Temporal clauses are one of the main tools for organising connected B2 German. The key is not to memorise eight translations, but to understand what time relation the speaker creates between two situations. The same two events can often be presented from different temporal viewpoints, and tense choice adds another layer of perspective.
1.Core map
A compact orientation before the detailed sections:
| Connector | Core relation | Typical reference |
|---|---|---|
| als | one specific past frame | past |
| wenn | repetition; present/future | all times except single past frame |
| während | overlap / simultaneity | all times |
| bevor | A before B | all times |
| nachdem | A completed before B | all times |
| seitdem | from a starting point onward | continuing relation |
| bis | up to an end point | boundary |
| solange | throughout a duration | duration / often condition-like |
2.1. The temporal map
Temporalsätze do more than answer “when?”. They organise two situations in time. At B2, it is useful to classify the relation before choosing the connector: one-time past, repetition, simultaneity, before/after, starting point, end point, or duration.
Examples:
- Als ich in Hamburg wohnte, fuhr ich oft mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit.
- Während sie telefonierte, machte sie sich Notizen.
- Nachdem die Sitzung beendet worden war, gingen alle nach Hause.
3.2. The basic word-order mechanism
All eight core connectors introduce subordinate clauses. The finite verb therefore stands at the end. If the temporal clause comes first, the following main clause begins with the finite verb: the whole subordinate clause occupies position 1.
Examples:
- Wenn ich mehr Zeit habe, besuche ich meine Freunde.
- Ich besuche meine Freunde, wenn ich mehr Zeit habe.
- Bevor wir anfangen, klären wir noch eine Frage.
4.3. als: one specific time in the past
Temporal als typically refers to a single past situation or to a past period viewed as one completed frame. It does not normally introduce present or future time.
Examples:
- Als ich gestern nach Hause kam, war niemand da.
- Als sie ihr Studium beendet hatte, zog sie nach Köln.
- Als ich noch ein Kind war, lebten wir auf dem Land.
5.4. als can frame a longer past period
“One-time” does not mean “one second”. A whole phase of life can be treated as one past frame. The decisive point is that the period is located in the past and is not presented as a repeated trigger.
Examples:
- Als wir in München lebten, gingen wir oft in die Berge.
- Als er noch Student war, arbeitete er am Wochenende.
- Als das Unternehmen noch klein war, kannten sich fast alle Mitarbeitenden.
6.5. wenn: repetition, present, and future
Temporal wenn is used for repeated events and for present or future situations. In the future, German very often uses the present tense if the time reference is already clear.
Examples:
- Wenn ich früh aufstehe, bin ich tagsüber produktiver.
- Wenn wir morgen ankommen, rufe ich dich an.
- Wenn sie früher zu Besuch kam, brachte sie immer Kuchen mit.
7.6. als vs wenn
The central contrast is not simply “past vs present”. The more precise distinction is: als for a single past frame; wenn for repetition and for present/future time. Repeated past events therefore take wenn.
Examples:
- Als ich ihn zum ersten Mal traf, arbeitete er in Bonn.
- Wenn ich ihn damals traf, sprachen wir meistens über Musik.
- Wenn ich ihn nächste Woche treffe, erzähle ich ihm davon.
8.7. während: simultaneity
Temporal während presents two processes as overlapping. The situations do not need to begin or end at exactly the same moment; what matters is that they share a relevant time span.
Examples:
- Während ich koche, hört mein Bruder Musik.
- Während die Gäste warteten, wurde der Raum vorbereitet.
- Sie beantwortete E-Mails, während sie im Zug saß.
9.8. während: temporal or contrastive?
At B2, während must be read from context. It can mean “while” temporally, but it can also introduce a contrast similar to “whereas”. A temporal interpretation connects time; a contrastive interpretation compares different facts.
Examples:
- Während ich arbeitete, schlief das Kind.
- Während Paul gern im Büro arbeitet, arbeitet Lea lieber zu Hause.
- Während des Gesprächs blieb sie ruhig.
10.9. bevor: event A happens before event B
bevor introduces the later event from the perspective of the main clause: the action in the main clause takes place first, and the bevor-clause sets the later boundary.
Examples:
- Bevor ich das Haus verlasse, prüfe ich die Fenster.
- Wir besprachen die Details, bevor wir den Vertrag unterschrieben.
- Bevor die Maschine gestartet wird, muss sie kontrolliert werden.
11.10. nachdem: event A is completed before event B
nachdem introduces the earlier event. The clause tells us what was already completed before the event in the main clause. This makes nachdem especially useful in narratives and process descriptions.
Examples:
- Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, machten wir einen Spaziergang.
- Nachdem sie die Daten geprüft hatte, schrieb sie den Bericht.
- Nachdem die Ware geliefert worden war, wurde die Rechnung bezahlt.
12.11. Tense relations with nachdem
In a past narrative, Plusquamperfekt in the nachdem-clause often makes anteriority explicit, while Präteritum or Perfekt marks the later event. In present/future contexts, Perfekt can mark a completed earlier event. The connector expresses the relation; the tense expresses the chosen temporal perspective.
Examples:
- Nachdem er angekommen war, rief er seine Familie an.
- Nachdem ich die E-Mail gelesen habe, antworte ich dir.
- Nachdem wir alles vorbereitet haben, können wir beginnen.
13.12. bevor vs nachdem: two viewpoints on the same sequence
Both connectors can describe the same chronology from opposite perspectives. bevor looks forward from the earlier action to the later one; nachdem looks back from the later action to what has already happened.
Examples:
- Bevor sie abreiste, gab sie den Schlüssel zurück.
- Nachdem sie den Schlüssel zurückgegeben hatte, reiste sie ab.
- Bevor wir entschieden, sammelten wir Informationen.
14.13. seitdem: from a starting point until now or another reference point
seitdem connects a starting event with a continuing state or repeated development. The relation extends from that starting point up to the relevant reference time.
Examples:
- Seitdem ich hier wohne, fahre ich mit dem Rad zur Arbeit.
- Seitdem sie die Stelle gewechselt hat, wirkt sie entspannter.
- Er liest viel mehr, seitdem er weniger fernsieht.
15.14. Tenses with seitdem
If a situation has continued up to the present, German typically uses the present tense for the ongoing state. The starting event can appear in Perfekt when it is viewed as completed.
Examples:
- Seitdem ich Deutsch lerne, verstehe ich viele Texte besser.
- Seitdem wir umgezogen sind, brauchen wir weniger Zeit zur Arbeit.
- Seitdem die Software aktualisiert wurde, läuft das System stabiler.
16.15. seit vs seitdem
seit is a preposition or adverb; seitdem is often a conjunction when a full clause follows. Compare a noun phrase with a complete proposition.
Examples:
- Seit meinem Umzug arbeite ich häufiger zu Hause.
- Seitdem ich umgezogen bin, arbeite ich häufiger zu Hause.
- Wir kennen uns seit zehn Jahren.
17.16. bis: an end point
bis marks the point up to which a situation continues. The main clause normally describes what remains true until the event in the bis-clause occurs.
Examples:
- Ich warte hier, bis du zurückkommst.
- Wir blieben im Büro, bis der Bericht fertig war.
- Bis die Entscheidung fällt, ändert sich nichts.
18.17. Future meaning after bis without Futur I
A bis-clause can clearly refer to the future even with Präsens. German does not need werden merely because the event is later; the temporal connector already creates the future relation.
Examples:
- Ich bleibe hier, bis du kommst.
- Wir warten, bis alle Unterlagen vorliegen.
- Bis das Projekt abgeschlossen ist, arbeiten mehrere Teams daran.
19.18. solange: duration with the same boundary
solange focuses on the duration during which one situation remains valid. It can mean “for as long as” and often implies that the main situation changes when the condition/time span ends.
Examples:
- Solange du hier bist, kannst du mein Fahrrad benutzen.
- Solange die Prüfung läuft, bleiben die Handys ausgeschaltet.
- Ich unterstütze das Projekt, solange die Bedingungen stimmen.
20.19. bis vs solange
bis focuses on the end point; solange focuses on the duration before that end. They can sometimes refer to the same period, but they organise the information differently.
Examples:
- Ich warte, bis der Bus kommt.
- Solange der Bus noch nicht da ist, warte ich hier.
- Solange die Daten fehlen, können wir nicht entscheiden.
21.20. während vs solange
während simply locates two situations in overlapping time. solange adds the idea that one situation remains valid throughout the whole duration of the other and can therefore sound condition-like.
Examples:
- Während du hier bist, arbeite ich im Nebenzimmer.
- Solange du hier bist, kannst du im Gästezimmer schlafen.
- Während die Maschine läuft, darf die Abdeckung nicht geöffnet werden.
22.21. Time clause first: framing the message
A fronted temporal clause establishes the time frame before the main information. This is useful in narratives, reports, instructions, and argumentative texts.
Examples:
- Nachdem die Ergebnisse veröffentlicht worden waren, begann die Diskussion.
- Während die Verhandlungen liefen, änderte sich die Lage mehrfach.
- Sobald wir mehr wissen, informieren wir alle Beteiligten.
23.22. Time clause after the main clause: adding timing
When the main clause comes first, the speaker presents the core event and adds the time relation afterwards. This often sounds more linear in conversation.
Examples:
- Ich melde mich, wenn ich angekommen bin.
- Wir gingen sofort nach Hause, nachdem die Veranstaltung beendet war.
- Sie blieb im Gebäude, bis der Techniker kam.
24.23. Temporal clauses in longer sentence brackets
With modal verbs, perfect forms, passive voice, or separable verbs, the whole verbal complex moves to the end of the subordinate clause. The connector does not change this core subordinate-clause rule.
Examples:
- Bevor die Anlage eingeschaltet werden kann, muss sie geprüft werden.
- Nachdem er den Termin abgesagt hatte, rief er noch einmal an.
- Wenn wir früher hätten anfangen können, wären wir schon fertig.
25.24. Modal verbs in temporal clauses
Modal verbs are fully compatible with temporal connectors. The finite modal stands at the end in a simple subordinate clause; with more complex perfect/modal combinations, the verbal cluster becomes denser and requires careful reading.
Examples:
- Bevor wir gehen können, müssen wir noch unterschreiben.
- Solange du warten musst, kannst du hier sitzen.
- Wenn sie früher kommen kann, beginnt die Sitzung eher.
26.25. Perfect forms and completed events
Perfekt can mark an event as completed relative to a present or future reference point. In temporal clauses, this is especially natural with nachdem, wenn, and sobald-type meanings.
Examples:
- Wenn ich den Bericht fertiggeschrieben habe, schicke ich ihn dir.
- Nachdem wir alles besprochen haben, treffen wir eine Entscheidung.
- Wenn die Gäste angekommen sind, beginnen wir mit dem Essen.
27.26. Plusquamperfekt in narratives
Plusquamperfekt is a powerful narrative tool for moving one step further back from an already past reference point. nachdem often supports this relation, but Plusquamperfekt is chosen because of the narrative time structure, not because nachdem mechanically requires it.
Examples:
- Nachdem sie den Vertrag unterschrieben hatte, begann das Projekt.
- Er war erleichtert, nachdem er die Prüfung bestanden hatte.
- Als wir ankamen, hatte der Film bereits begonnen.
28.27. Passive voice in process descriptions
Temporal clauses combine naturally with passive voice when the process is more important than the actor. This is common in instructions, technical texts, reports, and formal descriptions.
Examples:
- Bevor das Gerät benutzt wird, muss es vollständig geladen werden.
- Nachdem die Daten ausgewertet worden waren, wurden die Ergebnisse veröffentlicht.
- Während die Straße repariert wird, bleibt eine Spur gesperrt.
29.28. Negation changes the temporal boundary
Negation can change what exactly counts as the starting or ending point. With solange ... nicht, the clause often describes the entire period before a future change.
Examples:
- Solange wir keine Antwort bekommen, warten wir.
- Ich gehe nicht, bevor wir eine Lösung gefunden haben.
- Solange der Fehler noch auftritt, wird das System weiter beobachtet.
30.29. Temporal connectors and information structure
The choice of connector also affects what the reader treats as background and what becomes the main event. Temporal clauses often provide the frame; the main clause carries the communicative peak.
Examples:
- Während die Nachfrage sank, investierte das Unternehmen weiter.
- Nachdem mehrere Probleme aufgetreten waren, änderte das Team seine Strategie.
- Seitdem die Regeln geändert wurden, gibt es weniger Beschwerden.
31.30. From adverbial sequence to subordinate clause
B2 writing becomes more cohesive when independent time adverbs are sometimes replaced by temporal clauses. The content can stay similar while the text becomes syntactically more integrated.
Examples:
- Zuerst prüften wir die Daten. Danach veröffentlichten wir den Bericht.
- Nachdem wir die Daten geprüft hatten, veröffentlichten wir den Bericht.
- Währenddessen bereitete ein anderes Team die Präsentation vor.
32.31. Temporal chains in complex narratives
Several temporal relations can appear in one paragraph or even one sentence. The reader needs clear reference points: what happened earlier, what overlapped, what continued, and where the sequence ended.
Examples:
- Nachdem wir angekommen waren, warteten wir, bis das Büro öffnete.
- Während wir warteten, rief ich einen Kollegen an.
- Als das Büro schließlich öffnete, gingen wir sofort hinein.
33.32. Register and genre
The core connectors are neutral and occur in both speech and writing. At B2, the difference lies less in “formal vs informal connector” and more in sentence density, tense control, nominal style, and how explicitly the chronology is signalled.
Examples:
- Nachdem die Untersuchung abgeschlossen worden war, wurden die Ergebnisse dokumentiert.
- Wenn ich nachher Zeit habe, rufe ich dich an.
- Während des Berichts wurden mehrere Rückfragen gestellt.
34.33. Typical mistakes
Common errors come from translating one connector mechanically: using als for repeated past events, using wenn for a single past frame, confusing bis with solange, or forgetting verb-final order. Another frequent problem is using Futur I where present tense already expresses future time naturally.
Examples:
- Als ich gestern ankam, begann die Besprechung.
- Wenn ich früher in Berlin war, besuchte ich immer dieses Café.
- Ich warte, bis du kommst.
35.34. A B2 decision algorithm
Choose by relation, not by translation. Ask: Is it one specific past frame? repeated/present/future? overlap? earlier/later sequence? a starting point? an end boundary? duration? Then choose the connector and only afterwards decide the tense that fits the temporal perspective.
Examples:
- Als ich dort ankam, war das Büro schon geschlossen.
- Nachdem ich die Nachricht gelesen hatte, verstand ich die Situation besser.
- Solange wir keine neuen Informationen haben, bleibt die Entscheidung offen.
36.Summary
At B2, temporal clauses are best understood as a system of relations, not a list of conjunctions.
- als — one specific past frame.
- wenn — repetition, present, or future.
- während — overlapping time; context can also make it contrastive.
- bevor — the main-clause event happens first.
- nachdem — the subordinate-clause event is already completed first.
- seitdem — a relation continues from a starting point.
- bis — a situation continues up to an end point.
- solange — a situation remains valid throughout a duration.
The connector expresses the temporal relation; tense expresses the temporal perspective. This is why a B2 learner should decide the relation first and the tense second.
