Attributive Comparative and Superlative in Complex Noun Phrases

Learn and practise: Attributive Comparative and Superlative in Complex Noun Phrases.

1.What this page explains

At B2, it is no longer enough to know groß → größer → am größten. The key is how comparative and superlative forms behave before a noun:

ein großes Problem
→ ein größeres Problem
→ das größte Problem

As soon as a comparison form is used attributively, it becomes part of the noun phrase and is declined like any other attributive adjective.

The central idea is:

The comparison marker and the adjective ending are two separate layers.
größer + e = größere, größt + e = größte, besser + en = besseren.

This page therefore connects three systems:

comparison
+
adjective declension
+
complex noun-phrase structure

2.1. Attributive vs predicative

Predicatively, the adjective remains undeclined. Attributively, it stands before the noun and receives a declensional ending. So größer and am größten are not yet complete noun-phrase forms.

Examples

Das Haus ist größer.
ein größeres Haus
Dieses Haus ist am größten.
das größte Haus

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

3.2. The layer model

An attributive comparative can be analysed as stem + -er + declensional ending. The superlative combines stem + -st/-est + declensional ending. This prevents confusion between comparative -er and case endings.

Examples

groß + er + e → größere
interessant + er + er → interessanterer
groß + st + e → größte

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

4.3. Comparative: core pattern

First form the ordinary comparative. Then add the ending required by determiner type, case, gender, and number. Long forms such as interessanterer are therefore structurally normal.

Examples

klein → kleiner → ein kleineres Zimmer
schnell → schneller → eine schnellere Verbindung
interessant → interessanter → ein interessanterer Vorschlag

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

5.4. Superlative: core pattern

Attributively, German normally does not use am + -sten; it uses a declined superlative. The determiner and adjective ending show the noun phrase's grammatical form.

Examples

am wichtigsten → der wichtigste Punkt
am größten → das größte Problem
am schnellsten → die schnellste Verbindung

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

6.5. am größten vs der größte

am größten is predicative or adverbial; der größte is attributive. A phrase such as das am stärksten betroffene Gebiet is different: am stärksten modifies the participle betroffene.

Examples

Das Problem ist am größten.
das größte Problem
das am stärksten betroffene Gebiet

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

7.6. With the definite article

After der/die/das and similar determiners, weak declension predominates. -en is especially frequent in dative, genitive, and plural forms.

Examples

der größere Raum
die bessere Lösung
das wichtigste Argument
mit dem größeren Raum
wegen der höheren Kosten
bei den wichtigsten Kunden

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

8.7. With the indefinite article

After ein/eine, possessives, and kein, the adjective carries more grammatical information where the determiner has no clear ending. Many other forms take -en.

Examples

ein größerer Markt
eine bessere Lösung
ein kleineres Risiko
mein wichtigster Kunde
mit einem größeren Markt
für einen besseren Ablauf

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

9.8. Without an article

Without a determiner, the adjective takes strong endings. This is especially common in formal and nominal B2 prose.

Examples

größerer Druck
höhere Kosten
besseres Material
wichtigere Fragen
höchste Priorität
größtmögliche Sicherheit

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

10.9. Case remains fully active

Comparative and superlative forms do not alter the case system. The same comparison base must adapt to the noun phrase's syntactic role. Comparison never replaces declension.

Examples

ein größerer Markt
einen größeren Markt
einem größeren Markt
eines größeren Marktes

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

11.10. Genitive in complex noun phrases

At B2, comparison forms often occur inside genitive noun phrases. The comparison form, determiner type, and genitive ending must all be controlled at the same time.

Examples

die Folgen höherer Preise
die Entwicklung eines größeren Marktes
die Analyse der wichtigsten Faktoren
die Auswirkungen stärkerer Regulierung

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

12.11. Prepositional phrases

Prepositions determine case while the comparison form remains attributive. The real B2 challenge is often the correct shape of the complete noun phrase.

Examples

mit einer besseren Strategie
für einen größeren Markt
trotz höherer Kosten
aufgrund der wichtigsten Ergebnisse
zwischen den größten Städten

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

13.12. Multiple adjectives

Several attributive adjectives normally take matching parallel endings. Only the adjective whose meaning is being compared needs to be comparative or superlative.

Examples

ein größerer internationaler Markt
eine bessere langfristige Lösung
die wichtigsten politischen Entscheidungen
mit höheren zusätzlichen Kosten

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

14.13. Order of multiple adjectives

German has no absolutely rigid adjective order. A more classifying property often stands closer to the noun, while evaluative or comparative information appears further left. Information structure can alter the order.

Examples

eine bessere langfristige Strategie
ein größerer europäischer Markt
die wichtigsten wirtschaftlichen Faktoren

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

15.14. Comparative + als

An attributive comparative can be completed by an als phrase. This phrase typically follows the noun or the complete noun phrase.

Examples

ein größerer Markt als der deutsche
eine günstigere Lösung als die bisherige
höhere Kosten als im Vorjahr
eine stärkere Nachfrage als erwartet

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

16.15. Equality with wie

Equality normally uses the positive degree with wie. In neutral standard German, the core contrast is comparative + als versus equality + wie.

Examples

ein ebenso großes Problem wie zuvor
eine genauso wichtige Frage wie die erste
größer als zuvor
so groß wie zuvor

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

17.16. Superlative and comparison set

A superlative semantically presupposes a comparison set. It can be given by a genitive, a prepositional phrase, or context. In analytical writing, the comparison domain should be clear.

Examples

die größte Stadt des Landes
der wichtigste Faktor im Modell
die beste Lösung für kleine Unternehmen
die größte der untersuchten Städte

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

18.17. einer der wichtigsten ...

A very common pattern is einer/eine/eines + der + superlative + plural noun. After der, the phrase is genitive plural even though the complete construction refers to one member of the set.

Examples

einer der wichtigsten Faktoren
eine der größten Herausforderungen
eines der ältesten Gebäude
einer der besten Vorschläge

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

19.18. die three most important ...

Numerals can stand between the determiner and the superlative. The superlative remains attributive and takes its normal ending.

Examples

die drei wichtigsten Gründe
die zwei größten Städte
die fünf häufigsten Fehler

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

20.19. Ranking: zweitgrößte, drittwichtigste

Ranking expressions often use compounds with zweit-, dritt-, viert-, etc. The whole form is declined like an attributive adjective.

Examples

der zweitgrößte Markt
die drittwichtigste Ursache
das viertstärkste Team
mit dem zweitgrößten Markt

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

21.20. nächstgrößer and nächsthöher

In technical and analytical contexts, nächstgrößer, nächstkleiner, and nächsthöher refer to the next position on a scale rather than the absolute superlative.

Examples

die nächstgrößere Kategorie
der nächstkleinere Wert
das nächsthöhere Niveau

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

22.21. Intensifying the comparative

Degree expressions such as deutlich, wesentlich, erheblich, etwas, and viel can modify a comparative. They remain unchanged; the comparative adjective is declined.

Examples

ein deutlich größerer Markt
eine wesentlich bessere Lösung
ein erheblich höheres Risiko
eine etwas günstigere Variante
mit viel höheren Kosten

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

23.22. Intensifying the superlative

Superlatives can be intensified by mit Abstand, weitaus, eindeutig, and similar expressions. These are common in analytical writing but should be semantically justified.

Examples

der mit Abstand größte Markt
die weitaus wichtigste Ursache
das eindeutig beste Ergebnis
eine der mit Abstand schwierigsten Aufgaben

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

24.23. möglichst and optimal degree

möglichst is not a superlative marker in the strict sense, but it frequently creates noun phrases meaning “as ... as possible.” The following adjective is declined normally.

Examples

eine möglichst einfache Lösung
ein möglichst niedriger Preis
mit möglichst geringem Aufwand

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

25.24. bestmöglich, größtmöglich, höchstmöglich

Forms with -möglich are common in formal language and are declined like ordinary attributive adjectives.

Examples

die bestmögliche Lösung
größtmögliche Transparenz
mit höchstmöglicher Sicherheit

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

26.25. Irregular comparison forms

Several common comparison paradigms need to be lexicalised. Attributive declension is added after the irregular comparison form has been built.

Examples

gut → besser → best-
viel → mehr → meist-
hoch → höher → höchst-
nah → näher → nächst-
groß → größer → größt-

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

27.26. mehr before nouns

mehr is normally not declined like an adjective before a noun. If an adjective follows, that adjective carries the case ending.

Examples

mehr Zeit
mehr Geld
mehr Probleme
mehr praktische Erfahrung
mit mehr praktischer Erfahrung

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

28.27. weniger before nouns

weniger can directly reduce a quantity. This differs syntactically from a declined comparative such as geringere, kleinere, or niedrigere.

Examples

weniger Zeit
weniger Kosten
mit weniger Aufwand
geringere Kosten
kleinerer Aufwand
niedrigere Preise

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

29.28. Stem changes: teuer, dunkel, edel

Some adjectives shorten or change their stem in the comparative. The normal attributive ending is then added.

Examples

dunkel → dunkler → ein dunklerer Raum
teuer → teurer → eine teurere Wohnung
edel → edler → ein edleres Material

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

30.29. Umlaut in the comparative

Many short adjectives take umlaut in the comparative, but not every adjective with a/o/u does so automatically. The specific paradigm is lexical knowledge.

Examples

alt → älter → ein älteres Gebäude
groß → größer → eine größere Stadt
jung → jünger → mit jüngeren Teilnehmern
kurz → kürzer → der kürzere Weg
warm → wärmer → wärmere Luft

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

31.30. -est- in the superlative

Certain phonological shapes use -est- in the superlative. The declensional ending is then added in attributive use.

Examples

breit → der breiteste Abschnitt
heiß → die heißeste Phase
kurz → der kürzeste Weg

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

32.31. Participles and comparison

Participles can be attributive and combine with degree expressions. Distinguish an adverb modifying the degree of a participle from a lexicalised combined form.

Examples

die stärker betroffene Region
das am stärksten betroffene Gebiet
eine besser vorbereitete Gruppe
die bestvorbereitete Mannschaft

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

33.32. Expanded attributes

A whole phrase can precede a noun. Only the attributive head adjective or participle carries the declensional ending; its modifiers remain unchanged.

Examples

die deutlich besser vorbereitete Gruppe
der wesentlich schneller wachsende Markt
das am stärksten von der Krise betroffene Unternehmen

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

34.33. Comparatives in formal prose

Attributive comparatives compress trends and differences into noun phrases. This is typical of chart descriptions, reports, and argumentative writing.

Examples

höhere Nachfrage
geringere Emissionen
stärkere Regulierung
größere Transparenz
schnelleres Wachstum

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

35.34. Superlatives in argumentation

Superlatives mark priorities and strong evaluations. In analytical writing, a real comparison set or clear standard should be identifiable.

Examples

das wichtigste Argument
die größte Herausforderung
der stärkste Einwand
die langfristig günstigste Lösung

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

36.35. Absolute and lexicalised superlative

Some superlative forms are fixed or semi-fixed expressions and do not always compare a literal set. They are best learned as lexical patterns.

Examples

höchste Zeit
größte Sorgfalt
beste Grüße
in kürzester Zeit

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

37.36. Nominalised comparison forms

Comparative and superlative adjectives can be nominalised. Capitalisation and the declension rules for nominalised adjectives then apply.

Examples

der Größere
die Ältere
das Wichtigste
die Besten
mit dem Älteren
einer der Besten

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

38.37. etwas Besseres, nichts Wichtigeres

Nominalised adjectives often follow etwas, nichts, viel, and wenig. Neuter -es is especially common.

Examples

etwas Besseres
nichts Wichtigeres
wenig Neues
viel Interessantes

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

39.38. Possessive noun phrases

Possessive determiners basically behave like ein. Comparison forms can also occur in long possessive noun phrases.

Examples

mein älterer Bruder
meine wichtigste Aufgabe
unser größtes Problem
mit ihrer besseren Lösung
unsere langfristig günstigste Alternative

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

40.39. Plural without an article

Articleless plurals take strong endings. After prepositions, the endings change according to the required case.

Examples

höhere Preise
bessere Bedingungen
größere Unternehmen
mit höheren Preisen
unter besseren Bedingungen
bei größeren Unternehmen

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

41.40. Compressing propositions into noun phrases

Attributive comparison can compress full propositions into noun phrases. This is useful for formal B2 style, but it should not produce unreadably long noun phrases.

Examples

Die Preise sind höher. → höhere Preise
Die Lösung ist besser. → eine bessere Lösung
Diese Faktoren sind am wichtigsten. → die wichtigsten Faktoren

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

42.41. Complex pre-nominal structure

A long attribute block can develop before the noun. Analyse it by separating determiner, modifier, comparative stem, ending, and noun.

Examples

die für kleine Unternehmen deutlich günstigere Lösung
ein für den Export wesentlich interessanterer Markt
das langfristig wichtigste politische Ziel

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

43.42. Post-nominal complements

Complexity can also appear to the right of the noun. The adjective ending is still determined by the internal noun phrase, not by the post-nominal prepositional or genitive phrase.

Examples

die bessere Lösung für kleine Unternehmen
der wichtigste Faktor für den langfristigen Erfolg
eine günstigere Alternative zur bisherigen Methode

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

44.43. Relative clause after the noun phrase

A relative clause can extend an already complex comparison noun phrase without changing its internal declension.

Examples

die günstigste Lösung, die derzeit verfügbar ist
ein größerer Markt, der schneller wächst
eine der wichtigsten Fragen, die noch offen sind

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

45.44. Comparison in long noun phrases

At B2, degree modifier, multiple adjectives, noun, and an als phrase can occur together. The structure remains manageable if analysed in layers.

Examples

eine deutlich bessere langfristige Lösung als die bisher vorgeschlagene
ein wesentlich größerer internationaler Markt als vor zehn Jahren

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

46.45. Control complexity stylistically

Grammatically possible noun phrases can become too heavy. B2 means controlled complexity: if the reader must retain too much material before the noun, a clause is often clearer.

Examples

die unter den aktuellen wirtschaftlichen Bedingungen deutlich kostengünstigere langfristige Lösung
Unter den aktuellen wirtschaftlichen Bedingungen ist diese langfristige Lösung deutlich kostengünstiger.

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

47.46. Describing charts and data

Attributive comparatives are especially productive in data description. They package trends into compact noun phrases and combine easily with figures and time expressions.

Examples

ein stärkerer Anstieg
eine geringere Nachfrage
höhere Werte
die höchste Quote
der deutlichste Rückgang

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

48.47. Argumentation and evaluation

In discussion and opinion writing, comparison forms help weigh alternatives. They therefore contribute to the logical and evaluative structure of a text.

Examples

das stärkere Argument
die überzeugendere Begründung
eine realistischere Alternative
die langfristig sinnvollste Lösung

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

49.48. Formal nominal style

Formal texts often use a preposition followed by a comparative or superlative noun phrase. This expresses conditions, purposes, and circumstances compactly.

Examples

zur besseren Vergleichbarkeit
bei höherer Belastung
unter strengeren Bedingungen
mit größtmöglicher Transparenz

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

50.49. immer + comparative

immer + comparative marks a continuing development. The comparative remains attributive and is declined for case.

Examples

immer höhere Preise
immer größere Probleme
mit immer höheren Preisen
wegen immer strengerer Regeln

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

51.50. noch + comparative

noch can intensify an existing comparison further. noch remains unchanged; the adjective carries the declension.

Examples

eine noch bessere Lösung
ein noch größerer Markt
mit noch höheren Kosten

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

52.51. immer higher vs still high

immer höhere Preise describes continuing increases, while immer noch hohe Preise means prices remain high. Particle structure and comparison interact.

Examples

immer höhere Preise
immer noch hohe Preise

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

53.52. mehr vs größer

mehr often indicates a larger quantity or number; größer describes the size of the individual referent. These meanings must be kept distinct.

Examples

mehr Kunden ≠ größere Kunden
mehr Unternehmen ≠ größere Unternehmen
mehr Wohnungen ≠ größere Wohnungen

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

54.53. Typical collocations

With measurable quantities, natural lexical choice matters: German says höhere Preise but mehr Geld. B2 competence therefore includes common noun-adjective collocations.

Examples

höhere Preise
höhere Temperaturen
höhere Werte
mehr Geld
mehr Zeit
stärkere Nachfrage

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

55.54. Lexical limits on comparison

Not every adjective is naturally gradable in every meaning. Classifying or absolute adjectives can allow comparison only when context creates a gradual interpretation.

Examples

digital → digitaler [nur bei gradueller Interpretation]
medizinisch → medizinischer [kontextabhängig]
einzig → normalerweise nicht regulär steigerbar

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

56.55. Superlative and definiteness

Superlatives often occur with a definite article because they single out an element in a set. Possessives, articleless fixed phrases, and eine/einer der ... structures are also possible.

Examples

der beste Vorschlag
unsere beste Lösung
höchste Priorität
eine der besten Lösungen

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

57.56. Ellipsis in comparisons

If the noun is clear from context, it can be omitted. The declined adjective then takes on a nominal function.

Examples

die größere von zwei Wohnungen
der günstigere der beiden Tarife
die schnellste der drei Verbindungen

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

58.57. Parallelism in lists

Parallel noun-phrase structure improves coherence in lists. Comparison forms are particularly useful for this.

Examples

niedrigere Kosten, kürzere Lieferzeiten und bessere Qualität
höhere Effizienz, geringerer Verbrauch und bessere Planbarkeit

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

59.58. Determiner choice and meaning

Determiner and comparison form jointly shape meaning: eine bessere Lösung introduces an unspecified better option; die bessere Lösung selects among known alternatives; unsere beste Lösung marks top rank within a set.

Examples

eine bessere Lösung
die bessere Lösung
unsere beste Lösung

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

60.59. Comparison standard from context

A comparative does not always need an explicit als phrase. The standard can be known from discourse. Good writing makes it explicit when ambiguity would otherwise arise.

Examples

Wir brauchen eine bessere Lösung.
Die Firma sucht größere Räume.
Höhere Preise wären problematisch.

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

61.60. System summary

Four questions control every attributive comparison form: which degree, which determiner, which case/gender/number, and how is the rest of the noun phrase structured? Keeping these layers separate makes even long B2 phrases manageable.

Examples

eines deutlich größeren europäischen Marktes
mit der langfristig günstigsten Alternative
einer der wichtigsten wirtschaftlichen Faktoren

Form analysis: The lexical comparison base remains the same; the determiner and ending show how it is embedded grammatically in the noun phrase.

65.Mental decision model

1. Is comparison intended?
   ↓
2. Form comparative or superlative
   ↓
3. Is the form attributive before a noun?
   ↓
4. Identify the determiner
   ↓
5. Identify case + gender + number
   ↓
6. add the correct adjective ending
   ↓
7. arrange complements such as als / genitive / prepositional phrase

Example:

groß
→ größer
→ ein größer...
→ nominative masculine after ein
→ ein größerer Markt
→ ein deutlich größerer Markt als bisher

66.Summary

Attributive comparatives and superlatives fully participate in adjective declension.

groß → größer → größere / größeren / größerer / größeres ...
groß → größt- → größte / größten / größter / größtes ...

Core contrasts:

Das Haus ist größer.
→ predicative

ein größeres Haus
→ attributive

Dieses Haus ist am größten.
→ predicative

das größte Haus
→ attributive

Complex B2 noun phrases:

ein deutlich größerer europäischer Markt
eine wesentlich bessere langfristige Lösung
einer der wichtigsten wirtschaftlichen Faktoren
die drei größten deutschen Städte
mit der langfristig günstigsten Alternative
aufgrund höherer zusätzlicher Kosten

The safest mental rule is: First form the degree of comparison, then decline the entire noun phrase.
