Contrast: während, dagegen, hingegen, jedoch

Learn and practise: Contrast: während, dagegen, hingegen, jedoch.

1.What this page explains

At B2, aber is often no longer enough.

You need more precise tools for:

direct contrast
factual comparison
contrasting properties
unexpected qualification
opposing positions

The four core items on this page are:

während
dagegen
hingegen
jedoch

They do not mean exactly the same thing and they behave differently syntactically.

2.The core map

A first orientation:

während
→ subordinate clause
→ directly compare two states or facts

dagegen
→ adverb
→ contrast with a previous statement

hingegen
→ adverb
→ more formal, marked contrast

jedoch
→ adverb / connector
→ qualification or counterpoint

Remember:

Not only meaning, but syntax + register + discourse function decide.

3.aber as the starting point

B1:

Die Wohnung ist klein, aber günstig.

This is correct and useful.

At B2, ask additional questions:

Is it a direct contrast?
Is it a comparison of two sides?
Is the register more formal?
Should the contrast be highlighted strongly?

Then während, dagegen, hingegen, or jedoch may be more precise.

4.während: not only time

während has two important functions:

temporal:
Während ich arbeitete, hörte ich Musik.

contrastive:
Während Anna gern plant, entscheidet Paul spontan.

This page focuses mainly on the contrastive meaning.

5.Contrastive während

Contrastive während directly sets two situations against each other:

Während das erste Modell sehr günstig ist, bietet das zweite mehr Funktionen.

Structure:

während + subordinate clause
→ verb at the end

The contrast is built into the sentence structure.

6.während in clause structure

Example:

Während die Nachfrage steigt, sinkt das Angebot.

Order:

subordinate clause first
→ comma
→ main clause with verb in first position

Why?

The whole subordinate clause occupies position 1 of the main clause.

7.während after the main clause

Also possible:

Das erste Modell ist sehr günstig, während das zweite mehr Funktionen bietet.

This order often feels natural when one side is introduced first and then contrasted with the second.

8.während for symmetrical comparison

Especially typical:

Während Gruppe A zunahm, blieb Gruppe B stabil.
Während manche Menschen gern im Büro arbeiten, bevorzugen andere Homeoffice.

Both sides carry similar weight.

That makes während useful for structured comparison.

9.während in data description

Very useful:

Während der Anteil der Jüngeren stieg, ging der Anteil der Älteren zurück.

This is more compact than:

Der Anteil der Jüngeren stieg. Der Anteil der Älteren ging dagegen zurück.

Both are possible, but the text architecture differs.

10.Temporal or contrastive?

Compare:

Während ich kochte, telefonierte sie.

This can be temporal:

at the same time

But:

Während ich gern koche, bestellt sie lieber Essen.

is clearly contrastive:

different habits

Context decides.

11.dagegen: the contrasting pole

dagegen presents one statement as a contrast to preceding information:

Das erste Angebot ist günstig.
Das zweite ist dagegen flexibler.

Typical logic:

A
→ statement about A

B
→ dagegen
→ contrasting statement about B

12.dagegen is an adverb

dagegen can occupy different positions in a main clause.

Position 1:

Dagegen ist das zweite Modell deutlich günstiger.

Middle field:

Das zweite Modell ist dagegen deutlich günstiger.

The verb-second rule remains in force.

13.dagegen in position 1

Die erste Lösung ist schnell. Dagegen ist die zweite deutlich sicherer.

Structure:

Dagegen | ist | die zweite ...
1 | 2

Not:

*Dagegen die zweite ist ...

14.dagegen in the middle field

Often very natural:

Die erste Lösung ist schnell.
Die zweite ist dagegen deutlich sicherer.

Here the comparison item die zweite comes first, and dagegen then marks the contrast.

15.dagegen usually needs a clear reference

Without a previous basis for contrast:

Dagegen ist das Produkt teuer.

often feels incomplete.

The reader asks:

In contrast to what?

That is why dagegen is strongly cohesive: it links back to prior text.

16.dagegen vs dagegen sein

Note that dagegen also has another meaning:

Ich bin dagegen.

= I am against this proposal.

This page focuses mainly on the contrast function:

A ist teuer, B dagegen günstig.

Keep the two meanings separate.

17.hingegen: marked contrast

hingegen is similar to dagegen, but often sounds:

more formal
more written
more strongly contrastive

Example:

Die erste Gruppe zeigte kaum Veränderungen.
Die zweite hingegen verbesserte sich deutlich.

18.hingegen in the middle field

Very typical:

Die erste Gruppe blieb stabil.
Die zweite zeigte hingegen deutliche Veränderungen.

Or:

Die zweite hingegen zeigte deutliche Veränderungen.

Both are possible, but the information focus differs slightly.

19.hingegen directly after the subject

Pattern:

A ..., B hingegen ...

Example:

Die Stadt wächst, das Umland hingegen verliert Einwohner.

This construction is compact and typical of analytical writing.

20.hingegen vs dagegen

Both can mark an opposing pole:

Das Zentrum wächst.
Das Umland dagegen schrumpft.

Das Zentrum wächst.
Das Umland hingegen schrumpft.

Tendency:

dagegen
→ more neutral, more general-purpose

hingegen
→ more formal, more written

The meaning difference is often small; the register difference matters more.

21.jedoch: contrast with qualification

jedoch is very common when a previous statement is qualified, corrected, or limited:

Die Lösung ist günstig, jedoch nicht besonders flexibel.

Or:

Die Ergebnisse sind interessant. Sie sind jedoch noch nicht eindeutig.

Functionally, jedoch is often close to aber, but sounds more formal.

22.jedoch is not a subordinate-clause conjunction

Not:

*jedoch die Ergebnisse nicht eindeutig sind

jedoch does not trigger verb-final order.

Correct:

Die Ergebnisse sind jedoch nicht eindeutig.
Jedoch sind die Ergebnisse nicht eindeutig.

23.jedoch in position 1

Jedoch ist die Umsetzung komplizierter als erwartet.

Structure:

Jedoch | ist | die Umsetzung ...
1 | 2

This position often sounds written and clearly marks the contrast.

24.jedoch in the middle field

Very common:

Die Umsetzung ist jedoch komplizierter als erwartet.

This often sounds more natural than starting the sentence with Jedoch.

It is especially typical in factual prose.

25.aber vs jedoch

Compare:

Die Idee ist gut, aber teuer.
Die Idee ist gut, jedoch teuer.

Tendency:

aber
→ neutral, very common, spoken and written

jedoch
→ more formal, more written, often more factual

Meaning is similar; register differs.

26.jedoch vs dennoch

Both can follow a previous statement, but the logic differs.

Die Lösung ist teuer, jedoch sehr zuverlässig.

→ simple contrast / qualification.

Die Lösung ist teuer. Dennoch wird sie häufig eingesetzt.

→ unexpected result despite an obstacle.

dennoch belongs more strongly to concession, not neutral contrast.

27.dagegen vs jedoch

Compare:

Das erste Modell ist günstig.
Das zweite ist dagegen schneller.

→ two different objects are contrasted.

Das erste Modell ist günstig, jedoch langsam.

→ two properties of the same object are contrasted.

This is an important functional difference.

28.hingegen vs jedoch

Typical difference:

A ist billig, B hingegen teuer.

→ A versus B.

A ist billig, jedoch unzuverlässig.

→ two properties of A.

Other contexts are possible, but this basic logic is useful.

29.während vs dagegen

Both can compare two sides:

Während A steigt, sinkt B.

→ one complex sentence, symmetrical contrast.

A steigt. B sinkt dagegen.

→ two main clauses, linked by an adverb.

So the choice also depends on the desired text structure.

30.während vs hingegen

Compare:

Während die Stadt wächst, schrumpft das Umland.

compact within one complex sentence.

Die Stadt wächst. Das Umland hingegen schrumpft.

more segmented and more written in style.

Both work well for analytical contrast.

31.Contrast between two people

Anna arbeitet gern früh, während Paul lieber spät anfängt.

Or:

Anna arbeitet gern früh. Paul dagegen fängt lieber spät an.

Or more formally:

Anna arbeitet gern früh. Paul hingegen beginnt lieber später.

32.Contrast between two groups

Typical in statistics and argumentation:

Während jüngere Befragte flexible Arbeitszeiten bevorzugen, legen ältere Befragte mehr Wert auf Planungssicherheit.

Or:

Jüngere Befragte bevorzugen flexible Arbeitszeiten. Ältere Befragte legen hingegen mehr Wert auf Planungssicherheit.

33.Contrast within one object

When two properties of the same thing contrast:

Das Gerät ist leistungsstark, jedoch relativ schwer.

dagegen or hingegen are less typical here because no second comparison object is introduced.

34.Contrast between positions

Example:

Befürworter betonen die Flexibilität.
Kritiker hingegen verweisen auf die höheren Kosten.

This structure is very useful for balanced argumentation.

35.Contrast in discussion essays

Useful patterns:

Während Befürworter argumentieren, dass ..., weisen Kritiker darauf hin, dass ...

Einige sehen darin einen Vorteil. Andere hingegen betrachten dies als Risiko.

Die Maßnahme ist kurzfristig teuer, langfristig jedoch sinnvoll.

This creates nuanced argumentation.

36.short-term ... long-term however ...

A very typical B2 pattern:

Kurzfristig entstehen zusätzliche Kosten, langfristig kann die Maßnahme jedoch Einsparungen bringen.

The contrast is between:

short-term perspective
vs
long-term perspective

37.einerseits ... andererseits as a frame

For more complex argumentation:

Einerseits bietet Homeoffice mehr Flexibilität, andererseits kann die Zusammenarbeit schwieriger werden.

This is broader than jedoch.

It explicitly structures two sides.

Within the paragraphs, hingegen or dagegen can then mark further contrasts.

38.zwar ... aber and jedoch

Typical:

Die Lösung ist zwar teuer, aber zuverlässig.

More formal:

Die Lösung ist zwar teuer, jedoch zuverlässig.

zwar signals:

the first statement will soon be qualified or contrasted

39.sondern is a different type of contrast

sondern corrects after negation:

not A, but B

Example:

Das Problem ist nicht die Technik, sondern die Organisation.

This is not a neutral comparison like dagegen or hingegen, but a correction.

40.Strength of contrast

Very rough tendency:

aber
→ neutral contrast

jedoch
→ marked qualification / more formal contrast

dagegen
→ clear opposing pole

hingegen
→ especially marked, often formal opposing pole

während
→ structurally symmetrical comparison

The boundaries are not absolute.

41.Register map

ConnectorConversationNeutral writingFormal writing
abervery commonvery commonpossible
währendcommonvery commonvery common
dagegencommonvery commoncommon
hingegenless commoncommonvery common
jedochless commonvery commonvery common

This is a tendency, not a rigid rule.

42.Contrast and information structure

Contrast becomes stronger when parallel structures are used:

A ist schnell, B hingegen langsam.
A bevorzugt Planung, B dagegen Flexibilität.
Während A zunimmt, nimmt B ab.

Parallel structure helps the reader recognise the opposition immediately.

43.Parallelism in lists

Stronger:

Das erste Modell ist günstig, aber langsam.
Das zweite ist teuer, jedoch schnell.

Even clearer with real symmetry:

Das erste Modell ist günstig, das zweite hingegen schnell.

Make sure the contrasted categories are genuinely comparable.

44.Common mistake 1: V2 after während

Wrong:

*Während die Preise steigen, die Nachfrage sinkt.

Correct:

Während die Preise steigen, sinkt die Nachfrage.

In the während clause:

verb at the end

In the following main clause:

finite verb immediately after the subordinate clause

45.Common mistake 2: treating dagegen like a conjunction

Wrong:

*Dagegen das zweite Modell ist günstiger.

Correct:

Dagegen ist das zweite Modell günstiger.

Or:

Das zweite Modell ist dagegen günstiger.

dagegen follows normal V2 word order.

46.Common mistake 3: hingegen without a comparison base

Unclear:

Hingegen ist das Verfahren teuer.

if no opposing point has been mentioned before.

Better:

Das erste Verfahren ist günstig. Das zweite hingegen ist teuer.

hingegen normally needs a recognizable contrast base.

47.Common mistake 4: verb-final after jedoch

Wrong:

*Jedoch die Lösung teuer ist.

Correct:

Jedoch ist die Lösung teuer.

Or:

Die Lösung ist jedoch teuer.

jedoch is not a subordinating connector.

48.Common mistake 5: dennoch instead of dagegen

Compare:

A ist teuer. B ist dagegen günstig.

→ comparison A vs B.

A ist teuer. Dennoch wird A oft gekauft.

→ unexpected result despite the high price.

If no concession is intended, dennoch often does not fit.

49.Common mistake 6: contrast without a real comparison axis

Weak:

A ist günstig, B hingegen blau.

Formally possible, but logically poorly matched.

Better:

A ist günstig, B hingegen teuer.

A contrast needs a coherent comparison axis.

50.Common mistake 7: starting every sentence with jedoch

Too monotonous:

Jedoch ...
Jedoch ...
Jedoch ...

B2 texts need variation:

jedoch
dagegen
hingegen
während
zwar ... aber
einerseits ... andererseits

But only when the logical relation actually fits.

51.Common mistake 8: mechanically swapping synonyms

Do not think:

aber = jedoch = dagegen = hingegen = während

Instead:

aber
→ neutral coordination

jedoch
→ qualification / formal contrast

dagegen / hingegen
→ opposing pole

während
→ subordinating comparison

This is the key functional distinction.

52.Contrast in descriptions

In descriptions, contrastive devices help organise properties precisely:

Das Stadtzentrum ist dicht bebaut, während die Außenbezirke deutlich grüner sind.

Die Innenstadt ist teuer. Am Stadtrand sind die Mieten dagegen niedriger.

This creates a structured comparison instead of a simple list.

53.Contrast in summaries

When summarising, two positions can be contrasted concisely:

Der erste Autor betont die wirtschaftlichen Vorteile.
Die zweite Autorin hingegen konzentriert sich auf die sozialen Folgen.

Or:

Während der erste Text optimistisch argumentiert, ist der zweite deutlich kritischer.

54.Contrast in presentations

Useful presentation phrases:

Im Gegensatz dazu ...
Dagegen zeigt die zweite Grafik ...
Die zweite Gruppe hingegen ...
Während der erste Wert steigt, ...
Jedoch muss berücksichtigt werden, dass ...

These make differences visible and organise the presentation.

55.im Gegensatz dazu

A very explicit contrast marker:

Im Gegensatz dazu ist die zweite Lösung deutlich günstiger.

Structure:

Im Gegensatz dazu | ist | ...

This phrase is more explicit than dagegen and especially useful in formal writing.

56.im Unterschied dazu

Also useful:

Im Unterschied dazu arbeitet die zweite Gruppe vollständig digital.

im Unterschied dazu sounds analytical and works well in:

comparisons
reports
presentations
summaries

57.anders als

For direct comparison:

Anders als das erste Modell ist das zweite modular aufgebaut.

Or:

Das zweite Modell ist anders als das erste modular aufgebaut.

The first version is usually clearer.

anders als directly compares two referents.

58.im Vergleich dazu

Im Vergleich dazu ist die zweite Variante deutlich flexibler.

This phrase signals comparison, not necessarily strong opposition.

So it can be more neutral than:

hingegen
dagegen

59.Contrast and focus

Position changes focus.

Compare:

Die zweite Gruppe hingegen blieb stabil.

Strong focus on:

die zweite Gruppe

But:

Die zweite Gruppe blieb hingegen stabil.

More focus on the statement:

blieb stabil

Both are correct.

60.Contrast and topic-comment structure

In analytical writing, the comparison item often comes first:

Die erste Gruppe nahm zu.
Die zweite Gruppe hingegen blieb stabil.

This creates:

topic: first group / second group
comment: increased / remained stable

The parallelism improves readability.

61.Contrast at sentence and text level

Sentence level:

A ist günstig, jedoch langsam.

Text level:

A ist günstig und einfach zu bedienen.
B hingegen bietet mehr Funktionen und lässt sich besser anpassen.

At B2, contrast should remain coherent across several sentences.

62.Not every difference is a contrast

Compare:

A kostet 20 Euro.
B kostet 25 Euro.

This is initially just a difference.

A stronger contrast appears in:

A ist deutlich günstiger, B hingegen bietet mehr Funktionen.

At B2, connectors should be used only where a real logical relation exists.

63.Separate contrast from evaluation

A ist kleiner, B dagegen größer.

describes a difference neutrally.

A ist besser, B dagegen schlechter.

already contains evaluation.

Be aware whether your text:

describes
or
evaluates

64.Separate contrast from concession

Contrast:

A ist teuer, B dagegen günstig.

Concession:

A ist teuer. Trotzdem wird es häufig gekauft.

Ask:

Am I comparing two sides?
or
does something happen despite an obstacle?

This diagnosis helps choose the connector.

65.Separate contrast from correction

Contrast:

A ist schnell, B hingegen sicherer.

Correction:

Nicht A, sondern B ist verantwortlich.

sondern corrects a negated alternative.

hingegen contrasts two valid sides.

66.Do not mix contrast and cause

Do not think:

hingegen = deshalb

No.

hingegen
→ contrast

deshalb
→ consequence

Example:

A ist teuer, B hingegen günstig.

A ist teuer. Deshalb kaufen viele Menschen B.

67.Contrast in formal emails

Useful factual patterns:

Die Lieferung erfolgte pünktlich. Die Ware war jedoch beschädigt.

Die erste Rechnung war korrekt, die zweite hingegen enthielt mehrere Fehler.

This clearly separates positive and negative aspects.

68.Contrast in reports

Typical:

Während die Verkaufszahlen im Inland stiegen, gingen sie im Ausland leicht zurück.

Die Personalkosten blieben stabil. Die Energiekosten hingegen nahmen deutlich zu.

These forms work well for factual presentation of data.

69.Contrast in academic-style prose

Typical patterns:

Während frühere Studien vor allem X untersuchten, konzentriert sich die aktuelle Analyse auf Y.

Die erste Erklärung erscheint plausibel; die zweite hingegen lässt mehrere Fragen offen.

Die Ergebnisse sind insgesamt stabil, jedoch nicht in allen Teilgruppen.

70.Semicolon with hingegen / jedoch

In more advanced writing, a semicolon can separate two closely connected main clauses:

Die erste Lösung ist günstig; die zweite hingegen bietet mehr Sicherheit.

Or:

Die Ergebnisse sind vielversprechend; sie sind jedoch noch vorläufig.

The semicolon is optional, but it can make text structure clearer.

71.Commas with während

Because während introduces a subordinate clause, a comma is required:

Während A steigt, sinkt B.
B sinkt, während A steigt.

The subordinate clause can come first or second.

Verb-final order remains the same.

72.Commas with jedoch

jedoch itself does not automatically require a comma.

Compare:

Die Lösung ist jedoch teuer.

no comma.

But:

Die Lösung ist günstig, jedoch langsam.

Here the comma separates coordinated parts.

Punctuation depends on the overall structure.

73.Vary connector position deliberately

Compare:

Dagegen ist B deutlich günstiger.
B ist dagegen deutlich günstiger.

Hingegen ist B deutlich günstiger.
B hingegen ist deutlich günstiger.
B ist hingegen deutlich günstiger.

Jedoch ist B teurer.
B ist jedoch teurer.

Not every position sounds equally natural, but variation allows deliberate information structure.

74.Decision path: comparing two objects

When contrasting two objects or groups:

1. One complex sentence?
   → während

2. Second sentence as the opposing pole?
   → dagegen

3. More formal / strongly marked opposing pole?
   → hingegen

Example:

A wächst, während B schrumpft.
A wächst. B dagegen schrumpft.
A wächst. B hingegen schrumpft.

75.Decision path: qualifying one statement

When qualifying the same thing:

Die Idee ist gut, ...

Ask:

Does a contrasting property of the same thing follow?

Then often use:

jedoch
aber
zwar ... aber / jedoch

Example:

Die Idee ist gut, jedoch schwer umzusetzen.

76.Decision path: check for concession

Before choosing jedoch or dagegen, ask:

Is this really just contrast?

If the logic is:

although A, B still happens

you probably need:

obwohl
trotzdem
dennoch
trotz

77.Quick reference: syntax

während
→ subordinate clause
→ verb at the end

dagegen
→ main-clause adverb
→ V2

hingegen
→ main-clause adverb
→ V2

jedoch
→ main-clause adverb / coordinating connector
→ no verb-final order

This is the key syntax overview.

78.Quick reference: function

während
→ directly compare A and B

dagegen
→ present B as the opposite pole to A

hingegen
→ present B as a more formally marked opposite pole to A

jedoch
→ qualify a statement / add a contrasting property

79.Quick reference: typical patterns

Während A steigt, sinkt B.

A steigt. B sinkt dagegen.

A steigt. B hingegen sinkt.

A ist günstig, jedoch langsam.

A ist zwar teuer, jedoch zuverlässig.

Im Gegensatz dazu ist B flexibler.

80.Connection to concessive connectors

The neighbouring concession-expanded section covers:

obwohl
auch wenn
dennoch
trotz

The key boundary:

contrast
→ two different sides

concession
→ an expectation is not fulfilled despite an obstacle

This distinction is crucial at B2.

81.Connection to two-part connectors

For larger argumentative structures, important patterns include:

einerseits ... andererseits
zwar ... aber
nicht nur ... sondern auch

hingegen, dagegen, and jedoch can complement these structures, but do not always replace them.

82.Connection to data description

Especially useful for charts and statistics:

während
dagegen
hingegen
im Vergleich dazu
im Gegensatz dazu

Typical pattern:

Während Wert A kontinuierlich zunimmt, bleibt Wert B weitgehend stabil.

83.What should be active at B2

You should be able to distinguish spontaneously:

während
→ subordinate clause + symmetrical comparison

dagegen
→ neutral opposing pole

hingegen
→ more formal opposing pole

jedoch
→ qualification / contrasting property

And you should recognise:

contrast ≠ concession ≠ correction ≠ consequence

84.The core formula

Remember:

two sides in one complex sentence
→ während

second referent as opposing pole
→ dagegen / hingegen

qualify one statement or property
→ jedoch

Then check:

register
syntax
comparison axis
discourse function

85.Summary

The key B2 patterns:

Während A steigt, sinkt B.

A ist günstig. B ist dagegen flexibler.

Die erste Gruppe blieb stabil.
Die zweite hingegen verbesserte sich deutlich.

Die Lösung ist interessant, jedoch teuer.

Kurzfristig entstehen Kosten,
langfristig kann die Maßnahme jedoch Vorteile bringen.

The key idea:

Advanced contrast does not mean using as many synonyms for aber as possible.
What matters is what kind of contrast exists, how the sentence is built, and which register fits the text.
