simpler

With highly complex causes, wegen can produce a heavy noun phrase.

wegen der von mehreren Abteilungen unterschiedlich bewerteten neuen Regelung

Sometimes clearer:

weil mehrere Abteilungen die neue Regelung unterschiedlich bewerten

The structurally shorter form is not automatically easier to understand.

86.Quick selection table

weil
→ neutral, explicit, spoken and written

da
→ more written, background cause, often initial

wegen
→ very broad, neutral nominal cause

aufgrund
→ factual, formal, specialist

mangels
→ formal, cause = lack / absence

These are tendencies, not absolute rules.

87.Quick structure table

weil/da
+ subordinate clause
+ finite verb at the end

wegen
+ genitive
+ noun phrase

aufgrund
+ genitive
+ noun phrase

mangels
+ genitive
+ noun phrase with lack meaning

In every nominal variant, article, attributes, and case inside the phrase must be correct.

88.Quick nominalisation scheme

weil/da + proposition
↓
identify verbal core
↓
choose noun / participle / adjective
↓
integrate agents and complements
↓
preserve tense / modality / negation
↓
choose wegen / aufgrund / mangels
↓
check case + register

89.Quick verbalisation scheme

causal noun phrase
↓
identify head noun
↓
reconstruct underlying predicate
↓
clarify agents / roles
↓
restore tense and modality
↓
choose weil or da
↓
apply verb-final order

90.What should be active at C1

You should reliably be able to:

distinguish weil and da functionally
choose wegen, aufgrund, and mangels by register
form the genitive confidently
express verbal events nominally
use participles as attributes
retain agents when needed
preserve modality and time
verbalise nominal causes again
recognise excessive information density
avoid claiming stronger causality than the evidence supports

91.The central C1 idea

The core skill is not:

replace weil with aufgrund

but:

express the same causal relation
in different grammatical forms
with controlled register,
controlled density,
and minimal loss of meaning

That is the C1 step from knowing grammar to controlling style.

92.Summary

Causal nominalisation connects grammar, word formation, case, information structure, and register.

Core system:

weil / da
→ causal clause

wegen
→ broad nominal cause

aufgrund
→ factual-formal nominal cause

mangels
→ formal cause through lack / absence

Typical transformations:

weil die Kosten steigen
→ wegen steigender Kosten
→ aufgrund des Kostenanstiegs

weil Personal fehlt
→ wegen fehlenden Personals
→ mangels Personals

da die Nachfrage gesunken ist
→ aufgrund des Nachfragerückgangs

Remember:

Good C1 nominalisation is not maximally short; it is semantically faithful, register-appropriate, and readable.
