10.The comma is part of the structure
In the um ... zu construction the comma separates the main action from the purpose; it is not only stylistic.
11.Where um stands
um stands at the start of the purpose group: um Zeit zu sparen, um Deutsch zu lernen, um ein Ticket zu kaufen. It marks the beginning of the purpose.
12.Where zu stands
With a simple verb, zu stands directly before the infinitive: lernen → zu lernen, kaufen → zu kaufen, arbeiten → zu arbeiten, sparen → zu sparen.
13.The purpose group often stands at the end

The whole um ... zu construction takes position 1. Immediately after the comma comes the finite verb of the main clause.
| Incorrect | Correct |
|---|---|
Um Geld zu sparen, ich koche zu Hause. | Um Geld zu sparen, koche ich zu Hause. |
16.Why the verb follows the comma immediately

56.Three check questions
Before choosing um ... zu, three checks help:
- Is the second action a purpose?
- Is the logical subject the same?
- Can the second action be expressed as an infinitive?
If all three fit, um ... zu is usually the right pattern. Key points: um ... zu = purpose on Wozu?; the subject is usually the same and not repeated; a comma stands before the group; with simple verbs zu stands before the infinitive, with separable verbs inside (anzukommen); reflexive pronouns are kept; a negative purpose is often um nicht ... zu; with modal verbs forms like arbeiten zu können appear; with different subjects damit is usually used; weil names a reason.
