wollen, dürfen and sollen

Forms and meanings of wollen, dürfen, sollen; Darf ich / Soll ich; nicht dürfen as ban; dürfen vs können, sollen vs müssen; V2, separable infinitives, negation, questions, mistakes.

1.wollen, dürfen and sollen

wollen, dürfen, and sollen are three very common German modal verbs. They express three different relationships to an action:

VerbRelationship to the action
wollenpersonal intention / desire
dürfenpermission
sollenan instruction, expectation, or recommendation from outside
Ich will heute zu Hause bleiben.
Ich darf heute zu Hause bleiben.
Ich soll heute zu Hause bleiben.

The action is the same — zu Hause bleiben — but the speaker's relationship to that action is different.

2.The shared modal-verb pattern

In a normal main clause, the conjugated modal verb stands in position 2 and the main infinitive goes to the end.

SubjectModalMiddleInfinitive
Ichwillheute längerarbeiten.
Dudarfsthierwarten.
Ersollseine Mutteranrufen.

The finite modal stands in position 2; the infinitive at the right edge.

3.Forms of wollen

wollen mainly means to want / intend.

PersonForm
ichwill
duwillst
er / sie / eswill
wirwollen
ihrwollt
sie / Siewollen
Ich will Deutsch lernen.
Du willst nach Berlin fahren.
Anna will heute kochen.
Wir wollen einen Film sehen.
Ihr wollt jetzt essen.
Sie wollen morgen kommen.

4.What wollen expresses

Personal intention

Ich will heute früh schlafen gehen.

This is the speaker's own intention.

Desire

Wir wollen Kaffee trinken.
Er will ein neues Fahrrad kaufen.

wollen is fairly direct. For polite requests, German often uses the softer möchten.

5.wollen + infinitive

After wollen, German uses a bare infinitive without zu.

Incorrect: Ich will Deutsch zu lernen.. Correct: Ich will Deutsch lernen..

Likewise:

Sie will morgen kommen.
Wir wollen heute kochen.

6.Forms of dürfen

dürfen is about permission.

PersonForm
ichdarf
dudarfst
er / sie / esdarf
wirdürfen
ihrdürft
sie / Siedürfen

The ü disappears in the singular forms: ich darf, du darfst, er darf.

7.What dürfen expresses

Permission

Du darfst hier sitzen.
Wir dürfen heute früher gehen.
Die Kinder dürfen draußen spielen.

It is allowed.

8.Darf ich ...?

A very important pattern for asking permission:

Darf ich hier sitzen?
Darf ich das Fenster öffnen?
Darf ich eine Frage stellen?

Here dürfen comes first because it is a yes/no question: Darf ich …?

9.nicht dürfen = prohibition

This contrast is essential.

Du darfst hier nicht rauchen.

Smoking is not allowed here.

Man darf hier nicht parken.
Ihr dürft das nicht machen.

nicht dürfen means there is no permission — a prohibition.

10.dürfen vs können

These verbs answer different questions.

VerbCore question
könnenAm I able / do I know how?
dürfenAm I allowed?

Ich kann schwimmen.

→ I can swim.

Ich darf hier schwimmen.

→ I am allowed to swim here.

English can can sometimes cover both meanings, so the distinction matters.

11.Forms of sollen

sollen expresses an instruction, expectation, recommendation, or task that does not come purely from the subject's own wish.

PersonForm
ichsoll
dusollst
er / sie / essoll
wirsollen
ihrsollt
sie / Siesollen
Ich soll mehr Wasser trinken.
Du sollst deine Mutter anrufen.
Wir sollen um acht Uhr kommen.

12.What sollen expresses

An instruction from another person

Du sollst dein Zimmer aufräumen.

Someone expects, asks, or tells the addressee to do this.

Recommendation

Du sollst mehr schlafen.
Sie sollen viel Wasser trinken.

Depending on context, this can be medical advice, an instruction, or a recommendation.

Expected action

Wir sollen um neun Uhr da sein.

This is what has been arranged, said, or expected.

13.Soll ich ...?

A very useful pattern:

Soll ich das Fenster öffnen?
Soll ich dir helfen?
Soll ich Anna anrufen?

The speaker is asking whether to do this — whether the listener wants or expects that action. So Soll ich ...? is common when offering an action or asking for guidance.

14.sollen vs müssen

They are related but not identical.

VerbCore idea
müssennecessity
sollenoutside expectation / instruction / recommendation

Ich muss heute arbeiten.

→ working is necessary.

Ich soll heute arbeiten.

→ I have been told / am expected to work today.

At A1, this distinction is enough.

15.The three meanings side by side

With the same action:

Ich will nach Hause gehen.

The speaker personally wants to go home.

Ich darf nach Hause gehen.

The speaker has permission.

Ich soll nach Hause gehen.

The speaker has been told / is expected to go home.

This is the most useful semantic contrast on this page.

16.Special singular pattern

With these modal verbs, ich and er / sie / es have the same form:

Personwollendürfensollen
ichwilldarfsoll
er / sie / eswilldarfsoll
duwillstdarfstsollst

The du form adds -st. This is a typical present-tense feature of modal verbs.

In a main clause, the modal verb is the finite verb.

Heute will ich zu Hause bleiben.
Im Büro darf man nicht rauchen.
Morgen soll Anna früher kommen.
Position 1ModalSubjectMiddleInfinitive
Heutewillichzu Hausebleiben.

18.Separable main verbs after a modal

After a modal, the main verb remains a complete infinitive.

Without a modal:

Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.

With a modal:

Ich will um sieben Uhr aufstehen.

Incorrect: Ich will um sieben Uhr stehen auf.. Correct: Ich will um sieben Uhr aufstehen..

Likewise:

Er soll seine Mutter anrufen.

After the modal, anrufen stays together as an infinitive.

19.Negation with wollen

Ich will nicht gehen.

The speaker does not want to go.

Sie will heute nicht arbeiten.

The negation belongs to the action the person does not want to perform.

20.Negation with dürfen

Du darfst nicht gehen.

Leaving is not allowed.

This is different from:

Du musst nicht gehen.

There is no obligation to leave — the person does not have to go.

21.Negation with sollen

Du sollst nicht so laut sprechen.

The instruction is not to speak so loudly / the addressee has been told not to speak so loudly.

The negation belongs to the content of the instruction.

22.Yes/no questions

With wollen

Willst du heute mitkommen?
Wollt ihr einen Film sehen?

With dürfen

Darf ich hereinkommen?
Dürfen wir hier warten?

With sollen

Soll ich anfangen?
Sollen wir jetzt gehen?

In all yes/no questions, the finite modal stands in position 1.

23.W-questions

Was willst du essen?
Wo dürfen wir parken?
Wann soll ich kommen?

W-question order: W-word → modal → subject → … → infinitive.

24.Common mistakes

Adding zu before the infinitive

Incorrect: Ich will zu gehen.. Correct: Ich will gehen..

Using the infinitive form of the modal

Incorrect: Ich wollen Deutsch lernen.. Correct: Ich will Deutsch lernen..

Confusing dürfen and können

Ich kann Auto fahren. → I know how / am able to drive.

Ich darf Auto fahren. → I am allowed to drive.

Confusing nicht dürfen and nicht müssen

Du darfst nicht gehen. → you must not / may not leave.

Du musst nicht gehen. → you do not have to leave.

Splitting a separable infinitive after a modal

Incorrect: Ich will früh stehen auf.. Correct: Ich will früh aufstehen..
