Passive Review: Präsens

Learn and practise: Passive Review: Präsens.

1.What this page explains

The present passive describes what happens to a person, thing or process. The agent is often unimportant, unknown or deliberately not mentioned.

Typical examples:

Die Tür wird geöffnet.

Die Rechnung wird heute bezahlt.

In dieser Firma werden viele Produkte hergestellt.

The central form is:

werden + Partizip II

In the active voice, the focus is often on who acts. In the passive voice, the focus shifts to the process or the affected object.

This B1 page systematically reviews the essentials and extends them to real process descriptions: active → passive, sentence bracket, von + dative, durch + accusative, dative and prepositional objects, questions, negation, subordinate clauses, impersonal passive, and common texts from everyday life, work and administration.

1. The core idea of the passive

In the active voice, the agent is central.

Der Techniker repariert den Computer.

In the passive voice, the process or affected object is central.

Der Computer wird repariert.

The basic situation is similar, but the perspective changes.

2. The basic formula

Present passive:

werden + Partizip II

Typical forms:

wird geöffnet
wird repariert
werden verkauft
werden kontrolliert

werden carries person and number; the participle remains unchanged.

3. Present forms of werden

PersonForm
ichwerde
duwirst
er / sie / eswird
wirwerden
ihrwerdet
sie / Siewerden

Die Pakete werden morgen geliefert.

4. Singular and plural

Singular:

Die Rechnung wird bezahlt.

Plural:

Die Rechnungen werden bezahlt.

Only werden changes:

wird ↔ werden

5. Comparing active and passive

Active:

Die Firma produziert Maschinen.

Passive:

Maschinen werden produziert.

In the active, die Firma is the subject. In the passive, Maschinen becomes the new subject.

6. The accusative object becomes the subject

Typical active sentence:

Der Mechaniker repariert den Motor.

Accusative object:

den Motor

Passive:

Der Motor wird repariert.

The case changes because der Motor is now the subject.

7. The agent can disappear

Active:

Jemand öffnet die Tür.

Passive:

Die Tür wird geöffnet.

The agent is not grammatically required. This makes the passive useful when the person is unknown or unimportant.

8. Why use the passive?

Typical reasons:

agent unknown
agent unimportant
process more important
process description
objective style

Die Straße wird repariert.

Who exactly is doing the work is not essential to the message.

9. Passive in process descriptions

The passive is especially common when process steps are described.

Zuerst werden die Daten gesammelt.
Dann werden sie geprüft.
Anschließend werden sie gespeichert.

The sequence is central, not the people.

10. Reviewing the past participle

The passive requires the past participle.

machen → gemacht
öffnen → geöffnet
reparieren → repariert
bezahlen → bezahlt
schreiben → geschrieben
bringen → gebracht

Participles follow the normal formation rules.

11. Separable verbs

abholen → abgeholt
aufmachen → aufgemacht
vorbereiten → vorbereitet

Das Paket wird morgen abgeholt.

The passive uses the participle, so the normal present-tense separation is no longer visible.

12. Verbs ending in -ieren

kontrollieren → kontrolliert
organisieren → organisiert
reparieren → repariert

Die Maschine wird regelmäßig kontrolliert.

Verbs ending in -ieren do not take ge-.

13. Inseparable prefixes

bezahlen → bezahlt
verkaufen → verkauft
bestellen → bestellt
erklären → erklärt

Die Rechnung wird online bezahlt.

Again, there is no ge-.

14. Word order in a main clause

Die Bestellung wird heute bearbeitet.

Structure:

Die Bestellung | wird | heute | bearbeitet.

werden is in position 2. The participle stands at the end.

15. Another element in position 1

Heute wird die Bestellung bearbeitet.

Heute | wird | die Bestellung | bearbeitet.

The normal V2 rule also applies in the passive.

16. Negation with nicht and kein

Die Rechnung wird heute nicht bezahlt.

Heute werden keine Pakete verschickt.

nicht negates an action or sentence element; kein belongs to a noun. The passive frame stays unchanged.

17. Yes/no questions

Wird die Rechnung heute bezahlt?

Structure:

Wird | die Rechnung | heute | bezahlt?

Finite werden stands first.

18. W-questions

Wann wird das Paket geliefert?

Wie wird das Problem gelöst?

Wo werden die Produkte hergestellt?

Question word → finite verb → other elements → participle.

19. von + dative: naming the agent

Der Vertrag wird von der Chefin unterschrieben.

von + dative often names an acting person or institution.

von dem Mann → vom Mann
von der Firma
von den Mitarbeitern

The sentence still focuses on the process.

20. durch + accusative: means or cause

Die Maschine wird durch einen Sensor gesteuert.

Die Straße wird durch den starken Regen beschädigt.

A useful B1 distinction:

von → agent
durch → means / cause / process

21. Dative objects stay dative

Active:

Die Firma schickt dem Kunden die Rechnung.

Passive:

Die Rechnung wird dem Kunden geschickt.

die Rechnung becomes the subject. dem Kunden remains dative.

22. Prepositional objects remain

Active:

Man informiert die Kunden über die Änderung.

Passive:

Die Kunden werden über die Änderung informiert.

The preposition and its case remain unchanged.

23. Active with man and passive

Active:

Man kontrolliert die Tickets am Eingang.

Passive:

Die Tickets werden am Eingang kontrolliert.

The passive often replaces impersonal man and can sound more objective.

24. Impersonal passive

A passive construction is possible in certain cases even without an accusative object.

Es wird heute viel gearbeitet.

Hier wird nicht geraucht.

Heute wird getanzt.

The activity is central; no specific person is needed.

25. The role of formal es

Es wird heute viel gearbeitet.

When another element occupies position 1, es often disappears:

Heute wird viel gearbeitet.

This es does not refer to a concrete thing.

26. Passive in subordinate clauses

Ich weiß, dass die Rechnung heute bezahlt wird.

In a subordinate clause, the verb complex stands at the end:

..., dass die Rechnung heute bezahlt wird.

The participle stands before finite werden.

27. Passive with weil and relative clauses

Wir warten, weil die Straße noch repariert wird.

Das ist das Produkt, das in Deutschland hergestellt wird.

In both cases, Partizip II + werden stands at the end of the subordinate clause.

28. Present passive can also refer to the future

Present passive can refer to the present, regular processes or planned future events.

Die Straße wird gerade repariert.
Die Daten werden täglich gespeichert.
Der Vertrag wird morgen unterschrieben.

The time context determines the meaning.

29. Process passive vs state

This page focuses on the process passive:

werden + Partizip II

Compare:

Die Tür wird geöffnet. → process
Die Tür ist geöffnet. → state

Do not confuse werden and sein.

30. Not every verb forms a natural passive

Transitive verbs are especially typical:

reparieren
öffnen
bezahlen
kontrollieren
schreiben

Verbs without an accusative object often require an impersonal passive or another structure.

So the passive should not be formed mechanically from every verb.

31. Active → passive: a reliable algorithm

Starting point:

Die Firma liefert die Ware.

Steps:

1. find the accusative object → die Ware
2. make it the new subject → die Ware

Result:

Die Ware wird geliefert.

51. A reading analysis algorithm

With a sentence such as:

Die Dokumente werden von der Personalabteilung geprüft.

ask:

1. passive signal? → werden + participle
2. subject? → die Dokumente
3. process? → prüfen
4. agent named? → von der Personalabteilung

This makes the structure transparent quickly.

52. What to remember

The central form is:

werden + Partizip II

Especially important:

  • The passive focuses on the process.
  • The accusative object of the active sentence typically becomes the subject.
  • The agent can be omitted.
  • werden is conjugated; the participle remains unchanged.
  • In a main clause, werden is in position 2 and the participle is at the end.
  • In a subordinate clause, the verb complex stands at the end: ..., weil die Straße repariert wird.
  • von + dative often names an acting person or institution.
  • durch + accusative often names a means or cause.
  • Dative and prepositional objects remain.
  • Impersonal passive is possible: Hier wird gearbeitet.
  • werden + participle describes a process; sein + participle often a state.
  • The passive is especially common in process descriptions, administration, reports, workflows and instructions.
  • The next pages extend the system with passive Präteritum, modal verbs and Partizip II as an adjective.

7.Summary

Basic form:

werden + Partizip II

Active:

Die Firma repariert die Maschine.

Passive:

Die Maschine wird repariert.

With an agent:

Die Maschine wird von der Firma repariert.

Process:

Zuerst werden die Daten gesammelt.
Dann werden sie geprüft.
Danach werden sie gespeichert.

The key idea is:

The passive shifts the focus away from the agent and toward the process or affected object.
