Passiv Präteritum

Learn and practise: Passiv Präteritum.

At B1, recognizing the form is no longer enough. It is important to understand why a speaker chooses the passive and how it works in connected reporting.

1.Core idea

The passive in the Präteritum describes past processes and actions when the event is more important than the person who performed it. The basic pattern is wurde / wurden + past participle.

2.1. Core pattern

The central pattern is: subject + wurde/wurden + ... + past participle. In a main clause, the finite form of werden is in position 2 and the participle is at the end.

  • Das Auto wurde repariert. — The car was repaired.
  • Die Fenster wurden gestern gereinigt. — The windows were cleaned yesterday.
  • Ich wurde informiert. — I was informed.

3.2. Conjugation of werden in the Präteritum

The passive uses the Präteritum forms of werden: ich wurde, du wurdest, er/sie/es wurde, wir wurden, ihr wurdet, sie/Sie wurden. The past participle itself does not change.

  • Du wurdest angerufen. — You were called.
  • Er wurde eingeladen. — He was invited.
  • Wir wurden kontrolliert. — We were checked.
PersonFormExample
ichwurdeIch wurde informiert.
duwurdestDu wurdest angerufen.
er/sie/eswurdeEr wurde eingeladen.
wirwurdenWir wurden kontrolliert.
ihrwurdetIhr wurdet fotografiert.
sie/SiewurdenSie wurden begrüßt.

4.3. Singular and plural

The form of werden agrees with the new subject. Singular usually uses wurde, plural uses wurden.

  • Ihr wurdet fotografiert. — You were photographed.
  • Sie wurden begrüßt. — They were greeted.
  • Der Brief wurde geschrieben. — The letter was written.

5.4. From active to passive

In the personal process passive, the accusative object of the active clause becomes the nominative subject of the passive clause. The original agent can be omitted or expressed with von + dative.

  • Die Briefe wurden geschrieben. — The letters were written.
  • Die Firma baute das Haus. — The company built the house.
  • Das Haus wurde von der Firma gebaut. — The house was built by the company.

Active: Die Firma baute das Haus.
Passive: Das Haus wurde von der Firma gebaut.

6.5. What changes and what stays the same?

The perspective changes, not the core event. Time expressions, place expressions, and many other complements can remain unchanged.

  • Gestern wurde die Straße gesperrt. — The road was closed yesterday.
  • Im Mai wurde das Projekt gestartet. — The project was started in May.
  • Zuerst wurde der Motor geprüft. — First, the engine was checked.

7.6. Sentence bracket

The passive creates a sentence bracket in main clauses: wurde/wurden on the left, the participle on the right. Subjects, objects, and adverbials appear between them.

  • Danach wurden die Teile ersetzt. — After that, the parts were replaced.
  • Wurde der Termin verschoben? — Was the appointment moved?
  • Wurden die Daten gespeichert? — Were the data saved?

8.7. Time expressions in past narratives

Typical time expressions include gestern, letzte Woche, im Jahr 2020, damals, zuerst, später, and danach. They help structure a sequence of past events.

  • Wann wurde das Gebäude gebaut? — When was the building built?
  • Warum wurde die Sitzung abgesagt? — Why was the meeting cancelled?
  • Die Tür wurde nicht geöffnet. — The door was not opened.

9.8. Inversion after a time element

When a time expression occupies position 1, the finite verb still stays in position 2: Gestern wurde die Straße gesperrt. The subject then often follows wurde/wurden.

  • Der Fehler wurde nicht sofort bemerkt. — The error was not noticed immediately.
  • Es wurde kein Fehler gefunden. — No error was found.
  • Es wurden keine Daten gelöscht. — No data were deleted.

10.9. Yes/no questions

In yes/no questions, wurde/wurden comes first. The participle remains at the end.

  • Der Vertrag wurde von der Chefin unterschrieben. — The contract was signed by the manager.
  • Die Entscheidung wurde von der Regierung getroffen. — The decision was made by the government.
  • Die Straße wurde durch den Sturm blockiert. — The road was blocked by the storm.

11.10. W-questions

In W-questions, the question word comes first and wurde/wurden follows: Wann wurde das Gebäude gebaut?, Warum wurde der Termin abgesagt?

  • Das Fenster wurde durch den Wind geöffnet. — The window was opened by the wind.
  • Dem Kunden wurde eine neue Karte geschickt. — The customer was sent a new card.
  • Den Mitarbeitenden wurden neue Regeln erklärt. — The employees were given explanations of the new rules.

12.11. Negation with nicht

nicht negates the process, an adverbial, or another part of the clause. Its exact position depends on what is negated, while the participle still stays at the end.

  • Sie wurde gestern eingeladen. — She was invited yesterday.
  • Die neuen Computer wurden am Montag geliefert. — The new computers were delivered on Monday.
  • ..., weil die Straße gesperrt wurde. — ...because the road was closed.

13.12. Negation with kein

kein negates nouns without a definite article: Es wurde kein Fehler gefunden. In the passive, kein remains part of the noun phrase.

  • ..., obwohl der Termin verschoben wurde. — ...although the appointment was moved.
  • Das Gebäude, das 1998 gebaut wurde, ist noch in gutem Zustand. — The building that was built in 1998 is still in good condition.
  • Die Maschine, die gestern repariert wurde, funktioniert wieder. — The machine that was repaired yesterday works again.

14.13. Naming the agent with von

If the agent matters, it can be named with von + dative: Der Vertrag wurde von der Chefin unterschrieben. The agent is often omitted when unknown, obvious, or unimportant.

  • Im Jahr 1989 wurde die Grenze geöffnet. — The border was opened in 1989.
  • Später wurde das System modernisiert. — Later, the system was modernized.
  • Das Paket wird heute geliefert. — The parcel is being delivered today.

15.14. von and durch

von typically names people, institutions, or responsible agents. durch more often highlights a means, cause, or triggering force: Die Straße wurde durch den Sturm blockiert.

  • Das Paket wurde gestern geliefert. — The parcel was delivered yesterday.
  • Die Tür wurde geöffnet. — The door was opened.
  • Die Tür war geöffnet. — The door was open.

16.15. Dative objects stay dative

A dative object does not become the subject in the passive. In Man gab dem Kunden eine neue Karte, eine neue Karte becomes the subject while dem Kunden stays dative.

  • Die Firma eröffnete die Filiale. — The company opened the branch.
  • Die Filiale wurde eröffnet. — The branch was opened.
  • Es wurde viel getanzt. — There was a lot of dancing.

17.16. Passive with pronouns and noun phrases

The new subject can be a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun. What matters is which element was the accusative object in the active clause.

  • Gestern wurde lange gearbeitet. — People worked for a long time yesterday.
  • Im Saal wurde nicht geraucht. — There was no smoking in the hall.
  • Die Maschine wurde repariert, weil sie nicht funktionierte. — The machine was repaired because it did not work.

18.17. Passive in subordinate clauses

In subordinate clauses, finite wurde/wurden comes at the end of the verbal group: ..., weil die Straße gesperrt wurde. With the basic pattern, this typically means participle + wurde/wurden.

  • Nachdem der Vertrag geprüft worden war, wurde er unterschrieben. — After the contract had been checked, it was signed.
  • Die Straße wurde gesperrt, sodass der Verkehr umgeleitet wurde. — The road was closed, so traffic was diverted.
  • Die Daten wurden gespeichert, bevor der Computer ausgeschaltet wurde. — The data were saved before the computer was switched off.

19.18. Relative clauses

In relative clauses, the finite form also comes at the end: Das Gebäude, das 1998 gebaut wurde, steht noch heute.

  • Der Plan wurde geändert, aber niemand wurde informiert. — The plan was changed, but nobody was informed.
  • Wurde das Problem schon gelöst? — Has the problem already been solved?
  • Nein, es wurde noch nicht gelöst. — No, it had not been solved yet.

20.19. Passiv Präteritum in reports and narratives

This form is common in reports, historical descriptions, process descriptions, and factual narratives: What happened? What was changed? What was decided?

  • Wer wurde eingeladen? — Who was invited?
  • Was wurde beschlossen? — What was decided?
  • Wie wurde das Problem gelöst? — How was the problem solved?

21.20. Present passive vs past passive

wird + participle describes a process in the present, while wurde + participle describes the same kind of process in the past.

  • Wo wurde das Produkt hergestellt? — Where was the product manufactured?
  • Die Rechnung wurde per E-Mail geschickt. — The invoice was sent by email.
  • Das Formular wurde vollständig ausgefüllt. — The form was filled out completely.
TimeFormExample
Presentwird/werden + participleDas Paket wird heute geliefert.
Präteritumwurde/wurden + participleDas Paket wurde gestern geliefert.

22.21. Process passive vs state with sein

wurde geöffnet describes the process of opening in the past. war geöffnet describes a past state. These meanings are not the same.

  • Die Gäste wurden freundlich begrüßt. — The guests were greeted warmly.
  • Der Raum wurde gründlich gereinigt. — The room was thoroughly cleaned.
  • Die Ergebnisse wurden später veröffentlicht. — The results were published later.

23.22. Passive vs active Präteritum

Active and passive can present the same situation with different focus: Die Firma eröffnete die Filiale. vs. Die Filiale wurde eröffnet. In the passive, the agent moves into the background.

  • Die Ursache wurde schnell gefunden. — The cause was found quickly.
  • Das Problem wurde von einem Techniker behoben. — The problem was fixed by a technician.
  • Die Nachricht wurde an alle Mitarbeitenden geschickt. — The message was sent to all employees.

24.23. Not every clause forms a personal passive

The learning rule accusative object → subject works especially well with transitive verbs. Not every clause can be mechanically turned into a personal passive. Verbs without an accusative object require other structures or may form an impersonal passive.

  • Der Patient wurde sofort untersucht. — The patient was examined immediately.
  • Die Bestellung wurde storniert. — The order was cancelled.
  • Die Tickets wurden online verkauft. — The tickets were sold online.

25.24. Impersonal passive: first orientation

B1 learners also encounter forms such as Es wurde viel getanzt. or Gestern wurde lange gearbeitet. There is no former accusative object becoming a new subject. The core idea remains the same: the process is in focus.

  • Die Maschine musste repariert werden. — The machine had to be repaired.

26.25. Common mistakes

Typical mistakes include forgetting the participle, using war instead of wurde, failing to match wurde/wurden to the subject, keeping the old accusative form, or forgetting verb-final order in subordinate clauses.

27.26. A reliable analysis strategy

A useful four-step analysis is: 1) identify the event and past time, 2) determine the new subject, 3) choose the correct Präteritum form of werden, 4) place the participle at the end. Then check dative objects, the agent, and adverbials.

28.27. Connection to the next passive topics

A natural next step is the passive with modal verbs. The verbal group becomes longer: Die Maschine musste repariert werden. The core passive idea, however, remains unchanged.

29.Summary

  • Präteritum passive: wurde/wurden + past participle.
  • In a personal passive, the former accusative object becomes the nominative subject.
  • wurde/wurden is in position 2 in a main clause; the participle closes the sentence bracket.
  • In a subordinate clause, the verbal group is final: ..., weil die Straße gesperrt wurde.
  • Dative objects remain dative.
  • The agent may be expressed with von + dative, but often it is omitted.
  • wurde geöffnet describes a process; war geöffnet describes a state.
  • In reports and narratives, the passive lets speakers focus on processes and results rather than agents.
