Building Text Cohesion with Pronouns and Reference

Learn and practise: Building Text Cohesion with Pronouns and Reference.

1.What this page explains

Text cohesion means that sentences are linguistically connected so that the reader can clearly understand:

who or what is meant
what a pronoun refers to
which information is being continued
how a new sentence connects to the previous one

At B2, grammatically correct individual sentences are not enough.
The sentences must also refer to one another.

Core devices on this page:

personal pronouns
demonstrative pronouns
pronominal adverbs
repetition through nouns
dies-/dazu/dabei/dadurch/daran
reference to whole statements

2.Cohesion and coherence

Two concepts are useful:

cohesion
→ linguistic linking on the surface

coherence
→ logical and semantic connectedness

Example:

Anna kaufte ein neues Fahrrad. Es war sehr leicht.

es creates cohesion.

The semantic link:

bicycle
→ property of the bicycle

creates coherence.

At B2, you need both.

3.Reference: the core principle

An expression can refer back to something already mentioned or known from context.

Example:

Wir haben eine neue Regel eingeführt. Sie gilt ab Montag.

sie refers to:

eine neue Regel

This link is called reference.

4.Antecedent and referring expression

In:

Wir haben eine neue Regel eingeführt. Sie gilt ab Montag.

we have:

eine neue Regel
→ antecedent

sie
→ referring expression

The referring expression picks up the earlier information.

5.Anaphoric reference

When an expression refers backward to something mentioned earlier:

Die Stadt plant ein neues Verkehrskonzept. Es soll 2027 eingeführt werden.

es refers back to:

ein neues Verkehrskonzept

This is anaphoric reference.

6.Cataphoric reference

More rarely, an expression refers forward:

Das ist das Problem: Viele Mitarbeitende kennen die neue Regel nicht.

das announces the information that follows.

This is cataphoric reference.

At B2, you should recognize such structures, especially in formal writing.

7.Personal pronouns as cohesive devices

A simple core pattern:

Die Firma hat ein neues Produkt entwickelt. Es kommt im Herbst auf den Markt.

Instead of:

Die Firma hat ein neues Produkt entwickelt. Das neue Produkt kommt im Herbst auf den Markt.

es avoids unnecessary repetition.

8.Gender must match

der Bericht → er
die Studie → sie
das Projekt → es
die Projekte → sie

Examples:

Der Bericht ist fertig. Er wird morgen veröffentlicht.
Die Studie ist umfangreich. Sie enthält neue Daten.
Das Projekt läuft gut. Es endet im Juni.

9.Case must also match the function

The referring expression takes the case required by its function in the new sentence.

Example:

Ich habe den Bericht gelesen. Ich bespreche ihn morgen.

ihn is accusative because:

etwas besprechen + accusative

The case of the antecedent is not copied; the new syntactic function determines the case.

10.Dative reference

Wir haben mit der neuen Kollegin gesprochen. Wir haben ihr alle Unterlagen geschickt.

ihr refers to:

die neue Kollegin

and is dative because of:

jemandem etwas schicken

11.Pronouns reduce repetition, but not always

Too many pronouns can create ambiguity:

Die Firma informierte die Agentur über das Projekt. Sie erklärte, dass es später starten werde.

What does sie mean?

the company?
the agency?

If several possible referents exist, repeating the noun may be better.

12.Clarity before elegance

B2 principle:

Repetition is not automatically bad.

Compare:

Die Studie vergleicht zwei Modelle. Sie zeigt deutliche Unterschiede.

clear.

But with two feminine nouns:

Die Studie vergleicht die Methode mit der Strategie. Sie ist effizienter.

ambiguous.

Better:

Die Methode ist effizienter.

13.Demonstrative pronouns add stronger focus

Compare:

Der Vorschlag wurde diskutiert. Er wurde schließlich abgelehnt.

neutral.

Der Vorschlag wurde diskutiert. Dieser wurde schließlich abgelehnt.

more marked and more typical of written language.

dieser highlights the referent more strongly than er.

14.dieser / diese / dieses

Typical in factual writing:

Es wurden zwei Varianten geprüft. Diese unterscheiden sich deutlich.

Or singular:

Die Maßnahme wurde im Mai eingeführt. Diese soll die Kosten senken.

But:

Overusing dieser/diese/dieses can sound stiff.

15.dieser can contrast

With two referents:

Es gibt ein altes und ein neues Verfahren. Dieses ist schneller, jenes jedoch günstiger.

dieses and jenes can create contrastive reference.

In modern neutral usage, jenes tends to sound formal or elevated.

16.der/die/das as demonstrative pronouns

Possible in speech and also in writing:

Ich habe mit dem neuen Kollegen gesprochen. Der kennt das Problem bereits.

Here der is not an article, but a demonstrative pronoun.

It often sounds stronger or more contrastive than er.

In formal writing, dieser or a repeated noun phrase may be more neutral.

17.Das referring to a whole statement

Very important:

Die Lieferzeit wurde deutlich verlängert. Das führte zu Beschwerden.

das does not refer to one noun.

It refers to the whole information:

Die Lieferzeit wurde deutlich verlängert.

This is a typical B2 cohesion device.

18.Dies as whole-clause reference

More formal:

Die Lieferzeit wurde deutlich verlängert. Dies führte zu Beschwerden.

Tendency:

das
→ more neutral, more common

dies
→ more formal, more written

Both can refer back to a whole statement.

19.Dadurch: reference to cause or means

Die Prozesse wurden automatisiert. Dadurch konnten Fehler reduziert werden.

dadurch means roughly:

through this process
through this measure
as a result of this

It links the preceding statement with a consequence or mechanism.

20.Dabei: reference to the same process

Das Unternehmen stellte die Produktion um. Dabei wurden mehrere Abläufe vereinfacht.

dabei means roughly:

during this process
as part of this process

It keeps two pieces of information within the same event frame.

21.Dazu: reference to a point or addition

Wir müssen noch die Finanzierung klären. Dazu findet morgen ein Gespräch statt.

dazu can mean:

on this topic
for this purpose
in this context

The exact meaning depends on context.

22.Dafür: purpose, compensation, or reference

dafür has several possible meanings:

Wir brauchen mehr Zeit. Dafür müssen wir den Termin verschieben.

or:

Das Gerät ist teuer. Dafür ist es sehr zuverlässig.

Depending on context:

for this purpose
in return
as compensation
for this thing

So the logical reference must be clear.

23.Daran: reference with an

Die Finanzierung ist noch unsicher. Daran müssen wir weiterarbeiten.

daran picks up a thing when the following verb requires an + case.

Example:

an etwas arbeiten
→ daran arbeiten

24.Darauf: reference with auf

Die Genehmigung fehlt noch. Darauf warten wir seit Wochen.

Verb:

auf etwas warten

Therefore:

darauf

25.Darüber: reference with über

Es gibt mehrere neue Vorschläge. Darüber wird nächste Woche beraten.

Verb:

über etwas beraten
über etwas sprechen

Pronominal adverbs combine the preposition and backward reference in one word.

26.Davon: reference with von

Die Nachfrage ist gestiegen. Davon profitieren vor allem lokale Anbieter.

Or:

Es gibt mehrere Möglichkeiten. Davon ist eine besonders günstig.

So davon can be governed by a verb or used partitively.

27.Damit: reference or conjunction?

Compare:

Wir haben ein neues System. Damit können wir schneller arbeiten.

damit = with this system.

But:

Wir ändern den Prozess, damit wir schneller arbeiten können.

damit = purpose conjunction.

Same form, different function.

28.Pronominal adverbs for things

Typical principle:

an etwas → daran
auf etwas → darauf
mit etwas → damit
über etwas → darüber
von etwas → davon
für etwas → dafür

These forms help pick up a thing without repeating the noun.

29.No da(r)-form for people

With people:

mit ihm
mit ihr
über ihn
über sie
auf ihn
auf sie

Not:

*damit
*darüber
*darauf

when referring to a person.

Pronominal adverbs typically refer to things, content, or whole situations.

30.Referring to whole situations with da(r)-forms

Die Produktion wurde kurzfristig gestoppt. Darüber waren viele Kunden verärgert.

darüber can refer to the whole situation:

about the fact that production was stopped

This is especially important in abstract B2 texts.

31.Daher, deshalb, dadurch: not identical

Compare:

Die Nachfrage stieg. Deshalb wurden mehr Produkte bestellt.

→ logical consequence.

Die Produktion wurde automatisiert. Dadurch konnten Fehler reduziert werden.

→ means / mechanism.

dadurch more strongly means:

through this process

32.Nominal repetition

A pronoun is not always necessary.

Example:

Die Stadt hat ein neues Verkehrskonzept vorgestellt. Das Konzept sieht mehr Busspuren vor.

This noun-based repetition is especially useful when:

several referents are present
a new topic begins
the referent should be highlighted

33.Reference through a superordinate term

Instead of repeating the same noun:

Die Stadt hat ein neues Fahrradverleihsystem eingeführt. Das Angebot wird gut angenommen.

das Angebot is not a pronoun, but refers to the same entity.

Such lexical reference increases stylistic variation.

34.Reference through a synonym

Example:

Das Unternehmen kündigte eine Umstrukturierung an. Die Reorganisation soll im Herbst beginnen.

This can be elegant.

But:

The synonym must genuinely refer to the same thing.

If the meaning shifts, the reference becomes unclear.

35.Reference through a part term

Das Unternehmen veröffentlichte einen neuen Bericht. Besonders der Methodenteil wurde überarbeitet.

The second sentence refers not to the whole report, but to one part of it.

So cohesion can also arise through semantic relations such as:

whole → part
category → member
cause → consequence

36.Explicit reference with dieser Punkt / diese Frage

Formal texts often use:

Dieser Punkt ist besonders wichtig.
Diese Frage bleibt offen.
Dieser Aspekt wird im nächsten Abschnitt behandelt.

Such nouns make clear what type of information is being picked up.

37.dieser Aspekt

Die Digitalisierung verändert Arbeitsabläufe und Kommunikationswege. Dieser Aspekt wird in vielen Studien besonders hervorgehoben.

Caution:

dieser Aspekt should refer to a clearly identifiable point.

If several aspects were mentioned, the phrase may be too vague.

38.dieses Problem

Highly cohesive:

Viele Betriebe finden kaum Fachkräfte. Dieses Problem betrifft besonders kleinere Unternehmen.

The second noun phrase classifies the first statement as a:

problem

This is stronger than neutral das.

39.diese Entwicklung

Example:

Die Zahl der Onlinekäufe steigt seit Jahren. Diese Entwicklung verändert den Einzelhandel.

diese Entwicklung summarizes the previous information as a trend/process.

Such summarizing nouns are very important at B2.

40.diese Tatsache

Viele Beschäftigte arbeiten inzwischen hybrid. Diese Tatsache verändert die Büroplanung.

diese Tatsache treats the previous statement as a fact.

But:

If the statement is contested, Tatsache may be too strong.

More neutral options:

diese Entwicklung
diese Beobachtung
dieser Befund

41.dieser Befund

In reports and academic-style texts:

Die Fehlerrate sank deutlich. Dieser Befund spricht für die neue Methode.

Befund classifies the previous information as the result of an observation or analysis.

42.dieser Zusammenhang

Mit steigender Erfahrung sinkt die Fehlerquote. Dieser Zusammenhang zeigt sich besonders deutlich in Gruppe A.

The reference names not just an object, but a relationship.

43.das heißt as reformulating reference

Die Frist wird nicht verlängert. Das heißt, alle Unterlagen müssen bis Freitag vorliegen.

das heißt picks up the previous statement and makes its consequence or meaning more explicit.

44.genauer gesagt

Das Projekt wird verkleinert, genauer gesagt auf zwei Teilbereiche reduziert.

This form corrects or specifies the previous reference.

Cohesion is created through:

general statement
→ more precise restatement

45.mit anderen Worten

Die Maßnahme ist nicht skalierbar. Mit anderen Worten: Sie funktioniert nur in kleinen Teams.

The second statement refers back to the first but reformulates it more clearly or concretely.

46.solch- as a referring device

Es wurden mehrere kurzfristige Lösungen vorgeschlagen. Solche Maßnahmen helfen jedoch nur begrenzt.

solche does not necessarily refer to exactly the same individual items, but to items of the same type.

This is generic reference.

47.derselbe / dieselbe / dasselbe

When true identity is meant:

Wir verwenden in beiden Studien dieselbe Methode.

Or referentially:

Im ersten Projekt wurde Methode X verwendet. Dieselbe Methode kam auch im zweiten Projekt zum Einsatz.

dieselbe means:

identical, not merely similar

48.der gleiche vs derselbe

Difference:

derselbe
→ exactly identical

der gleiche
→ same type / equal in the relevant respect

Examples:

Wir lesen dasselbe Buch.
→ the very same copy or work

Wir haben die gleiche Aufgabe.
→ tasks of the same type/content

Everyday usage is sometimes less strict, but precise B2 writing benefits from the distinction.

49.beide as backward reference

Es wurden zwei Modelle getestet. Beide zeigten ähnliche Ergebnisse.

beide groups two previously mentioned referents together.

Very useful:

beide Varianten
beide Gruppen
beide Ansätze

50.jeweils for parallel reference

Die beiden Gruppen erhielten jeweils drei Aufgaben.

jeweils assigns information in parallel to several referents.

In complex comparisons, it prevents ambiguity:

A und B wurden jeweils separat ausgewertet.

51.the first / the second

With two clearly introduced items:

Es gibt zwei Verfahren. Das erste ist schneller, das zweite genauer.

This is often clearer than using several pronouns.

Especially useful in:

comparisons
reports
chart descriptions

52.ersterer / letzterer

Possible in formal writing:

Es wurden Methode A und Methode B verglichen. Erstere ist günstiger, Letztere genauer.

But:

erstere / letztere

sounds fairly written and can be hard to process in long sentences.

Often clearer:

Methode A ...
Methode B ...

53.Possessive determiners as reference

Die Firma stellte ein neues Produkt vor. Seine Vorteile liegen vor allem im niedrigen Energieverbrauch.

seine refers to:

das Produkt

Possessive forms can continue a reference chain without repeating the antecedent.

54.dessen / deren as local reference

Relative clauses can create cohesion inside complex sentences:

Das Unternehmen, dessen Umsatz gestiegen ist, investiert weiter.
Die Organisation, deren Mitglieder gewählt werden, ...

dessen/deren connect two pieces of information about the same referent.

55.Relative pronouns as local cohesion

Die Maßnahme, die im Mai eingeführt wurde, wird derzeit ausgewertet.

die directly refers to:

die Maßnahme

Relative pronouns connect information more tightly than two separate main clauses.

56.The definite article as reference

Compare:

Wir haben einen neuen Ansatz entwickelt. Der Ansatz wird jetzt getestet.

First mention:

einen neuen Ansatz

Subsequent mention:

der Ansatz

The definite article signals:

This referent is now established in the text.

57.Indefinite → definite

A very important text pattern:

Ein Problem trat auf. Das Problem konnte schnell gelöst werden.

Structure:

new
→ ein Problem

known
→ das Problem

Article choice therefore also contributes to cohesion.

58.A new referent needs introduction

Potentially problematic:

Der Experte erklärte die Ergebnisse.

if no expert has been mentioned and the reader cannot identify one.

Better:

Ein Experte erklärte die Ergebnisse. Der Experte wies außerdem auf zwei Risiken hin.

Reference chains begin with clear introduction.

59.Reference chains

A referent can be carried across several sentences:

Ein neues Projekt wurde gestartet.
Das Projekt untersucht regionale Unterschiede.
Es läuft zunächst ein Jahr.
Seine Ergebnisse sollen 2028 veröffentlicht werden.

Reference chain:

ein neues Projekt
→ das Projekt
→ es
→ seine Ergebnisse

60.Do not stretch a reference chain too far

If many new pieces of information appear between an antecedent and a pronoun, the reference can become unclear.

Heavy:

Ein Projekt wurde gestartet. Danach wurden mehrere Teams neu organisiert und zwei Abteilungen zusammengelegt. Außerdem änderte sich die Finanzierung. Es soll 2028 enden.

What does es refer to?

Better:

Das Projekt soll 2028 enden.

61.Reference across paragraph boundaries

At the beginning of a new paragraph, a full noun phrase is often better than a weak pronoun.

Weaker:

[new paragraph]
Es hat mehrere Vorteile.

Clearer:

[new paragraph]
Das neue Verfahren hat mehrere Vorteile.

Paragraph boundaries weaken reference chains.

62.Paragraph openings with summarising nouns

Very effective in formal writing:

Im vorherigen Abschnitt wurden mehrere Kostenrisiken beschrieben.

Diese Risiken betreffen vor allem kleinere Unternehmen.

Or:

Diese Entwicklung ...
Dieser Befund ...
Diese Unterschiede ...

This makes paragraph transitions explicit.

63.Das Folgende

Cataphoric:

Für die Bewertung ist das Folgende entscheidend: Die Daten stammen aus unterschiedlichen Zeiträumen.

das Folgende points forward.

It is more formal and structuring than simple:

Das ist wichtig:

64.the following point / question

Dabei stellt sich folgende Frage: Wie zuverlässig sind die Daten?

Or:

Folgender Punkt muss berücksichtigt werden: ...

Such forms announce new information and therefore create forward cohesion.

65.es as a genuine referring pronoun

Das Gerät ist neu. Es funktioniert zuverlässig.

Here es clearly refers to:

das Gerät

This is referential es.

66.es without concrete reference

Not every es refers to a noun:

Es regnet.
Es ist wichtig, die Daten zu prüfen.
Es gibt mehrere Möglichkeiten.

Here es is impersonal or formal.

Important for text analysis:

Not every pronoun automatically creates referential cohesion.

67.man as a generic referent

In Deutschland trennt man Müll nach verschiedenen Kategorien.

man does not refer to a specific previously mentioned person.

It refers generally to:

people
the population
typical agents

So man is generic rather than anaphoric.

68.jemand / niemand / einige / viele

Indefinite pronouns can continue group reference:

Mehrere Mitarbeitende äußerten Kritik. Einige forderten zusätzliche Informationen.

einige means:

a subset of the previously mentioned employees

Such forms help continue group reference in a nuanced way.

69.andere as contrastive reference

Einige Befragte bevorzugen Homeoffice. Andere arbeiten lieber im Büro.

andere refers to:

other members of the same reference group

Very useful in argumentation and data description.

70.die einen ... die anderen

Explicit group division:

Die einen sehen darin eine Chance, die anderen ein Risiko.

The construction creates two clearly contrasted subgroups.

It is compact and rhetorically strong.

71.Ellipsis can create cohesion

Das erste Modell ist günstig, das zweite teuer.

The second part omits:

ist

It is recovered from the parallel structure.

Ellipsis avoids repetition, but works only when the parallelism is clear.

72.Too much ellipsis becomes unclear

Heavy:

A schneller, B günstiger, C dagegen flexibler.

Without a clear sentence frame, this feels fragmentary.

In formal writing, ellipsis should simplify structure, not hide grammar.

73.Reference and sentence topic

A previously known referent often appears early in the sentence:

Das neue Verfahren wurde im Mai eingeführt. Es wird derzeit evaluiert.

Structure:

known information
→ early

new information
→ later

This topic-comment structure supports coherence.

74.Given before new

Compare:

Ein neues Problem trat auf. Dieses Problem betraf die Datensicherheit.

The second sentence begins with given information:

dieses Problem

and adds new information:

data security

This is easier to process.

75.Keep perspective consistent

Potentially problematic:

Die Studie untersucht drei Gruppen. Wir sehen dabei deutliche Unterschiede. Man kann außerdem erkennen, dass ...

The perspective shifts:

study
→ we
→ one

Not always wrong, but often stylistically unstable.

It is better to manage perspective deliberately.

76.Reference in formal emails

Typical reference patterns:

Vielen Dank für Ihre Nachricht. Darin schreiben Sie, dass ...

Sie erwähnen eine mögliche Terminverschiebung. Dazu hätte ich noch eine Frage.

Die vorgeschlagene Lösung ist grundsätzlich sinnvoll. Sie lässt sich jedoch ...

Good reference makes emails compact and clear.

77.darin / daraus / hierzu

Formal writing often uses:

darin
daraus
hierzu
hierbei
hierfür

Examples:

Im Bericht werden drei Risiken genannt. Darin liegt ein wichtiger Unterschied zur früheren Analyse.

Die Daten zeigen einen klaren Trend. Daraus ergibt sich eine neue Frage.

Hierzu liegen noch keine Zahlen vor.

hier- forms often sound more formal than corresponding da- forms.

78.hierbei and dabei

Compare:

Dabei wurden mehrere Probleme sichtbar.
Hierbei wurden mehrere Probleme sichtbar.

Tendency:

dabei
→ more neutral

hierbei
→ more formal, more written

Both can refer back to a previously described process.

79.daraus for inferential reference

Die Zahl der Beschwerden ist deutlich gestiegen. Daraus lässt sich jedoch nicht automatisch schließen, dass die Qualität gesunken ist.

daraus refers back to the preceding evidence base.

Very typical in:

analyses
reports
argumentation

80.daraufhin as event reference

Die Frist wurde verlängert. Daraufhin änderte das Team seinen Zeitplan.

daraufhin means:

after this event
in response to it

It creates temporal-causal cohesion.

81.im Anschluss daran

More formal:

Die Daten wurden bereinigt. Im Anschluss daran erfolgte die Auswertung.

daran refers back to the preceding process.

This is especially typical in:

process descriptions
reports
instructions

82.in diesem Zusammenhang

Die Energiepreise sind stark gestiegen. In diesem Zusammenhang wird über neue Förderprogramme diskutiert.

The phrase picks up a broader context.

It is useful when a simple pronoun would be too narrow.

83.in diesem Fall

Wenn die Nachfrage weiter sinkt, muss die Produktion angepasst werden. In diesem Fall wären zusätzliche Investitionen nicht sinnvoll.

in diesem Fall refers back to a previously defined condition or situation.

84.auf diese Weise

Die Daten werden automatisch überprüft. Auf diese Weise lassen sich viele Fehler früh erkennen.

The phrase refers back to a previously described method.

Meaning:

by this method
through this procedure

85.Reference and connectors complement each other

Compare:

Die Nachfrage sank. Deshalb wurde die Produktion reduziert.

deshalb marks the logical relation.

Die Nachfrage sank. Diese Entwicklung führte zu einer Reduzierung der Produktion.

diese Entwicklung marks reference and classifies the previous content.

Both create cohesion, but in different ways.

86.Common mistake 1: ambiguous er/sie/es

Ambiguous:

Die Abteilung informierte die Leitung über die Änderung. Sie reagierte sofort.

Sie can refer to:

the department
the management

Better:

Die Leitung reagierte sofort.

87.Common mistake 2: pronoun too far from antecedent

If several sentences intervene, a pronoun is often too weak.

B2 rule:

The greater the distance, the more likely you should name the referent again.

The goal is not maximum brevity, but unambiguous reference.

88.Common mistake 3: da(r)-form for people

Wrong for people:

*Ich habe einen Kollegen. Damit arbeite ich oft.

Correct:

Ich habe einen Kollegen. Mit ihm arbeite ich oft.

damit would refer to a thing or instrument.

89.Common mistake 4: dies/das without clear content

Weak:

Es gab Probleme mit den Kosten, dem Personal und der Technik. Dies war schwierig.

What exactly was difficult?

Better:

Diese Kombination von Problemen erschwerte die Umsetzung.

A summarising noun can make the reference precise.

90.Common mistake 5: wrong case in the pronoun

Not:

Der Bericht ist fertig. Wir sprechen morgen über er.

Correct:

Wir sprechen morgen über ihn.

The new construction determines the case:

über + accusative

91.Common mistake 6: mechanical synonym replacement

Not every synonym preserves exactly the same meaning.

For example:

Projekt
Vorhaben
Programm
Maßnahme

can overlap, but are not always identical.

When precision matters, repeating the same technical term is often better.

92.Common mistake 7: too many demonstratives

Stiff:

Diese Studie untersucht ...
Diese zeigt ...
Diese Ergebnisse ...
Diese Entwicklung ...

Better to vary:

die Studie
sie
die Ergebnisse
dieser Befund

But variation must not weaken reference clarity.

93.Common mistake 8: pronouns only, no noun chain

Heavy:

Es wurde eingeführt. Es wurde danach geändert. Es führte zu Problemen. Diese wurden später gelöst.

There is too little lexical orientation.

Better:

Das neue System wurde eingeführt. Es wurde später angepasst. Die Umstellung führte zunächst zu Problemen. Diese konnten später gelöst werden.

94.Common mistake 9: avoiding repetition at all costs

B2 writing quality does not mean:

use each noun only once

With technical terms, repetition is often desirable:

die Emissionen
die Emissionen
die Emissionen

may be more precise than a series of vague substitutes.

95.Common mistake 10: reference without logical coherence

Grammatical linkage does not automatically create semantic coherence:

Die Preise steigen. Diese Entwicklung ist blau.

The reference is formally present, but the statement makes no meaningful connection.

Cohesion can support coherence, but cannot replace it.

96.Decision path for reference

For every backward reference:

1. What is the referent?
2. Is it unambiguous?
3. How far back is it?
4. Person or thing?
5. Do I need case / a preposition?
6. Is a pronoun enough?
7. Would a noun or summarising expression be clearer?

These questions prevent most B2 reference errors.

97.Decision path: person or thing?

person
→ er/sie
→ ihn/ihr/ihm
→ mit ihm / über sie

thing
→ er/sie/es
→ case forms depending on gender/function
→ daran / darauf / damit / darüber ...

The distinction is especially important with prepositions.

98.Decision path: noun or whole statement?

Ask:

Does the new sentence refer to one noun?

Then use:

er/sie/es
dieser/diese/dieses
noun repetition

Or does it refer to the whole previous statement?

Then often:

das
dies
dadurch
dabei
daraus
diese Entwicklung
dieser Befund

99.Quick reference: people

der Kollege → er / ihn / ihm
die Kollegin → sie / ihr
die Kollegen → sie / ihnen

mit dem Kollegen
→ mit ihm

über die Kollegin
→ über sie

100.Quick reference: things

das Projekt → es
die Methode → sie
der Bericht → er

an das Problem denken
→ daran denken

über die Frage sprechen
→ darüber sprechen

mit dem System arbeiten
→ damit arbeiten

101.Quick reference: whole statements

Das führte zu ...
Dies zeigt, dass ...
Dadurch wurde ...
Dabei entstand ...
Daraus folgt ...
Diese Entwicklung ...
Dieser Befund ...
Dieses Problem ...
In diesem Zusammenhang ...

102.Quick reference: text transitions

dabei
→ within the same process

dadurch
→ through this process / mechanism

dazu
→ on this point / for this purpose

daraufhin
→ afterwards, in response

daraus
→ from this information

in diesem Zusammenhang
→ in the broader context

auf diese Weise
→ by this method

103.Connection to word order

Referring expressions often appear in the prefield:

Darüber sprechen wir morgen.
Dazu gibt es zwei Fragen.
Diese Entwicklung beobachten wir seit Jahren.

Normal V2 structure applies:

referring expression | finite verb | ...

104.Connection to connector choice

Reference answers:

What does the new sentence refer to?

Connector choice answers:

What logical relation exists?

Example:

Die Nachfrage sank. Diese Entwicklung war erwartet.

Reference.

Die Nachfrage sank. Deshalb wurde weniger produziert.

Consequence relation.

Good B2 texts combine both.

105.What should be active at B2

You should be able to use reliably:

er / sie / es
ihn / ihr / ihm / ihnen

dieser / diese / dieses
das / dies

daran / darauf / damit / darüber / davon / dafür
dabei / dadurch / daraus / daraufhin

diese Entwicklung
dieser Befund
dieses Problem
in diesem Zusammenhang
auf diese Weise

And you should know when repeating a noun is clearer than using a pronoun.

106.The core formula

Remember:

good reference
=
clear referent
+
correct grammatical form
+
appropriate distance
+
right discourse function

Not:

as many pronouns as possible

but:

as little repetition as useful,
as much explicit reference as necessary

107.Summary

Text cohesion does not come from one word, but from reference chains.

Typical chain:

ein neues Verfahren
→ das Verfahren
→ es
→ seine Vorteile
→ diese Entwicklung
→ dadurch

The main principles:

keep the referent unambiguous
choose gender and case correctly
distinguish people from things
use da(r)-forms for things/situations
refer to whole statements with das/dies/dadurch/daraus
repeat a noun again when distance becomes large
use lexical repetition deliberately

The key B2 idea:

A good text does not avoid repetition at any cost.
It ensures that the reader can follow every reference without guessing.
