1.What reflexive verbs are
Reflexive verbs are used with a reflexive pronoun: mich, dich, sich, uns, euch. The verb and the pronoun often form one fixed unit: sich freuen, sich beeilen, sich interessieren, sich erinnern.
The action refers back to the same person or thing that is the subject.
2.The action returns to the subject
Compare Ich wasche das Auto and Ich wasche mich. In the first sentence the object is the car, not the speaker. In the second, mich refers to the same person as Ich. That is why mich is reflexive here.
3.Basic reflexive pronoun forms
In the accusative, the common forms are:
| Person | Reflexive pronoun |
|---|---|
| ich | mich |
| du | dich |
| er / sie / es | sich |
| wir | uns |
| ihr | euch |
| sie / Sie | sich |
4.Why sich appears several times
For er, sie, es, as well as for sie (they) and polite Sie, the reflexive form is the same: sich. The subject and the conjugated verb show which person is meant.
5.Learn reflexive verbs with sich
Dictionaries often list sich freuen, sich beeilen, sich interessieren, sich erinnern, sich entschuldigen. The element sich signals: in this meaning the verb is used reflexively. When conjugated, sich changes to match the person.
6.sich freuen
Infinitive: sich freuen. Conjugation: ich freue mich, du freust dich, er freut sich, wir freuen uns, ihr freut euch, sie freuen sich.
7.sich beeilen
sich beeilen is a typical inherently reflexive verb. The reflexive pronoun belongs to the usual pattern.
8.sich interessieren für
An important A2 pattern: sich interessieren für + Akkusativ. Learn the verb and the preposition together.
9.sich erinnern an
Pattern: sich erinnern an + Akkusativ.
10.sich freuen auf
For things that are expected or still ahead: sich freuen auf + Akkusativ.
11.sich freuen über
For a reaction to something already present or that has happened: sich freuen über + Akkusativ.
auf— expectation and the future;über— reaction to something already there.
12.Not every verb is always reflexive
Some verbs can be used reflexively or non-reflexively: Ich wasche das Auto / Ich wasche mich. With others, a reflexive form is not normal in everyday meaning: Ich öffne die Tür is fine, but Ich öffne mich usually is not in that sense. Look at the verb and the specific meaning.
13.Inherently reflexive verbs
For some verbs the reflexive pronoun is a fixed part of the meaning: sich beeilen, sich befinden, sich erkälten, sich irren. Without the reflexive pronoun that meaning normally does not work.
14.Reflexive use of an ordinary verb
An ordinary verb can direct the action back to the subject: jemanden waschen / sich waschen, jemanden vorstellen / sich vorstellen. The reflexive pronoun changes the direction of the action.
15.Meaning can change strongly
vorstellen can mean “introduce another person”: Ich stelle meinen Kollegen vor. Reflexively, sich vorstellen means “introduce oneself” or “imagine”.
16.The difference with treffen
jemanden treffen means to meet someone; sich treffen means to meet, often each other. Wir treffen uns morgen usually means “we meet each other”. The structure is reflexive; the meaning is often reciprocal.
17.Reflexive and reciprocal meaning
With a plural subject, the reflexive pronoun can sometimes mean “each other”: Wir sehen uns morgen. This is called reciprocal meaning. At A2 it is enough to recognise the most common patterns.
18.Frequent reflexive verbs at A2
Very useful: sich freuen, sich beeilen, sich interessieren, sich erinnern, sich treffen, sich fühlen, sich waschen, sich anziehen, sich ausruhen, sich entschuldigen, sich vorbereiten, sich entscheiden, sich kümmern, sich befinden. Many also have a fixed preposition.
19.sich fühlen
sich fühlen is very common when talking about health and how someone feels.
20.sich ausruhen
ausruhen is separable. In a main clause: Ich ruhe mich aus.
21.sich anziehen
anziehen is also separable.
22.sich vorbereiten auf
Pattern: sich vorbereiten auf + Akkusativ. Here the reflexive pronoun, the separable verb and the preposition all work together.
23.sich entscheiden für
Pattern: sich entscheiden für + Akkusativ. Very common in choice situations.
24.sich entschuldigen
Common patterns: sich entschuldigen bei + person and sich entschuldigen für + reason.
25.sich kümmern um
Pattern: sich kümmern um + Akkusativ — take care of someone or something, take responsibility.
26.sich befinden
In location meaning, sich befinden is a fixed reflexive structure.
27.Position in the main clause
In a simple main clause the typical pattern is: subject + conjugated verb + reflexive pronoun + the rest.
28.When the subject is a pronoun
Very often the reflexive pronoun comes right after the conjugated verb: Ich freue mich, Du beeilst dich, Wir treffen uns. This is a useful default position at A2.
29.When another element comes first
The verb stays in position 2. The subject pronoun follows the verb, and the reflexive pronoun follows that.
30.Questions
In yes/no questions the verb comes first. In W-questions the question word takes position 1. The reflexive pronoun remains part of the verb pattern.
31.Negation
Negation does not remove the reflexive pronoun.
32.Modal verbs
With a modal verb the reflexive construction stays with the infinitive. The form mich / dich / uns still matches the subject.
33.Infinitive with zu
In infinitive constructions the reflexive pronoun also remains.
34.Perfekt
Most common reflexive verbs form the Perfekt with haben. The reflexive pronoun stays in the sentence.
35.The reflexive pronoun in the Perfekt
The tense changes, but the reflexive link remains: Ich freue mich → Ich habe mich gefreut; Wir treffen uns → Wir haben uns getroffen.
36.In subordinate clauses
After weil, wenn, dass and other subordinating conjunctions the conjugated verb goes to the end. The reflexive pronoun stays inside the subordinate clause.
37.Accusative or dative: a first look
Not every reflexive pronoun is accusative. Compare: Ich wasche mich — here mich is accusative. But Ich wasche mir die Hände — here mir is dative, and die Hände is a separate accusative object.
If there is already a separate accusative object, with some verbs the reflexive pronoun is dative. With sie the difference is not visible in form, because both accusative and dative can be sich.
38.Reflexive and personal pronouns are not the same
Compare Er sieht ihn and Er sieht sich. ihn is another male person; sich is the same person as the subject. That is a central meaning difference.
39.Learn as a whole
Reflexive use cannot always be predicted logically from a translation. A good format is: sich erinnern an + Akk., sich interessieren für + Akk., sich kümmern um + Akk. — that is, verb + sich + preposition + case.
40.Common mistakes
| Mistake type | Incorrect | Correct |
|---|---|---|
| leaving out the reflexive pronoun | Ich interessiere für Musik. | Ich interessiere mich für Musik. |
| wrong person | Du freust mich. | Du freust dich. |
sich for every person | Ich freue sich. | Ich freue mich. |
| order with a separable verb | Ich mich ziehe an. | Ich ziehe mich an. |
| forgotten preposition | Ich interessiere mich Musik. | Ich interessiere mich für Musik. |
If the meaning is “you yourself are happy”, the form needed is dich, not mich.
41.Analysis algorithm
For a new reflexive verb, five steps help. First check whether sich belongs to the pattern: sich interessieren. Then find the subject: ich. Choose the reflexive form: ich → mich. Conjugate the verb: ich interessiere mich. Add complements: Ich interessiere mich für Musik.
42.Memory strategy
Do not learn only interessieren, but sich interessieren für + Akk.; not only erinnern, but sich erinnern an + Akk.; not only kümmern, but sich kümmern um + Akk. That way pronoun, preposition and case are stored together.
| Construction | Example |
|---|---|
sich freuen auf + Akk. | Ich freue mich auf das Wochenende. |
sich freuen über + Akk. | Ich freue mich über das Geschenk. |
sich interessieren für + Akk. | Ich interessiere mich für Sprachen. |
sich erinnern an + Akk. | Wir erinnern uns an die Reise. |
sich vorbereiten auf + Akk. | Ich bereite mich auf die Prüfung vor. |
sich entscheiden für + Akk. | Ich entscheide mich für den Zug. |
sich kümmern um + Akk. | Ich kümmere mich um die Kinder. |
sich beeilen | Ich beeile mich. |
sich treffen | Wir treffen uns morgen. |
sich fühlen | Wie fühlst du dich? |
