Two-Part Connectors in Argumentation

Learn and practise: Two-Part Connectors in Argumentation.

1.What this page explains

Two-part connectors link two logically related elements. At B2, they are especially important because they make argumentative structure visible: addition, alternative, contrast, concession, double negation, or proportional development.

The main patterns on this page are:

sowohl ... als auch → addition
nicht nur ... sondern auch → intensified addition
weder ... noch → double negation
entweder ... oder → alternative
zwar ... aber → concession + contrast
einerseits ... andererseits → two perspectives
zum einen ... zum anderen → two argument points
je ... desto / umso → proportional relation
teils ... teils → distribution / mixed pattern

Examples:

Die Maßnahme ist sowohl günstig als auch wirksam.

Einerseits spart sie Kosten, andererseits erhöht sie den organisatorischen Aufwand.

Je länger wir warten, desto schwieriger wird die Entscheidung.

At B2, it is not enough to know the pairs. You also need to understand which sentence elements are linked in parallel, where the finite verb stands, and what argumentative effect the structure creates.

The page is reference and self-study material. It contains no exercises or tests.

2.1. What are two-part connectors?

Two-part connectors consist of two related parts. They mark a logical relation between two words, phrases, constituents, or whole clauses.

Examples:

Die Lösung ist sowohl praktisch als auch günstig.

3.2. Why they matter at B2

They help organize arguments clearly and make logical relations explicit. This makes texts more structured and less like a simple sequence of statements.

Examples:

Einerseits ist die Lösung flexibel, andererseits ist sie teuer.

4.3. Parallelism is central

The two linked elements should be grammatically parallel whenever possible. If adjectives are linked, both sides should contain adjectives; if noun phrases are linked, both sides should contain noun phrases.

Examples:

sowohl praktisch als auch günstig

sowohl die Kosten als auch der Zeitaufwand

They can link individual words, constituents, or whole clauses. Word order depends on the size of the linked units.

Examples:

Sie ist sowohl freundlich als auch kompetent.

Sowohl die Kosten sind gestiegen als auch die Lieferzeiten haben sich verlängert.

6.5. Logical categories

Not all pairs do the same job. Some add information, some present alternatives, others mark contrast or proportional development.

Addition → sowohl ... als auch / nicht nur ... sondern auch
Negation → weder ... noch
Alternative → entweder ... oder
Kontrast → zwar ... aber / einerseits ... andererseits
Argumentgliederung → zum einen ... zum anderen
Proportion → je ... desto / umso
Verteilung → teils ... teils

7.6. Information structure and focus

The first and second parts of the connector often mark exactly the elements being compared, added, or contrasted. This creates a clear focus.

Examples:

Nicht nur der Preis, sondern auch die Qualität ist entscheidend.

8.7. Do not break the pairing unnecessarily

The more clearly both connector parts relate to the linked elements, the easier the sentence is to understand. Excessive distance can make the structure difficult to process.

Examples:

Sowohl die Kosten als auch der Zeitbedarf müssen berücksichtigt werden.

9.8. B2 means variation, not decoration

Two-part connectors should serve a real logical function. Too many conspicuous pairs in a short passage can make a text sound artificial.

Examples:

Einerseits ..., andererseits ...

10.9. sowohl ... als auch: core meaning

The construction adds two equally valid positive pieces of information: A is true and B is true as well.

Examples:

Die Methode ist sowohl schnell als auch zuverlässig.

11.10. Adjectives with sowohl ... als auch

With adjectives, the parallel structure is especially simple and stylistically clear.

Examples:

Die Regelung ist sowohl transparent als auch praktikabel.

12.11. Noun phrases with sowohl ... als auch

Two subjects or objects can also be linked.

Examples:

Sowohl die Kundinnen als auch die Mitarbeiter wurden informiert.

13.12. Verbs with sowohl ... als auch

Verbal actions can also be added in parallel. The grammatical form should remain as parallel as possible.

Examples:

Das System kann sowohl Daten speichern als auch Berichte erstellen.

14.13. Whole clauses with sowohl ... als auch

With whole clauses, each side must remain syntactically complete and understandable.

Examples:

Sowohl die Kosten sind gestiegen als auch die Lieferzeiten haben sich verlängert.

15.14. Agreement with two subjects

When two subjects are linked by sowohl ... als auch, the verb is normally plural.

Examples:

Sowohl der Preis als auch die Qualität sind wichtig.

16.15. Argumentative effect

sowohl ... als auch works well when two aspects are presented as equally supporting the same position.

Examples:

Die Reform verbessert sowohl die Effizienz als auch die Transparenz.

17.16. Typical error with sowohl ... als auch

The two parts should link the same grammatical function. Switching from an adjective to a full clause often sounds awkward.

Examples:

Besser: sowohl günstig als auch zuverlässig

18.17. nicht nur ... sondern auch: core meaning

The construction adds B to A, with B often sounding like an additional or stronger point.

Examples:

Die Lösung ist nicht nur günstig, sondern auch nachhaltig.

19.18. Argumentative escalation

The second part can intensify an argument: the first point is already relevant, and the second strengthens it further.

Examples:

Die Maßnahme spart nicht nur Geld, sondern reduziert auch den Energieverbrauch.

20.19. Position of auch

auch typically accompanies the focused second element. With verbs, it can appear in the middle field.

Examples:

Sie hat nicht nur informiert, sondern auch konkrete Lösungen vorgeschlagen.

21.20. Noun phrases with nicht nur ... sondern auch

The construction can link two subjects, objects, or other noun phrases.

Examples:

Nicht nur die Kosten, sondern auch der Zeitaufwand spielt eine Rolle.

22.21. Verb agreement with two subjects

With two linked subjects, agreement often reflects the overall structure, and plural is usually the safest choice, especially when both subjects are equal in status.

Examples:

Nicht nur die Kosten, sondern auch die Lieferzeiten sind gestiegen.

23.22. Stylistic effect

nicht nur ... sondern auch is stronger than simple und because it explicitly marks argumentative expansion.

Examples:

Das Problem betrifft nicht nur Unternehmen, sondern auch Privatpersonen.

24.23. Contrast with sowohl ... als auch

sowohl ... als auch presents A and B more equally; nicht nur ... sondern auch often creates escalation or surprise.

Examples:

sowohl teuer als auch langsam

nicht nur teuer, sondern auch langsam

25.24. Typical error: asymmetric structure

After nicht nur and sondern auch, the linked units should be structurally comparable.

Examples:

Besser: nicht nur schneller, sondern auch günstiger

26.25. weder ... noch: core meaning

weder ... noch negates two elements at the same time: A is not true and B is not true either.

Examples:

Die Lösung ist weder günstig noch einfach.

27.26. No extra negation needed

weder ... noch already contains negation. An additional nicht is normally incorrect.

Examples:

✅ Er hat weder angerufen noch geschrieben.

28.27. Noun phrases with weder ... noch

Two people, things, or aspects can be excluded together.

Examples:

Weder die Kosten noch die technischen Risiken wurden berücksichtigt.

29.28. Verbs with weder ... noch

Actions can also be negated in parallel.

Examples:

Sie hat weder widersprochen noch zugestimmt.

30.29. Argumentative effect of weder ... noch

The construction is useful for rejecting two possible justifications or properties at the same time.

Examples:

Der Vorschlag ist weder wirtschaftlich noch sozial überzeugend.

31.30. Agreement with two subjects

With two subjects linked by weder ... noch, both singular and plural agreement occur depending on proximity and interpretation; in a clearly symmetrical B2 sentence, plural is often easy to process.

Examples:

Weder der Preis noch die Qualität überzeugen vollständig.

32.31. Typical error with weder ... noch

Do not mix weder ... oder. The fixed pair is weder ... noch.

Examples:

✅ weder heute noch morgen

33.32. entweder ... oder: core meaning

The construction presents two alternatives. Depending on context, they may be understood as exclusive or simply as options.

Examples:

Wir fahren entweder heute oder morgen.

34.33. Alternative between noun phrases

People, things, or concepts can also be presented as alternatives.

Examples:

Entweder der Vertrag oder die Zusatzvereinbarung muss geändert werden.

35.34. Alternative between actions

With parallel verbs, the same grammatical form should be used.

Examples:

Wir können entweder warten oder sofort entscheiden.

36.35. Alternative between whole clauses

entweder can appear in the first clause, while oder introduces the second alternative clause.

Examples:

Entweder wir handeln jetzt, oder wir akzeptieren die Verzögerung.

37.36. Argumentative effect

entweder ... oder is strong because it demands a choice between clear options. In complex argumentation, check whether there are really only two alternatives.

Examples:

Entweder wir erhöhen das Budget, oder wir reduzieren den Umfang.

38.37. Avoiding false dilemmas

In argumentation, entweder ... oder can oversimplify if other realistic possibilities exist.

Examples:

Nicht immer gibt es nur zwei Optionen.

39.38. Typical error with entweder ... oder

The two alternatives should be logically comparable and belong to the same level.

Examples:

Besser: entweder Kosten senken oder Einnahmen erhöhen

40.39. zwar ... aber: core meaning

With zwar ... aber, A is conceded, but B usually receives greater argumentative weight.

Examples:

Die Lösung ist zwar teuer, aber sehr zuverlässig.

41.40. Concession and expectation correction

zwar signals that A is true. aber then shows that A does not determine the whole evaluation.

Examples:

Das Verfahren ist zwar kompliziert, aber es liefert sehr genaue Ergebnisse.

42.41. Adjectives with zwar ... aber

The construction is especially compact when two properties are contrasted.

Examples:

Das Modell ist zwar älter, aber weiterhin leistungsfähig.

43.42. Whole clauses with zwar ... aber

zwar often appears in the middle field of the first main clause; aber connects the second main clause.

Examples:

Die Kosten sind zwar gestiegen, aber die Nachfrage ist ebenfalls gewachsen.

44.43. Argumentative weight often lies with aber

The second part often carries the speaker's actual argumentative conclusion.

Examples:

Die Maßnahme ist zwar unpopulär, aber langfristig sinnvoll.

45.44. zwar ... aber vs obwohl

obwohl creates a concessive subordinate clause; zwar ... aber distributes concession and contrast across two corresponding parts.

Examples:

Obwohl die Lösung teuer ist, ist sie sinnvoll.

Die Lösung ist zwar teuer, aber sinnvoll.

46.45. Polite and balanced argumentation

The construction is useful when acknowledging a counterpoint without giving up your own position.

Examples:

Der Vorschlag ist zwar verständlich, aber aus meiner Sicht nicht ausreichend.

47.46. Typical error with zwar ... aber

zwar does not always require aber immediately, but in clear B2 argumentation the contrasting second component should be easy to identify.

Examples:

zwar teuer, aber zuverlässig

48.47. einerseits ... andererseits: core meaning

The construction presents two perspectives or sides of an issue without automatically deciding which one is more important.

Examples:

Einerseits spart die Maßnahme Geld, andererseits erhöht sie den Arbeitsaufwand.

49.48. Ideal for pros and cons

It is especially suitable for balanced argumentation where both sides should be made explicit.

Examples:

Einerseits bietet Homeoffice mehr Flexibilität, andererseits kann der direkte Austausch leiden.

50.49. Word order after einerseits

einerseits can occupy first position, in which case the finite verb follows immediately. It can also occur in the middle field.

Examples:

Einerseits ist die Lösung günstig.

Die Lösung ist einerseits günstig.

51.50. Word order after andererseits

andererseits is a connective adverb. When it occupies first position, the finite verb follows directly.

Examples:

Andererseits verursacht sie zusätzliche Arbeit.

52.51. Argumentative neutrality

Unlike zwar ... aber, the weighting is often more open. Both sides can initially be presented as equal.

Examples:

Einerseits spricht vieles dafür, andererseits gibt es erhebliche Risiken.

53.52. Stating your position afterward

In good argumentation, einerseits ... andererseits is often followed by an evaluation or conclusion.

Examples:

Einerseits ..., andererseits ... Insgesamt überwiegen jedoch die Vorteile.

54.53. Relation to auf der einen Seite

auf der einen Seite ... auf der anderen Seite is semantically similar, but longer and more spatially phrased.

Examples:

Auf der einen Seite ..., auf der anderen Seite ...

55.54. Typical error with einerseits ... andererseits

The two sides should represent genuinely different perspectives, not merely list two unrelated facts.

Examples:

Einerseits Vorteil, andererseits Nachteil

56.55. zum einen ... zum anderen: core meaning

The construction organizes two argument points. Unlike einerseits ... andererseits, they do not have to oppose each other.

Examples:

Zum einen spart die Lösung Zeit, zum anderen reduziert sie Fehler.

57.56. Addition rather than contrast

Both parts can support the same conclusion.

Examples:

Zum einen ist das Verfahren günstiger, zum anderen ist es schneller.

58.57. Word order

zum einen and zum anderen can occupy first position. The finite verb then follows directly.

Examples:

Zum einen sinken die Kosten, zum anderen steigt die Qualität.

59.58. Argumentative organization

The construction is especially useful in presentations, essays and more formal position statements.

Examples:

Dafür sprechen zwei Gründe: zum einen ..., zum anderen ...

60.59. Contrast with einerseits ... andererseits

zum einen ... zum anderen often structures two points in the same direction; einerseits ... andererseits more strongly signals two sides or tension.

Examples:

zum einen günstig, zum anderen effizient

einerseits günstig, andererseits riskant

61.60. Typical error

zum anderen should follow a clear first point introduced by zum einen or an equivalent first-structure signal.

Examples:

Zum einen ..., zum anderen ...

62.61. je ... desto / umso: core meaning

The construction describes a proportional relation: as A changes, B changes correspondingly.

Examples:

Je länger wir warten, desto schwieriger wird die Entscheidung.

63.62. Comparative forms are central

Typically, je and desto/umso are followed by a comparative or a quantity expression such as mehr or weniger.

Examples:

Je früher, desto besser.

Je mehr Erfahrung man hat, desto sicherer entscheidet man.

64.63. Word order in the je clause

The je part behaves like a subordinate clause; the finite verb stands at the end.

Examples:

Je länger die Diskussion dauert, ...

65.64. Word order in the desto/umso clause

desto/umso + comparative often occupies the first position of the main clause; the finite verb follows.

Examples:

..., desto schwieriger wird die Entscheidung.

66.65. desto and umso

Both forms are largely interchangeable in this construction. Region and style can influence preference.

Examples:

Je länger wir warten, umso schwieriger wird es.

67.66. Argumentative use

The construction is useful for expressing relationships, tendencies and gradual effects.

Examples:

Je höher die Kosten steigen, desto stärker wächst der politische Druck.

68.67. Typical error with je ... desto

The je clause should retain subordinate-clause order, while the desto clause uses main-clause order.

Examples:

✅ Je länger wir warten, desto schwieriger wird es.

69.68. teils ... teils: core meaning

teils ... teils shows that something is distributed or occurs in two different ways.

Examples:

Die Reaktionen waren teils positiv, teils kritisch.

70.69. Typical use

The construction is common in factual summaries, reports and nuanced evaluations.

Examples:

Die Änderungen wurden teils begrüßt, teils abgelehnt.

71.70. Parallelism with teils ... teils

Here too, the two sides should be grammatically parallel whenever possible.

Examples:

teils freiwillig, teils verpflichtend

72.71. Contrast with einerseits ... andererseits

teils ... teils describes an actual distribution or mixture; einerseits ... andererseits organizes two perspectives or sides of an argument.

Examples:

teils online, teils vor Ort

73.72. Typical error with teils ... teils

The construction does not fit every simple list. There should be a genuine distribution, mixture or division.

Examples:

Die Arbeit findet teils online, teils im Büro statt.

74.73. Choose connectors by function

Before choosing the form, identify the logical task: addition, negation, alternative, concession, perspective shift, organization, proportion or distribution.

Addition → sowohl ... als auch / nicht nur ... sondern auch
Negation → weder ... noch
Alternative → entweder ... oder
Einräumung → zwar ... aber
zwei Seiten → einerseits ... andererseits
zwei Argumente → zum einen ... zum anderen
Proportion → je ... desto / umso
Verteilung → teils ... teils

75.74. Parallelism as a check

A reliable check is: Do the two linked parts have the same grammatical function and a comparable form?

Examples:

sowohl die Kosten als auch die Qualität

nicht nur schnell, sondern auch zuverlässig

76.75. Constituent or whole clause?

Many word-order problems become easier once you determine whether only two constituents or two complete clauses are being linked.

Examples:

entweder heute oder morgen

Entweder wir gehen heute, oder wir fahren morgen.

77.76. Recognizing argumentative weighting

sowohl ... als auch is usually balanced, nicht nur ... sondern auch intensifies, and zwar ... aber often gives greater weight to the second part.

Examples:

Die Unterschiede sind sowohl grammatisch als auch pragmatisch.

78.77. Structuring pros and cons clearly

einerseits ... andererseits works when two sides should be made visible; if needed, your own evaluation can follow afterward.

Examples:

Einerseits ..., andererseits ... Insgesamt ...

79.78. More formal argumentation

zum einen ... zum anderen often sounds more factual and integrated than repeatedly using erstens ... zweitens.

Examples:

Zum einen verbessert die Reform die Planung, zum anderen schafft sie mehr Transparenz.

80.79. Avoiding overuse

A good B2 text does not need a two-part connector in every sentence. Variation with simpler connectors and clear main clauses improves readability.

Examples:

Variation statt Dauergebrauch

81.80. What to remember

At B2, two-part connectors are primarily tools for logic and discourse organization. The key factors are function, parallelism, word order and argumentative weighting.

sowohl ... als auch → gleichwertige Addition
nicht nur ... sondern auch → Addition + Steigerung
weder ... noch → doppelte Negation
entweder ... oder → Alternative
zwar ... aber → Einräumung + stärkerer Gegenpunkt
einerseits ... andererseits → zwei Seiten
zum einen ... zum anderen → zwei Argumentpunkte
je ... desto/umso → proportionale Beziehung
teils ... teils → Verteilung / Mischung

82.Summary

The most important two-part connectors for B2 argumentation are:

sowohl ... als auch
→ A and B are equally valid

nicht nur ... sondern auch
→ A is true; B adds emphasis

weder ... noch
→ neither A nor B is true

entweder ... oder
→ choice between A and B

zwar ... aber
→ A is conceded; B often carries more weight

einerseits ... andererseits
→ two perspectives or sides

zum einen ... zum anderen
→ two argument points

je ... desto / umso
→ proportional development

teils ... teils
→ distribution or mixture

The key B2 principle:

Link structures that are as parallel as possible, and choose the pair by logical function, not merely by stylistic effect.
