1.Main meanings of wenn
At A2 three functions of wenn matter most: condition, repeated situation, and a future moment. The finite verb in a wenn clause stands at the end.
2.wenn for conditions
Very often wenn means “if”. Logic: condition → possible result.
3.Answers “under what condition?”
You can ask mentally: under what condition will this happen? The full form joins result and condition.
4.wenn introduces a subordinate clause
wenn is a subordinating conjunction. So the finite verb stands at the end of the subordinate clause. Incorrect: wenn ich habe Zeit or wenn das Wetter ist gut.
5.Main clause + wenn
A very common structure: main clause, wenn subordinate clause.
6.wenn first, then the main-clause verb after the comma
The wenn part can come first. Important pattern: Wenn … verb, verb + subject …
7.Why the verb stands right after the comma
The whole wenn clause occupies position 1 of the main clause. So the finite verb follows immediately. Correct: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit. Incorrect: Wenn ich Zeit habe, ich komme mit.
8.Comma
A comma separates main clause and wenn clause — in both orders. Without a comma is wrong.
9.wenn for future situations
wenn is very common when talking about the future. German does not automatically require Futur I here.
10.Präsens can express the future
In German, Präsens is very often used for future situations. Both verbs are in Präsens, but the meaning is future. morgen and context point to the future.
11.Condition and future can overlap
A wenn clause can express a future moment and a condition at the same time. That is completely normal in German.
12.wenn for repeated situations
wenn can mean “when” / “whenever”. This is not one specific case, but a typical repeated situation.
13.immer wenn
To stress repetition, use immer wenn.
14.jedes Mal, wenn
Another clear model: jedes Mal, wenn .... There is a comma after Mal.
15.Repeated situations in the present
Here wenn describes typical or regular links.
16.Repeated situations in the past
Past repeated situations can also use wenn. For past repetitions, wenn is possible and very common.
17.The difference between wenn and als
A key A2 contrast: one-time past situation → als; repeated situation → wenn.
18.als for a one-time past event
This refers to a specific past period or one-time past context. Do not use wenn if one specific past period is meant.
19.wenn for past repetitions
Here wenn roughly means “every time when” — the situation was repeated.
20.wenn with sein
Very common patterns with sein:
21.wenn with ordinary verbs
22.wenn with separable verbs
In a subordinate clause the separable verb becomes one word again. Main clause: Ich stehe früh auf. Subordinate: wenn ich früh aufstehe — not wenn ich früh stehe auf.
Other forms: anrufen → wenn ich dich anrufe, einkaufen → wenn wir einkaufen, mitkommen → wenn sie mitkommt, aufmachen → wenn der Laden aufmacht.
23.wenn with modal verbs
With a modal verb, two verb forms stand at the end. Model: wenn + … + infinitive + modal verb.
24.wenn in Perfekt
A wenn clause can use Perfekt.
25.Perfekt in a future context
Perfekt in the wenn part often describes an action that must finish first: finish the work first, then go home.
26.wenn with Präteritum
Präteritum is also possible — especially for repeated past situations.
27.Negation in a wenn clause
28.Pronouns in a wenn clause
29.wenn with reflexive verbs
30.wenn with verb + preposition
31.wenn and Imperativ in the main clause
A condition can combine with a request or prompt.
32.wenn and falls
falls roughly means “if / in case”. It often sounds a little more hypothetical or uncertain than wenn. Both are possible; falls stresses more strongly that the condition may not be met.
33.wenn and ob
wenn and ob are not interchangeable. wenn = condition / time point; ob = yes/no indirect question. ob is covered in detail in the article on indirect questions.
34.wenn and wann
wenn = condition / repetition / future situation; wann = a question about time. Indirectly: Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt.
35.wenn and weil
Both introduce a subordinate clause and send the verb to the end, but the function differs: weil = reason; wenn = condition / repetition / time.
36.Same example, different meaning
With weil you name a reason (I am ill). With wenn you give a condition or typical pattern: if I am ill, I stay at home.
37.wenn and time markers
Very common are morgen, später, am Wochenende, immer, oft, jedes Mal.
38.Long wenn clauses
A subordinate clause can contain a lot of information; the verb still stays at the end.
39.Two wenn clauses in one context
You can describe alternative conditions and contrast two possible situations.
40.wenn in everyday situations
Typical topics: work, meetings, travel, health, weather, study, free time.
41.Common mistakes
Main-clause order after wenn
| Incorrect | Correct |
|---|---|
wenn ich habe Zeit | wenn ich Zeit habe |
Forgetting the comma
| Incorrect | Correct |
|---|---|
Wenn ich Zeit habe komme ich mit. | Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit. |
After initial wenn putting the subject before the verb
| Incorrect | Correct |
|---|---|
Wenn ich Zeit habe, ich komme mit. | Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit. |
Splitting a separable verb
| Incorrect | Correct |
|---|---|
wenn ich früh stehe auf | wenn ich früh aufstehe |
Using wenn for any one-time past event
If one specific past event is meant, use als.
| Incorrect | Correct |
|---|---|
Wenn ich gestern nach Hause kam ... | Als ich gestern nach Hause kam ... |
42.A useful building algorithm
- Form the condition:
Ich habe Zeit. - Form the result:
Ich komme mit. - Add
wenn:wenn ich Zeit ... - Move the verb to the end:
wenn ich Zeit habe - Join the parts:
Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.
43.How to analyse when reading
Example: Wenn ich morgen früher mit der Arbeit fertig bin, komme ich noch bei dir vorbei.
First isolate the subordinate clause: wenn ich morgen früher mit der Arbeit fertig bin. Then the main clause: komme ich noch bei dir vorbei. The verb bin marks the end of the subordinate clause.
44.Three questions help determine the meaning
When you see wenn, ask: is this a condition? a repeated situation? a future moment?
| Example | Meaning |
|---|---|
Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich. | condition |
Wenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Kaffee. | repeated / typical situation |
Ich rufe dich an, wenn ich angekommen bin. | future moment |
