Frequency and Routine

Frequency scale immer–nie; einmal/pro; jeden Tag; montags/morgens; word order; nie vs nicht immer; habits vs one event; mistakes and reading a routine as a time map.

1.Frequency and routine

To talk about habits and daily routines, two questions matter: Wie oft? — how often? and Wann? — when?

ScaleIdea
immeralmost every time / always
oftoften
manchmalsometimes
seltenrarely
nienever
Ich trinke morgens immer Kaffee.
Wir gehen oft zu Fuß.
Sie arbeitet manchmal am Samstag.
Er sieht selten fern.
Ich rauche nie.

Frequency expressions show how regularly something happens. Time expressions such as morgens, montags or jeden Tag make a routine more precise.

2.A frequency scale

Many frequency words can be understood as a simple scale. They normally do not give an exact number. They express approximate frequency.

Ich koche immer selbst.
Ich koche oft selbst.
Ich koche manchmal selbst.
Ich koche selten selbst.
Ich koche nie selbst.

3.immer

immer means every time / always in the context being described.

Ich frühstücke immer zu Hause.
Der Bus kommt immer um acht Uhr.
Wir lernen immer am Abend.

immer does not necessarily mean “every minute”. It often means every time in this situation.

4.oft and häufig

oft means many times / often. häufig is very similar, but can sound a little more neutral or written.

Ich gehe oft ins Kino.
Sie fährt häufig mit dem Zug.

For A1, oft is the more important everyday word.

5.manchmal

manchmal means sometimes: not always, but more than rarely. It can stand at the beginning of the sentence or later in the clause.

Manchmal esse ich im Restaurant.
Wir arbeiten manchmal zu Hause.

6.selten

selten means rarely / not often.

Ich fahre selten mit dem Taxi.
Meine Eltern gehen selten ins Kino.

selten is not the same as nie: with selten, something does happen, just not often.

7.nie

nie means never / at no time.

Ich trinke nie Alkohol.
Er kommt nie zu spät.

nie already has negative meaning, so an extra nicht is normally unnecessary. Wrong: Ich komme nicht nie zu spät. Correct: Ich komme nie zu spät..

8.fast immer and fast nie

fast makes the frequency scale more precise.

ExpressionIdea
fast immervery often, but not always
fast nievery rarely, but not absolutely never
Ich stehe fast immer um sieben Uhr auf.
Wir essen fast nie Fast Food.

9.Exact frequency: einmal, zweimal, dreimal

When the frequency is exact, German can use numbers.

Ich gehe einmal pro Woche schwimmen.
Sie trainiert zweimal pro Woche.
Wir telefonieren dreimal im Monat.

Pattern: einmal / zweimal / dreimal + pro + period.

10.pro Tag, pro Woche, pro Monat

Here pro means approximately per / in each period.

Ich trinke zwei Liter Wasser pro Tag.
Der Kurs findet dreimal pro Woche statt.
Wir besuchen unsere Freunde einmal pro Monat.

11.jeden Tag, jede Woche, jedes Jahr

A very common way to express regularity is jeder + a time noun.

FormExample
jeden TagIch lerne jeden Tag Deutsch.
jede WocheWir kaufen jede Woche ein.
jedes Wochenende—
jeden Monat—
jedes JahrSie fährt jedes Jahr nach Italien.

The forms change according to the gender and case of the time noun. At A1, it is useful to learn these common combinations as fixed patterns.

12.Weekdays as routine: montags, dienstags …

A weekday with -s can express regular repetition.

FormIdea
montagsevery Monday
dienstagsevery Tuesday
samstagsevery Saturday
Montags arbeite ich zu Hause.
Wir gehen freitags ins Restaurant.
Sonntags schlafe ich länger.

Compare: am Montag — one particular Monday / point in time; montags — regularly on Mondays.

13.Times of day as routine: morgens, mittags, abends

Times of day with -s also often describe habits: morgens, mittags, nachmittags, abends, nachts.

Morgens trinke ich Tee.
Mittags esse ich in der Kantine.
Abends lese ich oft.
Nachts ist es ruhig.

14.Combining routine and clock time

A routine can contain several time expressions.

Ich stehe jeden Tag um sieben Uhr auf.
Montags beginnt der Kurs um neun Uhr.
Wir essen abends gegen sieben Uhr.

This lets you say how often something happens, on which day, at what time of day, and at what exact time.

15.Where do frequency words stand?

In a simple main clause, words such as oft, immer, manchmal, selten, nie often stand in the middle field, after the finite verb and the subject when the subject comes first.

Ich gehe oft ins Kino.
Wir essen manchmal draußen.
Er kommt nie zu spät.

Exact placement can depend on sentence structure and focus. For A1, this basic pattern is reliable: subject + verb + frequency + further information.

16.Frequency expressions can begin the sentence

Time and frequency expressions can also occupy the first position. Verb position 2 still applies.

Manchmal fahre ich mit dem Bus.
Morgens trinke ich Kaffee.
Montags arbeite ich zu Hause.
Position 1Position 2Rest
Manchmalfahreich mit dem Bus.
Morgenstrinkeich Kaffee.

Wrong: Manchmal ich fahre mit dem Bus.

17.Several time expressions in one sentence

Several time expressions can appear together.

Ich gehe montags morgens um acht Uhr zur Arbeit.
Wir trainieren zweimal pro Woche am Abend.

At A1, the most important goal is a clear order. A useful tendency is: general repetition → day / time of day → exact clock time. Example: jeden Tag → morgens → um sieben Uhr.

18.nie and nicht immer are not the same

Ich esse nie Fleisch.
Ich esse nicht immer Fleisch.

The first means it never happens. The second means sometimes I eat meat and sometimes I do not.

ExpressionIdea
nie0% in the described context
nicht immerless than always, but not necessarily rarely

19.immer and jeden Tag are similar, but not identical

Ich trinke morgens immer Kaffee. emphasizes regularity within a situation. Ich trinke jeden Tag Kaffee. names a specific repeating period.

In many contexts, the two sentences can express almost the same idea, but the perspective is different.

20.Typical verbs for routines

Common routine verbs include aufstehen, frühstücken, arbeiten, lernen, essen, einkaufen, kochen, trainieren, fernsehen, schlafen gehen.

Ich stehe werktags um sechs Uhr auf.
Wir kochen abends zusammen.
Sie geht meistens um elf Uhr schlafen.

21.meistens

meistens means in most cases / usually and is roughly between immer and oft.

Ich fahre meistens mit dem Fahrrad.
Wir essen meistens zu Hause.

A useful orientation scale: immer → meistens → oft → manchmal → selten → nie. This is only an orientation, not a mathematical measurement.

22.Asking about frequency

The key question is Wie oft lernst du Deutsch?

Possible answers:

Jeden Tag.
Dreimal pro Woche.
Oft.
Nur selten.

For routines, you can also ask Wann arbeitest du? or Was machst du morgens?. These questions belong to the same time system but ask for different kinds of information.

23.Habit vs one-time event

HabitOne occasion
Ich arbeite montags zu Hause.Ich arbeite am Montag zu Hause.
morgens — regularly in the morningam Morgen — on a particular morning / as a time phrase

The first sentence means regularly on Mondays. The second means on one particular Monday. This distinction is especially important when talking about routines.

24.Combining frequency with nicht

A frequency statement can also be limited with nicht.

Ich gehe nicht oft ins Kino.
Wir essen nicht immer zusammen.

The first means I do go to the cinema, but rather rarely. The second means sometimes we eat separately.

ExpressionIdea
niecomplete negative frequency
nicht oftrather rarely
nicht immersometimes not

25.Common mistakes

Forgetting verb position 2

If a time expression is in position 1, the finite verb remains in position 2: not Montags ich arbeite zu Hause., but Montags arbeite ich zu Hause..

Double-negating nie

nie already contains negation. Wrong: Ich komme nicht nie zu spät. Correct: Ich komme nie zu spät..

Confusing am Montag and montags

am Montag means a particular Monday. montags means every Monday / regularly.

Treating clock time as frequency

um sieben Uhr is a point in time. jeden Tag is frequency / repetition.

Understanding immer as “every minute”

In many sentences, immer simply means every time in a particular situation.

26.Reading a routine as a time map

A longer sentence can be split into smaller time signals.

Ich gehe werktags morgens um sieben Uhr aus dem Haus und komme abends meistens um sechs zurück.
SignalQuestion
werktagswhich days?
morgenswhat time of day?
um 7 Uhrexact time
meistenshow often does this pattern hold?
abendswhat time of day?
um 6 Uhrexact time

This way of reading helps with longer everyday sentences: first how often, then when — day, time of day, exact clock time.
