Adjectives in -bar as Passive Alternatives

Learn and practise: Adjectives in -bar as Passive Alternatives.

Adjectives in -bar are especially important at B2 because they connect word formation, modality, the passive, and register. A single word such as lösbar can condense a longer statement such as “can be solved”. At the same time, the relationship is not purely mechanical: some forms are lexicalised, some verbs do not form natural -bar adjectives, and competing passive alternatives create different emphases.

This chapter therefore treats -bar as part of a system: How is the form built? What meaning does it carry? When does it work as a passive alternative — and when does it not?

1.System overview

FunctionCompact formAnalytical paraphrase
possibilitylösbarkann gelöst werden
practical feasibilityleicht bedienbarlässt sich leicht bedienen
perceptibilitysichtbarkann gesehen werden
negative possibilityunvermeidbarkann nicht vermieden werden
abstract propertyMessbarkeit“degree to which something is measurable”

2.1. Core idea: -bar as a compact possibility form

Many adjectives in -bar describe that something can be done to an object or situation. They compress a passive statement of possibility into a property. The focus is not on the agent but on whether an action is possible, feasible, or perceptible.

Examples:

  • Der Text ist gut lesbar.
  • Das Problem ist lösbar.
  • Der Fehler ist vermeidbar.
  • Die Ergebnisse sind vergleichbar.

3.2. -bar in the system of passive alternatives

At B2, -bar should not be learned in isolation. It stands alongside analytical patterns such as können + passive, sich lassen + infinitive, and sein + zu + infinitive. These forms can overlap, but they highlight different things: a property, possibility, practical feasibility, or sometimes necessity.

Examples:

  • Der Text kann gelesen werden.
  • Der Text lässt sich leicht lesen.
  • Der Text ist gut lesbar.
  • Der Text ist bis morgen zu lesen.

4.3. Basic formation: verb stem + -bar

The productive basic pattern is verb stem + -bar. It often creates an adjective meaning roughly “can be …ed”. The exact form follows the lexical stem; the participle prefix ge- is not added.

Examples:

  • lesen → lesbar
  • lösen → lösbar
  • machen → machbar
  • messen → messbar

5.4. Common transparent formations

With many verbs, the relationship is immediately visible. These transparent formations are especially easy to paraphrase and are useful for understanding the pattern.

Examples:

  • Die Datei ist kopierbar.
  • Die Frage ist beantwortbar.
  • Der Plan ist veränderbar.
  • Das Material ist recycelbar.

6.5. Verbs with inseparable prefixes

Verbs with inseparable prefixes also commonly form -bar adjectives. The full stem remains: erreichen → erreichbar, vermeiden → vermeidbar, erklären → erklärbar. What matters is the lexical stem, not participle formation.

Examples:

  • Das Ziel ist erreichbar.
  • Der Fehler ist vermeidbar.
  • Der Zusammenhang ist erklärbar.
  • Die Daten sind überprüfbar.

7.6. Complex and prefixed verbs

With more complex verbs, the internal word structure often remains visible. Forms such as nachvollziehbar, umsetzbar, anwendbar, and übertragbar are especially important at B2 because they are frequent in factual, argumentative, and professional language.

Examples:

  • Die Entscheidung ist nachvollziehbar.
  • Der Vorschlag ist praktisch umsetzbar.
  • Die Methode ist auf andere Fälle anwendbar.
  • Die Ergebnisse sind nicht direkt übertragbar.

8.7. Verbs ending in -ieren

Many verbs ending in -ieren form adjectives in -ierbar. This pattern is highly productive in technical, scientific, and administrative vocabulary.

Examples:

  • Die Maschine ist reparierbar.
  • Der Prozess ist automatisierbar.
  • Die Daten sind digitalisierbar.
  • Die Ergebnisse sind reproduzierbar.

9.8. Semantic groups of -bar adjectives

Not all -bar adjectives belong to the same semantic group. Common areas include feasibility (lösbar), perceptibility (sichtbar, hörbar), usability (anwendbar), controllability (steuerbar), and comparability (vergleichbar). These groups help learners infer unfamiliar words from context.

Examples:

  • Die Schrift ist sichtbar.
  • Das Signal ist hörbar.
  • Das Verfahren ist steuerbar.
  • Die beiden Studien sind vergleichbar.

10.9. Not every verb freely forms a -bar adjective

-bar is productive, but not mechanical. It works most readily when an object is affected by an action. With many intransitive verbs or unusual combinations, an invented -bar form sounds unidiomatic. Established lexical items can nevertheless break this general tendency.

Examples:

  • Das Problem ist lösbar.
  • Der Text ist übersetzbar.
  • Diese Formulierung ist nicht ohne Weiteres akzeptierbar.

11.10. Lexicalised -bar words

Some words in -bar are historically or formally recognisable as derivatives, but their modern meaning can no longer be explained simply as “can be …ed”. They need to be learned as independent lexical items.

Examples:

  • Das war ein wunderbarer Abend.
  • Die Daten sind offenbar unvollständig.
  • Das Material ist haltbar.
  • Die Lösung ist wirtschaftlich tragbar.

12.11. Predicative use: sein + -bar

A very common pattern is the predicative use after sein, bleiben, or werden. In this position the -bar adjective takes no adjective ending. The sentence describes a property or assessment of the subject.

Examples:

  • Der Text ist verständlich und gut lesbar.
  • Die Kosten bleiben überschaubar.
  • Durch die neuen Daten wird das Risiko besser kalkulierbar.

13.12. Attributive use: -bar adjectives are declined

When a -bar adjective stands before a noun, the normal rules of adjective declension apply. The derivational part -bar remains unchanged; only the grammatical adjective ending is added.

Examples:

  • ein lösbares Problem
  • die erreichbaren Ziele
  • mit einer nachvollziehbaren Begründung
  • wegen vermeidbarer Fehler

14.13. Case and endings inside noun phrases

The ending depends not on -bar itself but on determiner type, case, gender, and number. This topic therefore connects word formation directly with the full adjective-declension system.

Examples:

  • Wir brauchen eine praktikable und bezahlbare Lösung.
  • Mit den verfügbaren Daten lässt sich die Frage nicht beantworten.
  • Die Bewertung messbarer Kriterien ist einfacher.
  • Trotz klar erkennbarer Risiken wurde das Projekt fortgesetzt.

15.14. Degree modifiers: leicht, schwer, gut, kaum, bedingt

-bar adjectives are often modified by adverbs. This allows speakers to express how easily something can be done or under what limitations. Such combinations are especially useful in B2 factual and argumentative texts.

Examples:

  • Der Text ist leicht lesbar.
  • Die Veränderung ist kaum messbar.
  • Die Ergebnisse sind nur bedingt vergleichbar.
  • Das Risiko ist schwer kalkulierbar.

16.15. -bar vs können + passive

können + passive expresses possibility as a full verbal statement. -bar packages it more as a property of the object. The meanings can be very close, but the information focus differs.

Examples:

  • Die Datei kann bearbeitet werden.
  • Die Datei ist bearbeitbar.
  • Der Fehler kann vermieden werden.
  • Der Fehler ist vermeidbar.

17.16. The agent usually stays in the background with -bar

A -bar construction is particularly suitable when the agent is irrelevant or generic. If the sentence needs to say explicitly who can perform the action, a verbal passive clause is often more natural.

Examples:

  • Der Text ist ohne Spezialwissen verständlich.
  • Der Text kann von den neuen Mitarbeitenden verstanden werden.
  • Die Maschine kann nur von Fachpersonal repariert werden.

18.17. A property is not the same as an event

A -bar adjective normally does not say that the action is actually happening or has happened. reparierbar means “can be repaired”, not “is being repaired” and not “was repaired”. This is a central difference from the process passive.

Examples:

  • Das Gerät ist reparierbar.
  • Das Gerät wird repariert.
  • Das Gerät wurde gestern repariert.
  • Das Gerät ist bereits repariert.

19.18. -bar vs sich lassen + infinitive

sich lassen + infinitive is a highly productive passive alternative and often sounds more dynamic or action-oriented. -bar is more compact and more strongly classifies the object by a property.

Examples:

  • Das Problem lässt sich lösen.
  • Das Problem ist lösbar.
  • Die Datei lässt sich problemlos öffnen.
  • Die Datei ist problemlos bearbeitbar.

20.19. -bar vs sein + zu + infinitive

sein + zu + infinitive can express either possibility or necessity depending on context. -bar typically expresses possibility. The two patterns are therefore not interchangeable in every sentence.

Examples:

  • Der Text ist leicht zu verstehen.
  • Der Text ist leicht verständlich.
  • Der Antrag ist bis Freitag einzureichen.
  • Die Aufgabe ist lösbar.

21.20. Keep possibility and necessity apart

A typical B2 trap is using a -bar form where the intended meaning is obligation. machbar means “can be done”, not automatically “must be done”. Obligation requires different grammatical means.

Examples:

  • Die Änderung ist technisch machbar.
  • Die Änderung muss bis Montag umgesetzt werden.
  • Die Änderung ist bis Montag umzusetzen.

22.21. un- + -bar: negative possibility

The combination un- + … + -bar is highly productive. It often indicates that an action is impossible or that a limit has been reached. Many such words belong to active B2 vocabulary.

Examples:

  • Der Fehler war unvermeidbar.
  • Die Schrift ist unlesbar.
  • Das Ziel ist momentan unerreichbar.
  • Die Kosten sind für viele unbezahlbar.

23.22. un- vs nicht + -bar

unlesbar and nicht lesbar are not always stylistically identical. The un- prefix often creates a more stable property or stronger classification, whereas nicht + adjective can be more tied to a specific situation. Context matters.

Examples:

  • Die Handschrift ist unlesbar.
  • Die Datei ist auf diesem Gerät nicht lesbar.
  • Der Schaden ist unvermeidbar.
  • Der Schaden ist unter diesen Bedingungen nicht vermeidbar.

24.23. Degrees instead of only yes/no

At B2, it is important not to express possibility only as yes/no. With gut, leicht, schwer, kaum, teilweise, nur bedingt, problemlos, a statement can be graded much more precisely.

Examples:

  • Die Daten sind problemlos auswertbar.
  • Die Wirkung ist nur teilweise messbar.
  • Die beiden Modelle sind kaum vergleichbar.
  • Der Vorschlag ist unter diesen Bedingungen nur bedingt umsetzbar.

25.24. Scientific and technical style

-bar adjectives are especially common in scientific and technical texts because they compactly express feasibility, measurability, and verifiability. Typical words include messbar, überprüfbar, reproduzierbar, quantifizierbar, übertragbar.

Examples:

  • Der Effekt ist statistisch messbar.
  • Die Ergebnisse müssen überprüfbar sein.
  • Das Experiment ist reproduzierbar.
  • Der Nutzen ist nur schwer quantifizierbar.

26.25. Professional and administrative style

In project work, administration, and business, -bar adjectives also compress whole statements. Common items include umsetzbar, planbar, finanzierbar, verfügbar, kalkulierbar, vereinbar. Not every item is semantically a pure passive paraphrase; actual usage must be learned.

Examples:

  • Der Zeitplan ist realistisch planbar.
  • Das Projekt ist aus dem Budget finanzierbar.
  • Die Lösung ist mit den Vorgaben vereinbar.
  • Die Risiken sind nur teilweise kalkulierbar.

27.26. -bar in argumentation and evaluation

In B2 argumentation, -bar adjectives are useful because they mark evaluations concisely. Proposals can be described as vertretbar, machbar, nachvollziehbar, akzeptierbar, or nicht umsetzbar, and then justified.

Examples:

  • Der Vorschlag ist grundsätzlich vertretbar.
  • Diese Entscheidung ist für mich nachvollziehbar.
  • Die zusätzliche Belastung ist kaum akzeptierbar.
  • Die Idee ist sinnvoll, aber derzeit nicht umsetzbar.

28.27. Comparison and gradation

Many -bar adjectives can formally be compared, but natural German often prefers adverbial comparison with besser, leichter, schwerer, deutlicher. Such patterns are especially common for technical or practical properties.

Examples:

  • Die neue Schrift ist besser lesbar.
  • Die zweite Variante ist leichter umsetzbar.
  • Der Effekt ist mit dieser Methode deutlicher messbar.
  • Die Risiken sind jetzt schwerer kalkulierbar.

29.28. Nominalisation in -barkeit

Many -bar adjectives form feminine nouns in -barkeit. These nominalisations are typical of scientific, administrative, and analytical texts and turn a property into an abstract concept.

Examples:

  • Die Lesbarkeit des Textes ist sehr gut.
  • Die Vergleichbarkeit der Daten ist eingeschränkt.
  • Die Machbarkeit des Projekts wurde geprüft.
  • Die Nachvollziehbarkeit der Entscheidung ist wichtig.

30.29. Systematic paraphrases

The same basic idea can be packaged in different ways. In paraphrasing, grammar is not enough; focus and register should also be preserved. The following sets show typical correspondences, not sentences that are identical in every nuance.

Examples:

  • Das Problem ist lösbar.
  • Das Problem kann gelöst werden.
  • Das Problem lässt sich lösen.
  • Das Problem ist leicht zu lösen.

31.30. Common mistakes

Common mistakes come from overly mechanical word formation, confusion between possibility and an actual event, and incorrect adjective endings. It is also problematic to interpret every -bar word automatically as a literal passive paraphrase.

Examples:

  • Richtig: Das Problem ist lösbar.
  • Richtig: ein lösbares Problem
  • Richtig: Das Gerät wird repariert.
  • Richtig: Das Gerät ist reparierbar.

32.31. A B2 decision algorithm

A short production sequence helps: 1. Is the meaning possibility? 2. Should the agent remain unimportant? 3. Is there an established -bar adjective? 4. Do I need a property or an event? 5. Would another passive alternative fit the register better?

Examples:

  • Die Methode ist anwendbar.
  • Die Methode kann in diesem Fall angewendet werden.
  • Die Methode lässt sich leicht anwenden.

33.32. Productive B2 lexical fields

For active vocabulary, it is useful to learn -bar adjectives in semantic fields. Especially useful are words connected with analysis, planning, technology, evaluation, and communication. This turns the suffix into a productive building block rather than a list of isolated words.

Examples:

  • messbar – überprüfbar – vergleichbar
  • planbar – kalkulierbar – umsetzbar
  • reparierbar – steuerbar – programmierbar
  • verständlich – nachvollziehbar – begründbar

34.Summary

-bar is a productive word-formation pattern that often expresses a passive possibility as a property. The safest basic paraphrase is often kann + Partizip II + werden, but not every -bar word is fully transparent or freely formed.

Five points are central at B2:

  • -bar typically expresses possibility or suitability, not the actual event.
  • Predicatively it has no adjective ending: Die Aufgabe ist lösbar. Attributively it declines normally: eine lösbare Aufgabe.
  • -bar, können + passive, sich lassen + infinitive, and sein + zu + infinitive can overlap but are not always interchangeable.
  • Modifiers such as leicht, schwer, kaum, and nur bedingt allow precise grading.
  • Nouns in -barkeit such as Machbarkeit, Messbarkeit, and Nachvollziehbarkeit are important building blocks of formal B2 style.

The key question is therefore not only “Can I form -bar here?”, but “Do I want to express a property, a possibility, an event, or an obligation?”
