1.dieser and welcher
dieser and welcher stand before a noun and help show which person or thing is meant. dieser points to a specific object; welcher asks which object to choose.
Both words change form with the noun’s gender and number. At A1, first master the basic nominative forms.
2.Point vs ask
With dieser you select or point to a concrete item:
With welcher you ask which of several options is meant:
A natural pair: question Welcher Bus? → answer Dieser Bus.; Welche Tasche? → Diese Tasche.
3.Agreement with the noun
The form depends on masculine, feminine, neuter, or plural. In the nominative:
| Gender / number | Article | dieser | welcher |
|---|---|---|---|
| masculine | der | dieser | welcher |
| feminine | die | diese | welche |
| neuter | das | dieses | welches |
| Plural | die | diese | welche |
Endings are regular: -er masculine, -e feminine and plural, -es neuter.
4.Masculine
Link: der Bus → dieser Bus → welcher Bus?. The ending -er pairs well with the article der.
5.Feminine
die Tasche → diese Tasche → welche Tasche?.
6.Neuter
das Buch → dieses Buch → welches Buch?. The ending -es pairs well with das.
7.Plural
In the plural there is no gender split: for all nouns — diese / welche.
8.Link to der / die / das
Do not learn dieser and welcher as a separate system — link them to the definite article:
| Article | dieser | welcher |
|---|---|---|
der | dieser | welcher |
die | diese | welche |
das | dieses | welches |
die (plural) | diese | welche |
If you know the noun’s article, the basic nominative form is much easier. So learn nouns with their article (der Tisch, die Lampe, das Fenster), not as bare words.
9.dieser: pointing
dieser is used when the object can be identified from the situation — it is visible, already under discussion, or chosen from several options:
The idea: “this” — a specific highlighted object.
10.welcher: choice question
welcher usually asks not about any unknown thing, but about a choice within a group:
There are several trains, colours, restaurants — you need the right one.
11.welcher ≠ wer
wer asks about a person directly: Wer kommt heute?. welcher usually goes with a noun or a clear set of options: Welcher Student kommt heute?.
Wer kommt?— who is coming?
Welcher Student kommt?— which student from the group?
That contrast is enough for A1.
12.Before the noun
They often form one noun phrase: dieser Bus, welche Straße, dieses Buch, welche Kinder. In the sentence the whole group acts as one unit:
It helps to hear the block as a whole: dieser Bus, welches Buch.
13.Without repeating the noun
If context already makes the noun clear, it is sometimes left out:
dieses and diese stand alone. For beginners, the version with the noun is clearer: Dieses Buch., Diese Jacke.
14.Number must match
The form also shows singular vs plural:
| Singular | Plural |
|---|---|
dieses Buch | diese Bücher |
welches Buch? | welche Bücher? |
15.Verb agreement
If the group is the subject, the verb agrees in number. dieser and welcher do not themselves “give” the verb ending — the noun and the whole subject group matter:
16.Verb position 2
If the noun phrase is the subject, it often comes first and the finite verb takes position 2:
The familiar main-clause structure stays in place.
17.Question–answer pairs
welcher and dieser work well together:
Mental model: WELCHER? — find the right option; DIESER — point to the chosen one.
18.Not the same as ein / eine
ein/eine often introduces an indefinite person or thing: Das ist ein Hotel.. dieser/diese/dieses points to a specific object: Dieses Hotel ist teuer..
ein Hotel— some / one hotel
dieses Hotel— this particular hotel
welches Hotel?— which of the available options?
19.Later, case matters too
This page focuses on the nominative. Later, forms also change by case: nominative dieser Mann / accusative diesen Mann; welcher Mann? / welchen Mann?. You do not need the full system now. The general idea: the ending agrees with gender, number, and later also case.
20.Typical mistakes
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
dieser Tasche | diese Tasche — die Tasche |
diese Buch | dieses Buch — das Buch |
Welche Bus fährt …? | Welcher Bus fährt …? |
dieses Bücher | diese Bücher |
treating wer and welcher as the same | Wer kommt? vs Welcher Student kommt? |
21.Learning strategy
Keep learning nouns with their article and link the forms mechanically:
| Article + noun | dieser | welcher |
|---|---|---|
der Bus | dieser Bus | welcher Bus? |
die Lampe | diese Lampe | welche Lampe? |
das Buch | dieses Buch | welches Buch? |
die Bücher | diese Bücher | welche Bücher? |
That way no separate unconnected system appears: knowledge of der / die / das becomes the base for dieser / welcher too.
