Inversion: Starting with Time or Place

Starting a statement with time or place: the verb stays in position 2 and the subject follows it. Covers dann, separable and modal verbs, the difference from yes/no questions, and typical mistakes.

1.Starting with something other than the subject

A German statement does not have to begin with the subject. Time and place are very common openers, and any other important element can also take first position. The same facts can be put in three ways:

Ich arbeite heute zu Hause.
Heute arbeite ich zu Hause.
Zu Hause arbeite ich heute.

The finite verb stays in position 2 in every version. Only the element before it changes, and when that element is not the subject, the subject moves behind the verb. At A1 this change is usually called inversion.

VersionPosition 1Position 2Rest
subject firstIcharbeiteheute zu Hause.
time firstHeutearbeiteich zu Hause.
place firstZu Hausearbeiteich heute.

2.Why the subject follows the verb

In Ich lerne heute Deutsch. position 1 is Ich and position 2 is lerne. If heute is moved to the front, it occupies position 1, and the verb must remain second. The subject can no longer stay in front of the verb, so it follows it: Heute lerne ich Deutsch.

Wrong: *Heute ich lerne Deutsch. Here two separate elements, Heute and ich, stand before the verb, which pushes it to position 3. Inversion is therefore not an extra rule; it is the direct consequence of V2.

3.Starting with time

Time expressions are among the most natural openers in German.

HeuteMorgenAm MontagUm acht UhrNach der ArbeitDanachSpäter
Heute bleibe ich zu Hause.
Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin.
Am Montag habe ich Deutschkurs.
Um acht Uhr beginnt die Arbeit.
Nach der Arbeit gehe ich einkaufen.
Später treffe ich meine Freunde.

The pattern is time, verb, subject. The time block can be long and still counts as one element: Am frühen Morgen fährt der Bus nach Frankfurt. and Nach dem Deutschkurs treffe ich meine Freundin.

4.dann and the order of actions

dann links actions in sequence and is nearly always followed by the verb. The rule is the same as for any other opener.

Ich frühstücke. Dann fahre ich zur Arbeit.
Zuerst lerne ich. Dann sehe ich fern.

Wrong: *Dann ich fahre zur Arbeit. The verb belongs directly after dann.

5.Starting with place

A place can take first position in the same way.

Zu HauseIn BerlinIm BüroAuf dem TischVor dem Bahnhof
Zu Hause lerne ich Deutsch.
In Berlin wohnt meine Schwester.
Im Büro arbeitet mein Vater.
Auf dem Tisch liegt das Buch.
Vor dem Bahnhof wartet mein Freund.

The pattern is place, verb, subject. A place block may be a longer group: In meiner Stadt gibt es viele Cafés. and Im kleinen Café an der Ecke arbeitet Anna. Each of these is still one element in position 1.

6.Same facts, different starting point

Different openers change what the sentence is organised around.

OpenerExampleEmphasis
subjectIch gehe morgen ins Kino.who acts
timeMorgen gehe ich ins Kino.when
placeIns Kino gehe ich morgen.where to

All three sentences are grammatical. At A1 the stylistic effect should not be overrated: what changes is mainly the information focus. An opening block often sets the frame for the rest, for example Heute arbeite ich zu Hause. or In Berlin wohnt meine Schwester.

7.When inversion happens

Inversion occurs only when the time or place expression really stands in position 1. If it follows the verb, the subject stays where it is:

  • Ich arbeite heute zu Hause. — heute is after the verb, no change;
  • Heute arbeite ich zu Hause. — heute is in position 1, so ich follows the verb.

The impersonal es behaves like any other subject: Es regnet heute. becomes Heute regnet es.

8.Verb frames with inversion

Separable verbs and modal verbs keep their frame when the opener changes. The finite verb stays second; the second part stays at the end.

ConstructionPosition 1Position 2MiddleEnd
separable verbUm sieben Uhrsteheichauf
modal verbHeutemussicharbeiten

Um sieben Uhr stehe ich auf.

Heute muss ich arbeiten.

9.Inversion is not a question

A statement with inversion and a yes/no question both have the verb before the subject, but they are different structures.

TypeOrderExample
statement with inversionone element + verb + subjectHeute kommst du.
yes/no questionverb + subjectKommst du heute?

In the statement, position 1 is filled by Heute. In the question, position 1 is occupied by the verb itself. Subject after verb alone does not make a question.

10.Typical mistakes

  • Keeping the subject in front of the verb after a time opener. Wrong: *Heute ich arbeite zu Hause. Correct: Heute arbeite ich zu Hause.
  • The same error after a place opener. Wrong: *In Berlin meine Schwester wohnt. Correct: In Berlin wohnt meine Schwester.
  • Placing the verb first as in a question. For a statement: Heute kommst du. For a question: Kommst du heute?
  • Dropping the second part of a separable verb. Wrong: *Um sieben Uhr stehe ich. (meaning aufstehen) Correct: Um sieben Uhr stehe ich auf.
