1.How this reference page is organised
This page is a cross-level reference on German compounds and hyphenation. It focuses on three questions:
Is the expression written as one word?
Is a hyphen required?
Can a hyphen improve readability?
The basic rule is simple: German compounds are generally written as one word. The hyphen is not a general separator between compound elements; it has specific functions.
Das Wort Klimaschutzgesetz wird zusammengeschrieben.
Bei EU-Richtlinie ist der Bindestrich erforderlich.
Ein Bindestrich kann ein sehr langes Kompositum leichter lesbar machen.
2.What a compound is
A compound combines two or more linguistic units into a new lexical unit.
Haus + Tür → Haustür
Klima + Schutz → Klimaschutz
Daten + Schutz + Gesetz → Datenschutzgesetz
Its meaning may be transparent, but it need not be fully predictable from the parts. Orthographically, the key point is that the combination is treated as one word.
Eine Haustür gehört zu einem Haus.
Der Klimaschutz betrifft viele politische und wirtschaftliche Bereiche.
Das Datenschutzgesetz regelt den Umgang mit personenbezogenen Daten.
3.Compound or free phrase
Not every sequence of two content words is a compound.
Compare:
die neue Schule
→ adjective + noun phrase
die Musikschule
→ a compound
In a free phrase, the words remain grammatically independent. In a compound, they form one lexical unit.
Die neue Schule liegt am Stadtrand.
Die Musikschule bietet mehrere Kurse an.
Eine Sprachschule kann auf verschiedene Zielgruppen spezialisiert sein.
4.The head is on the right
German noun compounds are typically right-headed. The last element determines the basic grammatical class and semantic core.
Haustür → a type of Tür
Bürostuhl → a type of Stuhl
Sprachkurs → a type of Kurs
The first element specifies the head; the rightmost element is the core.
Ein Bürostuhl ist eine besondere Art von Stuhl.
Ein Sprachkurs ist eine bestimmte Art von Kurs.
Eine Haustür ist die Tür eines Hauses.
5.Gender and inflection come from the head
In noun compounds, the right-hand head normally determines gender and inflection.
die Tür → die Haustür
der Schutz → der Klimaschutz
das Gesetz → das Datenschutzgesetz
Plural formation also follows the head: die Haustüren, die Sprachkurse, die Datenschutzgesetze.
Die Haustüren wurden gestern erneuert.
Mehrere Sprachkurse beginnen im Oktober.
Die neuen Datenschutzgesetze gelten für viele Unternehmen.
6.Core rule: write compounds as one word
Ordinary German compounds are written without spaces.
Arbeitszeit
Kundenservice
Projektleitung
Wasserflasche
A space modeled on English is not the neutral standard solution for ordinary German compounds. German productively joins compound elements into a single written word.
Die Arbeitszeit beginnt um acht Uhr.
Unser Kundenservice ist auch am Samstag erreichbar.
Die Projektleitung informiert alle Beteiligten.
7.Noun + noun
The most common compound type combines two nouns.
Kunde + Dienst → Kundendienst
Projekt + Plan → Projektplan
Sprache + Kurs → Sprachkurs
The result is written as one word. A linking element may occur between the components without requiring a hyphen.
Der Projektplan wurde gestern aktualisiert.
Der Kundendienst beantwortet technische Fragen.
Der Sprachkurs dauert zwölf Wochen.
8.Adjective + noun
An adjective can also form the first element of a fixed compound.
hoch + Schule → Hochschule
klein + Stadt → Kleinstadt
schnell + Zug → Schnellzug
These differ from free adjective phrases such as eine hohe Schule or eine kleine Stadt.
Die Hochschule liegt im Zentrum.
Er ist in einer Kleinstadt aufgewachsen.
Der Schnellzug hält nur an wenigen Bahnhöfen.
9.Verbal elements in compounds
Verb stems or verbal formations can also appear inside compounds.
fahr + Karte → Fahrkarte
les + Brille → Lesebrille
schreib + Tisch → Schreibtisch
The exact form is lexical. Orthographically, the established compound is still written as one word.
Die Fahrkarte gilt für den ganzen Tag.
Meine Lesebrille liegt auf dem Schreibtisch.
Der Schreibtisch steht direkt am Fenster.
10.Multi-part compounds
German compounds can contain more than two elements.
Daten + Schutz + Gesetz
→ Datenschutzgesetz
Projekt + Status + Bericht
→ Projektstatusbericht
Their structure is hierarchical: a smaller unit is often formed first and then combined with another head.
Das Datenschutzgesetz enthält zahlreiche Einzelregelungen.
Der Projektstatusbericht wird monatlich aktualisiert.
Die Unternehmenskommunikationsstrategie wurde überarbeitet.
11.Read compounds from the right
Long compounds are easier to analyse from right to left.
Kundenzufriedenheitsumfrage
→ an Umfrage
→ about Zufriedenheit
→ of Kunden
The right-hand head gives the basic category; elements to the left narrow it step by step.
Die Kundenzufriedenheitsumfrage läuft noch bis Freitag.
Der Energieverbrauchsbericht enthält neue Vergleichsdaten.
Die Qualitätsmanagementabteilung wurde neu organisiert.
12.Linking elements are part of the word, not hyphens
Linking elements can appear between compound elements:
-s-
-n-
-en-
-er-
-e-
They belong to word formation and are written inside the compound. A linking element is not a reason to insert a hyphen.
Die Arbeitszeit wird elektronisch erfasst.
Der Kundenservice ist heute stark ausgelastet.
Das Kinderzimmer wurde neu gestrichen.
13.The linking s
The linking s appears in many established compounds.
Arbeit + s + Zeit → Arbeitszeit
Geburt + s + Tag → Geburtstag
Unternehmen + s + Leitung → Unternehmensleitung
Its occurrence cannot be predicted by one simple rule for every word; lexical families and usage matter.
Die Arbeitszeit ist flexibel geregelt.
Sein Geburtstag fällt in diesem Jahr auf einen Sonntag.
Die Unternehmensleitung hat den Vorschlag angenommen.
14.Linking n and en
Linking -n- and -en- are also common.
Straße + n + Bahn → Straßenbahn
Student + en + Wohnheim → Studentenwohnheim
Woche + n + Ende → Wochenende
The linking form is part of the lexical compound and is written without a hyphen.
Die Straßenbahn fährt alle zehn Minuten.
Das Studentenwohnheim liegt direkt neben der Universität.
Am Wochenende bleibt das Büro geschlossen.
15.Capitalising the whole noun compound
If the complete compound is a noun, it is capitalised as a noun.
Klimaschutz
Onlinehandel
Forschungsprojekt
Its internal complexity does not change the normal capitalisation of the word as a whole.
Der Klimaschutz bleibt ein wichtiges Thema.
Der Onlinehandel wächst in vielen Branchen.
Das Forschungsprojekt läuft noch zwei Jahre.
16.Hyphen for improved readability
With very long or difficult-to-parse compounds, a hyphen can make the structure more visible.
multi-part compound
→ possible structural division with a hyphen
The hyphen should mark a meaningful boundary between components. It is not a device for splitting any long word arbitrarily.
Die Software-Dokumentation wurde vollständig überarbeitet.
Der Kundenservice-Leitfaden ist jetzt leichter zu lesen.
Die Projektmanagement-Software wird morgen aktualisiert.
17.Readability is a genuine orthographic factor
Where hyphenation is optional, readability is a legitimate criterion. A hyphen can be especially useful when:
many elements come together
foreign-word elements are involved
a misleading first parse is likely
the internal structure should remain visible
The chosen spelling should still be consistent.
Der E-Commerce-Bereich wächst weiter.
Die Online-Marketing-Strategie wurde angepasst.
Ein klar gegliedertes Kompositum lässt sich schneller erfassen.
18.Do not combine the hyphen with spaces
A hyphen inside a word formation is written without spaces.
EU-Richtlinie
3-Zimmer-Wohnung
Karl-Marx-Straße
Spaces around the hyphen are not part of normal German compound hyphenation.
Die EU-Richtlinie tritt im kommenden Jahr in Kraft.
Wir suchen eine 3-Zimmer-Wohnung.
Das Büro liegt in der Karl-Marx-Straße.
19.Single letters with a hyphen
When a single letter forms part of a compound, the combination is typically written with a hyphen.
U-Bahn
T-Shirt
x-Achse
The hyphen shows that the individual letter is an independent component of the compound.
Die U-Bahn fährt heute nur alle zwanzig Minuten.
Er trägt ein schwarzes T-Shirt.
Die Werte werden auf der x-Achse dargestellt.
20.Letter names and technical labels
Technical and specialist compounds containing letters also commonly use a hyphen.
A-Moll
B-Seite
T-Zelle
The letter remains visible as a symbol, and the following head is connected by a hyphen.
Das Stück steht in A-Moll.
Auf der B-Seite befindet sich eine Liveaufnahme.
T-Zellen spielen eine wichtige Rolle im Immunsystem.
21.Abbreviations with a hyphen
When an abbreviation is part of a compound, it is generally connected to the head with a hyphen.
EU-Richtlinie
IT-Abteilung
PDF-Datei
Kfz-Steuer
The abbreviation remains visually identifiable as its own unit.
Die IT-Abteilung installiert heute ein neues System.
Bitte senden Sie mir die PDF-Datei per E-Mail.
Die EU-Richtlinie wurde bereits umgesetzt.
22.Multi-part compounds with abbreviations
When several components are involved, hyphens keep the abbreviation clearly integrated.
EU-Datenschutz-Regelung
IT-Sicherheits-Konzept
PDF-Export-Funktion
With very long formations, it is also worth considering whether a simpler formulation would be stylistically better.
Das IT-Sicherheits-Konzept wird jährlich überprüft.
Die PDF-Export-Funktion wurde verbessert.
Für die EU-Datenschutz-Regelung gelten zusätzliche Dokumentationspflichten.
23.Inflectional endings on abbreviations
Inflectional endings are not the same as new compound elements. With many abbreviations, the ending is attached directly.
die CDs
die Lkws
des PCs
A hyphen is not automatically required. The hyphen rule applies when a true compound is formed, as in CD-Player or PC-Tastatur.
Die CDs liegen im oberen Regal.
Mehrere Lkws warten vor dem Gebäude.
Die PC-Tastatur muss ersetzt werden.
24.Digits as compound elements: use a hyphen
When a digit functions as an independent element of a compound, it is typically connected with a hyphen.
3-Zimmer-Wohnung
5-Tage-Woche
24-Stunden-Service
The digit remains visible and the compound structure is marked by the hyphen.
Wir suchen eine 3-Zimmer-Wohnung in der Innenstadt.
Das Unternehmen testet eine 4-Tage-Woche.
Der Anbieter wirbt mit einem 24-Stunden-Service.
25.Spelled-out number words are joined normally
When the number is spelled out and forms an ordinary compound, normal closed spelling applies.
Dreizimmerwohnung
Viertagewoche
Hundertjahrfeier
The exact formation still needs to be natural, but replacing a digit with a written number removes the reason for the digit-based hyphen.
Eine Dreizimmerwohnung wäre für die Familie ausreichend.
Die Viertagewoche wird in einigen Betrieben getestet.
Die Hundertjahrfeier findet im großen Saal statt.
26.Number + unit + head
Multi-part formations containing a digit and a unit are transparently structured with hyphens.
10-Kilometer-Lauf
20-Euro-Schein
500-Meter-Strecke
All elements belong to one complex word formation.
Der 10-Kilometer-Lauf beginnt um neun Uhr.
Ich habe nur einen 20-Euro-Schein dabei.
Die 500-Meter-Strecke wurde neu vermessen.
27.Percentages inside compounds
Percentages can also form part of complex compounds.
5-Prozent-Hürde
10-Prozent-Rabatt
50-Prozent-Anteil
The digit and written-out unit are connected to the head with hyphens. Specialist styles may also use symbol-based forms according to their conventions.
Der Händler bietet einen 10-Prozent-Rabatt an.
Der 50-Prozent-Anteil wurde bereits erreicht.
Die 5-Prozent-Hürde spielt in diesem Modell eine wichtige Rolle.
28.Digits with adjectival derivation
In adjectival formations containing digits, the digit element is commonly attached with a hyphen.
3-jährig
8-stündig
20-seitig
When the number is spelled out, a closed form such as dreijährig or achtstündig is typical.
Das Kind besucht einen 3-jährigen Kurs.
Die 8-stündige Sitzung war sehr anstrengend.
Der Bericht enthält einen 20-seitigen Anhang.
29.Multi-word groups used as compound elements
When an entire phrase functions as the first element of a new compound, its parts are commonly linked by hyphens.
Acht-Stunden-Tag
Mund-zu-Mund-Beatmung
Von-Tür-zu-Tür-Verkauf
The hyphens show that the whole phrase functions together as one compound element.
Der Acht-Stunden-Tag ist historisch hart erkämpft worden.
Die Mund-zu-Mund-Beatmung gehört zur Ersten Hilfe.
Der Von-Tür-zu-Tür-Verkauf ist in dieser Branche selten geworden.
30.Fixed phrases inside new formations
Fixed phrases can also function as a unit inside a compound.
Entweder-oder-Entscheidung
Alles-oder-nichts-Strategie
Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung
Hyphens preserve the internal phrase and show that it functions jointly as one element.
Wir brauchen keine Entweder-oder-Entscheidung.
Die Alles-oder-nichts-Strategie birgt erhebliche Risiken.
Die Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung ist leicht verständlich.
31.Proper names as the first element
Proper names are often connected to a head word with a hyphen.
Goethe-Institut
Schiller-Theater
Bach-Konzert
The hyphen preserves the recognisable form of the name while linking it to the new compound.
Das Goethe-Institut bietet weltweit Sprachkurse an.
Im Schiller-Theater findet heute eine Premiere statt.
Das Bach-Konzert beginnt um zwanzig Uhr.
32.Multi-part personal names
With multi-part personal names, a chain of hyphens shows that the entire name belongs together.
Heinrich-Heine-Universität
Georg-Büchner-Preis
Anne-Frank-Schule
The generic head appears after the full name group.
Sie studiert an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität.
Der Georg-Büchner-Preis ist eine bedeutende literarische Auszeichnung.
Die Anne-Frank-Schule organisiert eine Projektwoche.
33.Street names containing personal names
Street names containing multi-part personal names are typically linked with hyphens.
Karl-Marx-Straße
Konrad-Adenauer-Platz
Sophie-Scholl-Weg
The generic element Straße, Platz, or Weg is orthographically part of the full name.
Das Büro liegt in der Karl-Marx-Straße.
Wir treffen uns am Konrad-Adenauer-Platz.
Die Schule befindet sich am Sophie-Scholl-Weg.
34.Geographical names in compounds
Geographical names can also form part of hyphenated compounds, especially when their identity should remain visible.
Rhein-Main-Gebiet
Nord-Süd-Verbindung
Berlin-Brandenburg-Region
For established geographical names, the official or lexicalised spelling is decisive.
Das Rhein-Main-Gebiet ist wirtschaftlich stark vernetzt.
Die Nord-Süd-Verbindung wird ausgebaut.
Die Berlin-Brandenburg-Region wächst weiter zusammen.
35.Brand and product names
Brand and product names can become elements of compounds. Their official form should remain recognisable where possible.
brand name + product
→ often a hyphenated solution
Advertising typography may differ from standard orthography. Editorial writing should distinguish brand styling from normal spelling.
Die Marken-Website wurde vollständig neu gestaltet.
Für das Produkt-Update ist keine Neuinstallation nötig.
Die Firmen-App erhält im November neue Funktionen.
36.Loanwords as compound elements
Loanwords can function normally inside German compounds.
Softwareentwicklung
Onlinehandel
Marketingstrategie
If the structure becomes difficult to parse, a hyphen may help:
Software-Entwicklung
Online-Marketing-Strategie
The choice depends on lexicalisation and readability.
Die Softwareentwicklung wird intern organisiert.
Die Online-Marketing-Strategie richtet sich an neue Zielgruppen.
Der Onlinehandel hat sich stark verändert.
37.English elements do not automatically require spaces
An English element does not automatically override German compound spelling.
In productive German formations, closed spelling or a hyphen may be appropriate depending on structure, rather than an arbitrary space.
Webseite
Softwareanbieter
E-Commerce-Plattform
Fully borrowed English expressions may have their own lexicalised spelling.
Die Webseite wurde gestern aktualisiert.
Der Softwareanbieter veröffentlicht regelmäßig Sicherheitsupdates.
Die E-Commerce-Plattform unterstützt mehrere Zahlungsmethoden.
38.Check lexicalised loanword spellings
With established loanwords, correct spelling cannot always be derived from general German compound rules alone.
Relevant sources include:
dictionary form
specialist convention
official spelling
This is especially important when the expression has been borrowed as a fixed unit from another language.
Bei festen Fremdwörtern lohnt sich ein Blick ins Wörterbuch.
Die etablierte Schreibweise sollte im gesamten Text einheitlich bleiben.
Fachbegriffe können von allgemeinen Schreibgewohnheiten abweichen.
39.E-Mail as an established hyphenated word
E-Mail is an established hyphenated spelling in German. New compounds attach to it accordingly.
E-Mail-Adresse
E-Mail-Anhang
E-Mail-Verkehr
Its internal capitalisation remains intact, and further elements are connected with hyphens.
Bitte prüfen Sie Ihre E-Mail-Adresse noch einmal.
Der E-Mail-Anhang lässt sich nicht öffnen.
Der interne E-Mail-Verkehr soll reduziert werden.
40.Compounds containing an already hyphenated element
If one component is already hyphenated, the new compound must remain structured so that it is readable.
E-Mail + Adresse → E-Mail-Adresse
T-Shirt + Druck → T-Shirt-Druck
U-Bahn + Netz → U-Bahn-Netz
The existing graphic structure is not simply removed.
Das U-Bahn-Netz wird weiter ausgebaut.
Der T-Shirt-Druck erfolgt direkt vor Ort.
Die E-Mail-Adresse wurde im System geändert.
41.Distinguish hyphen and dash
The hyphen connects elements inside a word formation. The dash is punctuation and can mark parenthetical material, breaks, or ranges.
EU-Richtlinie
→ hyphen
Berlin – Hamburg
→ route/range dash function
The two signs serve different orthographic purposes.
Die EU-Richtlinie wurde geändert.
Die Strecke Berlin – Hamburg ist stark frequentiert.
Ein Bindestrich verbindet Wortbestandteile, ein Gedankenstrich strukturiert den Satz.
42.Distinguish hyphen and line-break hyphen
A hyphen is a permanent part of a word's spelling; a line-break hyphen appears only because the word is split at the end of a line.
E-Mail
→ hyphen always remains
Pro-
jekt
→ split only at line end
When copying or reformatting text, a line-break hyphen must not accidentally become part of the word.
Das Wort E-Mail enthält einen echten Bindestrich.
Das Wort Projekt wird normalerweise ohne Bindestrich geschrieben.
Beim Zeilenumbruch kann ein Wort vorübergehend getrennt erscheinen.
43.Elliptical hyphen with a shared head
The elliptical hyphen indicates that a repeated part of a compound has been omitted.
Kinderbücher und Jugendbücher
→ Kinder- und Jugendbücher
Vorbereitung und Nachbereitung
→ Vor- und Nachbereitung
The hyphen does not represent normal compound hyphenation here; it marks an omitted shared element.
Die Kinder- und Jugendbücher stehen im ersten Stock.
Für die Vor- und Nachbereitung brauchen wir zusätzliche Zeit.
Die Ein- und Ausgänge werden heute kontrolliert.
44.Elliptical hyphen with a shared first element
A shared first element can also be omitted in the second item.
Schulbücher und Schulhefte
→ Schulbücher und -hefte
Sommerkleidung und Sommerschuhe
→ Sommerkleidung und -schuhe
The initial hyphen signals the omitted element that must be mentally restored.
Wir bestellen neue Schulbücher und -hefte.
Die Sommerkleidung und -schuhe liegen bereits im Schaufenster.
Bitte prüfen Sie die Kundenlisten und -adressen.
45.Use the elliptical hyphen only with real parallel structure
The elliptical hyphen works only when the omitted element is genuinely identical in both full words.
Check:
Can both complete words be reconstructed?
Is the omitted element truly the same?
If not, the shortened form becomes misleading or incorrect.
Die Vor- und Nachteile werden getrennt dargestellt.
Wir vergleichen Ein- und Verkaufspreise.
Die Kinder- und Jugendabteilung wurde renoviert.
46.A slash does not replace a hyphen
The slash / typically marks alternatives, ratios, or certain abbreviated forms. It is not a general substitute for the hyphen.
und/oder
km/h
2026/27
True compounds still follow the normal rules of closed spelling or hyphenation.
Bitte wählen Sie eine der Optionen und/oder ergänzen Sie einen Kommentar.
Die Geschwindigkeit beträgt achtzig Kilometer pro Stunde.
Ein Schrägstrich hat eine andere Funktion als ein Bindestrich.
47.Capitalisation inside hyphenated compounds
In hyphenated formations, the grammatical character of individual elements remains visible. Noun elements are capitalised.
EU-Richtlinie
T-Shirt-Druck
Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung
Non-noun function words inside a multi-word group remain lower-case, as für does in the last example.
Die Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung liegt im Anhang.
Der T-Shirt-Druck ist im Preis enthalten.
Die EU-Richtlinie betrifft auch kleine Unternehmen.
48.Place the hyphen at a meaningful structural boundary
When hyphenation is optional, its position should reflect the real structure of the word.
Online-Marketing-Strategie
is easier to parse when meaningful elements remain visible. A hyphen inserted inside a morphologically unified element would be misleading.
Die Online-Marketing-Strategie wurde neu ausgerichtet.
Die Projektmanagement-Software unterstützt mehrere Teams.
Die Wortstruktur sollte durch den Bindestrich klarer und nicht unklarer werden.
49.Use structure to reduce ambiguity
Long compounds can be ambiguous on first reading. An optional hyphen can show which elements belong more closely together.
The principle is:
make structure visible
≠
invent a new meaning
Hyphenation should support the intended morphological analysis.
Die Kundenservice-Leitung beantwortet die Anfrage.
Der Software-Testbericht enthält mehrere offene Punkte.
Eine klare Gliederung reduziert Missverständnisse beim ersten Lesen.
50.Technical terminology
Technical texts contain many combinations of abbreviations, digits, symbols, and specialist terms.
Typical examples include:
USB-C-Anschluss
5-GHz-Band
CAD-Software
Here the hyphen often does more than improve readability; it clearly connects different graphic types of elements.
Der Laptop besitzt zwei USB-C-Anschlüsse.
Das Gerät unterstützt das 5-GHz-Band.
Die CAD-Software wird in der Konstruktion eingesetzt.
51.Scientific and chemical symbols
Formulas and scientific symbols can also be connected to a German head word.
CO₂-Ausstoß
pH-Wert
DNA-Analyse
The hyphen separates the visually special formula or abbreviation element from the ordinary word component.
Der CO₂-Ausstoß soll deutlich sinken.
Der pH-Wert wurde mehrfach gemessen.
Die DNA-Analyse bestätigt das Ergebnis.
52.Administrative and legal language
Administrative and legal German often creates long noun compounds. Closed spelling remains the normal and common solution.
Datenschutzgrundverordnung
Genehmigungsverfahren
Kostenübernahmeerklärung
A hyphen may improve readability in newly formed or especially unwieldy expressions, but established technical terms should not be reformatted unnecessarily.
Das Genehmigungsverfahren dauert mehrere Wochen.
Die Kostenübernahmeerklärung liegt bereits vor.
Die Datenschutzgrundverordnung enthält umfangreiche Vorgaben.
53.Long compounds in academic writing
Academic texts often form long compounds to compress terminology.
Forschungsdatenmanagement
Sprachverarbeitungsmodell
Messwertabweichung
Orthographic correctness alone is not enough: if a word seriously burdens readability, reformulating the phrase may be better than adding more elements.
Das Forschungsdatenmanagement wird zentral koordiniert.
Das Sprachverarbeitungsmodell wurde mit neuen Daten getestet.
Die Messwertabweichung liegt innerhalb des erwarteten Bereichs.
54.Hyphen or reformulation
A hyphen can structure a long word, but it does not solve every stylistic problem.
With very heavy formations, compare three options:
closed compound
hyphenated structure
syntactic reformulation
In specialist writing, the best form is often the one that is both precise and quickly understandable.
Die Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als maximale Wortlänge.
Ein Bindestrich kann die Struktur sichtbar machen.
Manchmal ist eine Formulierung mit mehreren Wörtern die klarere Lösung.
55.Spelling in headings and tables
Headings, tables, and interfaces often tempt writers to insert artificial spaces or design-driven forms. The underlying orthographic word structure generally remains unchanged.
Projektstatus
not automatically: Projekt Status
Kundenservice
not automatically: Kunden Service
Layout and spelling are separate layers.
Auch in einer Überschrift bleibt Projektstatus ein Wort.
Die Tabellenüberschrift Kundenservice folgt der normalen Rechtschreibung.
Grafische Gestaltung sollte die Wortstruktur nicht unnötig verändern.
56.Corporate design and standard spelling
Companies sometimes style product and brand names differently from general orthographic conventions.
Distinguish:
official brand name
editorial prose
general spelling rule
A distinctive brand spelling is not a general pattern that should be transferred to other compounds.
Die offizielle Markenschreibweise kann von der Standardschreibung abweichen.
Im Fließtext sollte die gewählte Form konsequent verwendet werden.
Eine Werbeschreibweise ist nicht automatisch eine allgemeine Rechtschreibregel.
57.Keep house style and terminology consistent
Where several acceptable or stylistically possible forms exist, a longer text needs consistency.
Check:
same term
→ same spelling
same abbreviation
→ same hyphen logic
same product family
→ consistent naming
Consistency improves reading, searching, and terminology management.
Wir verwenden im gesamten Dokument dieselbe Schreibweise.
Die Abkürzungen werden nach einem einheitlichen Muster verbunden.
Eine konsistente Terminologie erleichtert die spätere Überarbeitung.
58.Common errors
1. Writing ordinary compounds with a space
Projekt Plan is not the standard form of the ordinary compound; use Projektplan.
2. Separating every element with a hyphen
A normal word such as Kundenservice does not need a hyphen.
3. Attaching abbreviations without the required structure
In IT-Abteilung or EU-Richtlinie, the hyphen correctly marks the connection.
4. Writing digit compounds without hyphens
Forms such as 3-Zimmer-Wohnung require clear hyphenation.
5. Leaving multi-part proper-name formations unconnected
Names such as Heinrich-Heine-Universität are structured as a unit.
6. Mistaking linking elements for hyphens
Arbeitszeit contains a linking s, not a hyphen.
7. Using the elliptical hyphen without true parallel structure
It may represent only a genuinely identical omitted component.
8. Confusing hyphen and dash
They have different functions and typographic forms.
9. Treating advertising spelling as a general rule
Brand styling can differ from standard spelling.
10. Ignoring readability
Even a formally possible long compound can be stylistically difficult to understand.
Der Projektplan wird als ein Wort geschrieben.
Die IT-Abteilung wird mit einem Bindestrich angeschlossen.
Bei langen Bildungen sollte die Lesbarkeit immer mitgeprüft werden.
59.Decision path for choosing the spelling
For new or uncertain formations, use this sequence:
1. Is it really a compound?
2. Is there an established dictionary spelling?
3. Does it consist of ordinary word elements?
→ usually write as one word
4. Does it contain letters, abbreviations, or digits?
→ check hyphenation
5. Does it contain a whole phrase or proper name?
→ check hyphen structure
6. Is it difficult to parse?
→ consider an optional readability hyphen
7. Would reformulation be clearer?
This combines rule-based spelling with style.
Zuerst prüfe ich, ob die Bildung bereits lexikalisiert ist.
Danach entscheide ich, ob ein Bindestrich vorgeschrieben oder nur hilfreich ist.
Am Ende kontrolliere ich, ob die gewählte Form wirklich gut lesbar ist.
60.Quick reference: which pattern when?
| Structure | typical spelling | example |
|---|---|---|
| ordinary compound | closed | Projektplan |
| compound with linking element | closed | Arbeitszeit |
| single letter + word | hyphen | U-Bahn |
| abbreviation + word | hyphen | IT-Abteilung |
| digit + word group | hyphens | 3-Zimmer-Wohnung |
| multi-part proper name + head | hyphens | Heinrich-Heine-Universität |
| full phrase as first element | hyphens | Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung |
| hard-to-read long compound | optional hyphen where appropriate | Software-Dokumentation |
| omitted shared element | elliptical hyphen | Kinder- und Jugendbücher |
The table gives the main orientation patterns; lexicalised special cases should be checked separately.
Projektplan ist ein normales zusammengeschriebenes Kompositum.
IT-Abteilung verbindet eine Abkürzung mit einem Grundwort.
Kinder- und Jugendbücher enthalten einen Ergänzungsstrich.
61.Typical everyday patterns
For everyday use, these groups are especially useful:
closed:
Arbeitsplatz · Fahrkarte · Kundenservice
with hyphen:
E-Mail-Adresse · EU-Richtlinie · 3-Zimmer-Wohnung
with elliptical hyphen:
Vor- und Nachteile · Ein- und Ausgang
Distinguishing these three patterns prevents many common spelling errors.
Mein Arbeitsplatz befindet sich im zweiten Stock.
Bitte senden Sie die Unterlagen an meine E-Mail-Adresse.
Wir besprechen zunächst die Vor- und Nachteile.
62.Checklist before publishing
Before sending or publishing, a short check is useful:
□ Are ordinary compounds written as one word?
□ Are abbreviations connected correctly to heads?
□ Are digit compounds clearly structured?
□ Are proper names integrated correctly?
□ Have hyphen and dash been distinguished?
□ Are elliptical hyphens genuinely justified?
□ Is spelling consistent throughout?
□ Is a very long compound still readable?
□ Does a loanword need lexical verification?
□ Would reformulation be clearer?
This check combines spelling, terminology, and readability.
Vor der Veröffentlichung prüfe ich die Schreibweise aller Fachbegriffe.
Bei langen Komposita kontrolliere ich besonders die Lesbarkeit.
Eine einheitliche Schreibweise macht den gesamten Text professioneller.
63.Summary
For German compounds and hyphenation, these points are central:
- Ordinary German compounds are generally written as one word.
- In noun compounds, the right-hand head usually determines gender, inflection, and basic semantic class.
- Linking elements such as
-s-,-n-, and-en-belong inside the word and do not trigger a hyphen. - Long compounds can often be analysed from right to left.
- An optional hyphen can make a difficult long formation easier to parse.
- Single letters are typically connected to compounds with a hyphen.
- Abbreviations such as
EU,IT,PDF, andKfzare generally connected to a head with a hyphen. - Digits functioning as independent elements lead to hyphenated forms such as
3-Zimmer-Wohnung. - Multi-part digit formations such as
10-Kilometer-Laufare hyphenated throughout. - Spelled-out number words can form ordinary closed compounds.
- Whole phrases used as compound elements are linked with hyphens.
- Multi-part proper names are integrated into new formations with hyphens.
- Loanwords may participate in closed compounds or be hyphenated for readability; lexicalised forms may need checking.
- Already hyphenated words such as
E-Mailretain their structure in new compounds. - The elliptical hyphen marks omitted shared elements:
Kinder- und Jugendbücher. - Hyphen, dash, and line-break hyphen have different functions.
- Noun elements inside hyphenated formations retain noun capitalisation.
- Specialist language often combines abbreviations, formulas, and heads:
DNA-Analyse,pH-Wert,USB-C-Anschluss. - Administration and academia use many long compounds; not every possible compression is stylistically desirable.
- Brand and corporate-design spellings are not automatically general spelling rules.
- Where several forms are possible, readability and consistency are essential additional criteria.
The core decision is:
ordinary compound?
→ write as one word
letter / abbreviation / digit / multi-part proper name / phrase?
→ check hyphen rule
hard to read?
→ consider a meaningful optional hyphen or reformulation
shared word part omitted?
→ use an elliptical hyphen
Normale deutsche Komposita werden in der Regel zusammengeschrieben.
Ein Bindestrich ist besonders bei Buchstaben, Abkürzungen, Ziffern und komplexen Eigennamen wichtig.
Bei optionaler Bindestrichsetzung sollten Lesbarkeit, Struktur und Konsistenz zusammenpassen.
