1.Partizip II with separable and inseparable prefixes
At A2 it helps to separate two questions: is the prefix separable or inseparable, and is the verb itself regular, strong/irregular or mixed? The first mainly decides whether ge- appears and where it stands. The second decides whether Partizip II usually ends in -t or -en and whether the stem changes.
| Type | Model |
|---|---|
| separable prefix | prefix + ge + stem + ending |
| inseparable prefix | no extra ge- |
| Infinitiv | Partizip II |
|---|---|
aufmachen | aufgemacht |
einkaufen | eingekauft |
aufstehen | aufgestanden |
besuchen | besucht |
verkaufen | verkauft |
verstehen | verstanden |
2.Why prefixes matter for Partizip II
Many frequent German verbs consist of prefix + verb: auf + machen → aufmachen, ein + kaufen → einkaufen, ver + kaufen → verkaufen, be + suchen → besuchen.
In Präsens separable verbs split the prefix; inseparable ones keep it attached. That difference still matters for Partizip II.
3.Short review: ordinary Partizip II
Without a prefix, a regular Partizip II often looks like ge + stem + t: machen → gemacht, lernen → gelernt, fragen → gefragt. Many strong verbs follow ge + stem + en: sehen → gesehen, fahren → gefahren, schreiben → geschrieben. With prefixes the basic system stays, but the place or presence of ge- changes.
4.Overall map
| Verb type | Basic model | Example |
|---|---|---|
| no prefix | ge- at the start | machen → gemacht |
| separable prefix | ge- between prefix and stem | aufmachen → aufgemacht |
| inseparable prefix | no extra ge- | besuchen → besucht |
This is the main orientation map for the topic. At A2 it matters to recognise frequent separable and fixed inseparable prefixes, put ge- in the right place, not force strong forms into fake regular ones, learn tricky verbs as wholes, and keep Partizip II separate from the haben/sein choice.
5.What a separable prefix is
A separable prefix stands before the verb in the infinitive, but separates in some clause forms: aufmachen, einkaufen, abholen, mitkommen, zurückfahren.
Stress usually falls on the prefix: AUFmachen, EINkaufen, ABholen, MITkommen. Stress is a strong clue that the prefix is separable.
6.Frequent separable prefixes
Especially common at A2: ab-, an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, nach-, vor-, weg-, zu-, zurück-, zusammen-.
| Infinitiv | Meaning |
|---|---|
abholen | pick up |
anfangen | begin |
aufstehen | get up |
ausgehen | go out |
einkaufen | go shopping |
mitkommen | come along |
nachfragen | ask again / check |
vorbereiten | prepare |
wegfahren | drive away |
zumachen | close |
zurückkommen | come back |
zusammenarbeiten | work together |
A similar word start does not automatically mean the same behaviour. Learn the concrete verb as one construction.
7.Regular separable Partizip II
With a separable verb the prefix is placed in front of the base verb’s Partizip II.
With simple regular base verbs that usually yields: prefix + ge + stem + t.
| Infinitiv | Partizip II |
|---|---|
aufmachen | aufgemacht |
einkaufen | eingekauft |
abholen | abgeholt |
zumachen | zugemacht |
auspacken | ausgepackt |
You can split the form mentally: auf + gemacht → aufgemacht, ein + gekauft → eingekauft. This matters because not every base verb itself has ge-. If its Partizip II has no ge-, the separable prefix does not create one: bereiten → bereitet, vorbereiten → vorbereitet. Here vor- is separable, but base bereiten already starts with inseparable be-.
8.Why aufgemacht, not geaufmacht
The prefix stays in front. ge- is not put before the whole verb; it sits between prefix and stem. This is one of the most frequent separable-verb mistakes.
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
geaufmacht | aufgemacht |
geeinkauft | eingekauft |
geabholt | abgeholt |
9.Regular separable examples
| Infinitiv | Partizip II | Example |
|---|---|---|
aufmachen | aufgemacht | Ich habe das Fenster aufgemacht. |
einkaufen | eingekauft | Wir haben im Supermarkt eingekauft. |
abholen | abgeholt | Sie hat mich am Bahnhof abgeholt. |
zumachen | zugemacht | Er hat die Tür zugemacht. |
auspacken | ausgepackt | Wir haben die Koffer ausgepackt. |
The prefix always stands before ge-.
10.Strong separable verbs
Strong verbs can also take separable prefixes. ge- still stands between prefix and stem, but Partizip II usually ends in -en. The stem may change. Basic model: prefix + ge + stem + en.
| Infinitiv | Partizip II |
|---|---|
aufstehen | aufgestanden |
mitkommen | mitgekommen |
zurückfahren | zurückgefahren |
einladen | eingeladen |
anfangen | angefangen |
11.Strong examples
The prefix shows where ge- belongs. The strong-verb type decides stem and ending.
12.The prefix does not choose -t or -en
A frequent wrong idea is “separable prefix = always -t”. That is false. The prefix decides the position of ge-. The choice of -t or -en depends on the verb type itself.
| Infinitiv | Partizip II |
|---|---|
aufmachen | aufgemacht |
aufstehen | aufgestanden |
einkaufen | eingekauft |
einladen | eingeladen |
13.Mixed and special forms
Some verbs are neither fully regular nor fully strong: mitbringen → mitgebracht, zurückbringen → zurückgebracht, kennenlernen → kennengelernt. Base bringen has irregular gebracht; with a separable prefix: mit + gebracht → mitgebracht. Such forms are best learned in word families.
14.What an inseparable prefix is
An inseparable prefix always stays attached: besuchen, bezahlen, verkaufen, verstehen, erzählen, entdecken, zerstören. Nothing splits off in the main clause. Stress usually does not fall on that prefix.
15.Main inseparable prefixes
Classic set: be-, emp-, ent-, er-, ge-, miss-, ver-, zer-. With these prefixes Partizip II usually gets no extra ge-.
| Prefix | Verb | Partizip II |
|---|---|---|
be- | besuchen | besucht |
emp- | empfehlen | empfohlen |
ent- | entdecken | entdeckt |
er- | erzählen | erzählt |
ge- | gehören | gehört |
miss- | missverstehen | missverstanden |
ver- | verkaufen | verkauft |
zer- | zerstören | zerstört |
16.The no-ge- rule for inseparable prefixes
With inseparable prefixes no extra
ge-is inserted.
| Right | Wrong |
|---|---|
besucht | gebesucht |
verkauft | geverkauft |
erzählt | geerzählt |
verstanden | geverstanden |
bekommen | — |
17.Regular inseparable verbs
Regular verbs usually keep the -t ending, but without ge-. The prefix does not necessarily change the regular type — it mainly blocks extra ge-.
| Without prefix | With inseparable |
|---|---|
kaufen → gekauft | verkaufen → verkauft |
zahlen → gezahlt | bezahlen → bezahlt |
decken → gedeckt | entdecken → entdeckt |
18.Frequent regular examples
| Infinitiv | Partizip II |
|---|---|
besuchen | besucht |
bezahlen | bezahlt |
bestellen | bestellt |
erzählen | erzählt |
erklären | erklärt |
entdecken | entdeckt |
verkaufen | verkauft |
zerstören | zerstört |
19.Strong inseparable verbs
Inseparable verbs can also be strong. Then there is no ge-, and the form often ends in -en. Learn the irregular stem with the verb.
| Infinitiv | Partizip II |
|---|---|
verstehen | verstanden |
bekommen | bekommen |
beginnen | begonnen |
vergessen | vergessen |
entscheiden | entschieden |
empfehlen | empfohlen |
20.Strong inseparable examples
All of these show the “no extra ge-” rule clearly.
21.Three useful word families
kaufen
| Infinitiv | Partizip II |
|---|---|
kaufen | gekauft |
einkaufen | eingekauft |
verkaufen | verkauft |
ein- separable → ge- inside. ver- inseparable → no extra ge-.
stellen
| Infinitiv | Partizip II |
|---|---|
stellen | gestellt |
vorstellen | vorgestellt |
bestellen | bestellt |
Here vor- is separable. be- is inseparable.
kommen
| Infinitiv | Partizip II |
|---|---|
kommen | gekommen |
mitkommen | mitgekommen |
bekommen | bekommen |
These three forms show the whole system compactly.
22.Präsens helps with separability
If you are unsure, Präsens is a useful clue. If the prefix separates in a normal main clause, Partizip II usually puts ge- between prefix and stem.
| Type | Infinitiv | Präsens |
|---|---|---|
| separable | aufmachen | Ich mache die Tür auf. |
| inseparable | besuchen | Ich besuche meine Freundin. |
23.Stress as a clue
Typical separable verbs stress the prefix: AUFstehen, EINkaufen, ABholen, MITkommen. Fixed inseparable prefixes are usually unstressed: beSUchen, verSTEHen, erZÄHLen, entDECKen. Meaning + Präsens form + stress together is more reliable than any single clue.
24.Some prefixes can be both types
Not every prefix belongs forever to one group. Especially durch-, über-, um-, unter-, wieder- can be separable or inseparable depending on the concrete verb, meaning and stress. At A2 it is enough to know that this group exists and to check new verbs carefully — the same spelling start does not always mean the same grammar.
25.Clear contrast: umfahren
umfahren can have two meanings and two structures. Stressed separable UMfahren means to knock something over while driving; unstressed inseparable umFAHren means to drive around something. With some prefixes stress, meaning and grammar are linked; learn such verbs as whole units.
26.Another contrast: übersetzen
Frequent inseparable überSETZen means “translate a text”: Partizip II übersetzt. There is also separable über|setzen (e.g. cross over) → übergesetzt. For everyday A2 communication the form übersetzen → übersetzt matters most.
27.haben or sein
Prefix rules form only Partizip II. Choosing haben or sein is a separate question. eingekauft and aufgestanden both follow the separable pattern, but take different auxiliaries. So remember separately: what Partizip II looks like, and which auxiliary Perfekt needs.
28.Partizip II in a full Perfekt sentence
Inside Partizip II the prefixed verb stays together. In a main-clause Perfekt the full Partizip II usually stands at the end. Internal structure: ein + ge + kauf + t → eingekauft, ver + stand + en → verstanden. Inside Partizip II the form is not split again.
29.-ieren verbs: important preview
The next special group is verbs in -ieren. They also form Partizip II without ge-: studieren → studiert, telefonieren → telefoniert, reparieren → repariert. That is a separate rule. For prefixed verbs one link already matters: einstudieren → einstudiert — ein- is separable, but base studieren forms studiert without ge-, so not *eingestudiert. Likewise: bereiten → bereitet, vorbereiten → vorbereitet.
More precise principle: separable prefix + Partizip II of the base verb.
30.ge- already inside the verb
Some infinitives already begin with inseparable ge-: gehören → gehört, gelingen → gelungen, geschehen → geschehen. No second ge- is added — not *gegehört, not *gegelungen.
31.How dictionaries mark separable verbs
A dictionary may write auf|machen, ein|kaufen, mit|kommen — the line marks the split point. Others give the principal parts: aufmachen – machte auf – hat aufgemacht, mitkommen – kam mit – ist mitgekommen. For learning it is especially useful to store infinitive, Partizip II and auxiliary together.
32.A useful memory form
Instead of only the infinitive, remember a ready-made Perfekt unit — so you store prefix structure, Partizip II and auxiliary together.
| Not only | Better |
|---|---|
aufstehen | aufstehen – ist aufgestanden |
verkaufen | verkaufen – hat verkauft |
mitbringen | mitbringen – hat mitgebracht |
33.Mistake type 1: ge- before the whole separable verb
With separable verbs
ge-stands between prefix and stem.
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
geaufmacht | aufgemacht |
geeinkauft | eingekauft |
geabholt | abgeholt |
34.Mistake type 2: ge- with an inseparable prefix
be-,emp-,ent-,er-,ge-,miss-,ver-,zer-block extrage-.
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
gebesucht | besucht |
geverkauft | verkauft |
geverstanden | verstanden |
35.Mistake type 3: always using -t
A prefix rule alone is not enough for the ending. Strong verbs keep their own Partizip II model.
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
aufgesteht | aufgestanden |
mitgekommt | mitgekommen |
versteht (as Partizip II) | verstanden |
36.Mistake type 4: judging the type by spelling alone
Especially with durch-, über-, um-, unter-, wieder- you must learn the concrete verb. For frequent verbs it helps to store stress and at least one Präsens sentence together with Partizip II.
37.Compact choice algorithm
When you meet a new prefixed verb, this order helps:
- Is the prefix separable?
- If yes:
ge-between prefix and stem. If no and the prefix is inseparable: no extrage-. - Is the verb regular, strong or mixed?
- That decides stem and ending.
- For Perfekt, remember
habenorseinseparately.
This keeps several grammatical decisions from collapsing into one. The prefix mainly decides whether ge- appears and where; -t / -en and stem change depend on the verb type itself.
