1.Work and professions
At A1, conversations about work often turn on three questions:
The topic covers common profession names, workplaces, simple job activities, working hours and basic patterns. At A1 it is more useful to master a small set of common patterns than to memorize a very long list of professions.
2.Talking about your profession
A very common question is Was bist du von Beruf?
With sein + profession, the profession normally appears without an article in this basic use: Ich bin Lehrer., Sie ist Ärztin., Er ist Koch.
Not as the basic pattern: Ich bin ein Lehrer.
ein/eine can appear when the profession is described more specifically or emphasized, but for a simple statement of profession, no article is the key A1 pattern.
3.Common professions

der Lehrer / die Lehrerin | teaches |

4.Masculine and feminine profession forms
Many profession names have a masculine and a feminine form.
| Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|
Lehrer | Lehrerin |
Verkäufer | Verkäuferin |
Ingenieur | Ingenieurin |
Student | Studentin |
Very often the feminine form is made with -in. Some words also change internally: Arzt → Ärztin, Koch → Köchin.
It is best to learn the exact form together with the word.
5.Profession and grammatical gender
Profession names are nouns and have grammatical gender: der Lehrer, die Lehrerin.
But when you simply state what someone's profession is, there is normally no article after sein:
With a more detailed description, an article may appear:
6.arbeiten — the main general verb for work
arbeiten means “to work”.
Several useful pieces of information can follow arbeiten: als + profession, bei + company / organization, in + place / field.
7.arbeiten als — in what role?
Use als to name the professional role.
Basic model: arbeiten als + profession. Here als roughly answers: in what role?
8.arbeiten bei — for which company or organization?
Use bei to name an employer or organization.
bei takes dative: bei der Firma, bei einem Hotel, bei der Universität.
9.arbeiten in — place or field
Use in for a workplace or field.
With a fixed location, in often answers wo? and therefore uses dative.
10.Workplaces and common places

|---|---|
das Büro | Ich arbeite im Büro. |
das Krankenhaus | Sie arbeitet im Krankenhaus. |
die Schule | Er arbeitet in einer Schule. |

|---|---|
die Arbeitszeit | working time / hours |
Vollzeit | full-time |
Teilzeit | part-time |
die Pause | break |

The present tense can therefore describe both a general work situation and a routine.
23.Word order
Basic model: subject + finite verb + other information.
If time comes first, the verb remains in position 2:
24.Useful combinations
Especially useful patterns: sein + profession, arbeiten als + profession, arbeiten bei + employer, arbeiten in + place/field, arbeiten mit + person/thing, arbeiten von ... bis ...
25.Common mistakes

Mistake 2: Mixing up als and bei → not Ich arbeite bei Verkäufer., but Ich arbeite als Verkäufer.
Mistake 3: Mixing up company and profession → not Ich arbeite als Siemens., but Ich arbeite bei Siemens.
Mistake 4: Wrong verb form → if sie = one woman: Sie arbeitet in einem Krankenhaus. (not Sie arbeiten ...).
Mistake 5: Confusing Sie and sie: Sie arbeiten. can mean formal “you” or several people; sie arbeitet. means one woman.
26.Useful conversation building blocks
A simple conversation about work often needs only a few patterns:
These patterns form a small communication system: profession → workplace → activity → working time.
