1.What this page explains
Paired conjunctions connect two parallel pieces of information and at the same time show the logical relation between them.
The main B1 patterns on this page are:
sowohl ... als auch
entweder ... oder
weder ... noch
nicht nur ... sondern auch
zwar ... aber
einerseits ... andererseits
You will also meet:
je ... desto / umso
mal ... mal
teils ... teils
bald ... bald
Core idea:
The two parts belong together.
Form and meaning work as a pair.
2.Why paired conjunctions matter
Simple connectors include:
and
or
but
Paired connectors make the relation more precise:
sowohl A als auch B
→ A and B
entweder A oder B
→ one of two alternatives
nicht nur A, sondern auch B
→ B is added and is often the stronger or surprising point
At B1, you increasingly express these logical distinctions deliberately.
3.Parallel structure is the core principle
The two parts should be as grammatically parallel as possible.
Good:
sowohl in Berlin als auch in Hamburg
sowohl lesen als auch schreiben
sowohl freundlich als auch kompetent
Less good:
*sowohl in Berlin als auch Hamburg besuchen
The structures on both sides should match.
4.sowohl ... als auch: meaning
sowohl A als auch B
means:
A and B
with special emphasis that both are true.
Example:
Sie spricht sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.
5.sowohl ... als auch with nouns
Wir brauchen sowohl Zeit als auch Geld.
Sie kennt sowohl den Chef als auch die Assistentin.
Das betrifft sowohl Kunden als auch Mitarbeiter.
The two nouns have the same syntactic role.
6.sowohl ... als auch with adjectives
Der Kurs ist sowohl interessant als auch praktisch.
Das Hotel ist sowohl günstig als auch zentral.
Die Aufgabe ist sowohl schwierig als auch wichtig.
The construction links two equal properties.
7.sowohl ... als auch with verbs
Sie kann sowohl lesen als auch schreiben.
Wir wollen sowohl sparen als auch investieren.
Er muss sowohl planen als auch organisieren.
The infinitives are parallel.
8.sowohl ... als auch with prepositional phrases
Er arbeitet sowohl in Berlin als auch in Hamburg.
Das gilt sowohl für Studenten als auch für Mitarbeiter.
Wir sprechen sowohl über Kosten als auch über Termine.
The preposition is often repeated when that makes the structure clearer.
9.Comma with sowohl ... als auch
Between simple sentence elements, there is normally no comma:
Sie spricht sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.
A comma may be required for other grammatical reasons, for example when full subordinate clauses are involved.
The paired connector itself does not automatically require a comma.
10.entweder ... oder: meaning
entweder A oder B
expresses an alternative.
Example:
Wir fahren entweder mit dem Zug oder mit dem Auto.
Core meaning:
one option or the other
11.entweder ... oder with nouns
Du kannst entweder Kaffee oder Tee bestellen.
Wir treffen entweder Anna oder Paul.
Here the alternative concerns nouns or noun phrases.
12.entweder ... oder with verbs
Du kannst entweder anrufen oder schreiben.
Wir müssen entweder sparen oder mehr verdienen.
The two verb groups should again be parallel.
13.entweder ... oder with whole main clauses
The construction can also connect whole statements:
Entweder du kommst heute, oder du kommst morgen.
Or more compactly:
Du kommst entweder heute oder morgen.
The second version is often stylistically simpler.
14.Comma with entweder ... oder
With simple sentence elements:
no comma
Wir fahren entweder heute oder morgen.
With independent main clauses, a comma can be used:
Entweder du rufst an, oder du schreibst eine E-Mail.
15.weder ... noch: meaning
weder A noch B
means:
not A and not B
Example:
Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee.
16.weder ... noch replaces two negatives
Compare:
Ich trinke keinen Kaffee und keinen Tee.
More compact:
Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee.
The second form is more elegant when two parallel elements are negated.
17.No extra nicht with weder ... noch
The construction normally does not need an additional negation.
Not:
*Ich trinke nicht weder Kaffee noch Tee.
But:
Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee.
18.weder ... noch with adjectives
Das Hotel ist weder günstig noch zentral.
Die Erklärung ist weder klar noch vollständig.
Both properties are negated.
19.weder ... noch with verbs
Er kann weder lesen noch schreiben.
Sie will weder anrufen noch antworten.
The two actions are jointly negated.
20.Subject and verb with weder ... noch
When weder ... noch connects two subjects:
Weder Anna noch Paul kommt heute.
With two singular people, singular agreement is possible in standard German, especially when the pair is treated as one unit.
Plural is also very common:
Weder Anna noch Paul kommen heute.
At B1, the plural is usually the safer and clearer choice.
21.nicht nur ... sondern auch: meaning
nicht nur A, sondern auch B
means:
A is true
and B is additionally true
B is often the stronger, more surprising, or more important point.
Example:
Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Japanisch.
22.Comma before sondern
There is normally a comma before sondern:
nicht nur A, sondern auch B
Example:
Das Hotel ist nicht nur günstig, sondern auch zentral.
23.nicht nur ... sondern auch with nouns
Wir brauchen nicht nur Zeit, sondern auch Geld.
Sie kennt nicht nur den Chef, sondern auch die Geschäftsführerin.
The two nouns are parallel.
24.nicht nur ... sondern auch with verbs
Er kann nicht nur kochen, sondern auch backen.
Wir wollen nicht nur planen, sondern auch handeln.
The two infinitives have the same structure.
25.nicht nur ... sondern auch with whole main clauses
Nicht nur hat er uns geholfen, sondern er hat auch die Kosten übernommen.
This is possible but stylistically marked.
At B1, it is often clearer to say:
Er hat uns nicht nur geholfen, sondern auch die Kosten übernommen.
26.sowohl ... als auch vs nicht nur ... sondern auch
Compare:
Sie spricht sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.
Neutral:
both languages
Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Englisch.
Additional focus:
English is added as an extra point
The second structure is rhetorically stronger.
27.zwar ... aber: meaning
zwar A, aber B
means:
A is true,
but B limits or qualifies A
Example:
Der Kurs ist zwar teuer, aber sehr gut.
28.zwar signals a concession
With zwar, the speaker first accepts one point:
Yes, A is true.
With aber, the speaker adds:
Even so, B is important.
Example:
Die Wohnung ist zwar klein, aber sehr hell.
29.Comma with zwar ... aber
There is a comma before aber:
Der Film ist zwar lang, aber interessant.
zwar itself does not require a comma.
The comma belongs to the aber connection.
30.zwar ... aber with whole clauses
Er hat zwar wenig Zeit, aber er hilft uns trotzdem.
Or more compact:
Er hat zwar wenig Zeit, hilft uns aber trotzdem.
The second version avoids repeating the subject.
31.zwar ... aber vs obwohl
Compare:
Die Wohnung ist zwar klein, aber hell.
and:
Obwohl die Wohnung klein ist, ist sie hell.
Both express concessive contrast.
But:
zwar ... aber
→ main-clause structure
obwohl
→ subordinate clause
32.einerseits ... andererseits: meaning
einerseits A, andererseits B
shows two sides of a topic.
Example:
Einerseits ist die Arbeit interessant, andererseits ist sie sehr stressig.
The structure is especially useful for:
argumentation
pros and cons
weighing options
33.einerseits ... andererseits connects perspectives
Typical pattern:
Einerseits ...
Andererseits ...
Example:
Einerseits spart Homeoffice Zeit. Andererseits fehlt der direkte Kontakt.
The two sides do not have to be exact opposites, but they should show two different perspectives.
34.Word order with einerseits / andererseits
When these connectors occupy position 1, the finite verb follows immediately:
Einerseits spart Homeoffice Zeit.
Andererseits fehlt der direkte Kontakt.
Pattern:
connector | verb | subject ...
Normal V2 rule.
35.einerseits ... andererseits in one sentence
Einerseits ist das Angebot günstig, andererseits fehlen wichtige Leistungen.
The construction can connect two main clauses within one sentence.
A comma separates the two parts.
36.zwar ... aber vs einerseits ... andererseits
zwar ... aber
→ A is acknowledged, B qualifies it
einerseits ... andererseits
→ two perspectives are weighed against each other
Examples:
Der Job ist zwar gut bezahlt, aber stressig.
Einerseits ist der Job gut bezahlt, andererseits ist er stressig.
The second sounds more like a deliberate evaluation.
37.je ... desto / umso: overview
je ... desto / umso is also a paired pattern:
Je mehr du übst, desto sicherer wirst du.
Meaning:
As A changes,
B changes correspondingly.
This construction is covered in more detail in the logic module.
38.The je-clause and desto-clause
Je mehr Zeit wir haben,
desto besser können wir planen.
First part:
je + comparative
→ subordinate-clause structure
Second part:
desto / umso + comparative
→ main clause with V2
39.mal ... mal
mal A, mal B
expresses alternating situations:
Mal ist er freundlich, mal ist er ungeduldig.
Mal arbeite ich zu Hause, mal im Büro.
Meaning:
alternating
sometimes one way, sometimes another
40.teils ... teils
teils A, teils B
means:
partly A, partly B
Example:
Die Reaktionen waren teils positiv, teils kritisch.
This form is more common in written or factual language.
41.bald ... bald
bald A, bald B
is more literary or written.
Example:
Bald regnete es, bald schien die Sonne.
For active B1 use, mal ... mal and teils ... teils are more important.
42.Keep either-or as a clear pair
With entweder ... oder, it should be clear which two alternatives belong together.
Clear:
Wir fahren entweder am Freitag oder am Samstag.
Less clear:
*Wir fahren entweder am Freitag mit dem Zug oder am Samstag.
Here time and transport are not parallel.
43.Focus position matters
Compare:
Sie arbeitet sowohl heute als auch morgen.
Focus:
time
Sie sowohl arbeitet heute als auch lernt morgen.
is not a good standard structure.
The paired connector should stand directly before the parallel elements.
44.Paired conjunctions can connect sentence elements
They can connect:
nouns
adjectives
adverbs
prepositional phrases
infinitives
whole clause parts
Examples:
sowohl Anna als auch Paul
weder schnell noch langsam
entweder heute oder morgen
sowohl in Berlin als auch in Köln
nicht nur lesen, sondern auch schreiben
45.Subject pairs with sowohl ... als auch
Sowohl Anna als auch Paul kommen heute.
With two singular subjects, the verb is normally plural:
kommen
because both people are included.
46.Subject pairs with entweder ... oder
Entweder Anna oder Paul kommt heute.
If both alternatives are singular, singular agreement is natural.
With different numbers, agreement can become more complex.
At B1, it is often better to restructure a sentence if agreement becomes difficult to parse.
47.Case should remain parallel
When two objects are linked, both stay in the appropriate case.
Ich sehe sowohl den Chef als auch die Assistentin.
Both are:
accusative
Ich spreche sowohl mit dem Chef als auch mit der Assistentin.
Both are:
dative after mit
48.Repeat prepositions symmetrically when useful
Especially with longer phrases, repetition improves clarity:
sowohl mit Kunden als auch mit Lieferanten
nicht nur für Deutschland, sondern auch für Österreich
weder in Berlin noch in Hamburg
The repetition makes the parallel structure visible.
49.Verb position is still determined by clause structure
Paired conjunctions do not automatically change basic word order.
Main clause:
Einerseits ist die Idee gut.
Subordinate clause:
..., weil sowohl Anna als auch Paul kommen.
Verb position still follows the normal clause rules.
50.sowohl ... als auch in a subordinate clause
..., weil wir sowohl Zeit als auch Geld brauchen.
The paired connector only links the objects.
The subordinate clause still has:
verb at the end
51.nicht nur ... sondern auch in a subordinate clause
..., weil sie nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Englisch spricht.
Again:
spricht
→ at the end of the subordinate clause
The paired structure does not change the subordinate-clause rule.
52.zwar can occupy different positions
Die Wohnung ist zwar klein, aber hell.
Zwar ist die Wohnung klein, aber sie ist hell.
Both are possible.
When zwar occupies position 1:
Zwar ist ...
normal V2 order follows.
53.entweder can stand in the middle field
Wir fahren entweder heute oder morgen.
Here entweder stands directly before the first alternative.
It does not need to be at the beginning of the sentence.
54.nicht nur should precede the focused element
Compare:
Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Englisch.
Focus:
languages
Sie spricht nicht nur schnell, sondern auch sehr deutlich.
Focus:
manner of speaking
Position shows what is being expanded.
55.Common mistake 1: forgetting the second half
Wrong or incomplete:
*Sie spricht sowohl Deutsch.
*Wir fahren entweder mit dem Zug.
If you start a paired structure, the second half normally needs to follow:
sowohl ... als auch
entweder ... oder
56.Common mistake 2: non-parallel structures
Problematic:
*Er interessiert sich sowohl für Musik als auch Filme sehen.
Better:
Er interessiert sich sowohl für Musik als auch für Filme.
Or, with two verb groups:
Er kann sowohl Musik hören als auch Filme schauen.
The two parts must be grammatically parallel.
57.Common mistake 3: adding nicht to weder ... noch
Not:
*Ich komme nicht weder heute noch morgen.
But:
Ich komme weder heute noch morgen.
weder ... noch already carries the negative meaning.
58.Common mistake 4: comma before als auch
Do not automatically write:
*Sie spricht sowohl Deutsch, als auch Englisch.
Standard:
Sie spricht sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.
No comma is required just because of als auch.
59.Common mistake 5: forgetting the comma before sondern
Wrong:
*Das ist nicht nur billig sondern auch praktisch.
Correct:
Das ist nicht nur billig, sondern auch praktisch.
60.Common mistake 6: zwar without a contrast
zwar normally leads to a continuation:
zwar A, aber B
Incomplete:
*Die Wohnung ist zwar klein.
This is only natural if the contrast is already clear from context.
As a learning model, use the complete pair.
61.Common mistake 7: entweder ... und
Not:
*entweder heute und morgen
But:
entweder heute oder morgen
The second half of the pair is fixed.
62.Common mistake 8: sowohl ... oder
Not:
*sowohl Deutsch oder Englisch
But:
sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch
Or, for an alternative:
entweder Deutsch oder Englisch
63.Common mistake 9: confusing zwar ... aber with nicht nur ... sondern auch
Compare:
Der Kurs ist zwar teuer, aber gut.
→ contrast
Der Kurs ist nicht nur teuer, sondern auch lang.
→ addition / reinforcement
The logical relation is different.
64.Common mistake 10: unbalanced einerseits and andererseits
Problematic:
*Einerseits ist die Arbeit stressig, andererseits verdiene ich gut und meine Kollegen.
Better:
Einerseits ist die Arbeit stressig, andererseits ist sie gut bezahlt.
The two perspectives should be clear and parallel.
65.A decision path
1. Are both A AND B true?
→ sowohl ... als auch
2. Is there a choice between A and B?
→ entweder ... oder
3. Are neither A nor B true?
→ weder ... noch
4. Is B added with stronger focus?
→ nicht nur ... sondern auch
5. Is A acknowledged but qualified by B?
→ zwar ... aber
6. Are two perspectives being weighed?
→ einerseits ... andererseits
66.Quick reference: core meanings
| Connector | Meaning |
|---|---|
sowohl ... als auch | A and B |
entweder ... oder | A or B |
weder ... noch | neither A nor B |
nicht nur ... sondern auch | A plus additional B |
zwar ... aber | A is true, but B qualifies it |
einerseits ... andererseits | two perspectives |
je ... desto/umso | parallel change |
mal ... mal | alternating |
teils ... teils | partly A, partly B |
67.Quick reference: punctuation
sowohl A als auch B
→ normally no comma
entweder A oder B
→ normally no comma
weder A noch B
→ normally no comma
nicht nur A, sondern auch B
→ comma before sondern
zwar A, aber B
→ comma before aber
einerseits ..., andererseits ...
→ comma between main clauses
68.Quick reference: parallelism
Good:
sowohl in Berlin als auch in Köln
entweder anrufen oder schreiben
weder billig noch praktisch
nicht nur für Kunden, sondern auch für Mitarbeiter
Remember:
Put the same grammatical type of information on both sides.
69.Paired conjunctions in formal argumentation
Especially useful are:
einerseits ... andererseits
zwar ... aber
nicht nur ... sondern auch
Example:
Einerseits senkt die Maßnahme die Kosten, andererseits erhöht sie den organisatorischen Aufwand.
These structures help organize and weigh arguments.
70.Paired conjunctions in presentations
Typical formulations:
Einerseits spricht dafür ..., andererseits ...
Nicht nur ..., sondern auch ...
Sowohl ... als auch ...
They make the structure of a presentation easy for listeners to follow.
71.Paired conjunctions in complaints and emails
Examples:
Nicht nur die Lieferung war verspätet, sondern auch die Ware war beschädigt.
Einerseits verstehe ich die Situation, andererseits benötige ich dringend eine Lösung.
Such structures help connect several points clearly.
72.Paired conjunctions in descriptions
Die Wohnung ist sowohl hell als auch ruhig.
Das Gerät ist zwar klein, aber leistungsfähig.
Der Kurs ist weder zu leicht noch zu schwer.
These structures combine properties precisely.
73.Connectors as thinking tools
These pairs are not only grammatical tools but also thinking tools:
addition
alternative
double negation
reinforcement
contrast
weighing perspectives
parallel change
Once you recognize the logical function, choosing the connector becomes easier.
74.What really matters at B1
At B1, you should actively control:
sowohl ... als auch
entweder ... oder
weder ... noch
nicht nur ... sondern auch
zwar ... aber
einerseits ... andererseits
You should also recognize:
je ... desto / umso
mal ... mal
teils ... teils
Clean parallel structure matters more than rare variants.
75.Summary
The six core pairs are:
sowohl ... als auch
→ A and B
entweder ... oder
→ A or B
weder ... noch
→ neither A nor B
nicht nur ... sondern auch
→ A plus a more strongly focused B
zwar ... aber
→ A is true, but B qualifies it
einerseits ... andererseits
→ two perspectives are weighed
The key structural principle is:
build A and B in grammatical parallel
The key punctuation principle:
no automatic comma with
sowohl / entweder / weder
but use a comma before
sondern / aber
Remember:
Paired conjunctions are logical pairs.
When meaning, position, and parallelism are right, the sentence becomes immediately clearer.
