Temporal–Causal–Modal–Local in the Mittelfeld

Learn and practise: Temporal–Causal–Modal–Local in the Mittelfeld.

1.What this page explains

In the German middle field (Mittelfeld), several constituents can occur between the finite verb and the right part of the verbal bracket. For adverbials, the well-known orientation is:

Temporal – Causal – Manner – Local
Time – Reason – Manner – Place

Example:

Ich fahre morgen wegen des Streiks mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit.

morgen → temporal
wegen des Streiks → causal
mit dem Fahrrad → manner
zur Arbeit → local / direction

At B2, however, the crucial point is:

TeKaMoLo is a neutral default tendency, not a rigid formula.

Pronouns, objects, information structure, focus, constituent length, and closeness to the verb can all change the order.

Compare:

Ich fahre morgen wegen des Streiks mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit.

Wegen des Streiks fahre ich morgen mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit.

Zur Arbeit fahre ich morgen wegen des Streiks mit dem Fahrrad.

All of these sentences can be correct, but they organize information differently.

The page is reference and self-study material. It contains no exercises or tests.

2.1. What is the middle field?

In a main clause, the middle field typically lies between the finite verb and the right part of the verbal bracket. Without a right bracket, it extends to the end of the clause.

Examples:

Ich habe gestern lange im Büro gearbeitet.

3.2. TeKaMoLo as the default order

The neutral order of several adverbials is often temporal – causal – manner – local.

Examples:

Ich arbeite heute wegen des Termins konzentriert im Büro.

4.3. Why this order is useful

TeKaMoLo provides a stable default structure when no adverbial is specially highlighted.

Examples:

Wir treffen uns morgen wegen der Planung kurz im Konferenzraum.

5.4. Not a rigid rule

At B2, you need to understand deviations. Information structure, focus, pronouns, object order, and closeness to the verb can be more important than TeKaMoLo.

Examples:

Im Büro arbeite ich heute besonders konzentriert.

6.5. The four categories

Temporal answers when?, causal why?, manner how? / by what means?, and local where? / where to? / where from?.

Temporal → wann? wie lange? wie oft?
Kausal → warum? aus welchem Grund?
Modal → wie? womit? auf welche Weise?
Lokal → wo? wohin? woher?

7.6. Several adverbials in one sentence

The more adverbials occur together, the more important a clear default order becomes.

Examples:

Ich fahre morgen wegen des Wetters vorsichtig durch die Berge.

8.7. TeKaMoLo and the verbal bracket

With the perfect tense, modal verbs, and separable verbs, adverbials usually stand inside the verbal bracket before the right verbal element.

Examples:

Ich habe gestern wegen des Wetters vorsichtig gearbeitet.

9.8. Information structure as a second system

Alongside TeKaMoLo, the distinction between given and new information also matters. Given information often occurs earlier; new or focused information later.

Examples:

In Berlin arbeitet sie seit Jahren sehr erfolgreich.

10.9. Topic and focus

The topic often occurs earlier in the sentence; focus is often farther to the right. Therefore, a local topic can precede a temporal adverbial.

Examples:

In München arbeitet er seit Januar für ein neues Unternehmen.

11.10. B2 goal

The goal is not to apply a template mechanically, but to distinguish neutral order from motivated deviation.

Examples:

TeKaMoLo als Startpunkt, Kontext als Korrektiv.

12.11. Temporal: typical expressions

Temporal adverbials include point in time, duration, frequency, and temporal framing.

Examples:

heute

seit drei Tagen

jeden Morgen

im nächsten Jahr

13.12. Time expressions often come early

In neutral middle-field structures, time often precedes cause, manner, and place.

Examples:

Ich arbeite heute wegen der Frist konzentriert zu Hause.

14.13. Several time expressions

With several temporal expressions, the more general or framing expression often precedes the more specific one.

Examples:

Ich arbeite diese Woche jeden Morgen zwei Stunden im Büro.

15.14. Frequency as a temporal adverbial

Adverbs such as oft, selten, regelmäßig, and manchmal belong functionally to the temporal domain but are flexible because they are short.

Examples:

Wir arbeiten oft sehr konzentriert im Lesesaal.

16.15. Duration

Duration expressions can be closely linked to the verb and therefore occur later than a framing time expression.

Examples:

Wir haben gestern zwei Stunden im Labor gearbeitet.

17.16. Time in the first position

Temporal adverbials often occupy the first position when temporal orientation serves as the topic of the sentence.

Examples:

Morgen fahre ich wegen des Streiks mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit.

18.17. Time as contrastive focus

When the time itself is contrasted, it can deliberately occur later or directly after nicht.

Examples:

Wir treffen uns nicht heute, sondern morgen im Büro.

19.18. Temporal is not always first in the middle field

A topical object or pronoun can precede the time expression. TeKaMoLo primarily orders adverbials relative to one another.

Examples:

Ich habe ihn gestern wegen der Besprechung kurz angerufen.

20.19. Causal: typical expressions

Causal adverbials express cause or reason, often with wegen, aufgrund, aus, vor, or adverbial expressions.

Examples:

wegen des Wetters

aufgrund der Verzögerung

aus Angst

21.20. Causal after temporal

In neutral TeKaMoLo order, the reason follows the time expression.

Examples:

Wir bleiben heute wegen des Sturms zu Hause.

22.21. Causal before manner

The reason often precedes the manner expression in neutral order.

Examples:

Sie arbeitet wegen der Deadline besonders konzentriert.

23.22. Causal in first position

When the reason is thematically important, the causal phrase can move to the first position.

Examples:

Wegen des Sturms bleiben wir heute zu Hause.

24.23. Given reason often comes earlier

An already mentioned reason can occur early because it is topical and given.

Examples:

Wegen dieses Problems müssen wir heute anders planen.

25.24. A new reason can be focused later

When the cause is the main new information, it can occur later in the sentence or be highlighted contrastively.

Examples:

Er ist heute nicht wegen des Wetters zu Hause geblieben, sondern wegen seiner Erkältung.

26.25. Causal phrases and negation

When nicht stands directly before a causal phrase, it often negates that reason specifically.

Examples:

Sie hat nicht wegen des Geldes gekündigt.

27.26. Nominal and clause-based reasons

TeKaMoLo mainly concerns constituents in the middle field. A full weil or da clause is organized as a clause of its own rather than as a simple TeKaMoLo element.

Examples:

Wir bleiben heute zu Hause, weil es stark regnet.

28.27. Manner: typical expressions

Manner adverbials describe how an action is carried out, including means, instrument, intensity, or method.

Examples:

schnell

mit dem Fahrrad

auf diese Weise

sehr sorgfältig

29.28. Manner after causal

In the neutral default order, manner typically follows cause.

Examples:

Ich fahre heute wegen des Streiks mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit.

30.29. Short manner adverbs

Short words such as gern, schnell, gut, and vorsichtig can occur relatively late because of their close connection to the verb.

Examples:

Sie arbeitet heute im Büro sehr konzentriert.

31.30. Instrument with mit

mit + dative can be manner when the phrase expresses the means or instrument of the action.

Examples:

Wir fahren morgen mit dem Zug nach Hamburg.

32.31. Not every mit phrase is manner

mit can also express accompaniment. In that case, its semantic classification is different and position depends more strongly on information structure.

Examples:

Ich fahre morgen mit meiner Kollegin nach Berlin.

33.32. Manner often close to the verb

Because manner adverbials directly describe how the action is carried out, they often stand closer to the verbal core than time and cause.

Examples:

Er hat gestern wegen der Kontrolle sehr sorgfältig gearbeitet.

34.33. Manner as focus

When the manner is new or contrastive, it can occur especially late.

Examples:

Sie hat den Bericht gestern nicht oberflächlich, sondern sehr gründlich geprüft.

35.34. Manner in first position

Manner adverbials can also move to the first position when the manner itself is the topic or contrast.

Examples:

Mit großer Sorgfalt hat sie den Bericht gestern geprüft.

36.35. Manner and degree

Degree expressions such as sehr, besonders, and relativ stay close to the element whose intensity they modify.

Examples:

Sie arbeitet heute besonders konzentriert im Büro.

37.36. Manner can follow local

With focus or close verb integration, a manner adverbial can also follow a local phrase. This is a typical B2 deviation from the default formula.

Examples:

Im Büro arbeitet sie heute besonders konzentriert.

38.37. Local: typical expressions

Local adverbials express place, direction, or origin.

Examples:

im Büro

nach Berlin

aus München

zu Hause

39.38. Local often comes late neutrally

In neutral TeKaMoLo order, the local expression often occurs farthest to the right.

Examples:

Wir arbeiten heute wegen der Frist konzentriert im Büro.

40.39. Distinguishing place and direction

Both where? and where to? belong to the local domain, but they can differ in how closely they are linked to the verb.

Examples:

Wir arbeiten im Büro.

Wir fahren nach Berlin.

41.40. Direction often closely linked to motion verbs

With motion verbs, the directional phrase often forms a particularly close semantic unit with the verb.

Examples:

Ich fahre morgen mit dem Zug nach Berlin.

42.41. Local phrase as topic

A place can serve as an established topic and occur early, even before temporal expressions.

Examples:

In Berlin arbeitet sie seit drei Jahren für ein Start-up.

43.42. Local phrase in first position

The first position is especially suitable for setting a place or direction as the frame.

Examples:

Im Büro bespreche ich morgen die neuen Zahlen.

44.43. Local as contrast

When the place is contrasted, it can stand directly after nicht.

Examples:

Wir treffen uns nicht im Büro, sondern im Café.

45.44. Several local expressions

With several local expressions, order often moves from a broader to a more specific place or from origin to destination.

Examples:

Er fährt aus Frankfurt über Köln nach Brüssel.

46.45. Local phrase vs verb-preposition complement

Not every prepositional phrase is a free local adverbial. In fixed verb-preposition combinations, the phrase belongs to the verb's valency and follows different ordering principles.

Examples:

Wir warten heute lange auf den Bus.

47.46. Local is often a focus position

The right side of the middle field is well suited to new location information. This is why a neutral local phrase often sounds natural there.

Examples:

Wir treffen uns morgen wegen der Planung im neuen Büro.

48.47. TeKaMoLo does not order every constituent

The formula primarily describes adverbials. Subjects, pronouns, and objects follow additional rules.

Examples:

Ich habe ihm gestern wegen der Frist die Datei geschickt.

49.48. Unstressed pronouns occur early

Unstressed personal pronouns typically precede longer adverbials in the middle field.

Examples:

Ich habe ihn gestern im Büro gesehen.

50.49. Several pronouns

When several unstressed pronouns occur, they usually stand very early in the middle field. Their exact order belongs to object ordering, not TeKaMoLo.

Examples:

Ich habe es ihm gestern erklärt.

51.50. Definite objects

Given or definite objects often occur earlier than new focused adverbial information.

Examples:

Ich habe den Bericht gestern im Büro gelesen.

52.51. Indefinite objects

New or indefinite objects can occur relatively late, especially when they carry information focus.

Examples:

Ich habe gestern im Büro einen interessanten Bericht gelesen.

53.52. Dative object and adverbials

A pronominal or given dative object often precedes temporal-causal-manner-local adverbials.

Examples:

Ich habe ihm gestern wegen des Problems ausführlich im Büro geantwortet.

54.53. Accusative object and TeKaMoLo

The position of an accusative object depends strongly on whether it is given, pronominal, definite, or new.

Examples:

Ich habe den Vertrag gestern sorgfältig im Büro geprüft.

55.54. Information structure can override the simple formula

A given object can precede the adverbials, while a new object may appear farther to the right.

Examples:

Ich habe gestern im Büro einen neuen Kollegen getroffen.

56.55. Heavy constituents tend to occur later

Long noun or prepositional phrases often occur farther to the right for processing reasons.

Examples:

Wir haben gestern im Büro über die langfristigen Folgen der neuen Regelung gesprochen.

57.56. Light constituents tend to occur earlier

Short pronouns and adverbs can occur early without making the neutral sentence structure feel heavy.

Examples:

Ich habe ihn heute dort gesehen.

With certain verbs, the object and a directional or local phrase together form a close semantic unit.

Examples:

Sie legt die Unterlagen heute sorgfältig auf den Tisch.

59.58. B2: several systems operate at once

Natural German word order results from the interaction of TeKaMoLo, pronoun order, object status, constituent weight, and focus.

Examples:

Ich habe ihm den Bericht gestern wegen der Frist schnell im Büro gezeigt.

60.59. Perfect tense

In the perfect tense, middle-field elements stand between the finite auxiliary and the past participle.

Examples:

Wir haben gestern wegen des Wetters vorsichtig gearbeitet.

61.60. Modal verb

With a modal verb, adverbials stand between the finite modal and the lexical infinitive.

Examples:

Wir müssen morgen wegen der Frist konzentriert im Büro arbeiten.

62.61. Separable verb

With separable verbs, the adverbials occur before the separated verbal particle.

Examples:

Wir kommen morgen wegen des Termins früh im Büro an.

63.62. Subordinate clause

In subordinate clauses, the finite verbal complex stands at the end. The relative order of middle-field constituents can still follow the same information-structural principles.

Examples:

..., weil wir morgen wegen der Frist konzentriert im Büro arbeiten müssen.

64.63. Relative clause

The same basic adverbial tendencies remain in relative clauses even though the verbal complex is final.

Examples:

Das ist das Büro, in dem wir morgen wegen der Frist konzentriert arbeiten müssen.

65.64. Infinitive clause

In infinitive clauses, time, cause, manner, and place are also ordered according to information structure; the zu infinitive stands at the end.

Examples:

Wir versuchen, morgen wegen der Frist konzentriert im Büro zu arbeiten.

66.65. Passive voice

In the passive, the verb form changes, but the basic logic of adverbial ordering remains.

Examples:

Der Bericht wird morgen wegen der Frist sorgfältig im Büro geprüft.

67.66. Passive with a modal verb

Even long right verbal complexes do not change the fact that middle-field constituents stand before them.

Examples:

Der Bericht muss morgen wegen der Frist sorgfältig im Büro geprüft werden.

68.67. Fronting does not change the basic function

An adverbial can move to the first position without losing its semantic category.

Examples:

Wegen des Wetters fahren wir morgen mit dem Zug nach Berlin.

69.68. One constituent in the first position

In German declarative clauses, normally one constituent occupies the first position. Complex phrases can count as one unit.

Examples:

Mit dem Zug nach Berlin fahren wir morgen nicht.

70.69. nicht and TeKaMoLo

The position of nicht follows negation scope and can therefore alter the apparent TeKaMoLo order.

Examples:

Wir fahren morgen wegen des Streiks nicht mit dem Auto zur Arbeit.

71.70. Contrastive negation

When nicht stands directly before an adverbial, that adverbial is often specifically contrasted.

Examples:

Wir fahren morgen nicht mit dem Auto, sondern mit dem Zug zur Arbeit.

72.71. Sentence stress and word order

Spoken German can use stress to mark additional focus differences. Written German relies more heavily on word order and context.

Examples:

Ich fahre MORGEN mit dem Zug nach Berlin.

73.72. Neutrality vs emphasis

The default TeKaMoLo order is especially suitable for neutral information; deviations often create topical or contrastive effects.

Examples:

Heute arbeite ich wegen der Frist konzentriert im Büro.

74.73. Typical error: treating TeKaMoLo as absolute

Rigid application can sound unnatural if pronouns, given objects, or focus are ignored.

Examples:

Natürlich: Ich habe ihn gestern im Büro gesehen.

75.74. Typical error: misclassifying a prepositional phrase

A prepositional phrase can be causal, manner, local, or verb-governed. The preposition alone does not determine the category.

Examples:

mit dem Bus → modal

mit meiner Kollegin → Begleitung

76.75. Typical error: ignoring focus

When an adverbial is contrasted or new, a different order may be more natural than the neutral default.

Examples:

Im Büro arbeitet sie heute BESONDERS konzentriert.

77.76. Analysis algorithm

A reliable B2 procedure combines semantic category and information structure.

1. Adverbiale Angaben identifizieren.
2. Temporal / Kausal / Modal / Lokal zuordnen.
3. Neutrale Grundfolge TeKaMoLo bilden.
4. Pronomen und bekannte Objekte früh berücksichtigen.
5. Neue / fokussierte / schwere Elemente eher später setzen.
6. Verbnahe Ergänzungen prüfen.
7. Bei Kontrast bewusst abweichen.

78.77. What to remember

At B2, TeKaMoLo is an orientation system, not an exception-free algorithm. Natural middle-field order results from the combination of default order, constituent weight, verb valency, topic, and focus.

neutral: Temporal → Kausal → Modal → Lokal
Pronomen → meist früh
bekannte Elemente → eher früh
neue / schwere / fokussierte Elemente → eher spät
verbnahe Elemente → oft näher am rechten Verbteil
Vorfeld / Kontrast → Reihenfolge kann bewusst verändert werden

79.Summary

The neutral orientation:

Temporal → Causal → Manner → Local
when? why? how? where/to where?

Example:

Ich fahre morgen wegen des Streiks mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit.
           T C M L

At B2, however, also remember:

pronouns → usually early
given / topical elements → tend to be early
new / heavy / focused items → tend to be later
verb-related complements → often closer to the right verbal element
contrast → can change the default order

Typical neutral structure:

subject / pronoun / given object
→ Temporal
→ Causal
→ Manner
→ Local
→ right verbal element

TeKaMoLo is an excellent starting point. Natural German, however, comes from the interaction of default order, information structure, and closeness to the verb.
