wenn — Conditions and Repeated Situations

wenn: conditions, repetition, future; verb-final; clause first; immer/jedes Mal; wenn vs als/falls/ob/wann/weil; separable, modals, Perfekt; Imperativ; build, read, three meaning questions.

1.Main meanings of wenn

At A2 three functions of wenn matter most: condition, repeated situation, and a future moment. The finite verb in a wenn clause stands at the end.

Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.
Wenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Kaffee.
Ich schreibe dir, wenn ich angekommen bin.
Ich rufe dich an, wenn ich zu Hause bin.
Wenn es regnet, fahren wir mit dem Bus.

2.wenn for conditions

Very often wenn means “if”. Logic: condition → possible result.

Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.

3.Answers “under what condition?”

You can ask mentally: under what condition will this happen? The full form joins result and condition.

Ich helfe dir, wenn ich Zeit habe.

4.wenn introduces a subordinate clause

wenn is a subordinating conjunction. So the finite verb stands at the end of the subordinate clause. Incorrect: wenn ich habe Zeit or wenn das Wetter ist gut.

wenn ich Zeit habe
wenn das Wetter gut ist
wenn der Bus kommt

5.Main clause + wenn

A very common structure: main clause, wenn subordinate clause.

Ich komme mit, wenn ich Zeit habe.
Wir gehen spazieren, wenn das Wetter schön ist.

6.wenn first, then the main-clause verb after the comma

The wenn part can come first. Important pattern: Wenn … verb, verb + subject …

Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.
Wenn das Wetter schön ist, gehen wir spazieren.

7.Why the verb stands right after the comma

The whole wenn clause occupies position 1 of the main clause. So the finite verb follows immediately. Correct: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit. Incorrect: Wenn ich Zeit habe, ich komme mit.

8.Comma

A comma separates main clause and wenn clause — in both orders. Without a comma is wrong.

Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.
Ich komme mit, wenn ich Zeit habe.

9.wenn for future situations

wenn is very common when talking about the future. German does not automatically require Futur I here.

Ich rufe dich an, wenn ich zu Hause bin.
Wenn der Kurs endet, gehen wir etwas essen.
Wir sprechen darüber, wenn Anna kommt.

10.Präsens can express the future

In German, Präsens is very often used for future situations. Both verbs are in Präsens, but the meaning is future. morgen and context point to the future.

Wenn ich morgen Zeit habe, komme ich vorbei.

11.Condition and future can overlap

A wenn clause can express a future moment and a condition at the same time. That is completely normal in German.

Wenn ich morgen früher fertig bin, komme ich zu dir.

12.wenn for repeated situations

wenn can mean “when” / “whenever”. This is not one specific case, but a typical repeated situation.

Wenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Kaffee.

13.immer wenn

To stress repetition, use immer wenn.

Immer wenn ich Urlaub habe, fahre ich ans Meer.
Ich werde nervös, immer wenn ich eine Prüfung habe.

14.jedes Mal, wenn

Another clear model: jedes Mal, wenn .... There is a comma after Mal.

Jedes Mal, wenn ich ihn sehe, erzählt er dieselbe Geschichte.

15.Repeated situations in the present

Here wenn describes typical or regular links.

Wenn ich früh aufstehe, bin ich abends müde.
Wenn es kalt ist, trage ich eine Jacke.
Wenn wir Besuch haben, koche ich viel.

16.Repeated situations in the past

Past repeated situations can also use wenn. For past repetitions, wenn is possible and very common.

Wenn ich als Kind krank war, blieb ich zu Hause.
Wir haben immer im Garten gespielt, wenn das Wetter schön war.

17.The difference between wenn and als

A key A2 contrast: one-time past situation → als; repeated situation → wenn.

Als ich gestern nach Hause kam, war es spät.
Wenn ich früher spät nach Hause kam, war meine Mutter noch wach.

18.als for a one-time past event

This refers to a specific past period or one-time past context. Do not use wenn if one specific past period is meant.

Als ich 18 war, zog ich nach Berlin.

19.wenn for past repetitions

Here wenn roughly means “every time when” — the situation was repeated.

Wenn ich als Kind Ferien hatte, war ich oft bei meinen Großeltern.

20.wenn with sein

Very common patterns with sein:

wenn ich müde bin
wenn du fertig bist
wenn das Wetter gut ist
wenn wir zu Hause sind
Wenn du fertig bist, können wir gehen.
Ich bleibe draußen, wenn das Wetter gut ist.

21.wenn with ordinary verbs

wenn ich arbeite
wenn sie lernt
wenn wir warten
wenn er kocht
Ich höre Musik, wenn ich arbeite.
Wenn sie lernt, braucht sie Ruhe.

22.wenn with separable verbs

In a subordinate clause the separable verb becomes one word again. Main clause: Ich stehe früh auf. Subordinate: wenn ich früh aufstehe — not wenn ich früh stehe auf.

Wenn ich früh aufstehe, frühstücke ich zu Hause.
Ich sage dir Bescheid, wenn ich dich anrufe.

Other forms: anrufen → wenn ich dich anrufe, einkaufen → wenn wir einkaufen, mitkommen → wenn sie mitkommt, aufmachen → wenn der Laden aufmacht.

23.wenn with modal verbs

With a modal verb, two verb forms stand at the end. Model: wenn + … + infinitive + modal verb.

wenn ich arbeiten muss
wenn wir fahren können
wenn sie früher gehen möchte
Wenn ich morgen arbeiten muss, stehe ich früh auf.
wenn ich länger bleiben muss
wenn du heute kommen kannst
wenn wir früher gehen wollen

24.wenn in Perfekt

A wenn clause can use Perfekt.

wenn ich angekommen bin
wenn wir gegessen haben
wenn sie die Arbeit beendet hat
Ich rufe dich an, wenn ich angekommen bin.
Wenn wir gegessen haben, gehen wir spazieren.

25.Perfekt in a future context

Perfekt in the wenn part often describes an action that must finish first: finish the work first, then go home.

Wenn ich die Arbeit beendet habe, gehe ich nach Hause.

26.wenn with Präteritum

Präteritum is also possible — especially for repeated past situations.

wenn ich müde war
wenn wir Zeit hatten
Wenn wir Zeit hatten, gingen wir ins Kino.

27.Negation in a wenn clause

wenn ich nicht arbeite
wenn du keine Zeit hast
wenn der Bus nicht kommt
Wenn der Bus nicht kommt, nehme ich ein Taxi.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, wenn ich keine Zeit habe.

28.Pronouns in a wenn clause

wenn ich ihn sehe
wenn sie mir schreibt
wenn wir es brauchen
Ich grüße Paul, wenn ich ihn sehe.
Wenn sie mir schreibt, antworte ich sofort.

29.wenn with reflexive verbs

wenn ich mich beeile
wenn sie sich freut
wenn wir uns treffen
Wenn wir uns treffen, trinken wir meistens Kaffee.

30.wenn with verb + preposition

wenn ich auf den Bus warte
wenn sie an ihre Familie denkt
wenn wir über das Problem sprechen
Ich höre Musik, wenn ich auf den Bus warte.

31.wenn and Imperativ in the main clause

A condition can combine with a request or prompt.

Ruf mich an, wenn du zu Hause bist.
Sag mir Bescheid, wenn du Hilfe brauchst.
Komm vorbei, wenn du Zeit hast.

32.wenn and falls

falls roughly means “if / in case”. It often sounds a little more hypothetical or uncertain than wenn. Both are possible; falls stresses more strongly that the condition may not be met.

Wenn du Zeit hast, komm vorbei.
Falls du Zeit hast, komm vorbei.

33.wenn and ob

wenn and ob are not interchangeable. wenn = condition / time point; ob = yes/no indirect question. ob is covered in detail in the article on indirect questions.

Wenn er kommt, beginnen wir.
Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt.

34.wenn and wann

wenn = condition / repetition / future situation; wann = a question about time. Indirectly: Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt.

Wann kommst du?
Ich rufe dich an, wenn ich komme.

35.wenn and weil

Both introduce a subordinate clause and send the verb to the end, but the function differs: weil = reason; wenn = condition / repetition / time.

weil ich müde bin
wenn ich müde bin

36.Same example, different meaning

With weil you name a reason (I am ill). With wenn you give a condition or typical pattern: if I am ill, I stay at home.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, wenn ich krank bin.

37.wenn and time markers

Very common are morgen, später, am Wochenende, immer, oft, jedes Mal.

Wenn ich morgen Zeit habe, komme ich vorbei.
Ich koche oft, wenn ich am Wochenende zu Hause bin.

38.Long wenn clauses

A subordinate clause can contain a lot of information; the verb still stays at the end.

wenn ich morgen nach der Arbeit noch genug Zeit habe
Wenn ich morgen nach der Arbeit noch genug Zeit habe, gehe ich einkaufen.

39.Two wenn clauses in one context

You can describe alternative conditions and contrast two possible situations.

Wenn das Wetter gut ist, gehen wir spazieren.
Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.

40.wenn in everyday situations

Typical topics: work, meetings, travel, health, weather, study, free time.

Wenn ich einen Termin habe, trage ich ihn in den Kalender ein.
Wenn es heiß ist, trinke ich viel Wasser.
Wenn ich verreise, reserviere ich das Hotel vorher.

41.Common mistakes

Main-clause order after wenn

IncorrectCorrect
wenn ich habe Zeitwenn ich Zeit habe

Forgetting the comma

IncorrectCorrect
Wenn ich Zeit habe komme ich mit.Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.

After initial wenn putting the subject before the verb

IncorrectCorrect
Wenn ich Zeit habe, ich komme mit.Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.

Splitting a separable verb

IncorrectCorrect
wenn ich früh stehe aufwenn ich früh aufstehe

Using wenn for any one-time past event

If one specific past event is meant, use als.

IncorrectCorrect
Wenn ich gestern nach Hause kam ...Als ich gestern nach Hause kam ...

42.A useful building algorithm

  1. Form the condition: Ich habe Zeit.
  2. Form the result: Ich komme mit.
  3. Add wenn: wenn ich Zeit ...
  4. Move the verb to the end: wenn ich Zeit habe
  5. Join the parts: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.

43.How to analyse when reading

Example: Wenn ich morgen früher mit der Arbeit fertig bin, komme ich noch bei dir vorbei.

First isolate the subordinate clause: wenn ich morgen früher mit der Arbeit fertig bin. Then the main clause: komme ich noch bei dir vorbei. The verb bin marks the end of the subordinate clause.

44.Three questions help determine the meaning

When you see wenn, ask: is this a condition? a repeated situation? a future moment?

ExampleMeaning
Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich.condition
Wenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Kaffee.repeated / typical situation
Ich rufe dich an, wenn ich angekommen bin.future moment
