1.What this page explains
obwohl, trotzdem, and trotz express concession: something happens despite an obstacle or counter-reason.
The basic idea is:
obstacle / counter-reason
→ expected result would be A
→ actual result is B
Example:
Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.
The rain would normally argue against going for a walk, but the walk still happens.
At B1, it is important to express the same logical relationship in three different grammatical forms.
2.Three forms — one logic
The three structures differ grammatically:
obwohl + subordinate clause
trotzdem + main clause
trotz + noun phrase
Compare the same situation:
Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.
Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.
Trotz des Regens gehen wir spazieren.
The logic is almost the same, but the grammar is different.
3.obwohl: subordinate clause with the verb at the end
obwohl introduces a subordinate clause. Therefore, the conjugated verb stands at the end.
obwohl + ... + verb
Examples:
Obwohl ich müde bin, arbeite ich weiter.
Obwohl das Hotel teuer ist, ist es fast immer voll.
Obwohl er wenig Zeit hat, hilft er uns.
obwohl directly connects the obstacle and the unexpected main statement in one sentence.
4.trotzdem: an independent main clause
trotzdem is not a subordinate-clause connector. It stands in a main clause and behaves like a sentence adverb.
When trotzdem occupies position 1, the conjugated verb follows immediately:
Trotzdem + verb + subject + ...
Examples:
Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.
Ich bin müde. Trotzdem arbeite ich weiter.
Das Hotel ist teuer. Trotzdem ist es fast immer voll.
5.trotz: preposition + noun phrase
trotz is a preposition. It is followed not by a full subordinate clause, but by a noun phrase.
trotz + noun
Examples:
Trotz des Regens gehen wir spazieren.
Trotz seiner Müdigkeit arbeitet er weiter.
Trotz der hohen Preise ist das Restaurant voll.
This turns a full proposition into a more compact nominal expression.
6.Concession: the expectation is not fulfilled
The semantic logic is crucial.
Example:
It is raining.
Normally: We do not go for a walk.
Actually: We go for a walk.
This gives:
Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.
A concession therefore shows that a counter-reason is not strong enough to prevent the result.
7.obwohl at the beginning
Very often, the obwohl clause comes first.
The subordinate clause then occupies the first position, and the main clause begins with the conjugated verb.
Obwohl ..., verb + subject + ...
Examples:
Obwohl ich wenig Zeit habe, helfe ich dir.
Obwohl das Wetter schlecht ist, fahren wir los.
Obwohl sie krank ist, geht sie zur Arbeit.
8.obwohl after the main clause
The obwohl clause can also follow the main statement.
Ich helfe dir, obwohl ich wenig Zeit habe.
Wir fahren los, obwohl das Wetter schlecht ist.
Sie geht zur Arbeit, obwohl sie krank ist.
This order is especially natural when the main statement is in focus first and the obstacle is added afterward.
9.trotzdem in position 1
When trotzdem stands at the beginning of the main clause, the verb follows directly.
Correct:
Trotzdem gehe ich zur Arbeit.
Trotzdem fahren wir heute los.
Trotzdem hat er den Vertrag unterschrieben.
The following would be wrong:
*Trotzdem ich gehe zur Arbeit.
trotzdem does not introduce a subordinate clause.
10.trotzdem in the middle field
trotzdem can also stand later in the main clause.
Ich gehe trotzdem zur Arbeit.
Wir fahren heute trotzdem los.
Er hat den Vertrag trotzdem unterschrieben.
The exact position affects information focus, but main-clause word order remains.
11.From obwohl to trotzdem
An obwohl clause can often be transformed into two main clauses with trotzdem.
Obwohl ich müde bin, arbeite ich weiter.
becomes:
Ich bin müde. Trotzdem arbeite ich weiter.
Another example:
Obwohl die Wohnung klein ist, gefällt sie uns.
Die Wohnung ist klein. Trotzdem gefällt sie uns.
The logical relationship remains the same, but the text is split into two main clauses.
12.From obwohl to trotz
A full subordinate clause can often be transformed into a noun phrase with trotz.
Obwohl es stark regnet, gehen wir spazieren.
→
Trotz des starken Regens gehen wir spazieren.
Or:
Obwohl er müde ist, arbeitet er weiter.
→
Trotz seiner Müdigkeit arbeitet er weiter.
This often requires an appropriate noun.
13.trotz and the genitive
In standard German, trotz typically takes the genitive.
trotz des Regens
trotz der Kälte
trotz des Problems
trotz der Schwierigkeiten
Examples:
Trotz des starken Windes fährt die Fähre.
Trotz der Kälte sitzen viele Menschen draußen.
Trotz des Problems bleibt der Zeitplan unverändert.
Trotz der Schwierigkeiten hat das Team das Projekt beendet.
14.trotz with dative in everyday speech
In everyday speech, especially regionally and colloquially, trotz can also be heard with the dative.
For standard written German at B1, the genitive is the safe target structure.
standard:
trotz des Regens
colloquial / regional:
trotz dem Regen
For formal texts and exams, the genitive is therefore preferable.
15.Nominalization for trotz
To transform an obwohl clause into a trotz structure, you often need nominalization.
obwohl er müde ist
→ trotz seiner Müdigkeit
obwohl es kalt ist
→ trotz der Kälte
obwohl die Preise hoch sind
→ trotz der hohen Preise
This skill connects sentence grammar with vocabulary.
Trotz seiner Müdigkeit arbeitet er weiter.
Trotz der Kälte gehen die Kinder draußen spielen.
Trotz der hohen Preise ist das Restaurant voll.
16.obwohl with the present tense
obwohl works with all normal tenses. In the present tense, the structure is especially simple.
Examples:
Obwohl ich wenig verdiene, bin ich mit meiner Arbeit zufrieden.
Obwohl der Weg weit ist, gehe ich oft zu Fuß.
Obwohl das Gerät alt ist, funktioniert es noch gut.
17.obwohl with the Perfekt
In the Perfekt, the conjugated form of haben or sein stands at the end of the subordinate clause.
Obwohl ich wenig geschlafen habe, bin ich heute fit.
Obwohl der Zug zu spät angekommen ist, haben wir den Anschluss noch erreicht.
Obwohl sie viel gearbeitet hat, hat sie die Prüfung bestanden.
18.obwohl with modal verbs
With modal verbs, the verb group stands at the end.
Obwohl ich früh aufstehen muss, bleibe ich noch etwas länger.
Obwohl wir sparen sollten, kaufen wir ein neues Sofa.
Obwohl er nicht kommen kann, hilft er uns telefonisch.
Pattern:
obwohl + ... + infinitive + modal verb
19.obwohl with separable verbs
As in other subordinate clauses, a separable verb is not separated.
Main clause:
Der Zug fällt aus.
With obwohl:
Obwohl der Zug ausfällt, fahren viele Menschen zum Bahnhof.
The prefix remains attached to the verb.
20.Negation in concessive structures
Negative statements can also function as an obstacle or counter-reason.
Obwohl ich keine Erfahrung habe, möchte ich mich bewerben.
Ich habe keine Erfahrung. Trotzdem möchte ich mich bewerben.
Trotz fehlender Erfahrung möchte ich mich bewerben.
The logic remains the same: the obstacle does not prevent the action.
21.trotzdem and previous context
trotzdem very often refers back to information already mentioned in the previous sentence.
Der Weg war sehr lang. Trotzdem sind wir zu Fuß gegangen.
Das Angebot war teuer. Trotzdem haben wir es angenommen.
Sie hatte wenig Zeit. Trotzdem hat sie uns geholfen.
This makes trotzdem an important text connector at B1.
22.obwohl connects more tightly than trotzdem
With obwohl, obstacle and result stand in one sentence.
With trotzdem, they can be distributed across two main clauses.
Compare:
Obwohl der Weg lang war, sind wir zu Fuß gegangen.
Der Weg war lang. Trotzdem sind wir zu Fuß gegangen.
The first version is syntactically tighter; the second is more strongly divided at the text level.
23.trotz makes the style more compact
With trotz, a full subordinate clause can be condensed into a noun phrase.
Obwohl die Kosten hoch sind, wird das Projekt fortgesetzt.
Trotz der hohen Kosten wird das Projekt fortgesetzt.
The second version is shorter and often sounds more written or factual.
24.trotz with adjective + noun
After trotz, more complex noun phrases are common.
Examples:
Trotz des schlechten Wetters findet das Konzert statt.
Trotz der langen Wartezeit bleiben die Kunden ruhig.
Trotz hoher zusätzlicher Kosten wurde die Reparatur durchgeführt.
Here the preposition combines with the genitive and adjective endings.
25.Contrast with aber
aber expresses contrast, but not always genuine concession.
Das Hotel ist klein, aber gemütlich.
This is simply a contrast.
By contrast:
Obwohl das Hotel klein ist, gefällt es uns sehr.
Here there is an expectation: the small size could count against the hotel, but the result is still positive.
obwohl / trotzdem / trotz mark this unexpected relationship more strongly.
26.Contrast with weil
weil gives a reason that explains the main statement.
obwohl gives a counter-reason that could prevent the main statement, but does not.
Compare:
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
Obwohl ich krank bin, gehe ich zur Arbeit.
The logical direction is almost opposite.
27.Contrast with deshalb
deshalb marks a consequence. trotzdem, by contrast, marks a result that occurs against expectation.
Compare:
Es regnet. Deshalb bleiben wir zu Hause.
Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.
In the first case, the expected consequence follows. In the second, the expectation is broken.
28.Concession in argumentation
At B1, concession is especially important when acknowledging counterarguments.
Examples:
Obwohl Onlinekurse flexibel sind, fehlt manchmal der direkte Kontakt.
Die Lösung ist teuer. Trotzdem kann sie langfristig sinnvoll sein.
Trotz einiger Nachteile bietet das Modell viele Vorteile.
This shows that you are considering more than one side of a topic.
29.zwar ... aber as a related structure
A related B1 structure is zwar ... aber.
Die Wohnung ist zwar klein, aber sehr hell.
Der Kurs ist zwar teuer, aber sehr praktisch.
This construction also expresses a kind of concession, but uses two main-clause parts and a paired connector.
It is not identical to obwohl, but belongs to the same logical field.
30.Longer sentences with obwohl
At B1, an obwohl clause can contain additional information.
Obwohl ich den Kurs schon einmal besucht habe, möchte ich ihn wiederholen, weil ich noch unsicher bin.
Obwohl die Wohnung, die wir gesehen haben, sehr klein ist, überlegen wir noch.
Obwohl er wenig Erfahrung hat, kann er die Aufgabe wahrscheinlich gut lösen.
It is important to recognize the boundaries of the subordinate clauses clearly.
31.Concession in formal texts
In formal texts, trotz is especially useful because it can nominalize information compactly.
Trotz der aktuellen Schwierigkeiten wird das Projekt fortgesetzt.
Trotz des verspäteten Eingangs der Unterlagen konnte der Antrag bearbeitet werden.
Trotz mehrerer Rückfragen wurde die Vereinbarung rechtzeitig abgeschlossen.
obwohl is also correct, but often feels more clause-like and less condensed.
32.Concession in conversation
In conversation, obwohl and trotzdem are especially common.
Obwohl ich müde bin, komme ich noch mit.
Ich bin müde. Trotzdem komme ich noch mit.
Das Restaurant ist teuer. Trotzdem gehen wir gern dorthin.
trotz also occurs, but depending on the noun phrase it often sounds more compact and somewhat more written.
33.Information focus: what is foregrounded?
The three forms create different emphasis.
obwohl:
Obwohl es teuer ist, kaufen wir es.
Obstacle and result are tightly connected.
trotzdem:
Es ist teuer. Trotzdem kaufen wir es.
The second sentence highlights the unexpected reaction more strongly.
trotz:
Trotz des hohen Preises kaufen wir es.
The obstacle is presented compactly as a noun phrase.
34.Common mistakes
1. Not putting the verb at the end after obwohl
Wrong:
*Obwohl ich bin müde, arbeite ich weiter.
2. Using trotzdem like a subordinate conjunction
Wrong:
*Trotzdem ich müde bin, arbeite ich weiter.
3. Forgetting inversion after sentence-initial trotzdem
Wrong:
*Trotzdem ich arbeite weiter.
4. Putting a full clause after trotz
Wrong:
*Trotz ich müde bin ...
5. Avoiding genitive after trotz when formal standard German calls for it
For standard written German, the genitive is the safe choice.
Obwohl ich müde bin, arbeite ich weiter.
Ich bin müde. Trotzdem arbeite ich weiter.
Trotz meiner Müdigkeit arbeite ich weiter.
35.Practical decision strategy
When choosing among the three forms:
full subordinate clause?
→ obwohl
two main clauses / reference to previous sentence?
→ trotzdem
compact noun phrase?
→ trotz
Additionally:
more conversational / flexible
→ obwohl, trotzdem
more compact / often more written
→ trotz
This is a practical guideline, not a rigid style rule.
36.Compact comparison table
| Form | Grammar | Typical structure |
|---|---|---|
obwohl | conjunction + subordinate clause | obwohl ... verb |
trotzdem | sentence adverb + main clause | Trotzdem + verb + subject |
trotz | preposition + noun phrase | trotz + genitive |
Remember:
obwohl = although X, Y happens
trotzdem = X. Nevertheless, Y happens.
trotz = despite X, Y happens
37.Mini-dialogue: everyday life
The dialogue shows a typical spontaneous concession with trotzdem.
Bist du nicht müde?
Doch, ziemlich.
Und du gehst trotzdem noch mit?
Ja, ich möchte die anderen sehen.
38.Mini-text: argumentation
Here, all three structures are combined in one B1 argument.
Obwohl Homeoffice viele Vorteile hat, gibt es auch Nachteile.
Trotzdem möchten viele Beschäftigte zumindest teilweise von zu Hause arbeiten.
Trotz möglicher Kommunikationsprobleme bleibt das Modell für viele attraktiv.
39.Mini-text: formal style
In more factual texts, trotz is especially compact.
Trotz der kurzfristigen Änderung findet die Veranstaltung wie geplant statt.
Trotz einiger organisatorischer Probleme konnte das Programm vollständig durchgeführt werden.
Obwohl der Zeitplan eng war, wurden alle wichtigen Punkte besprochen.
