nachdem and Sequence in the Past

Learn and practise: nachdem and Sequence in the Past.

1.What this page explains

nachdem is a temporal conjunction. It connects two events and shows that one event happens before the other.

Typical example:

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren.

The sequence is:

1. Ich hatte gegessen.
2. Ich ging spazieren.

The central B1 idea:

earlier action
→ nachdem + Plusquamperfekt

later action
→ Präteritum or Perfekt

nachdem is especially useful in narration because it expresses chronological sequence clearly and compactly.

1. What does nachdem mean?

nachdem means roughly:

after the point when something happened

It answers:

When does the second action happen?

Example:

Nachdem der Kurs zu Ende war, gingen wir noch etwas trinken.

2. The nachdem clause normally names the earlier event

This is the most important meaning rule.

Nachdem ich die E-Mail gelesen hatte, antwortete ich.

In time:

first:
read the email

afterwards:
reply

3. The basic structure

Very common:

Nachdem + subordinate clause, main clause.

Example:

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte,
ging ich spazieren.

Also possible:

main clause, nachdem + subordinate clause.

Example:

Ich ging spazieren,
nachdem ich gegessen hatte.

4. nachdem is a subordinating conjunction

This means:

The finite verb stands at the end of the nachdem clause.

Example:

nachdem ich gegessen hatte

Not:

❌ nachdem ich hatte gegessen

5. The typical past narrative pattern

For a clear past narrative, a very common pattern is:

nachdem + Plusquamperfekt
+
Präteritum / Perfekt

Example:

Nachdem wir bezahlt hatten, verließen wir das Restaurant.

6. Why is the Plusquamperfekt often used?

The Plusquamperfekt shows:

This action had already been completed
before the next past action happened.

Example:

Nachdem ich den Bericht geschrieben hatte, schickte ich ihn an meine Chefin.

7. A timeline

write report -------- send report -------- now
     ↑ ↑
Plusquamperfekt Präteritum

With nachdem:

Nachdem ich den Bericht geschrieben hatte,
schickte ich ihn.

8. nachdem with haben

Most verbs form the Plusquamperfekt with hatte.

Examples:

Nachdem ich gefrühstückt hatte, fuhr ich zur Arbeit.

Nachdem wir die Tickets gekauft hatten, gingen wir zum Bahnsteig.

Nachdem sie den Text gelesen hatte, verstand sie die Aufgabe besser.

9. nachdem with sein

Verbs that use sein in the Perfekt use war in the Plusquamperfekt.

Examples:

Nachdem wir angekommen waren, riefen wir unsere Freunde an.

Nachdem er aufgestanden war, machte er Kaffee.

Nachdem die Gäste gegangen waren, räumten wir auf.

10. The verb group in the subordinate clause

With the Plusquamperfekt, the end contains:

Partizip II + hatte / war

Examples:

..., nachdem ich gegessen hatte.
..., nachdem wir angekommen waren.
..., nachdem sie angerufen hatte.

11. When the nachdem clause comes first

Example:

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren.

The whole subordinate clause occupies position 1.

So the finite verb of the main clause follows directly:

..., ging ich ...

Not:

❌ ..., ich ging ...

12. When the main clause comes first

Also possible:

Ich ging spazieren, nachdem ich gegessen hatte.

The main clause keeps normal word order:

Ich ging ...

Then the subordinate clause follows.

13. Sentence order and time order are not the same

Compare:

Ich war erleichtert,
nachdem ich die Prüfung bestanden hatte.

The main clause appears first in the sentence.

But in time, this happens first:

pass the exam

and afterwards:

feel relieved

14. The comma

A comma separates the main clause and the nachdem subordinate clause.

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren.

or:

Ich ging spazieren, nachdem ich gegessen hatte.

The comma is part of the structure.

15. nachdem and danach

Do not confuse these words.

nachdem
→ conjunction
→ introduces a subordinate clause
danach
→ adverb
→ appears in a main clause

Compare:

Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, gingen wir spazieren.
Wir aßen. Danach gingen wir spazieren.

16. Word order with danach

When danach is in position 1:

Danach gingen wir spazieren.

Structure:

Danach | gingen | wir | spazieren.

This is normal main-clause word order.

17. dann and nachdem

dann can also mean “then”.

Example:

Wir aßen und dann gingen wir spazieren.

With nachdem:

Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, gingen wir spazieren.

nachdem marks the relationship between the two events more explicitly in grammar.

18. Must the Plusquamperfekt always follow nachdem?

No.

The tense depends on the whole time context.

For a past narrative, however, the pattern

nachdem + Plusquamperfekt

is especially important and common.

19. Present context: nachdem + Perfekt

Example:

Nachdem ich die Arbeit beendet habe, gehe ich nach Hause.

Here the Perfekt means:

The first action is completed
before the second begins.

20. Future meaning with present tense

German often uses the present tense for future plans.

Nachdem wir angekommen sind, rufen wir dich an.

In time:

1. arrive
2. call

Both events can still be in the future.

21. Past narrative with Präteritum

Very common in written narration:

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren.

hatte gegessen
→ earlier past

ging
→ later narrative action

22. Past narrative with Perfekt

In spoken German, this is also possible:

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, bin ich spazieren gegangen.

hatte gegessen
→ earlier

bin gegangen
→ later

23. schon in the nachdem clause

schon can additionally emphasize that something was already complete.

Nachdem wir schon gegessen hatten, bestellten die anderen noch etwas.

schon is possible but not required, because nachdem already marks the sequence.

24. erst nachdem

erst nachdem means:

not earlier,
only after this event

Example:

Erst nachdem ich die Anleitung gelesen hatte, verstand ich das Gerät.

25. kurz nachdem

kurz nachdem shows a short time interval.

Kurz nachdem wir angekommen waren, begann es zu regnen.

arrival
→ short interval
→ rain

26. lange nachdem

lange nachdem shows a longer interval.

Lange nachdem er die Firma verlassen hatte, sprach man noch über seine Projekte.

27. Same subject

The subjects can be the same.

Nachdem ich geduscht hatte, zog ich mich an.

ich → shower
ich → get dressed

28. Different subjects

The subjects can also be different.

Nachdem Anna gegangen war, begann die Besprechung.

Anna → leaves
the meeting → begins

This is different from structures such as um ... zu.

29. Reflexive verbs

The reflexive pronoun remains.

Nachdem ich mich vorbereitet hatte, fühlte ich mich sicherer.

Structure:

nachdem ich mich vorbereitet hatte

30. Separable verbs

Example:

einkaufen
→ eingekauft
→ hatte eingekauft

In a sentence:

Nachdem ich eingekauft hatte, fuhr ich nach Hause.

31. Verbs ending in -ieren

Example:

organisieren
→ organisiert
→ hatte organisiert

Nachdem wir alles organisiert hatten, konnten die Gäste kommen.

32. Irregular participles

The normal Plusquamperfekt rules still apply.

lesen → gelesen
finden → gefunden
nehmen → genommen
schreiben → geschrieben

Example:

Nachdem ich den Schlüssel gefunden hatte, konnte ich endlich losfahren.

33. nachdem and bevor

Compare:

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte,
ging ich spazieren.

and:

Bevor ich spazieren ging,
hatte ich gegessen.

The real events can be the same.

The perspective changes:

nachdem
→ looking forward from the earlier event

bevor
→ looking back from the later event

34. nachdem and als

als often gives a one-time past point or frame.

Als ich nach Hause kam,
hatte meine Familie schon gegessen.

nachdem more strongly marks a sequence:

Nachdem meine Familie gegessen hatte,
räumten wir gemeinsam auf.

35. nachdem and weil

nachdem primarily expresses time:

first A
→ then B

weil primarily expresses reason:

B happens
→ because A

Compare:

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren.

Ich ging spazieren, weil das Wetter schön war.

36. Time sequence can also explain something

Sometimes a causal meaning is also present.

Nachdem ich die ganze Nacht gearbeitet hatte, war ich am Morgen sehr müde.

Grammatically:

time sequence

In meaning:

the earlier action also explains the later state

37. nachdem in travel stories

Nachdem wir im Hotel eingecheckt hatten, gingen wir direkt in die Altstadt.

Sequence:

1. check in
2. go to the old town

This is very typical in travel narratives.

38. nachdem at work

Nachdem wir die Ergebnisse geprüft hatten, schickten wir den Bericht an die Leitung.

The structure makes the process clear:

check
→ send

39. nachdem in biographies

Nachdem sie ihr Studium abgeschlossen hatte, zog sie nach München.

This lets you connect different phases of a person's life.

40. nachdem in everyday stories

Nachdem ich die Haustür abgeschlossen hatte, merkte ich, dass mein Schlüssel noch drinnen lag.

The structure is useful for explaining how a situation developed.

41. nachdem in reports

Example with a more complex structure:

Nachdem das System neu gestartet worden war, funktionierte die Anwendung wieder.

The nachdem clause contains a passive Plusquamperfekt.

At B1, the main goal is to recognize the time relationship.

42. Passive in a nachdem clause

Active:

Nachdem der Techniker das Gerät repariert hatte, ...

Passive:

Nachdem das Gerät repariert worden war, ...

The passive form is more complex, but the principle remains:

repair first
→ next action afterwards

43. Several actions in the nachdem clause

Example:

Nachdem wir die Koffer gepackt, das Hotel bezahlt und ein Taxi bestellt hatten, fuhren wir zum Flughafen.

hatten belongs to all three participles:

gepackt
bezahlt
bestellt

44. Continuing a narrative

Example:

Nachdem wir angekommen waren,
checkten wir im Hotel ein.

Danach gingen wir spazieren.

Später aßen wir in einem Restaurant.

Am Abend fuhren wir zurück.

This creates a natural chronological text.

45. Do not begin every sentence with nachdem

A good B1 text varies its time connectors.

Useful words:

nachdem
danach
dann
später
anschließend
zuerst
am nächsten Tag
schließlich

nachdem is one tool among several.

46. Common mistakes

2.Mistake 1: wrong verb position

❌ Nachdem ich hatte gegessen, ...
✅ Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ...

3.Mistake 2: wrong main-clause order after the subordinate clause

❌ Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ich ging spazieren.
✅ Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren.

4.Mistake 3: confusing nachdem and danach

nachdem + subordinate clause
danach + main clause

5.Mistake 4: misunderstanding the event order

The nachdem clause normally names the earlier event.

6.Mistake 5: automatically using the Plusquamperfekt in every context

The tense depends on the entire time context.

47. A useful construction algorithm

Starting point:

Ich aß.
Danach ging ich spazieren.

Step 1: find the earlier action

essen

Step 2: in a past narrative, form the Plusquamperfekt

ich hatte gegessen

Step 3: add nachdem

nachdem ich gegessen hatte

Step 4: connect the later action

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte,
ging ich spazieren.

48. What to remember

Core idea:

nachdem
→ time sequence
→ the nachdem clause normally names the earlier event

Typical B1 past pattern:

Nachdem + Plusquamperfekt,
Präteritum / Perfekt.

Examples:

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte,
ging ich spazieren.

Nachdem wir angekommen waren,
riefen wir Anna an.

Especially important:

  • nachdem is a subordinating temporal conjunction.
  • The finite verb stands at the end of the subordinate clause.
  • In the Plusquamperfekt: Partizip II + hatte/war.
  • If the nachdem clause comes first, the finite verb of the main clause follows immediately.
  • The nachdem clause normally describes the earlier action.
  • nachdem and danach are grammatically different.
  • erst nachdem, kurz nachdem and lange nachdem make the relation more precise.
  • The Plusquamperfekt is especially common in past narratives.
  • In present or future sequences, the nachdem clause can use the Perfekt.
  • Good narratives combine nachdem with danach, später, anschließend and other time expressions.
  • The following topic expands these temporal relations with bevor and seitdem.

7.Summary

Core idea:

A happens first.
B happens afterwards.

With nachdem:

Nachdem A passiert war,
passierte B.

Typical:

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte,
ging ich spazieren.

With sein:

Nachdem wir angekommen waren,
riefen wir Anna an.

Difference:

nachdem + subordinate clause
danach + main clause

The key idea is:

nachdem connects two events and normally marks the event that happens first.
