Travel, Hotel and Weather

Tickets, departure/arrival, platform; hotel reservation and room; weather with Es ist/Grad; packing and plans; mistakes and trip map.

1.Travel, hotel and weather

At A1 the focus is on organizing a simple trip: buy or ask about a ticket, understand departure and arrival, check in at a hotel, ask about services or report a simple problem, understand basic weather, and connect weather with travel plans.

When travelling, a few recurring communication tasks matter most: where and when, where you are staying, what you need at the hotel, and what the weather is like.

BlockFlow
tripticket → departure / arrival
hotelreservation → room → services
weatherconditions → temperature → plans

2.The three parts of the topic

It is useful to divide the topic into three large blocks:

BlockMain questionTypical words
ReiseWhere, when and how am I travelling?Fahrkarte, Zug, Abfahrt, Ankunft
HotelWhere am I staying and what do I need?Reservierung, Zimmer, Frühstück, Schlüssel

In a real trip these blocks often connect:

Wir fahren morgen nach Hamburg.

Das Wetter ist kühl und regnerisch.

For cities and most countries without an article, German often uses nach + place. Some places use other patterns, for example in die Schweiz. At A1, it is most useful to learn the frequent combinations you actually need.

Von wann bis wann?
Vom 12. bis zum 15. Mai.
Wir kommen am Freitag und fahren am Sonntag.

20.Checking in

At check-in you may need these words: der Name, die Adresse, der Pass, der Ausweis, die Unterschrift. You do not need to understand every formal detail at A1; recognizing the key words and simple instructions is enough.

Kann ich bitte noch eine Decke haben?
Können Sie mir bitte ein Taxi rufen?

25.Reporting a simple problem

At A1, a few patterns are enough: ... funktioniert nicht., Es gibt kein / keine ..., ... ist kaputt. Clearly naming the problem is more important than giving a complex explanation.

Das WLAN funktioniert nicht.
Die Klimaanlage funktioniert nicht.
Es gibt kein warmes Wasser.
Die Lampe ist kaputt.

26.Finding your room or a service

Frequent questions ask where a room or service is. Typical answers contain im ersten Stock, im zweiten Stock, links, rechts, geradeaus, neben der Rezeption. The detailed system of directions is covered separately in the city and transport topic.

Wo ist Zimmer 214?
Wo ist der Aufzug?
Wo ist der Frühstücksraum?

27.Checking out

Useful words: auschecken, die Rechnung, bezahlen, die Schlüsselkarte. auschecken is a common conversational loanword. You may also hear abreisen with the more general meaning “to leave / depart”.

Gast: Für zwei Nächte.
Rezeption: Ja, ein Doppelzimmer mit Frühstück. Hier ist Ihre Schlüsselkarte.
Gast: Danke. Gibt es WLAN im Zimmer?
Rezeption: Ja, das WLAN ist kostenlos.

This dialogue shows a typical sequence: give the reservation name → confirm the length of stay → receive the room → ask about a service.

29.The main weather question

Wie ist das Wetter heute?
Wie ist das Wetter in München?

Am Abend ist es kühl.

31.Rain, snow and sunshine

Not all weather is expressed with Es ist ... Very frequent patterns: Es regnet. (It is raining.), Es schneit. (It is snowing.), Die Sonne scheint. (The sun is shining.). Do not mechanically build Es ist Regen instead of the normal Es regnet.

Heute regnet es.
Im Winter schneit es oft.
Die Sonne scheint.

32.Temperature: Grad

German uses Grad for temperature. At A1, confidently understanding numbers with Grad is enough.

Es sind 20 Grad.
Heute sind es 8 Grad.
Es sind minus zwei Grad.
Wie viel Grad sind es?
Wie warm ist es?

33.The seasons

The four core words are der Frühling, der Sommer, der Herbst, der Winter. With seasons, German often uses im.

Im Sommer ist es oft warm.
Im Winter ist es kalt.
Im Herbst regnet es oft.

34.Today and tomorrow: weather for a trip

36.Weather and simple plans

At A1, short connections are enough. This lets you express the practical connection without immediately needing complex subordinate clauses.

Heute ist das Wetter gut. Wir gehen spazieren.
Es regnet. Wir bleiben im Hotel.
Es ist warm. Wir fahren an den See.

37.If you do not understand the information

Communication repair phrases are especially useful while travelling:

Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?
Was bedeutet das?

These phrases are useful at stations, airports and hotels.

38.Politeness while travelling

Small words make communication sound much more natural: bitte, danke, vielen Dank, Entschuldigung, guten Morgen, guten Abend, auf Wiedersehen. Compare Ein Ticket nach Berlin. with the more natural Ein Ticket nach Berlin, bitte.

Ein Ticket nach Berlin, bitte.

39.Common mistakes

Mixing up fahren and fliegen

Ich fahre mit dem Zug.
Ich fliege mit dem Flugzeug.

Forgetting the separable part

Use Wann fährt der Zug ab? and Der Zug kommt um zehn Uhr an. — not Wann abfährt der Zug? or Der Zug ankommt um zehn Uhr. in a normal main clause.

Saying Ich habe Reservierung

German normally needs the article: Ich habe eine Reservierung.

Mixing up Zimmer and Wohnung

das Zimmer is a room or hotel room. die Wohnung is an apartment / flat.

Saying Es ist Regen

Normally: Es regnet.

Treating Grad like an ordinary counted noun

For temperatures, German says 20 Grad and 1 Grad. The form Grad stays the same in this temperature expression.

40.Compact map of useful patterns

weatherWie ist das Wetter?
conditionsEs ist sonnig / kalt / windig.
rainEs regnet.
temperatureEs sind 18 Grad.

This table is a map of the topic, not a list for mechanical memorization.

41.Connecting everything in one trip

A simple sequence combines transport, time, hotel, length of stay, a service, and weather:

Morgen fahren wir nach Leipzig.
Der Zug fährt um 9:20 Uhr ab.
Wir haben ein Hotelzimmer für zwei Nächte.
Das Frühstück ist inklusive.
Am Samstag ist es sonnig und warm.
Am Sonntag regnet es.

That is the central communication system of this topic.
