Negative Article kein

ein→kein forms; plural keine; Akk keinen; kein vs nicht; zero-article nouns; collocations; fixed expressions; form map; A1 choice strategy.

1.The negative article kein

kein primarily negates a noun phrase. The link to the indefinite article is direct: ein Auto → kein Auto, eine Wohnung → keine Wohnung, Bücher → keine Bücher.

kein negates a noun or noun phrase that in the affirmative would often stand with ein/eine or with no article.

At A1 the key points are the forms kein, keine, keinen; singular and plural; nominative and accusative; kein vs nicht; frequent patterns with haben, brauchen, finden, sehen; and typical mistakes.

2.ein becomes kein

Ich habe ein Auto.
Ich habe kein Auto.
Sie hat eine Wohnung.
Sie hat keine Wohnung.

The link: ein → kein, eine → keine. In many forms kein behaves like the indefinite article ein.

3.kein does not simply mean “not”

Both kein and nicht create negation, but they do different jobs. kein usually relates to a noun:

Ich habe kein Auto.

nicht usually negates a verb, an adjective, another sentence part, or the whole statement:

Das Auto ist nicht neu.

Here neu is negated, not the noun Auto.

4.Basic nominative forms

Gender / numberFormExample
MasculinekeinKein Mann ist hier.
FemininekeineKeine Frau wartet.
NeuterkeinKein Kind schläft.
PluralkeineKeine Kinder spielen.

5.Masculine: kein

Kein Bus kommt.
Kein Mann wartet.
Kein Computer funktioniert.

6.Feminine: keine

Keine Lampe ist an.
Keine Frau ist da.
Keine Schule ist offen.

7.Neuter: kein

Kein Kind ist hier.
Kein Buch liegt auf dem Tisch.
Kein Auto steht vor dem Haus.

8.Plural: keine

Keine Kinder sind hier.
Keine Bücher liegen auf dem Tisch.
Keine Autos stehen vor dem Haus.

This matters: ein has no plural form, but kein has a normal plural form — keine.

9.kein has a plural; ein does not

You can say ein Buch, zwei Bücher, but not eine Bücher. In negation, however:

Keine Bücher sind hier.

That means “zero books here”. So plural keine is very frequent.

10.Accusative: the most important change

As with ein, the masculine form changes most clearly in the accusative.

Gender / numberNominativeAccusative
Masculinekeinkeinen
Femininekeinekeine
Neuterkeinkein
Pluralkeinekeine

A1 rule: masculine kein → keinen. The other three forms do not change in the accusative.

11.Masculine accusative: keinen

Kein Hund ist hier.
Ich sehe keinen Hund.
Kein Bus kommt.
Ich sehe keinen Bus.
Kein Kaffee ist da.
Ich trinke keinen Kaffee.

12.Feminine accusative: keine

Keine Zeitung ist hier.
Ich lese keine Zeitung.
Keine Tasche ist frei.
Ich brauche keine Tasche.

13.Neuter accusative: kein

Kein Buch ist hier.
Ich kaufe kein Buch.
Kein Auto ist frei.
Ich habe kein Auto.

14.Plural accusative: keine

Keine Freunde kommen.
Ich treffe keine Freunde.
Keine Äpfel sind da.
Ich kaufe keine Äpfel.

In the singular, kein closely follows the ein pattern.

MeaningMasculineFeminineNeuter
affirmativeein Manneine Frauein Kind
negativekein Mannkeine Fraukein Kind

In the accusative:

MeaningMasculineFeminineNeuter
affirmativeeinen Manneine Frauein Kind
negativekeinen Mannkeine Fraukein Kind

In the singular, kein declines like ein.

16.When kein is used

kein is especially typical where the affirmative would use ein/eine.

Ich habe einen Bruder.
Ich habe keinen Bruder.
Sie hat eine Schwester.
Sie hat keine Schwester.
Er kauft ein Auto.
Er kauft kein Auto.

17.kein with zero-article nouns

kein is also frequent when the affirmative noun stands without an article.

Ich trinke Kaffee.
Ich trinke keinen Kaffee.
Sie hat Zeit.
Sie hat keine Zeit.
Wir haben Geld.
Wir haben kein Geld.

kein can negate not only an ein/eine construction, but also a noun with no article.

18.Frequent collocations

Very common: kein Geld, keine Zeit, keine Lust, keine Ahnung, kein Problem, keine Idee, keinen Hunger, keinen Durst.

Ich habe keine Zeit.
Wir haben kein Geld.
Sie hat keine Ahnung.
Das ist kein Problem.
Ich habe keinen Hunger.

19.kein with haben

haben is one of the most frequent verbs with kein.

Ich habe kein Auto.
Du hast keine Zeit.
Er hat keinen Bruder.
Wir haben keine Kinder.

Why keinen Bruder? Bruder is masculine and here a direct object: der Bruder → einen Bruder → keinen Bruder.

20.kein with brauchen

Ich brauche keinen Termin.
Wir brauchen keine Hilfe.
Sie braucht kein Taxi.
Ihr braucht keine Tickets.

Again masculine accusative → keinen.

21.kein with sehen, finden, kaufen

Ich sehe keinen Bus.
Wir finden keine Wohnung.
Sie kauft kein Brot.
Er kauft keine Bücher.

These verbs often take an accusative object, so the form of kein depends on the noun’s gender and number.

22.kein with sein

Das ist ein Problem.
Das ist kein Problem.

In neutral standard German a profession is often named without an article: Er ist Arzt.. Negation: Er ist kein Arzt.. Here kein Arzt stands after sein, but it is not an ordinary accusative object.

23.kein and professions

Sie ist Ärztin.
Sie ist keine Ärztin.
Er ist Lehrer.
Er ist kein Lehrer.

Pattern: affirmative — profession without article; negation — kein + profession.

24.kein and the plural

In the affirmative, plural nouns often have no indefinite article.

Wir haben Kinder.
Wir haben keine Kinder.
Ich kaufe Bücher.
Ich kaufe keine Bücher.
Sie hat Freunde in Berlin.
Sie hat keine Freunde in Berlin.

25.kein or nicht? The basic choice

A useful A1 question: Am I negating a noun, or something else? If the noun as a unit is negated → kein. If a verb, adjective or another sentence part is negated → nicht.

Ich habe kein Auto.
Das Auto ist nicht neu.

26.kein vs nicht with the same noun

Das ist kein Auto.
Das Auto ist nicht neu.

First: this thing is not a car at all. Second: it is a car, but it is not new. An important meaning difference.

27.kein negates a category

Er ist kein Lehrer.
Das ist kein Kaffee.

First: he does not belong to the category “teacher”. Second: this drink is not coffee. So kein can mean “not one / no / zero members of this category”.

28.nicht negates a property or action

Der Lehrer ist nicht müde.
Ich arbeite heute nicht.
Das Buch ist nicht teuer.

The teacher exists; only müde is negated. The action arbeiten or the property teuer is negated.

29.kein with adjective + noun

kein can stand before a whole noun phrase:

Das ist kein gutes Hotel.
Sie hat keine neue Wohnung.
Ich brauche keinen großen Tisch.

Exact adjective endings are a separate topic. At A1 it is enough to see the structure: kein + adjective + noun.

30.kein in yes/no questions

Hast du ein Auto?
Nein, ich habe kein Auto.
Haben Sie Kinder?
Nein, ich habe keine Kinder.
Brauchst du einen Termin?
Nein, ich brauche keinen Termin.

31.kein in W-questions

Warum hast du kein Auto?
Warum hast du keine Zeit?
Warum kaufst du keine Bücher?

kein stays part of the noun phrase. Question word order does not change that.

32.Word order: kein stays with the noun

kein stands directly with its noun phrase: kein Auto, keine Zeit, keinen Termin, keine Bücher.

Ich habe heute keine Zeit.

Not: Ich keine habe heute Zeit. kein relates to the noun, not to the verb.

33.kein inside a verb frame

With modal verbs, kein still stays next to the noun:

Ich kann kein Auto kaufen.
Wir müssen keine Tickets kaufen.
Sie möchte keinen Kaffee trinken.

The modal and the infinitive form a frame; kein + noun sits inside it.

34.kein with möchten

Ich möchte keinen Kaffee.
Ich möchte keine Suppe.
Wir möchten kein Wasser.
Sie möchten keine Desserts.

So kein is also useful for polite refusal.

35.kein and quantity

kein often expresses quantity zero: keine Bücher = zero books; keine Kinder = zero children; kein Geld = no available money. So kein is especially natural when presence or quantity is negated.

36.But kein is not just a numeral

Grammatically kein is an article-type word. Compare kein Buch, zwei Bücher, drei Bücher. kein has grammatical endings (kein, keine, keinen), so the form must match gender, number and case.

37.The form depends on three things

To choose the right form, ask three questions:

  1. What is the noun’s gender?
  2. Singular or plural?
  3. Which case?

At A1 especially important:

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
Nominativekeinkeinekeinkeine
Accusativekeinenkeinekeinkeine

38.Step by step: Ich habe ___ Bruder

The noun der Bruder is masculine. After haben it is a direct object → accusative. Masculine accusative → keinen.

Ich habe keinen Bruder.

39.Step by step: Sie hat ___ Zeit

die Zeit is feminine; here accusative → keine.

Sie hat keine Zeit.

40.Step by step: Das ist ___ Problem

das Problem is neuter → kein Problem.

Das ist kein Problem.

41.Step by step: Wir haben ___ Kinder

die Kinder is plural → keine.

Wir haben keine Kinder.

42.Frequent fixed expressions

Kein Problem!
Keine Ahnung.
Keine Zeit.
Keine Sorge!
Kein Interesse.

Such expressions can also appear without a full sentence.

Kein Problem!

Kein Problem!

A common reaction: “it’s fine”, “no worries”, “you’re welcome”, “that’s not a problem”. Grammatically: das Problem → kein Problem.

Keine Ahnung

Keine Ahnung.
Ich habe keine Ahnung.

Ahnung is feminine: die Ahnung → keine Ahnung.

keine Lust and keine Zeit

Ich habe keine Lust.
Ich habe keine Zeit.

Both nouns are feminine (die Lust, die Zeit) → keine Lust, keine Zeit.

keinen Hunger and keinen Durst

Ich habe keinen Hunger.
Ich habe keinen Durst.

Both are masculine (der Hunger, der Durst). After haben this construction uses the accusative → keinen Hunger, keinen Durst.

43.Common mistakes

nicht instead of kein

Unnatural in a normal A1 pattern: Ich habe nicht Auto. Correct: Ich habe kein Auto. — the noun Auto and its presence are negated.

kein instead of nicht

Incorrect: Das Auto ist kein neu. Correct: Das Auto ist nicht neu. — neu is an adjective; a property is negated.

keinen with feminine

Incorrect: Ich habe keinen Zeit. Correct: Ich habe keine Zeit. — Zeit is feminine → keine Zeit.

kein with plural

Incorrect: Ich habe kein Freunde. Correct: Ich habe keine Freunde. — plural uses keine in nominative and accusative.

Forgetting masculine accusative

Incorrect: Ich sehe kein Mann. Correct: Ich sehe keinen Mann. — masculine accusative kein → keinen.

Double negation

In neutral standard German one does not normally say Ich habe nicht kein Auto. If the noun is negated: Ich habe kein Auto.. Double negation can have special meanings in special contexts, but that is not a basic A1 rule.

44.kein and definite articles

kein usually does not directly replace a definite article. Compare der Mann / ein Mann / kein Mann. Structurally kein is closer to the ein family. You cannot say kein der Mann.

45.kein and possessive articles

If the noun phrase is already determined by a possessive article, nicht is normally used, not kein.

Das ist nicht mein Auto.

Not: Das ist kein mein Auto. — mein Auto is already determined by the possessive.

46.kein and proper names

With proper names one usually uses nicht, not kein:

Anna kommt nicht.

Usually not Keine Anna kommt — unless a special reading like “no Anna at all” is meant. For A1: name → usually nicht; noun as category → often kein.

47.A look at the dative

Gender / numberDative
Masculinekeinem
Femininekeiner
Neuterkeinem
Pluralkeinen
mit keinem Mann
mit keiner Frau
mit keinem Kind
mit keinen Freunden

These forms will be taught systematically later.

48.A look at the genitive

Gender / numberGenitive
Masculinekeines
Femininekeiner
Neuterkeines
Pluralkeiner

At A1 it is enough to see them as part of the overall system.

49.Full form map

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
Nominativekeinkeinekeinkeine
Accusativekeinenkeinekeinkeine
Dativekeinemkeinerkeinemkeinen
Genitivekeineskeinerkeineskeiner

For this A1 page the first two rows matter most.

Later similar endings appear with mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, euer, Ihr.

keinPossessive
kein Mannmein Mann
keine Fraumeine Frau
keinen Mannmeinen Mann

So kein is a good entry into the wider family of ein-words.

51.Thinking strategy

If unsure, start from the affirmative form.

AffirmativeNegative
ein Bruderkein Bruder
einen Bruderkeinen Bruder
eine Wohnungkeine Wohnung

At A1 this transformation is very reliable.

52.Quick choice: kein or nicht?

Use kein if a noun is negated as a category or as something present: kein Auto, keine Zeit, keine Kinder, keinen Termin.

Use nicht if something else is negated: nicht müde, nicht heute, nicht arbeiten, nicht mein Auto.

53.Minimal A1 model

First learn these six models:

NominativeAccusative
kein Mannkeinen Mann
keine Fraukeine Frau
kein Kindkein Kind
keine Kinderkeine Kinder

The main visible change: masculine accusative kein → keinen.
