Negation with nicht

Where nicht stands: whole-statement negation, before the verbal bracket, adjectives, places and times, nicht ... sondern, nicht müssen vs. nicht dürfen, and nicht vs. kein.

1.Basic idea

nicht is the standard German word for “not”. It negates a whole statement or a single part of it: a verb, an adjective, an adverb, a place or a time. The position of nicht depends on what is negated. When the whole statement is denied, nicht stands late in the clause. When one element is denied, nicht stands directly before that element.

Ich komme nicht.
Wir arbeiten heute nicht.
Er versteht das nicht.

2.Negating the whole statement

If the action or state as a whole is denied, nicht comes after the subject, the verb and everything that stays in the middle of the clause: a time expression and a definite object. In simple sentences this puts nicht at the very end.

Ich arbeite heute nicht.
Anna lernt heute nicht.
Ich kenne den Mann nicht.
Sie versteht die Frage nicht.
subject + verb + (time) + (object) + nicht

The object stays in front of nicht: Ich kaufe das Auto nicht. The sentence denies the buying, not the car.

3.The verbal bracket: nicht before the right-hand part

Some verb forms split the clause into two parts: the finite verb stands in position 2, and a second part stands at the end. This second part is the separable prefix or the infinitive after a modal verb. In such sentences nicht stands before the right-hand part.

Ichsteheheutenichtauf.
Ichkannheutenichtkommen.
Verb typeExample
separable verbIch stehe heute nicht auf.
separable verbEr ruft mich heute nicht an.
modal verb + infinitiveIch kann heute nicht kommen.
modal verb + infinitiveSie will heute nicht lernen.

4.nicht before an adjective or adverb

An adjective or adverb is negated by putting nicht directly in front of it.

nicht teuernicht heißnicht schwernicht gern
Das ist nicht teuer.
Der Kaffee ist nicht heiß.
Er spricht nicht schnell.
Sie fährt nicht gern mit dem Bus.

5.nicht before a place or time

A place or a time expression is negated when it is the part being denied, usually because another place or time is meant instead. nicht then stands directly before this phrase.

Ich wohne nicht in Berlin.
Wir arbeiten nicht im Büro.
Der Kurs beginnt nicht um acht.

The contrast is often stated with sondern (“but rather”):

nicht X, sondern Y
Ich komme nicht heute, sondern morgen.
Sie wohnt nicht in Bonn, sondern in Köln.
Das ist nicht teuer, sondern billig.

The position of nicht shows what is denied:

SentenceWhat is denied
Ich komme heute nicht.the coming itself
Ich komme nicht heute, sondern morgen.only the day
Ich arbeite nicht zu Hause, sondern im Büro.only the place

The same applies to objects. With nicht before the object, the object is contrasted with another one: Ich kaufe nicht das Auto, sondern das Fahrrad.

6.nicht and the second position

nicht does not change the basic main-clause rule. The finite verb stays in position 2, whatever stands in position 1. nicht does not occupy either position.

Heute arbeite ich nicht.
Am Montag komme ich nicht.

7.nicht müssen and nicht dürfen

With modal verbs, nicht can change the meaning in a way that differs from the English word-for-word version. nicht müssen means that something is not necessary. A prohibition is expressed with nicht dürfen.

PatternMeaningExample
nicht müssennot obliged to, not necessaryEr muss heute nicht arbeiten.
nicht dürfennot allowedHier darf man nicht rauchen.

8.nicht and kein

nicht and kein negate different things. nicht negates verbs, adjectives, adverbs and nouns that are already specific: with der, die, das, or a possessive such as mein. kein negates a noun that would otherwise have ein or no article at all. It means “no” or “not any”.
