weil — Giving a Reason

weil reasons: verb-final subordinate; comma; objects, separable, modals, Perfekt/Präteritum; clause first then main verb; weil vs denn/deshalb; negation; build and parse.

1.Core meaning of weil

weil means “because” and answers the question Warum?. It names a reason.

Warum gehst du früh ins Bett?
Ich gehe früh ins Bett, weil ich müde bin.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
Wir fahren mit dem Bus, weil es regnet.
Sie lernt Deutsch, weil sie in Deutschland arbeitet.

2.weil connects two ideas

A sentence with weil joins a statement or action with a reason.

Ich nehme einen Regenschirm.
Es regnet.
Ich nehme einen Regenschirm, weil es regnet.

3.Main clause and subordinate clause

weil introduces a subordinate clause. Pattern: main clause, weil subordinate clause. The weil part does not keep normal main-clause word order.

Ich fahre mit dem Bus, weil das Wetter schlecht ist.

4.The finite verb goes to the end

The core A2 model is: weil + subject + … + verb. The finite verb in the weil clause stands at the end.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
Wir gehen nicht spazieren, weil es stark regnet.
Er kommt später, weil er noch arbeitet.

5.Comparing a main clause and a weil clause

In a main clause the verb is in position 2; in a weil subordinate clause it moves to the end.

Main clauseSubordinate clause
Ich bin müde.weil ich müde bin
Er arbeitet heute.weil er heute arbeitet

6.Comma

The main clause and the weil clause are separated by a comma: main clause, weil subordinate clause.

Ich lerne heute nicht, weil ich Kopfschmerzen habe.

Without a comma is wrong: Ich lerne heute nicht weil ich Kopfschmerzen habe.

7.weil answers Warum?

The question Warum kommst du nicht? can be answered briefly with Weil ich krank bin. or with a full sentence.

Ich komme nicht, weil ich krank bin.

So weil is directly linked to the idea of a reason.

8.Simple reasons with sein

Very common patterns with sein:

weil ich müde bin
weil das Wetter schlecht ist
weil der Laden geschlossen ist
weil der Kurs interessant ist
Ich gehe nach Hause, weil ich müde bin.
Wir bleiben hier, weil das Café noch offen ist.

9.Reasons with ordinary verbs

weil ich arbeite
weil sie lernt
weil wir warten
weil er kocht
Ich kann nicht kommen, weil ich arbeite.
Sie bleibt zu Hause, weil sie für die Prüfung lernt.

10.Several constituents before the verb

Even if the subordinate clause becomes longer, the verb stays at the end. Subject, time, manner, place and other elements can stand before it.

weil ich heute lange im Büro arbeite
Ich komme später, weil ich heute lange im Büro arbeite.

11.weil with an Akkusativ object

An object does not change the end-verb rule.

weil ich einen Termin habe
Ich gehe jetzt, weil ich einen Termin habe.
Sie kauft das Buch, weil sie es für den Kurs braucht.

12.weil with a Dativ object

The structure remains: weil + subject + Dativ object + verb.

weil ich meiner Freundin helfe
Ich bleibe länger, weil ich meiner Freundin helfe.

13.weil with separable verbs

In a subordinate clause the separable verb becomes one word again. Main clause: Ich stehe früh auf. With weil: weil ich früh aufstehe — not weil ich früh stehe auf.

Ich gehe früh ins Bett, weil ich morgen früh aufstehe.
Ich brauche Geld, weil ich heute einkaufe.
Sie wartet, weil ihr Bruder noch mitkommt.

Other frequent forms: einkaufen → weil ich einkaufe, anrufen → weil ich dich anrufe, mitkommen → weil sie mitkommt, fernsehen → weil er fernsieht.

14.weil with modal verbs

With a modal verb, two verb forms stand at the end: weil + … + infinitive + modal verb.

weil ich heute arbeiten muss
Ich kann nicht kommen, weil ich heute arbeiten muss.
weil ich früh aufstehen muss
weil wir warten müssen
weil sie nicht fahren kann
weil er Deutsch lernen möchte
Wir nehmen ein Taxi, weil wir nicht warten können.
Sie bleibt zu Hause, weil sie lernen muss.

15.weil in Perfekt

A weil clause can also use Perfekt. Both parts of the Perfekt verb group end up at the end: Partizip II + auxiliary.

Ich habe schlecht geschlafen.
weil ich schlecht geschlafen habe
Ich bin müde, weil ich schlecht geschlafen habe.
weil ich viel gearbeitet habe
weil sie nach Berlin gefahren ist
Ich brauche eine Pause, weil ich viel gearbeitet habe.
Anna ist nicht hier, weil sie nach Berlin gefahren ist.

16.haben and sein stay conjugated

The auxiliary stands at the end and shows person.

with habenwith sein
weil ich gearbeitet habeweil ich gefahren bin
weil du gearbeitet hastweil du gefahren bist
weil er gearbeitet hatweil sie gefahren ist

17.weil with Präteritum of sein and haben

The forms war and hatte also stand at the end of the subordinate clause.

weil ich müde war
weil wir keine Zeit hatten
Ich bin früh gegangen, weil ich müde war.
Wir haben nicht gekocht, weil wir keine Zeit hatten.

18.The weil clause can come first

You can reverse the order. Only the organisation of information changes, not the meaning.

Weil ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.

19.When the subordinate clause comes first

After an initial weil clause comes the main clause. Important pattern: Weil … verb, verb + subject …

Weil ich müde bin, gehe ich früh ins Bett.

20.Why gehe stands right after the comma

The whole unit Weil ich müde bin occupies position 1 of the main clause. So the finite verb follows immediately. Incorrect: Weil ich müde bin, ich gehe früh ins Bett.

Weil ich müde bin, gehe ich früh ins Bett.

21.Two correct models

Both models are grammatically correct.

ModelExample
main, weil subordinateIch bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
Weil subordinate, mainWeil ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause.

22.Which order is more neutral?

In everyday speech it is very neutral to state the claim first, then the reason. If the reason is especially important or already central in the conversation, it can come first.

Ich komme später, weil ich noch arbeite.
Weil ich noch arbeite, komme ich später.

23.weil and denn

Both words can express a reason. The meaning is similar, but the grammar differs.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.

24.Word order after denn

After denn, normal main-clause word order remains: denn + subject + verb + … After weil, the verb is at the end. That is the main difference.

denn ich bin krank
weil ich krank bin

25.weil and denn in one table

ConjunctionFunctionVerb position
weilreasonverb at the end
dennreasonnormal main-clause order
weil ich keine Zeit habe
denn ich habe keine Zeit

26.weil and deshalb

weil introduces a reason. deshalb shows a result.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
Ich bin krank. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.

With weil: result, weil reason. With deshalb: reason. Deshalb result.

27.weil, darum and deswegen

darum and deswegen work like deshalb.

Ich bin müde. Deshalb gehe ich schlafen.
Ich bin müde. Darum gehe ich schlafen.
Ich bin müde. Deswegen gehe ich schlafen.

weil introduces a subordinate clause with the verb at the end; deshalb / darum / deswegen do not.

28.Several reasons

Reasons can be combined. If the structure is clear, the second weil can sometimes be left out. At A2, repeating weil is often easier to analyse.

Ich fahre nicht mit dem Fahrrad, weil es regnet und weil es sehr kalt ist.
weil es regnet und sehr kalt ist

29.A reason can be long

A weil clause may contain several elements, but the verb still stays at the end.

Ich komme heute nicht zum Kurs, weil ich einen wichtigen Termin beim Arzt habe.

Here subject, object and place stand before habe.

30.Negation in the weil clause

weil ich heute nicht arbeite
weil sie kein Auto hat
weil wir nicht genug Zeit haben
Ich komme mit, weil ich heute nicht arbeite.
Wir fahren mit dem Bus, weil wir kein Auto haben.

31.Pronouns in the weil clause

The final position still belongs to the verb.

weil ich ihn kenne
weil sie mir hilft
weil wir es brauchen
Ich frage Paul, weil ich ihn gut kenne.
Ich bin ihr dankbar, weil sie mir hilft.

32.weil with reflexive verbs

The reflexive pronoun stands before the verb.

weil ich mich beeile
weil sie sich interessiert
Ich nehme ein Taxi, weil ich mich beeile.
Sie liest den Artikel, weil sie sich für das Thema interessiert.

33.weil with verb + preposition

The preposition stays part of the verb pattern; the verb is at the end.

weil ich auf den Bus warte
weil sie mit ihrer Kollegin spricht
Ich bleibe hier, weil ich auf den Bus warte.
Sie kommt später, weil sie noch mit ihrer Kollegin spricht.

34.Common mistakes

Keeping main-clause order after weil

IncorrectCorrect
weil ich bin müdeweil ich müde bin

Forgetting the comma

IncorrectCorrect
Ich bleibe zu Hause weil ich krank bin.Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.

After initial weil putting the subject before the verb

IncorrectCorrect
Weil ich krank bin, ich bleibe zu Hause.Weil ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause.

Splitting a separable verb

IncorrectCorrect
weil ich früh stehe aufweil ich früh aufstehe

Wrong order with a modal verb

IncorrectCorrect
weil ich muss arbeitenweil ich arbeiten muss

35.A useful building algorithm

  1. Form the main statement: Ich bleibe zu Hause.
  2. Form the reason: Ich bin krank.
  3. Add weil: weil ich krank ...
  4. Move the verb to the end: weil ich krank bin
  5. Join the parts with a comma: Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.

36.How to parse a long sentence

Example: Ich fahre heute nicht zur Arbeit, weil mein Auto seit gestern nicht funktioniert.

First split: main clause — Ich fahre heute nicht zur Arbeit.; reason — weil mein Auto seit gestern nicht funktioniert. Then find the finite verb at the end: funktioniert. That makes the structure much clearer.
