1.wo(r)- questions
Wo(r)-questions are especially important when a verb forms a fixed pattern with a preposition: warten auf, denken an, sprechen über, sich interessieren für, träumen von, teilnehmen an. When the question is about a thing, topic, activity, or situation, German often uses wo + preposition or wor + preposition.
The verb determines the preposition. The question form keeps exactly that preposition.
2.Verb + preposition stays one unit
With many German verbs the preposition belongs to a fixed pattern: warten auf + acc., denken an + acc., sprechen über + acc., sich interessieren für + acc., teilnehmen an + dat., träumen von + dat.. It is better not to learn only warten / denken / sprechen, but warten auf / denken an / sprechen über. Then the question follows at once: warten auf → Worauf …?, denken an → Woran …?, sprechen über → Worüber …?.
3.Wo- or wor-?
The form depends on the first sound of the preposition.
The preposition begins with a consonant
German normally uses wo + preposition: mit → womit, für → wofür, von → wovon, bei → wobei, zu → wozu, nach → wonach, gegen → wogegen.
The preposition begins with a vowel
An extra linking r appears: an → woran, auf → worauf, über → worüber, um → worum, in → worin, aus → woraus. The r connects the parts and makes pronunciation easier.
4.The forms are written as one word
Wo(r)-forms are written as one word: woran, worauf, worüber, worum, womit, wofür, wovon, wonach, wozu, wobei. Do not write them as separate words: wo auf, wo mit, wo für.
5.Worauf? — questions with auf
Many important patterns use auf: warten auf, sich freuen auf, achten auf, hoffen auf. Pattern: verb + auf → worauf?.
6.Woran? — questions with an
an also appears in many fixed patterns: denken an, sich erinnern an, teilnehmen an, arbeiten an. These verbs do not always take the same case. The question form woran does not visibly show the case.
7.Worüber? — questions with über
über is especially common with communication and topics: sprechen über, diskutieren über, sich ärgern über, sich freuen über.
sich freuen auf= looking forward to something ahead;sich freuen über= being happy about something present or past.
8.Wofür? — questions with für
für often appears with interest, purpose, and use: sich interessieren für, sich entscheiden für, brauchen für, verwenden für.
9.Wovon? — questions with von
von often appears with the source of information, dependence, or dreams: träumen von, abhängen von, erzählen von, wissen von.
10.Womit? — questions with mit
womit usually asks about a tool, means, or thing involved. For people, German does not use womit, but mit wem?.
11.Wonach? — questions with nach
nach appears with several common verbs: fragen nach, suchen nach, sich erkundigen nach. Pattern: nach → wonach.
12.Worum? — questions with um
um is part of several important patterns: sich kümmern um, bitten um, es geht um. The fixed question Worum geht es? is especially common («What is it about?»).
13.Wobei? — questions with bei
wobei can ask about an activity, situation, or area where help is needed. It is especially common in service and help situations.
14.Wozu? — questions with zu
wozu can belong to a verb pattern (gehören zu) and very often means «for what purpose?».
15.Wogegen? — questions with gegen
wogegen asks about a thing, position, or problem that something is directed against. The preposition from the answer remains in the question: gegen → wogegen.
16.Worin? — questions with in
worin asks about something in which something is located or exists in an abstract sense. At A2 it is less frequent than worauf, woran, or worüber, but it follows the same structural rule.
17.Woraus? — questions with aus
woraus often asks about material, components, or a source. A particularly useful pattern is bestehen aus → Woraus besteht …?.
18.Question form and answer belong together
Wo(r)-questions become easier when question and answer are learned as a pair. The preposition is the same in the question and the answer.
| Question | Typical answer |
|---|---|
Worauf wartest du? | auf den Bus |
Woran denkst du? | an die Prüfung |
Worüber sprecht ihr? | über das Problem |
Womit arbeitest du? | mit einem Computer |
Wovon träumst du? | von einer Reise |
19.The question form does not visibly show the case
Forms such as woran, worauf, worüber, womit do not directly show whether accusative or dative follows. With denken an + acc. you get Woran denkst du? → an die Prüfung; with teilnehmen an + dat. you also get Woran nimmst du teil? → an einem Kurs. The form woran is identical, so the verb-preposition pattern should be learned together with its case.
20.Wo(r)-question or ordinary location question?
Not every wo belongs to a verb-preposition pattern. In Wo wohnst du?, wo directly asks about a location. In Worauf wartest du?, auf belongs to the pattern warten auf. Also compare Wo arbeitest du? (= at what place?) and Woran arbeitest du? (= on what project / task?). The form changes the meaning significantly.
21.Things and topics — not people
Wo(r)-forms are normally used for things, topics, situations, and abstract content. For a person, German instead uses preposition + interrogative pronoun: Über wen sprecht ihr? (about a person) vs Worüber sprecht ihr? (about a topic). Likewise: womit? — with a thing; mit wem? — with a person; woran? — about / on a thing or situation; an wen? — to / about a person.
22.Word order in direct wo(r)-questions
Wo(r)-words normally stand at the beginning; the conjugated verb follows. Pattern: wo(r)-word + conjugated verb + subject + …? With a modal verb the same frame remains.
23.Wo(r)-questions in the Perfekt
The wo(r)-form remains the same in the Perfekt. The normal Perfekt sentence bracket remains intact.
24.Wo(r)-questions as indirect questions
Wo(r)-questions can also appear inside indirect questions. As with other indirect questions, the conjugated verb stands at the end of the embedded clause.
25.Reflexive verbs keep the reflexive pronoun
Many important verb-preposition patterns are reflexive: sich freuen auf, sich freuen über, sich interessieren für, sich erinnern an, sich kümmern um. The wo(r)-question does not change that — the reflexive pronoun still belongs to the verb.
26.The same verb can use different prepositions
Some verbs change meaning or function with different prepositions. An especially important contrast is sich freuen auf (looking forward to something ahead) and sich freuen über (happy about a present or past reason). Also: sprechen über — about a topic (Worüber sprecht ihr?); sprechen mit — with a person as conversation partner (Mit wem sprichst du?). The preposition carries meaning.
27.Common wo(r)-forms at a glance
| Preposition | Question form | Example |
|---|---|---|
an | woran | Woran denkst du? |
auf | worauf | Worauf wartest du? |
über | worüber | Worüber sprecht ihr? |
um | worum | Worum geht es? |
in | worin | Worin liegt das Problem? |
aus | woraus | Woraus besteht das? |
mit | womit | Womit arbeitest du? |
für | wofür | Wofür interessierst du dich? |
von | wovon | Wovon träumst du? |
nach | wonach | Wonach suchst du? |
bei | wobei | Wobei brauchst du Hilfe? |
zu | wozu | Wozu brauchst du das? |
gegen | wogegen | Wogegen protestieren sie? |
The form can be derived systematically from the preposition.
28.Common verb-preposition question pairs
| Verb pattern | Question |
|---|---|
warten auf | Worauf wartest du? |
denken an | Woran denkst du? |
sich erinnern an | Woran erinnerst du dich? |
teilnehmen an | Woran nimmst du teil? |
sprechen über | Worüber sprecht ihr? |
sich freuen auf | Worauf freust du dich? |
sich freuen über | Worüber freust du dich? |
sich interessieren für | Wofür interessierst du dich? |
träumen von | Wovon träumst du? |
abhängen von | Wovon hängt das ab? |
suchen nach | Wonach suchst du? |
sich kümmern um | Worum kümmerst du dich? |
bestehen aus | Woraus besteht das? |
These pairs are best learned as fixed units.
29.Colloquial German: preposition + was
In spoken German you may sometimes hear Auf was wartest du?, Über was sprecht ihr?, An was denkst du?. These forms do occur. In neutral standard German the compact forms are very important: Worauf wartest du?, Worüber sprecht ihr?, Woran denkst du?. At A2 it is useful to actively master wo(r)-forms, while still being able to understand colloquial variants.
30.Not every preposition forms an equally common wo(r)-question
In theory many prepositions can combine with wo- or wor-. In practice some forms are much more common than others. Very common: woran, worauf, worüber, womit, wofür, wovon, wonach, worum. More specialized: wobei, wozu, wogegen, worin, woraus. At A2 it is more important to master frequent verb-preposition patterns than to memorize a long list of rare forms.
31.Wo(r)-question and da(r)-answer
A typical German pair is wo(r)-…? → da(r)-…. Orientation: question about a thing → wo(r)-; reference to a thing → da(r)-. The exact formation and use of da(r)-pronouns is covered separately; here the question–answer link is enough.
32.Wo(r)-questions in everyday life
These questions are part of normal A2 communication: at work, in learning, when travelling, when shopping, and in everyday situations.
33.Common mistakes
| Mistake type | Wrong | Correct |
|---|---|---|
| wrong preposition | Womit wartest du? | Worauf wartest du? |
missing r before a vowel | Woauf wartest du? | Worauf wartest du? |
| written as separate words | Wo mit arbeitest du? | Womit arbeitest du? |
| wo(r)- for a person | Womit sprichst du? (person meant) | Mit wem sprichst du? |
| missing reflexive pronoun | Wofür interessierst du? | Wofür interessierst du dich? |
Do not learn only the preposition auf. Learn: warten auf + acc. → Worauf wartest du?.
34.A practical learning strategy
For each important verb, store four pieces of information together: the verb, the preposition, the case, and the question and reference forms. Example: warten auf + acc. — Worauf wartest du? — Ich warte auf den Bus. — Darauf warte ich schon lange. Or: teilnehmen an + dat. — Woran nimmst du teil? — Ich nehme an einem Kurs teil. — Daran nehme ich gern teil. This is more efficient than learning vocabulary in isolation.
35.Compact decision strategy
- Find the verb pattern:
warten auf,denken an,sprechen über. - Is the target a thing / topic or a person? Thing / topic →
wo(r)-; person → preposition +wen/wem. - Build the form: vowel at the start of the preposition →
woran, worauf, worüber; consonant →womit, wofür,wovon. - Use normal question word order:
Worauf+wartest+du?.
36.Compact reference table
| Question | Typical answer |
|---|---|
Worauf wartest du? | Auf den Bus. |
Woran denkst du? | An die Prüfung. |
Worüber sprecht ihr? | Über das Problem. |
Wofür interessierst du dich? | Für Geschichte. |
Wovon träumst du? | Von einer Reise. |
Womit arbeitest du? | Mit einem Laptop. |
Wonach suchst du? | Nach einer Lösung. |
Worum geht es? | Um den Vertrag. |
Wobei brauchst du Hilfe? | Bei der Anmeldung. |
Woraus besteht das? | Aus Holz. |
Worin liegt das Problem? | In der Planung. |
Wozu brauchst du das? | Zum Kochen. |
Memory rule for a thing / topic: wo(r)- + the same preposition as in the verb pattern. Learn verb + preposition → ask about a thing → wo(r)- + the same preposition. Example: warten auf + acc. → Worauf wartest du?.
