Describing and Interpreting Charts

Structure, useful language, and practice for: Describing and Interpreting Charts.

1.What this page explains

At B2, a good chart description is more than listing numbers. You need to select data, compare it, organize it linguistically, and interpret it cautiously.

A reliable structure is:

1. Name the chart type, topic, and source
2. Explain period, unit, and groups
3. Describe the main development
4. Compare key values
5. Highlight notable features
6. Interpret cautiously
7. Summarize briefly

The key distinction is between:

description
→ What does the chart actually show?

interpretation
→ What might the development mean?

Example:

Die Grafik zeigt die Entwicklung der Fahrgastzahlen zwischen 2020 und 2025.

Insgesamt ist ein deutlicher Anstieg zu erkennen.

Besonders auffällig ist, dass die Zahl ab 2023 stark zunimmt.

Eine mögliche Erklärung dafür könnte die Ausweitung des Angebots sein.

The page is reference and self-study material. It contains no exercises or tests.

2.1. The purpose of a chart description

A chart description makes data understandable in language. It reduces complexity and directs attention to the most important developments.

Examples:

Die Grafik zeigt, wie sich die Zahl der Nutzer entwickelt hat.

3.2. Separate description and interpretation

Visible data should be described first. Possible explanations or evaluations come afterward.

Examples:

Die Zahl steigt von 40 auf 55 Prozent.

4.3. Do not mention every number

At B2, selection matters. Describe peaks, lows, turning points, strong changes, and relevant comparisons.

Examples:

Besonders auffällig ist der starke Anstieg zwischen 2023 und 2024.

5.4. Move from overview to detail

A good description begins with the overall picture and then moves to individual data.

Examples:

Insgesamt ist ein Aufwärtstrend zu erkennen.

6.5. Factual style

Chart descriptions are normally factual. Exaggeration and emotional wording should be avoided.

Examples:

Die Werte steigen deutlich.

7.6. Source and context

If source, year, or population are given, they belong in the introduction.

Examples:

Die Daten stammen vom Statistischen Bundesamt.

8.7. Check the unit

Before describing the chart, identify whether it shows percentages, absolute figures, euros, tonnes, people, or an index.

Examples:

Die Angaben erfolgen in Prozent.

9.8. Check the period

For time series, identify the beginning, end, and any relevant phases of the period.

Examples:

Die Grafik umfasst den Zeitraum von 2018 bis 2025.

10.9. Check groups and categories

In bar or pie charts, it is crucial to identify which groups are being compared.

Examples:

Verglichen werden vier Altersgruppen.

11.10. B2 goal: structure data linguistically

At B2, you should not only read what a chart shows but create a clear linguistic hierarchy.

Examples:

Überblick → Vergleich → Auffälligkeit → Interpretation

12.11. Line chart

A line chart is especially useful for showing developments over time.

Examples:

Das Liniendiagramm zeigt die Entwicklung der Preise.

13.12. Bar chart

A bar chart is especially suitable for comparing categories or groups.

Examples:

Das Balkendiagramm vergleicht fünf Branchen.

14.13. Column chart

Columns are often used to compare values across years, groups, or categories.

Examples:

Die Säulen zeigen die Werte für 2022, 2023 und 2024.

15.14. Pie chart

A pie chart shows proportions of a whole.

Examples:

Der größte Anteil entfällt auf die Gruppe der 30- bis 49-Jährigen.

16.15. Table

Tables can also be described like charts. Selecting relevant values is especially important here.

Examples:

Die Tabelle zeigt die durchschnittlichen Ausgaben pro Haushalt.

17.16. Combined charts

Some visuals combine two chart types or two units. In that case, explain both levels separately.

Examples:

Die Balken zeigen die Umsätze, die Linie den Gewinn.

18.17. Map or spatial visualization

With maps, regional differences and spatial patterns are central.

Examples:

Besonders hohe Werte finden sich im Süden des Landes.

19.18. Mention chart type only when useful

The chart type belongs in the introduction but should not become more important than topic, unit, and period.

Examples:

Die Grafik zeigt ...

20.19. Introducing the topic

Typical introductions state directly what is being shown.

Examples:

Die Grafik zeigt die Entwicklung des Energieverbrauchs.

21.20. Using darstellen

darstellen sounds factual and is especially suitable for written descriptions.

Examples:

Das Diagramm stellt die Verteilung der Ausgaben dar.

22.21. Using vergleichen

vergleichen is suitable when several groups or points in time are contrasted.

Examples:

Die Grafik vergleicht die Werte in vier Ländern.

23.22. Naming the source

A source can be introduced with laut, nach Angaben von, die Daten stammen von, or Quelle ist.

Examples:

Die Daten stammen aus einer Umfrage des Instituts.

24.23. Expressing the period

For periods, von ... bis, zwischen ... und, and im Zeitraum von ... bis are especially useful.

Examples:

Die Daten beziehen sich auf den Zeitraum von 2019 bis 2025.

25.24. Expressing the unit

The unit should be stated explicitly when it is important for understanding.

Examples:

Die Angaben erfolgen in Millionen Euro.

26.25. Expressing the population

In surveys, it should be clear who was surveyed or studied.

Examples:

Befragt wurden Personen zwischen 18 und 65 Jahren.

27.26. Keep the introduction concise

For a normal B2 description, two or three sentences are usually enough for chart type, topic, source, period, and unit.

Examples:

Die Grafik zeigt ... Die Daten stammen ... Die Angaben erfolgen ...

28.27. Expressing an increase

For rising values, use verbs such as steigen, zunehmen, wachsen, and sich erhöhen.

Examples:

Der Anteil steigt von 35 auf 48 Prozent.

29.28. Expressing a decrease

For falling values, use sinken, zurückgehen, abnehmen, and sich verringern.

Examples:

Die Zahl sinkt im selben Zeitraum deutlich.

30.29. Expressing stability

When a value barely changes, use stabil bleiben, nahezu unverändert bleiben, or konstant bleiben.

Examples:

Der Wert bleibt zwischen 2022 und 2024 nahezu konstant.

31.30. Expressing fluctuations

schwanken describes repeated upward and downward movement.

Examples:

Die Werte schwanken zwischen 20 und 25 Prozent.

32.31. Peak value

For the highest value, useful phrases include den Höchstwert erreichen, am höchsten liegen, and den Spitzenwert erreichen.

Examples:

2024 erreicht der Anteil mit 62 Prozent seinen Höchstwert.

33.32. Lowest value

For the lowest value, use den Tiefstwert erreichen, am niedrigsten liegen, or auf ... fallen.

Examples:

2021 liegt der Wert mit 18 Prozent am niedrigsten.

34.33. Turning point

When a development changes clearly, you can describe a turning point.

Examples:

Ab 2023 kehrt sich der Trend um.

35.34. Gradual change

langsam, allmählich, schrittweise, and kontinuierlich help describe the speed of a trend.

Examples:

Der Anteil nimmt allmählich zu.

36.35. Sharp change

stark, deutlich, erheblich, and sprunghaft mark a larger change.

Examples:

Zwischen 2023 und 2024 steigt der Wert sprunghaft an.

37.36. Slight change

leicht, geringfügig, and etwas are suitable for small changes.

Examples:

Der Wert geht leicht zurück.

Besides verbs, nominal style can be used: ein Anstieg, ein Rückgang, eine Zunahme, eine Abnahme.

Examples:

Es ist ein deutlicher Anstieg zu erkennen.

39.38. Vary verbal and nominal style

Variation avoids repetition but should not make the description unnecessarily heavy.

Examples:

Der Anteil steigt deutlich. Danach ist nur noch eine geringe Zunahme zu erkennen.

40.39. Comparing values

Comparisons are central when several groups or points in time are shown.

Examples:

Der Wert in Gruppe A liegt deutlich über dem Wert in Gruppe B.

41.40. higher than / lower than

These forms are suitable for direct quantitative comparisons.

Examples:

Der Anteil ist 12 Prozentpunkte höher als im Vorjahr.

42.41. more than / less than

For quantities and absolute figures, mehr and weniger are common.

Examples:

2025 gibt es deutlich mehr Nutzer als 2022.

43.42. twice as high as

For doubling, a precise comparison is better than a vague description.

Examples:

Der Wert ist doppelt so hoch wie 2020.

44.43. almost twice as high

If values are only approximately 2:1, do not say doppelt without qualification.

Examples:

Der Anteil ist fast doppelt so hoch wie in der Vergleichsgruppe.

45.44. similarly high

Values close to each other can be described as similar, almost equal, or comparable.

Examples:

Die Werte in beiden Gruppen sind ähnlich hoch.

46.45. Describing rankings

With several categories, you can rank the highest, second-highest, and lowest values.

Examples:

An erster Stelle liegt Gruppe A, gefolgt von Gruppe B.

47.46. Using gefolgt von

gefolgt von is useful for concise rankings, but the grammatical reference should remain clear.

Examples:

Mit 45 Prozent liegt Gruppe A vorne, gefolgt von Gruppe B mit 38 Prozent.

48.47. Describing gaps

For differences, useful phrases include der Abstand beträgt, der Unterschied liegt bei, and um ... höher/niedriger.

Examples:

Der Unterschied zwischen beiden Gruppen beträgt 8 Prozentpunkte.

49.48. Select comparisons deliberately

Not every value needs to be compared with every other value. Large, surprising, or trend-defining differences matter most.

Examples:

Am deutlichsten unterscheiden sich die beiden Gruppen bei den Wohnkosten.

50.49. Using percentages correctly

Prozent expresses a share out of one hundred. The reference base must be clear.

Examples:

45 Prozent der Befragten ...

51.50. Percentage points vs percent

If a share rises from 40 to 50 percent, the increase is 10 percentage points but 25 percent in relative terms.

Examples:

von 40 % auf 50 % → +10 Prozentpunkte

52.51. Absolute figures

Absolute values such as people, vehicles, or euros should not be confused with percentages.

Examples:

Die Zahl steigt von 200.000 auf 240.000 Personen.

53.52. Distinguishing share and count

A rising share does not automatically mean the absolute number also rises.

Examples:

Der Anteil steigt, obwohl die Gesamtzahl sinkt.

54.53. Index values

With index charts, explain what the base value represents.

Examples:

Der Index 100 entspricht dem Wert des Jahres 2020.

55.54. Average values

An average does not automatically describe the typical situation of every individual.

Examples:

Der Durchschnitt liegt bei 35 Stunden pro Woche.

56.55. Do not confuse median and mean

If the chart shows the median, do not call it the mean.

Examples:

Der Median liegt bei 1.800 Euro.

57.56. Watch for rounding

Rounded values can create small apparent differences. Do not imply more precision than the source provides.

Examples:

rund 30 Prozent

etwa 1,5 Millionen

58.57. Using rund, etwa, knapp, gut

These words help approximate values appropriately in language.

Examples:

knapp 50 Prozent

gut ein Drittel

rund zwei Millionen

59.58. Avoid false precision

If the chart only shows approximate values, the description should remain approximate too.

Examples:

Der Wert liegt bei etwa 60 Prozent.

60.59. Description before interpretation

An interpretation is more convincing when the underlying observation has been clearly described first.

Examples:

Der Anteil steigt ab 2023 stark. Eine mögliche Erklärung könnte ... sein.

61.60. Cautious interpretation language

If the chart itself does not prove a cause, use forms such as könnte, möglicherweise, vermutlich, and denkbar ist.

Examples:

Eine mögliche Erklärung könnte der gestiegene Energiepreis sein.

62.61. Correlation is not automatically causation

Two parallel developments do not prove a causal relationship.

Examples:

Die Grafik zeigt einen Zusammenhang, aber keine eindeutige Ursache.

63.62. Interpret only what the data support

A good interpretation stays close to the information actually shown.

Examples:

Aus der Grafik lässt sich erkennen, dass ...

64.63. Using darauf hindeuten

darauf hindeuten is useful when a tendency is plausible but not fully proven.

Examples:

Die Entwicklung deutet darauf hin, dass die Nachfrage zunimmt.

65.64. Using lässt vermuten

lässt vermuten clearly marks an interpretation as an inference.

Examples:

Der Verlauf lässt vermuten, dass sich der Markt stabilisiert.

66.65. Naming possible causes

Causes may be mentioned if they are marked as hypotheses or supported by context.

Examples:

Möglicherweise hängt der Anstieg mit höheren Förderungen zusammen.

67.66. Interpreting consequences

Possible consequences should also be phrased cautiously if they are not directly shown.

Examples:

Daraus könnte sich ein höherer Investitionsbedarf ergeben.

68.67. Avoid unsupported personal opinion

A chart interpretation is not free opinion writing. Personal evaluation belongs only if the task requires it.

Examples:

Aus den Daten lässt sich schließen, dass ...

69.68. Keep interpretation concise

In a B2 chart description, interpretation should complement the data rather than replace the description itself.

Examples:

Beschreibung zuerst, Interpretation danach.

70.69. A reliable overall structure

A clear structure prevents the description from becoming an unordered list of numbers.

Einleitung: Thema + Diagrammtyp + Quelle + Zeitraum + Einheit
Überblick: wichtigste Gesamttendenz
Hauptteil: zentrale Werte + Vergleiche + Wendepunkte
Interpretation: vorsichtige Deutung
Schluss: knappe Zusammenfassung

71.70. Phrases for notable features

Set phrases can highlight important observations clearly.

Examples:

Besonders auffällig ist, dass ...

Bemerkenswert ist außerdem, dass ...

Deutlich zu erkennen ist ...

72.71. Phrases for comparisons

Comparisons should be varied but precise.

Examples:

Im Vergleich zu ...

Während ... liegt ...

Deutlich höher als ...

73.72. Phrases for developments

A small set of precise trend verbs is often sufficient when used accurately.

Examples:

steigen

sinken

zunehmen

zurückgehen

stabil bleiben

schwanken

74.73. Typical error: listing numbers

Listing every number one after another shows little selection and hides the main message.

Examples:

Besser: zentrale Werte auswählen und vergleichen.

75.74. Typical error: mixing description and explanation

An assumed cause should not be phrased as if it were directly proven by the chart.

Examples:

Besser: Eine mögliche Erklärung könnte ... sein.

76.75. Typical error: wrong comparison base

With percentages, absolute numbers, and time comparisons, it must always be clear what exactly is being compared.

Examples:

10 Prozentpunkte ≠ 10 Prozent

77.76. What to remember

A strong B2 chart description combines selection, precision, comparison, and cautious interpretation. Good language makes the data clearer, not more complicated.

1. Thema + Quelle + Zeitraum + Einheit
2. Gesamttrend
3. wichtigste Werte
4. Vergleiche
5. Auffälligkeiten
6. vorsichtige Interpretation
7. kurzer Schluss

78.Summary

A reliable B2 structure:

Introduction
→ What does the chart show?
→ Source?
→ Period?
→ Unit?

Overview
→ What is the main overall trend?

Main section
→ peaks / lows
→ strong changes
→ relevant comparisons
→ turning points

Interpretation
→ cautious language only
→ do not claim causes that are not supported

Conclusion
→ summarize the central development in one sentence

Useful phrases:

Die Grafik zeigt ...
Insgesamt ist ... zu erkennen.
Der Wert steigt / sinkt ...
Besonders auffällig ist ...
Im Vergleich zu ...
Der Unterschied beträgt ...
Eine mögliche Erklärung könnte ... sein.
Die Entwicklung deutet darauf hin, dass ...

Description means selecting and organizing data. Interpretation means cautiously deriving possible meaning from the data.
