Futur I: Future, Prediction and Promise

Learn and practise: Futur I: Future, Prediction and Promise.

1.What this page explains

The Futur I is formed with werden + infinitive. At B1, it is important to understand that in German this form does not simply mean “future.”

It has several central functions:

1. explicitly mark future time
2. express a prediction or assumption
3. formulate a promise or firm commitment

At the same time, German very often expresses future time simply with the present tense.

So the key B1 question is not only “How do I form Futur I?”, but also:

When do I actually need Futur I?

Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.

Er wird wahrscheinlich später kommen.

Ich werde das nicht vergessen.

2.The basic form: werden + infinitive

In a main clause, the conjugated form of werden stands in position 2. The infinitive stands at the end.

subject + werden + ... + infinitive

Examples:

Ich werde morgen arbeiten.

Wir werden später darüber sprechen.

Sie wird nächstes Jahr nach Berlin ziehen.

So the sentence bracket is:

werden ........ infinitive

3.Forms of werden

To form Futur I, you need the present tense of werden.

PersonForm
ichwerde
duwirst
er / sie / eswird
wirwerden
ihrwerdet
sie / Siewerden

Examples:

Du wirst das verstehen.

Er wird morgen kommen.

Ihr werdet bald mehr erfahren.

Sie werden nächste Woche abreisen.

4.The present tense is often enough for the future

German very often uses the present tense for future time, especially when a time expression clearly shows that the event is in the future.

Morgen arbeite ich von zu Hause.

Nächste Woche fahren wir nach Hamburg.

Am Freitag beginnt der Kurs.

These sentences are completely normal and do not require Futur I.

5.Comparing present tense and Futur I

Compare:

Morgen rufe ich dich an.

Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.

Both can express future time.

The present-tense version often sounds neutral and everyday. Futur I can emphasize the future more strongly, sound more formal, or carry additional meanings such as intention, prediction, or commitment.

So the choice depends on context, not only on time.

6.Function 1: explicitly talking about the future

Futur I is useful when the future itself is explicitly in focus.

In zehn Jahren werden viele Berufe anders aussehen.

Die Stadt wird in den nächsten Jahren weiter wachsen.

Wir werden bald eine Entscheidung treffen.

Das Unternehmen wird nächstes Jahr neue Produkte vorstellen.

Here, Futur I creates a deliberate future perspective.

7.Future without an exact time expression

Futur I can be especially useful when there is no specific time expression.

Wir werden eine Lösung finden.

Das wird sich ändern.

Du wirst noch viele Möglichkeiten haben.

Without morgen, nächste Woche, or another time marker, werden makes the future meaning clearer.

8.Function 2: predictions

Futur I is very typical for predictions.

Die Preise werden wahrscheinlich weiter steigen.

Das Wetter wird morgen besser werden.

Die Nachfrage wird in den nächsten Monaten zunehmen.

Viele Menschen werden künftig flexibler arbeiten.

In predictions, the focus is not only on time but also on the uncertainty of the future.

9.Words of probability

Futur I often appears with words that specify how certain a prediction is.

wahrscheinlich
vermutlich
wohl
vielleicht
sicher
bestimmt

Examples:

Er wird wahrscheinlich später kommen.

Sie wird vermutlich schon zu Hause sein.

Das wird wohl noch eine Weile dauern.

Du wirst das bestimmt schaffen.

10.Assumption about the present

An important B1 function: Futur I can also express an assumption about the present.

Er wird jetzt im Büro sein.

means roughly:

I assume that he is in the office now.

More examples:

Sie wird gerade unterwegs sein.

Das wird der neue Kollege sein.

Die Kinder werden schon schlafen.

Here, Futur I does not really refer to future time.

11.wohl makes the assumption especially clear

wohl is very typical when Futur I expresses an assumption.

Er wird wohl noch arbeiten.

Sie wird wohl keine Zeit haben.

Das wird wohl stimmen.

Here wohl does not mean “well,” but roughly:

probably / presumably

12.Function 3: promises and commitments

With Futur I, a statement can sound like a clear promise or firm commitment.

Ich werde dir helfen.

Ich werde morgen pünktlich sein.

Wir werden uns darum kümmern.

Ich werde das Problem so schnell wie möglich lösen.

Here, the future form can express determination and commitment.

13.Futur I for reassuring promises

Futur I often appears in reassuring or supportive statements.

Keine Sorge, ich werde dich nicht allein lassen.

Wir werden eine Lösung finden.

Du wirst das schaffen.

Alles wird gut werden.

Depending on context, the form can sound like a prediction, encouragement, or promise.

14.Firm intention and determination

Futur I can emphasize a deliberate intention more strongly than the neutral present tense.

Ich werde nächstes Jahr mehr Sport machen.

Wir werden unsere Arbeitsweise ändern.

Ich werde mich besser vorbereiten.

The form often sounds like a consciously formulated plan or decision.

15.Futur I can also sound strict or threatening

The strong commitment expressed by werden can also sound strict depending on context.

Du wirst jetzt sofort dein Zimmer aufräumen.

Sie werden diese Entscheidung noch bereuen.

These sentences are grammatically normal but pragmatically strong.

In polite communication, it is therefore important to notice whether Futur I sounds like a neutral future statement or like an order.

16.Questions in Futur I

In yes/no questions, werden stands in position 1.

Wirst du morgen kommen?

Werden Sie an der Besprechung teilnehmen?

Wird das lange dauern?

In W-questions, the question word comes first and werden follows:

Wann wirst du zurückkommen?

Wie wird sich die Situation entwickeln?

17.Negation in Futur I

nicht and kein follow the normal rules of negation.

Ich werde morgen nicht kommen.

Wir werden das nicht vergessen.

Er wird keine Zeit haben.

Die Firma wird nächstes Jahr keine neuen Mitarbeiter einstellen.

The infinitive remains at the end.

18.sein in Futur I

The infinitive can of course also be sein.

Ich werde morgen zu Hause sein.

Das wird nicht einfach sein.

Er wird jetzt wahrscheinlich im Büro sein.

Futur I with sein is especially common in assumptions and predictions.

19.haben in Futur I

haben also stands as a normal infinitive at the end of the sentence.

Wir werden morgen mehr Zeit haben.

Sie wird sicher viele Fragen haben.

Du wirst bald genug Erfahrung haben.

The structure remains unchanged:

werden + ... + haben

20.Separable verbs remain together in the infinitive

In Futur I, a separable verb stands as an infinitive at the end and is not separated.

Ich werde dich später anrufen.

Wir werden morgen früh aufstehen.

Sie wird am Wochenende einkaufen.

Er wird nächste Woche zurückkommen.

In the infinitive, the prefix remains attached to the verb.

21.Reflexive verbs

Reflexive pronouns follow the normal rules in the middle field.

Ich werde mich morgen darum kümmern.

Sie wird sich bald besser fühlen.

Wir werden uns nächste Woche treffen.

Du wirst dich daran gewöhnen.

The infinitive itself remains at the end.

Futur I can also be formed with modal verbs. In that case, two infinitives stand at the end.

werden + ... + main verb + modal verb

Examples:

Ich werde morgen länger arbeiten müssen.

Wir werden das Problem lösen können.

Sie wird bald wieder reisen dürfen.

Du wirst dich entscheiden müssen.

This structure is correct but noticeably longer.

23.Futur I in subordinate clauses

In a subordinate clause, the conjugated form of werden stands at the end after the infinitive.

Ich glaube, dass er morgen kommen wird.

Sie sagt, dass sie später anrufen wird.

Wir hoffen, dass sich die Situation bald verbessern wird.

Pattern:

dass + ... + infinitive + werden

24.Futur I with weil, obwohl, and wenn

The same final position applies in other subordinate clauses.

Ich komme heute früher, weil ich morgen lange arbeiten werde.

Obwohl es schwierig werden wird, geben wir nicht auf.

Wenn alles gut läuft, werden wir nächste Woche fertig sein.

The infinitive and the form of werden form the verb group at the end.

25.Futur I and lexical werden = “become”

werden can also be a full verb meaning “become.”

Er wird Arzt.

There is no second infinitive here. This is not Futur I.

In Futur I, werden can even appear twice:

Er wird bald Vater werden.

The first wird is the auxiliary; the second werden is the infinitive meaning “become.”

26.Do not confuse Futur I and the passive

The passive also uses werden, but the second verb form is different.

Futur I:

Die Firma wird neue Mitarbeiter einstellen.

werden + infinitive

Present passive:

Neue Mitarbeiter werden eingestellt.

werden + past participle

So the difference is especially visible in the verb form at the end.

27.Futur I and future passive

The two systems can be combined.

Die Straße wird morgen gesperrt werden.

Here:

wird = future auxiliary
gesperrt werden = passive infinitive

The structure is correct but heavier.

In everyday language, people often say more simply:

Morgen wird die Straße gesperrt.

The present passive is fully sufficient here because of morgen.

28.Do not confuse Futur I and Konjunktiv II

Futur I uses forms of werden:

ich werde
du wirst
er wird

Konjunktiv II with würde looks similar but has a different function.

Ich werde morgen kommen.

= future / commitment.

Ich würde morgen kommen, wenn ich Zeit hätte.

= hypothetical situation.

So werden and würde cannot simply be exchanged.

29.Time expressions in Futur I

Futur I can be used with ordinary time expressions.

morgen
bald
später
nächste Woche
in zwei Jahren
in Zukunft
künftig

Examples:

Wir werden nächste Woche darüber sprechen.

Ich werde später zurückrufen.

In zwei Jahren wird das Gebäude fertig sein.

In Zukunft werden wir mehr digital arbeiten.

30.Predictions in argumentative texts

In B1 argumentation, Futur I is useful when describing possible developments.

Wenn mehr Menschen öffentliche Verkehrsmittel nutzen, wird der Verkehr in den Städten abnehmen.

Neue Technologien werden viele Arbeitsprozesse verändern.

Diese Maßnahme wird wahrscheinlich zusätzliche Kosten verursachen.

This makes it possible to formulate consequences, expectations, and predictions clearly.

31.Futur I in presentations

In presentations, Futur I helps mark what comes next.

Im nächsten Teil werde ich drei Beispiele vorstellen.

Danach werden wir uns die wichtigsten Ergebnisse ansehen.

Zum Schluss werde ich die zentralen Punkte zusammenfassen.

Here, Futur I describes the planned structure of the presentation.

32.Futur I in formal communication

In formal e-mails or notices, Futur I can sound clear and binding.

Wir werden Ihre Anfrage so schnell wie möglich bearbeiten.

Sie werden in den nächsten Tagen eine Bestätigung erhalten.

Ich werde Ihnen die Unterlagen bis Freitag zusenden.

Wir werden die Ergebnisse Anfang nächsten Monats veröffentlichen.

Here, future meaning often combines with commitment or official prediction.

33.Futur I in everyday speech

In everyday speech, Futur I is possible but often unnecessary.

Neutral:

Morgen gehe ich einkaufen.

More explicitly marked:

Ich werde morgen einkaufen gehen.

Neutral:

Heute Abend rufe ich dich an.

As a commitment:

Ich werde dich heute Abend anrufen.

Context determines whether Futur I adds useful meaning.

34.Not every werden means future

When reading, always check which function werden has.

werden + infinitive
→ Futur I

werden + past participle
→ passive

werden + noun / adjective
→ full verb “become”

Examples:

Er wird morgen anrufen.

Der Vertrag wird unterschrieben.

Das Wetter wird kalt.

So the form of werden alone is not enough for analysis.

35.Common mistakes

1. Forgetting the infinitive

Wrong:

*Ich werde morgen.

if kommen is intended.

Correct:

Ich werde morgen kommen.

2. Not putting the infinitive at the end

Wrong:

*Ich werde anrufen dich morgen.

Correct:

Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.

3. Using Futur I everywhere just because the meaning is future

Often the present tense is enough:

Morgen habe ich frei.

4. Confusing werden and würde

Ich werde kommen.

is not the same as:

Ich würde kommen, wenn ich Zeit hätte.

5. Confusing Futur I and passive

Look at the final verb form: infinitive or past participle?

36.Practical decision strategy

For a statement about the future, these questions help:

Is the future already clear from tomorrow / next week, etc.?
→ present tense is often enough

Do I want to emphasize future time deliberately?
→ Futur I is possible

Am I making a prediction or assumption?
→ Futur I is very typical

Am I making a promise or firm commitment?
→ Futur I is very typical

Am I making an assumption about the present?
→ werden + infinitive can fit

Then check:

is werden conjugated?
is the infinitive at the end?

37.Compact function map

FunctionTypical choice
neutral futureoften present tense
explicitly marked futureFutur I
predictionFutur I + wahrscheinlich / wohl
assumption about the presentFutur I
promiseFutur I
firm commitmentFutur I
planned presentation stepsFutur I possible
formal noticeFutur I common

Memory rule:

Futur I is not simply “the future tense.”
It often marks future + speaker attitude.

38.Mini-dialogue: planning

Here, the present tense works for the fixed plan, while Futur I expresses a clear commitment.

Kommst du morgen zur Besprechung?

Ja, ich bin um neun Uhr da.

Und bringst du die Unterlagen mit?

Ja, ich werde sie mitbringen.

39.Mini-dialogue: assumption

Here, Futur I does not describe the future, but an assumption about the present.

Wo ist Martin?

Er wird wohl noch im Büro sein.

Meinst du?

Ja, er arbeitet heute länger.

40.Mini-text: prediction

The text shows typical Futur I forms for future developments.

In den nächsten Jahren werden viele Städte mehr Radwege bauen.

Der öffentliche Verkehr wird wahrscheinlich ebenfalls ausgebaut werden.

Dadurch werden mehr Menschen auf das Auto verzichten können.

41.Mini-text: promise

Here, Futur I strongly carries the meaning of commitment and reliability.

Ich werde mich morgen um die Reklamation kümmern.

Ich werde Sie informieren, sobald ich eine Antwort habe.

Wir werden gemeinsam eine Lösung finden.

42.Summary

For Futur I at B1, these points are central:

  • Futur I is formed with werden + infinitive.
  • In a main clause, werden stands in position 2 and the infinitive at the end.
  • In a subordinate clause, the form of werden stands at the end after the infinitive.
  • German very often expresses future time with the present tense.
  • Futur I is especially useful when future time is explicitly highlighted.
  • It is very typical for predictions and assumptions.
  • It can also express assumptions about the present.
  • Words such as wahrscheinlich, vermutlich, wohl, and bestimmt specify the degree of certainty.
  • Futur I can express promises, firm commitments, and determination.
  • Depending on context, the same form can also sound strict or threatening.
  • sein, haben, reflexive verbs, and separable verbs stand as normal infinitives at the end.
  • With modal verbs, two infinitives stand at the end.
  • werden + infinitive is Futur I.
  • werden + past participle is typically passive.
  • werden + noun/adjective can be the full verb “become.”
  • werde/wirst/wird must not be confused with Konjunktiv II würde.
  • When a time expression already makes the future clear, the present tense is often more natural in everyday German than unnecessary Futur I.

The key formula is:

present tense
→ neutral, time-clear future

Futur I
→ explicitly marked future
→ prediction / assumption
→ promise / commitment

A typical B1 triangle:

Ich rufe dich morgen an.

Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.

Er wird wohl gerade arbeiten.

The first sentence is neutral future, the second emphasizes future or commitment more strongly, and the third is an assumption about the present.
